@flawr Moonlight is enough for me to see well enough to balance. I'm not sure if starlight (excluding the sun) is enough.
@El'endiaStarman In an area with dark skies, starlight is surprisingly bright.
@El'endiaStarman Do you notice any inferiority (or more generally difference) when it comes to your sense of balance when comparing with other people (assuming there is enough light)?
@ArtOfCode Yeah. I'm just not sure if I've ever had the opportunity to try that. I do remember one night in the mountains of North Carolina where I almost couldn't see anything, and I was walking up a fairly steep gravel road, so I was staggering back and forth like I was drunk. So either that was starlight or there were clouds, and I don't remember which.
@El'endiaStarman Must've been cloudy. I spent a night in a tent in a Dark Sky Park in Scotland, and there was loads of light.
@El'endiaStarman ... or you were actually that drunk =P
14:04
@quartata Everyone on the #QPixel irc channel (well, someone :P) is waiting for a proper nickserv. Is one in the works?
@flawr Hard to say. I play with my balance a lot more than others, but their balance is probably better. For instance, at college, I would often walk along curbs just for fun. Also, largely due to the ten years altogether of martial arts I've done, I'll move in ways that exercise my balance, which I don't see other people do. Stuff like picking up my leg and scratching it while chatting with someone.
I'm looking at doing chanserv right now, but nickserv... shrug
idk how 2 nicksrv
@ArtOfCode Yeah, I guess. Likely also because I had just left a well-lit house.
That... doesn't help.
@El'endiaStarman Cool, I was just wondering because I also do like balance related activities=)
Anyway, thank you for patiently answering our questions=)
14:10
@Quill Heh, looks like someone wanted to make a StackExchange for a comfy community. :P
@Phrancis Indeed, this is hard. Progress has been made in recent years though, but noise reduction (on my processors anyway) is largely stuff like quieting the low frequencies and raising the high frequencies. I tried it during work in a restaurant once and it was great...until someone rolled a metal rack across the tiled floor. Then I couldn't hear anything else. :P
Work around: make your own Q&A site. :P
@flawr No problem. I like answering such questions. :D
Maybe I should start a FAQ...
@El'endiaStarman Maybe a full fledged Q&A site! :D
@Phrancis Yup, the bane of my existence. :P Seriously though, I generally avoid noisy places.
@zyabin101 Ha, no. I'd provide enough material for about a week.
14:12
:(
@zyabin101 I know a good bit of software for doing that, actually.
@flawr I struggle to think of what it would be like without any of my organs. But then again, every time I encounter a situation like this (someone who functions different/better/worse/whatever than I do), I'm always amazed at the contrast. I get the same sense of amazement when I'm around a bodybuilder as I do when I'm around someone who's blind -- it makes me stop and take better stock of where I am and what I take for granted almost constantly.
"sense of amazement when I'm around a bodybuilder" ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
@Geobits Apparently, the latest generation(s?) of processors can do that! Not mine, though. (The reason for the "(s?)" in the previous sentence is that there are three companies that make cochlear implants, and I know that to be true of one of them.)
@El'endiaStarman This is all very cool info. Thanks for indulging our curiosities about it :)
14:16
On a related topic, I love watching Tommy Edison -- one of my absolute favorite YouTube personalities.
@El'endiaStarman There has to be a SE site for disabled/blind/deaf people?
@Phrancis Part of the difficulty is that maybe you want people to hear noise sometimes. The brains of normally-hearing people easily tune out noise when unwanted.
@TimmyD I've been told by a doctor that I have basically no depth perception. It's very hard for me to believe, because I think I see depth just fine, but I still wonder how the hell others see and how different it is.
@Geobits 3D vision activate
14:17
most doctor-who-like, but I have other ones I like better.
@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ That'd probably be like Parenting.SE - full of opinion-based stuff. And with a far smaller audience, that just isn't gonna happen.
@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ I heard.
@Zizouz212, ah, you let calvin get to your avatar?
@zyabin101 Looks like the chanserv stuff also does nickserv, so that might be up soon.
(#O.O )
14:18
@Geobits I hardly ever get to talk about this with others! I'm happy to do so here! :P
Aaaaa rainbow Wobbufet!
@El'endiaStarman Oh, that's a good point... passing on noise and letting the brain deal with it makes some sense, since that's how people generally do it.
Yeah. I don't know how well my brain does that though.
Well, to be fair, nobody really does know that.
Like my depth perception. It was a shock to me to find this out at 19.
@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ Yep. I did
14:19
looks noice
@Geobits You didn't have any trouble with your driving exam?
@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ out of barrel I'm on the other side. I'm afraid.
Actually, I think I'm going to hand him a whole bunch of pictures that I've taken just to see how they look
@TimmyD No, and I see very well in general. I can usually read road signs and stuff before others in the car, that kind of thing.

Q: Drawing the Number ASCIIuare

ericw31415You have to write a function/program that will draw an ASCII art of a square made with numbers. Challenge This program will take one input n as a non-negative integer and draw a hollow square using this number. The inside must be filled with spaces. The borders also must have the same width. E...

14:21
@Geobits Well, that's just a matter of focus, not depth perception, though, right?
Right. But like I said, to me everything seems normal. I see cars coming toward me, I get out of the way or slow down, just like any sane person would. I assume my brain just uses other cues (relative size, etc) more than average instead of relying on the usual method.
I honestly thought it was a fluke until the second doctor said the same thing a couple years later ;)
That's fascinating.
:D
I can totally relate,because when I was 16 I learned that I have malfunctioning eye zoom. I still wonder what it is like for everyone else to have zoom in their eyes.
Huh. I didn't even know that was a thing. What is 'eye zoom'?
@Geobits When a person has two cochlear implants, that's known as having bilateral cochlear implants, which is now basically standard. I was first implanted with only one cochlear implant though. Anyway, cochlear implants don't communicate between each other, but they do have directional microphones, and especially, there are these things called T-mics which use your physical ear flesh, and they're awesome.
@Phrancis See above ^
Oh, so they use your ears to direct/focus the waves into the mic? That's awesome.
@Phrancis Well, the more distant source will be quieter, and the user's brain will probably just deal with it. I probably wouldn't be able to distinguish the two sources, but I'd see stuff and figure it out that way.
That is some impressive zoom.
@flawr Well, I mean, I know what zoom is. I just am not aware that people can really do that with their eyes.
@Geobits Well I wasn't aware either.
XD Would it be great if this was a real thing?
14:27
I am already looking forward to offering my first ever bounty for a code-golf challenge!
Would you also offer snickers? Some people do not like bounty.
3
FRUITW'd /o\
@TimmyD Every time I use my 30x zoom lens all the way out, it feels very impressive. I can only imagine what this one is.
That's no snickers.
@Geobits Yes, it's bounty.
But who doesn't like bounty? It's coconut and chocolate, nothing to dislike.
14:31
@flawr Is that you, Hubble?
Damn. I can easily get full-frame moon pics, but not planes.
That's insane.
@Geobits Nah, just my usual lens.
That guy seriously needs a tripod :P
Imagine the asymmetry in size between his left arm and his right.
His right is so small you can't see it here.
Good lord, why does this have 65 upvotes? I see random +10s from it in my notifications every now and then, but I had no idea it was that high. It's not even that good an answer :/
14:36
@Geobits 66?
:/
That was not the intent.
lol... two more up votes and a gold badge for you :)
@HelkaHomba Epic!
@Geobits even I like bounties
@Geobits For what it's worth, if I had to google that question, I'd probably upvote your answer for helping me.
And the question-asker for asking my question.
14:39
Fair enough, and I guess it has been there for five years now.
@Geobits nice answer +1
So 13/year doesn't seem so bad.
cat
cat
@Downgoat :o
@flawr wat
ooh, zoom range
@Geobits I should offer a bounty on it :P
Keep your precious SO rep. It looks like you need it more than I do :P
14:46
:P I don't exactly go on SO that often
What if I put a bounty?
Or eh, pretty soon you'll get a gold badge :)
is offering a bounty a gold badge?
Well it's not like I can stop you. I'd strongly discourage it, but it's your rep. Bounty away if you want to waste it ;)
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ Nope, but he'll get a populist badge
2x score over an accepted answer
I'd feel better about the populist badge if I was still active on SO, but I haven't been for quite some time.
Either way, yay shiny gold badge.
14:50
@Zizouz212 oic
@flawr It's a possibility
but actually no... snickers is bad if you have nut allergies
Chocolate is bad for you if you are human
@Zizouz212 well.. not quite in the same way :)
Oxygen is bad for you if you are (almost) anything.
@flawr ... that isn't snickers.
14:51
what if you are not?
Life is bad for you if you're alive.
@Geobits including a human
Avocad is good no matter what you are.
Space is bad for you if you're a flying rock
22 mins ago, by Geobits
That's no snickers.
I think maybe people here have misunderstood what an allergy is :)
14:52
ninja'd so hard
@Geobits dangit
> Spaaaaaace is bad for you if you're a flying rock
ftfy
ftfy?
fixed that for you
Aah. Cool
Also can mean "[redacted] that [redacted] you", but normally not.
not in this case
14:53
in any case... can someone else please answer my challenge :)
@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ Well, I guess I know my next phrase to try to sneak into a conversation in context.
if anyone likes one of the main programming languages it shouldn't be too hard.. I can't promise it is easy in whitespace :)
I know C/Java/Python/Ruby are regarded as very obscure on PPCG :)
Python is life. How dare you.
^
@Geobits ... you pride yourself on being obnoxious, don't you.
@Zizouz212 then please have a go at my challenge :)
before I am forced to offer booooounty
14:57
Wat challenge?
7
Q: Read n random lines from a potentially huge file

LembikThis challenge is about reading random lines from a potentially huge file without reading the whole file into memory. Input An integer n and the name of a text file. Output n lines of the text file chosen uniformly at random without replacement. You can assume that n is in the range 1 to ...

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ More like I usually associate with interesting people who wouldn't find it obnoxious.
I'll just wait. I'd like to have a juicy bounty for a ppcg answer :)
14:57
@Zizouz212 give good answer first
@Zizouz212 you can answer now and get the bounty later
Well... Let's take a look :)
hey, is there a site where I can give it the coordinates of some points and it will draw the polygon for me? or a program that can do it in a simple way?
brb posting challenge
:P
@aditsu On a map? You could look at google maps engine
14:58
@aditsu that's quite easy in any programming languages isn't it?
If they didn't shut that down
@aditsu I've used a site that hooked into the google maps api for that, but can't think of the name of it. Lemme look.
that was a random suggestion
> draw the polygon for me?
> Google maps api
@Zizouz212 no, on an empty canvas, ideally resizing/cropping it
14:59
@aditsu do you want a map?
oh, nope.
No clue. Define coordinates then
@Lembik yes, it's fairly easy, but I don't feel like writing the code now
@Zizouz212 pairs of floating-point numbers
You know... I should restart developing my paint program...
It did exactly that.
@aditsu ok
turtle?
does anybody speak gnuplot?
15:02
matplotlib?
@aditsu only basic
@aditsu do you use matplotlib?
never heard of it
Congratulations everyone. You successfully trolled me into a gold badge on SO.
Yaay! :D Congratulations!!!
@aditsu oh! It's a python thing
15:04
Even more eww
Wait what?
What's a python thing?
matplotlib is
Oh god
This is very bad
This is very very very bad
How could this possibly happen!
it is easy to plot polygons in it
I have no clue. Never used it.
matplotlib is fairly easy for simple stuff.
15:05
@Lembik any idea how to draw polygons with gnuplot?
yes.. like what @aditsu asked about
wait...is the search bar different?
@NathanMerrill Yeah, I noticed that earlier on
I thought PPCG got its new style
15:06
Gnuplot != Matplotlib guys.
@NathanMerrill no. Puzzling did.
and the userscript.
@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ I'm aware :)
@Lembik Do you consider the .NET random generator to be sufficiently random?
What about python random?
oooh, language design. On my random() function, have an xkcd=false option
if its true, then return 4
It should default to 4 without the option though.
15:07
that way the builtin random function can troll PPCG as well
@TimmyD probably :) I mean I am not that fussy. If it says it is random, that will do
@TimmyD do you suspect it isn't?
@Zizouz212 that's fine too
Okey dokey :)
I just don't want people do use randomness that the docs tells them is not random :)
if you see what I mean
really it was only rand%n that I could think of that wouldn't work
Well, technically the java docs say things like
> All bound possible int values are produced with (approximately) equal probability.
So asking whether "approximately" random is good enough makes sense to me.
15:11
better idea. xkcd=true would return 4 99% of the time
that's fine with me
the other 1% of the time, it'll return a random value
it was not meant to be a hardcore randomness test ;)
that way, all possible values are represented
so, nobody can help me -_-
cat
cat
15:12
@Zizouz212 your profile picture is very pleasing :)
@aditsu with wat?
drawing a polygon from coordinates, with gnuplot or whatever tool/site
@aditsu I was totally down to help with I thought it was maps. I don't plot enough to recommend anything for this, though.
@aditsu working on a program right now.
using turtle.
I did do a search of ppcg to see if we'd had that challenge yet though :P
Hmm. There's a lot more bots on Slither.io recently.
15:15
I think I figured it out (from SO)
plot 'data' using 1:2 with lines
where data is a file with the coordinates
@VTCAKAVSMoACE are they any good?
actually, just "plot 'data' with lines" seems to work
gnuplot's documentation is the worst
@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ so you don't need to do that
15:19
but thanks for offering
@TimmyD what language are you using out of interest?
Powershell.
For sure.
@Zizouz212 python has a built function just for sampling without replacement so it's super easy
@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ I would be impressed!
there are not enough bash answers on ppcg though
yeah
Powershell seems to be his favorite language. :P
15:28
I feel we should be able to reward language choice somehow
have a list of languages we would like more answers in voted on and then you get more points if you answer in one of those
this changes over time as people vote
ohai @VTCAKAVSMoACE wait wtf are you doing
@NathanMerrill Surprisingly good - they killed me more than once
come/leave/come/leave 4 times?
@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ wut?
you appeared, then left, then appeared and left 3 more times???
15:29
Hmm?
@VTCAKAVSMoACE the obviously have amazing reflexes, but do they strategize at all (like trying to trap you)?
@NathanMerrill Yeah - they sprint in front of you, go after blobs, know when to race alongside, etc.
How can I find the most starred msg in TNB?
that is easy
Nov 12 '15 at 22:26, by Doorknob
okay seriously stop abusing stars
15:34
So how though?
@epicTCK Search for a space, sort by star count?
can't search by space
79. Wowza!
@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ yeah
15:35
somebody go star one more time
@Lembik PowerShell, of course ;-)
Just did, I think..
@TimmyD I am definitely looking forward to it!!
how on earth would you do the random sampling?
or the jumping to a location in the file
or really any of it :)
@epicTCK Still at 79. You can't just click the star in the transcript. You have to click the drop-down arrow to the message's left, then select star as interesting.
@Dennis yeah I did, didn't work...
15:38
nvm at 80 now
transcript doesn't refesh
brb updating memes of pppcg
@TimmyD shall I just wait for your awesome answer ? :)
So how do we get it back on the starboard?
15:39
you can't
unless somebody pins it
and it doesn't really need to be pinned.
Random sampling is just using the Get-Random command. It's working through the FileStream.Seek() method that's a little trickier.
@TimmyD :) I can't wait
> Need inspiration? How about potential-meme.
Thanks GitHub, but I'm not into that.
@epicTCK Trivia: It also happens to be the most starred chat message, ever (AFAIK).
@Doorknob Are you working on Babble?
15:49
@Doorknob .... you appear whenever somebody mentions something you did or like, by majik......

Okai, time to talk about an idea for scarredbyletterrain.stackexchange.com.
I oppose that idea.

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ for your blog: discourse.org

i didn't read carefully enough to see if you can use it yourself
did you star that to remind yourself?
