@HelkaHomba Just for clarification, if we create a copy of the original file, do we have to also delete the original file?
My code is the same length either way, just wanted to be sure.

@DrGreenEggsandIronMan Yes - delete any temp files you create

Cool, ty
I think I can shave off 5 bytes
Nope, only three.
Important question: What is this ASCII face's name?
-_-

Looks like we have a brand new user who might win a golf with their first answer! codegolf.stackexchange.com/a/82657/20469

@DrGreenEggsandIronMan there doesn't seem to be a consensus.. some sources say sad/upset, others say annoyed, troubled, embarrassed or ashamed

No, I mean it's name. Like Billy, or George.

I don't think it has a name

That's sad. I think it needs one.

most smileys don't have a proper name
you can call it Helka :p

@aditsu Unicode 7? :/

How long can a chat room go silent before it goes inactive?

7? no

@DrGreenEggsandIronMan 15 days or something

or you mean version? I don't know

5:50 AM
1 hour shows a notice, 14 freezes rooms (worth retaining).
@aditsu Version.

@DrGreenEggsandIronMan I think it depends on how many people have talked in the past <time period> also.

what is that time period?

@zʏᴀʙiɴ101 seems to be unicode 3.2.0

@DrGreenEggsandIronMan The Roaring 20s

Coolio, thanks!

Yes, that's exactly what who I meant.

chat mini-challenge: given three numbers a,b,n. If n=1, compute a*b. If n=2, compute a^b, etc.
a,b,n are positive integers
For n=3, 4,5 would become 4^4^4^4^4
evaluate from right to left

Evaluation order doesn't matter. Right to left would give the same result.
Wait, what would n=4, 4,5 look like?

@Upgoat I reserve right to use it first if you havent

4·4·4·4·4 where a·b is a^a^...^b
what is (k=±√5I)∑(2x-1)^k-1 ?

The pinned messages are way too long. I see two (one if it's longer) actually starred entries on the starboard.

@mınxomaτ Those two mods aren't the pro-golfers

6:21 AM
Getting to the point is a skill useful outside of golfing, too ;-)

What counts as a "pro golfer"?
Martin or Dennis?

@DrGreenEggsandIronMan Page one and not me (oh and not Ale|Doo either to stay consistent with my last message)

By that definition, they are both pro-golfers.

@HelkaHomba Damn, we got rekt.

Is "doo" actually a word, not just a colloquialism for feces?

@AlexA. a bird. You should know

6:32 AM

I'm not Scottish

Serious question: What's the golfiest string compression method? Base encoding? Huffman? Something else?

Depends on the size of the string

@DrGreenEggsandIronMan It depends on the type of the string you want to compress

If it's small and ASCII, entropy encoding like Shoco is the way to go

For example, Pyth's method: example string bcade
take smallest and largest: a e
and then calculate difference: 1,2,0,3,4

6:35 AM
@DrGreenEggsandIronMan Kolmogorov complexity technically?

then compress in base (largest-smallest+1), which is base 5 ->
894
then base 256: \x03~
so it becomes ae\x03~

@AlexA. Hey, that's really good. Thanks for the link algorithm!

I didn't provide a link, but you're welcome :P

I googled it.
I didn't say anything about a link...

6:39 AM
@LeakyNun that's the hyperoperation, right? it's been posted as a real challenge

6
Q: Evaluate the nth hyperoperation

Soham ChowdhuryI do realise that this is a bit math-y, but - here goes. In mathematics, the hyperoperation sequence is an infinite sequence of arithmetic operations (called hyperoperations) that starts with the unary operation of successor, then continues with the binary operations of addition, multiplication...

oh, thanks!

@DrGreenEggsandIronMan I even made a Julia package for working with Shoco :D

> Ah e'en gart a julia package fur workin' wi' shoco :d.

Hey, that's awesome! You didn't happen to write in python while you were at it, did you?

@DrGreenEggsandIronMan use LZW with the printable characters plus \x09, \x10 as starting dictionary

6:41 AM
@DrGreenEggsandIronMan No but Mego may have because Seriously and Actually use it

@HelkaHomba You have provided irrefutable evidence that Alex is indeed Sco'ish.

@HelkaHomba wet

@AlexA. Oh, nice. I'll look into that.
I might also steal the code-page while I'm at it.

Can Python call compiled C? If so, just compile the original C library and call it from Python.
That's what I do in Julia; the package is basically just a wrapper for compiling the C code and using Julia's ccall. :P

I think it can, but that's more complicated than I was hoping to deal with.

6:44 AM
@DrGreenEggsandIronMan Alex Eh.

@DrGreenEggsandIronMan Based on a cursory read of Google results, it appears calling C from Python is a gigantic pain the ass.

Yeah, that's what I remember from last time I tried.

@LeakyNun Did you mean \x0A? :/

Although tbf I was a noob last time I looked into it.

@zʏᴀʙiɴ101 oops...

@HelkaHomba you could be making the next video instead of wasting time here with Alex and Dr Green Eggs

I love how they made sure the inside of the fish looks like the real thing, too.

6:48 AM
@isaacg After having considered a while, I suggest you use bijective base to get rid of the problem of initial zeroes.

@Optimizer Everytime somebody else actually writes my username out, I have to laugh out loud at how ridiculous of a name I picked.

Sorry Alex but that translator is too much fun

@HelkaHomba Cheil?

@DrGreenEggsandIronMan well

@DrGreenEggsandIronMan idk either

Is there a shoco online?

@DrGreenEggsandIronMan it needs to chelate that iron

@DrGreenEggsandIronMan I can only see the compression ratio, not the actual string...

@LeakyNun Oh, yeah you'd probably need to download/run that in C to C them.
Or julia:

@DrGreenEggsandIronMan I even made a Julia package for working with Shoco :D

@DrGreenEggsandIronMan any js fiddle?

XYZ sliders: nice, good stuff, W sliders: OMGWTFBBQKITTENZ!!!!!1!!!!11eleven
@Bálint you could add a camera distance+zoom slider (like the dolly zoom effect)
to adjust the perspective distortion
beyond that, maybe add faces (opaque or semi-transparent)

animation!
put dXW sliders

@Optimizer I prefer the static version over the animated one
But I can add a checkbox to make both

8:42 AM
I'm not sure your rotations are working correctly

Dammit. I could have won my own challenge if I thought to add a feature before posting it. :(

8:56 AM
@DrGreenEggsandIronMan what feature?

:set nostartofline
It makes it easier to select a block of characters.

@DrGreenEggsandIronMan you out-golfed me :o

\o/
Let's just see what dennis does. :P

why is it non-competing?

Because I added :set nostartofline
Without it, it's 10 bytes longer :(

8:59 AM
then add it to the byte-count and make it competing

I figured I'd rather have an awesome non-competing answer than a so-so competing answer.
And also, even if it were competing, winning your own challenge isn't as satisfying.

9:13 AM
@DrGreenEggsandIronMan Still, "non-competing" answers should be deleted until they are competing.

@mınxomaτ Non competing =/= invalid. meta.codegolf.stackexchange.com/questions/7987/…
I marked it as noncompeting because it uses features that are newer than the challenge.

@aditsu transparent faces: mcdorli.github.io

hmm, not what I had in mind
and there's a hole

@aditsu This is what a 4d cube looks like
Of course you didn't have this in your mind
You pretty much can't imagine it

9:28 AM
no, I mean I didn't want them to be fully transparent
and there shouldn't be a hole

@aditsu This way you see everthing
@aditsu What hole?
Do you mean this middle cube

I could see everything when you didn't have faces, I wanted to not see everything, so that I can figure out what faces are in the front
move the first 4 sliders to about 25%
you'll see a hole in the middle

@aditsu That's intended behaviour

@aditsu you understand that the axis of the hypercube gets split into two in W rotations.. right?

Oh no, sorry, I left out 4 faces
2 minutes

9:32 AM
@Optimizer no

it kinda does when seen in 3d (2d)
move XW to like 10% and then slide XZ

this is a 2d projection of a 3d projection of a hypercube
This is not a hypercube BTW

yes

The net failed me again

@DrGreenEggsandIronMan Is it "may" assume padding or is it "the input will definitely be padded"?

9:35 AM
Those messages should be in reversed ordder
It's like watching a 3d cube projected on a line

not really
due to our brain, perception of 3d projections on 2d planes (When done with perspective) is very much equivalent to watching the 3d projection in 3d in real life.
but a 2d projection on a line is not the same
extending to that.. a cube projection on line is not equivalent to hypercube on 2d plane.

mcdorli.github.io Now every face is there

@Bálint Cool thing=)

@DrGreenEggsandIronMan Also side note: I notice that you spell "emoji" with a double i, i.e. "emojii". Any particular reason?

@Sp3000 Maybe he thinks the i is long, as in: "emojī".

so recently everoyne has been talking about emoji, is there any difference to the emoticons we had before?

@flawr emoticon = emotion + icon, while emoji is Japanese for "drawing words", and I have no idea why they look so similar.

Coincidence probs

10:06 AM
yep

I've only heard the term emoji over the last one or two years.

e = draw, moji = word

tbh I don't know why people are using "emoji" as a word when "emoticon" suffices, that's an interesting thought

Ok it seems that they are used for the very same things, except that emoji is the japanese term that has now also spread in the western world.

I'm surprised emoji has spread so much but not so much kaomoji

10:12 AM
Probably because the first one is more similar to emoticon than the latter, which is also probably more difficult to pronounce.

poll: how do you pronounce "emoji"?
A. /ee-mou-jee/
B. /eh-mou-jee/
C. /ee-maw-jee/
D. /eh-maw-jee/
(Bonus: where do you place the stress? *E*moji vs e*MO*ji)

So... the coincidence led to a misconception which made it popular? o_O
(Re poll: depends who I'm talking to, which is also the answer to "how do you pronounce 'manga'")

then how?

ee-mow-jee in normal English conversation, eh-mo-jee if someone knows Japanese

and the stress?

10:22 AM
strawpoll oneboxing

mo for first, e for second

I pronounce it as /e'moʒi/

@Bálint that's an interesting pronunciation of j

I definitely don't pronounce it as the y in you

you sure it is not /ɛˈmɔdʒi/?

10:25 AM
(one day I'll learn IPA, one day...)

Instead of learning IPA you'd better drink IPA.

@LeakyNun Yes, like that, but I didn't want to copy paste every symbol I use
I meant /e'modʒi/ originally

@Bálint That's an interesting pronunciation of /e/ and /o/...

Again, I don't want to copy paste every symbol

alright alright

What can you say, they're useful in different situations
@Dennis Did someone break TIO?

11:02 AM
@DrGreenEggsandIronMan Retina (can't test it right now): \b(\d+) \1\b<CR>$1 (15 bytes!)

11:12 AM
CMC (inspired by this): given positive integer n, add up n terms of this series: 4(1/1 - 1/3 + 1/5 - 1/7 + 1/9 - 1/11 ...)

if anyone knows a language with built-in e, factorial, and floor, the approximating e challenge can be expressed as floor(n!*e)/n!

@xnor wow!!!

or maybe with n-1, the challenge is unclear

You could do Mathematica, I guess

Is using e cheating...?

11:18 AM
challenge didn't say, so i assume it's fair game
i guess you can argue that the built-in e is finite precision, so this stops working for large n

@xnor well, it works, because the precision is only as precise as the e

the usual solution will also converge to an imprecise e

@xnor Mathematica's built-in e is symbolic

@MartinEnder oh, nice
ugh, the formula messes up n=1, claiming a value of 2 instead of 1

@xnor N@⌊#!E⌋/#!& but yeah, n = 1...
you can omit the N@ if exact (rational) output is allowed

Could somebody help me to fix my Never mind, it'd be a spoiler.

@MartinEnder Try-it-online is dead for me

Indeed

11:59 AM
Ok, I added an option to change the perspective's strength
I think @aditsu or @Optimizer mentioned that

We finally have a decent signal to noise ratio!

What kindof SNR are you talking about?
