I need a math operation that fits in between addition and subtraction..

For challenge: Given list of ints, e.g. 1 0 8 2 4 4, put + sign in between pairs that increase, and - in between pairs that decrease, and ? in between equal pairs. So 1-0+8-2+4?4 = 9?4
