Is it possible to make horizontal rules in chat?
Side-note, Rick Astley's new song is really not that bad
Oh, well ok. My only answer on QPixel just got deleted. GG mods.
@Geobits Can someone undelete this answer? >:|
@Geobits I... don't even see your user account?
which one are you?
@zyabin101 Nah, no big deal. Just odd. I can unnderstand cleaning the crap if it's about to go live, but not just randomly while in staging.
@ArtOfCode It's definitely not Trolly McTrollface.
18:03
Huh, I wonder how you managed to have 31 rep without any posts undeleted. Odd.
I had +30 from my answer. I just assumed it doesn't do a recalc on deletion.
It should do, yeah.
Everyone who downvoted my answer to this: I hate you all.
Um, okay, this is weird.
I found the answer in the console. It says it's not deleted.
Huh. Weird.
18:05
No, it's actually not deleted.
Odd, I don't see that question on the frontpage at all. Is there a threshold score for showing them there?
shrug recalcing all rep anyway
@Geobits the question was deleted, I just undeleted it
what's a qpixel anyway?
Ah. So wait, does it not delete answers when the associated question is nuked?
Someone shifted my answer to this to a null score. ಠ_ಠ
18:07
@Geobits correct
null? you mean 0?
@zyabin101 Yes, that's what happens when you dare people to downvote it.
"Also, this is QPixel test, so chill. ;)" Zyabin confirmed as not understanding trolling
3
@ArtOfCode yes.
I have a suspection that it was @EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ.
@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ ಠ_ಠ I hate you.
It wasn't only him at the very least.
18:09
@Fatalize ಠ_ಠ
@zyabin101 what's the question ID?
@ArtOfCode 8.
@Fatalize I have a suspection that you downvoted this question, too.
@zyabin101 I saw that you need to give a mail to register, so I didn't
@ArtOfCode What are you going to do? :3
Counting downvotes on it
18:11
Hopefully downvote it further >_>
3 downvotes
@ArtOfCode ಠ_ಠ
@zyabin101 si, que?
You wanted me to tell you who it was? ...gonna go with nope :)
@zya If it wasn't perfectly clear by now, one of them is mine.
18:16
Who downvoted my answer to this question?
@Geobits ಠ_ಠ
pretty sure someone's just downvoting everything
Who could that be ...
16 mins ago, by Geobits
@ArtOfCode It's definitely not Trolly McTrollface.
"Trolly McTrollface has cast 79 votes

18:19
Hey, someone's gotta test the downvote side of things ;)
Geobits found something to pass his smoke-free nerves on
Hmm. Turns out my nerves are much better when they go unmentioned.
Time to find some more stuff to kill.
@Geobits I recommend people's hopes and dreams
That's the usual target, yea.
I might go wash the car instead. It's gotta get done at some point today anyway...
Oh geez, I completely forgot that Round 1C was today (in my timezone)
I don't know where I'll be at 4 pm
18:28
hey, many KoTHs are step-based
continuous KoTH?
aka, each player performs an action for 2000 turns
I'm building a generic UI for KoTHs, and I want to add a "step" button
I think Martin wanted to do a continuous one a long time ago (tetris-based), but never wrote the controller.
but I'm not sure how to design it
because I don't want to force games to be step based
@NathanMerrill You mean to walk through playback on the controller side? Just have a 'step' and 'run' button.
And disable the button for non-step-based ones?
18:31
right, but how do I design the "Game" class such that it doesn't restrict games that don't want to be step based?
@NathanMerrill have a parameter for spf, and if its -1 make it continuous
while, if the game is step based, things juts work
You may need to inherit Game instead, depending on how you have the run set up. I'm not sure how to do a single run method for both stepped and continuous while keeping it clean.
yeah, Game is an abstract class
and games will inherit from it
@NathanMerrill will this be lang-specific, or use stdout/sdtin?
18:33
Ah. I've got a fun problem. My game (which I've been programming sizes by pixels) is too big on some displays
@Maltysen the controller is in Java. It allows for submissions in any language
@AshwinGupta Don't program sizes by pixels then?
so it takes up more then one page. And I need to somehow be able to scale it down based on display.
@Maltysen really?
And how can I scale it down =/
@AshwinGupta you can set width/height of images
package game;

import java.util.ArrayList;
import java.util.List;
import java.util.Random;

public abstract class Game<T> {
    protected Random random;
    protected List<T> players;
    protected Directory<T> directory;
    public Game(){
        this.players = new ArrayList<>();
        this.random = new Random();
    }

    public void setPlayers(List<T> players){
        this.players = players;
    }

    public void setDirectory(Directory<T> directory){
        this.directory = directory;
18:34
You just need to know the display size.
all displays are ~16:9
@Maltysen yeah IK that part.
@Geobits how do I get that?
so use the js functions to get screen/height width
@Maltysen mine is not
that's the base class so far
18:35
@AshwinGupta Depends on the platform, framework, etc. Google is your friend.
ok ty
@Maltysen k
If there's one thing I've had hammered in by Android development, is that you never use absolute sizes. For anything. Ever :P
oh, unless the ~ means "within 15% of that"
@Geobits well now I know =/
@Geobits what about menu icons?
18:36
@NathanMerrill you have different images for each screen display
@aditsu yeah, what if the end user has one of thoes ridiculous 32:9 displays.
@NathanMerrill Even then you should provide multiple versions for display density.
or whatever the aspect raitio is for those long ones.
@AshwinGupta only use the height as the scaling factor
@wizzwizz4 ಠ_ಠ
18:37
then it will always fit
@Maltysen right, duh.
shuldve thought about that.
@Downgoat ...
@Geobits is that what you tell your gf? :)
@aditsu Sure. Things change sizes depending on the situation. I thought everyone knew that :P
@Geobits ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
18:46
anyone know how to make me changing spaces to tabs not to show up in git? I inherited a repo, and I don't want to completely override the blame, but don't want spaces
it might not be possible to hide it, but you can proudly take credit for fixing the indentation :)
it would be nice if blame could ignore whitespace changes (optionally)
19:21
I really need to learn how to accept things as I originally wrote them: mediocore. I should not try to fix anything, ever.
I literally have no idea.
What I just did.
But everything is totally freaking broken.
I'm reverting to my backup.
you could write some tests
no one has time for that
hehe :)
I know one guy who does
When you are compiling C and get a python error ಠ_ಠ

Now that this has become a source of consensus on aspects of challenges, could it do with being reworded to be a bit more serious? — trichoplax 52 secs ago
I was thinking of deleting points 4, 5 and 6. Any thoughts?
@trichoplax Point 4 could stay. There are some reasons (e.g., asking for help in an ongoing competition) that warrant immediate deletion by current meta consensus.
Someone should add that to the thread, I guess.
@Dennis Sounds like a job for ... someone
@Dennis Good point - I'll just take out 5 and 6 and try to tidy up the inconsistent use of question/challenge and solution/answer
Sounds good.
20:03
Mythbusters was cancelled :(
Once I used an unfamiliar C compiler
I was wondering why my code wasn't working
It turns out that
the compiler used 32-bit chars
What??
Was that ever standard compliant for C?
Would a question for round-robin scheduling for processes (given as start time and duration) be considered a duplicate of other round-robin questions for tournament matches etc
20:12
 Their implementation-defined values shall be equal or greater in magnitude (absolute value) to those shown, with the same sign.
-- number of bits for smallest object that is not a bit-field (byte)
  CHAR_BIT                                            8
-- minimum value for an object of type signed char
  SCHAR_MIN                                -127 // -(27 - 1)
-- maximum value for an object of type signed char
  SCHAR_MAX                                +127 // 27 - 1
-- maximum value for an object of type unsigned char
Does the duration add to what was required in previous challenges?
@trichoplax ^^ From the C99 standerd
> equal or greater in magnitude
Ha ha I can't tell from that whether it's permitted or not...
So CHAR_BIT can be 32
imo not really, some answers would only need to be modified to fit the input
20:15
I guess a duplicate then. Is there anything you can add to make it new?
In fact, 13-bit chars are also allowed
@LegionMammal978 Ew
How many votes (roughly) are usually required before raising feature requests like this one to increase post character limit?
29 votes so far, all in favour

@trichoplax 30 votes.
Hilarious ratio of 1:(-5).
20:28
@zyabin101 Thanks :)
quick poll, has anyone ever heard of the (english) word "Pendantic"?
It's Pedantic
No, I mean "Pendantic".
Not of a pendant.
"Being flamboyant or excessive in words"
it doesn't exist
How can you be sure?
20:30
No Google result from any reputable dictionary
Are you really really sure you don't mean pedantic?
@trichoplax I mean, how much votes the post has now.
I am over 100% sure.
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ I hate to be pedantic, but...
Wait. No I don't.
Me, my Dad, my Mom, and both my brothers as well as my english teacher are convinced its a word
20:31
The first result for pendantic is a Urban dictionary definition with 5 upvotes and 28 downvotes
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ You can coin just about anything as a word. It's not a currently established word, though.
@Geobits My dad's known the word for as long as he can remember.
It's just friggin weird
It's not an officially established word, but it is in relatively common use
Thank heavens >_<
I thought I was going mad
"relatively common use"
20:33
@Fatalize you're french, right?
there's literally no definition of it on any reputable website
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ yes
Well, not relatively common here anyway. I don't think I've ever heard it except as a mistake when meaning pedantic.
@Geobits where is "here"
?
maybe it's an east coast thing
Use is increasing, though small: Google N-Grams
20:34
Florida, Georgia, New York, Mississippi, Arkansas, or anybody I met in the military (from all over) >_>
where did you find that?
@ArtOfCode I don't think n-grams can filter out when it's used mistakenly though :/
@Geobits No, but one would assume it's not used mistakenly all the time
The sub-sub-region graph is more helpful.
20:35
@ArtOfCode One would assume the opposite if one assumes it's not really a word ;)
pedantic is already a rare word
and pendantic is literally never used compared to it
The city graph shows only New York, so...
@ArtOfCode How can it be used non-mistakingly when it's not attested by any reputable source?
@Fatalize not literally
20:37
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ there's an xkcd for that
figuratively if you prefer

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ is so pedantic
It was better before the edit.
@Fatalize comparatively is literally a better word :p
Oh well, it's not the end of the world :P I still have pedantic
20:41
n-gram graphs are officially confusing:
@zyabin101 Then thanks to whoever it was who voted straight after I posted the link...
@Geobits +1 for freehand circles
> Peter wants to generate some prime numbers for his cryptosystem. Help him!
Do I get paid?
In cryptocurrency?
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ In fake internet points, just like in the real world.
@Geobits Oh! I hope this means there's some SE currency exchange for rep => cash :P
20:43
@trichoplax You are welcome!
:3
I'm actually having a really hard time finding any instance in google books for pendantic that isn't a mistake :/
that's cause the word doesn't exist
What's the point of hiring proofreaders and editors?
@Fatalize That's my belief, too, but I'm trying to find a counterexample to satisfy my curiosity completely. No luck so far.
@Fatalize it does exist, it just isn't reputably confirmed.
Or in any book ever, apparently.
20:46
if it exists then what is it supposed to mean
@Fatalize The secondary definition of pedantic
if it means the same as pedantic it obviously means it's a typo
yeah
so it doesn't exist
bs
you claim it doesn't exist, I know multiple people who use pendantic.
does that make it right?
if so then "should of" is correct grammar
20:47
no, but that doesn't make it not exist.
You could make the argument either way. It depends on whether you think language is prescriptive or descriptive.
"People use it, so it's a word" vs "People are idiots", basically
me using "xjeazx" doesn't make it a word though
There are quite a few "acceptable" words and phrases in English that started as mistakes, though.
@Fatalize Sure it is a word.
@Geobits and seeing the numbers of results pendantic returns on Google, it's not one of them
20:50
@Geobits That applies to every language (even programming languages). And I'd call it "mutation" not "mistake".
@Fatalize It's another beautiful point in the space of unpronounceable 6 letter words
It's not mutation when people don't know that the correct word is Pedantic, it's a mistake
@mınxomaτ Some I'd argue are pure mistake, but yea, I have no doubts that other languages have them as well. I just wouldn't be able to point to examples of them except in English.
this is now one of my favorite websites: yourlogicalfallacyis.com
@Fatalize All I'm arguing is that it exists.
20:51
Which makes me wonder, is this a genuine conversation about pendatic? Or is this an in joke following yesterday's xkcd?
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ All I'm arguing is that it's not an English word
@trichoplax no, it's genuine.
how can we tell...?
It's quite a coincidence...
@trichoplax because I started it :P
20:52
after reading xkcd... ;)
nicely played, by the way
@zyabin101 I actually downvoted it.
@Fatalize Why argue? I don't think anybody disputes this fact
eyyy @CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ you fixed Jolf on Chrome
@quartata Yes, I did XD
I misread that as "have you fixed"
Ohhh now I know why I couldn't do the server connection thing I was trying to do
My IRCD uses TS6
21:02
Well...
they just don't want help or jobs :P
@ArtOfCode I thought of something better for IRC authentication
@quartata cool, what's that?
Basically we have a page on QPixel that you can only access when you're logged in
And it generates a session ID and shows it to you
Then in IRC you log in with /msg authserv ID
Well, I'll be damned, look who has a GitHub account: github.com/god (pun intended).
21:07
The ID would be stored somewhere in a hash in the Rails instance with the value being the user information
And the ID would be destroyed once it was used
That would work - you'd have to do the IRC side, again, but the Rails side is dead easy.
The benefit is that we won't have to run IRC over SSL
which I hear is a pain in the ass
Actually, I just thought of something... maybe we don't need svsnick after all
Perhaps I can just broadcast a fake nick message as a server
if that's the case we can just go back to regular old ircd-irc2 or keep using ircd-hybrid
@quartata Keep using hybrid!
I think it's safer.
?
We're not using SSL anyways
ircd-hybrid is configured now
and it does appear to be a little more sane when it comes to permissions
21:24
All right. I think I have to do TS6 for ircd-hybrid but not too big a deal hopefully
...that is if I could find a protocol description anywhere
Ah, here we go.
Say I'm talking about a "maths creature" of sorts referred to as "Theta Prime"; would you, as a reader, rather read "Theta Prime", or a literal theta followed by a literal prime symbol?
OK, now I have Registration timed out... huh
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ what is a prime symbol?
21:30
@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ basically '
@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ ′
In a book? Seeing it as symbols would drive me crazy. Spelled out please.
Oh, i thought you meant no divisor prime. :p
.... symbol
@Geobits -_-
@Geobits blog post :P
I guess it depends on audience, but I would generally stand by my previous statement.
There's a reason elves' names aren't in elvish script in LoTR, for example.
21:32
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ but it is GOLFIER
Trying to reconnect 5 minutes later -> Trying to reconnect too fast.
Thanks TS6
@Geobits okay, thanks
6 minutes obviously, what else would ts 6 use?
:p
.... maybe
@quartata sounds like you're having fun with that
21:37
not really
but yeah
I wish the protocol description would tell me which command comes first
I think it's SID -> CAPAB -> SERVER
but who knows anymore
What are you trying to get?
Trying to establish a psuedo-server
and do you want me to get that page working? For that matter what does it need to do?
21:39
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ You are allowed to be be annoying becuase you like cats. But still don't do it.
@ArtOfCode Lemme first get this setup and I'll see about that
sure :)
@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ XD okay
Ohh wait a second
@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ drinkbai
oops wrong port
...yea, that doesn't help
IRC's on 6667
I was using the client port by accident not the server port
21:54
@ArtOfCode can i has star
4
@Downgoat there you go
I know :P
Can Trolly haz star?
