If Earth had to be represented by one color, should it be blue or green?
why gray?
no it isn't
@Downgoat How about teal? Seems like a good compromise.
turns out it is this:
tge average color of earth
@Downgoat Some of us think it is...
00:18
@trichoplax then why is your profile peicture not gray
@Downgoat You didn't see my previous avatar :P
nope
I wonder if I should change my avatar.
@DrGreenEggsandHamDJ I do not like green eggs and ham
You do not like them Sam I Am?
00:19
@trichoplax is it this:
yes - looks grey in small...
Or if you squint your eyes.
Indeed
00:20
what should be displayed when a planet is gobbled up by the sun?
Is "Your planet died :(" good?
@Downgoat Out of interest, how did you find my previous avatar??
I looked up your name when said by new sandboxed posts
Ingenious
"Your planet has become part of a far greater celestial body"
00:22
wow thats a lot of profile pic changes
and then a frown face :P
@poi830 The black and white fine lines one was an experiment with the glitch in the avatar display in chat. Then I changed it to a ray traced scene for the launch of Computer Graphics SE. Then I reverted to my turtle from my first ever PPCG answer. Then the turtle went inverse coloured for Halloween.
Ooh, I have an idea for a new avatar. Dunno how it will look though.
ROASTE
D
@AlexA. ??
00:33
@Downgoat you just got roasted son
I did?
@Downgoat qwortoto originally had his message on two lines with the period along on the second.
qwortoto == quartata?
qw/ortoto/
wat.
ortotoortoto?
00:35
inb4 "ew gross perl"
does anyone know what this means:
d = cursorPosition - pointPosition
a = constant * d / length(d)^3
I don't think anyone could possibly know without context
gravity is the context
I finished writing Phondue docs for everything except diacritics... there are a lot of diacritics
Phondue docs?
00:45
I love fondue
if that a language?
I misread that as diuretics and was very confused. Now I'm just slightly confused.
So today I learned about Arqade's isuniwrong.com. I wonder if isalexwrong.com is available.
(psst someone with money go buy that domain)
My internet goes down and I miss so much, but when I had connection, nothing much happens. Go figure.
@trichoplax That's a good way to put it.
00:56
:)
@Downgoat Looks like this could be a force calculation on mouse/point interaction.
yeah, but what I do not know what constant and length do
@Downgoat Me neither. That may or may not be because you didn't post any additional code. :P
Gravity is a force that is calculated by:

F_G = gamma * mass1 * mass2 / distance^2
Where gamma is the gravity constant and mass1 and mass2 are the objects' masses. You get the resulting acceleration with:

F_G = a * mass1
a = F_G / mass1
  = gamma * mass2 / distance^2
And you'll see that the acceleration is independent of the moving object's mass. What remains is gamma * mass2 which you can set to an arbitrary constant. Whichever meets your needs best.

Now we have the length of the acceleration vector. The direction is of course normalize(cursorPosition - pointPosition). So the overall ac
00:59
constant is some constant you pick for tweaking purposes, and length() is basically distance().
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ gamma is: 6.67408 × 10^-11 m^3 kg^-1 s^-2 in this context, not -3
@El'endiaStarman oh ok
-53?
I'm not sure why it's cubed though. Should just be squared, I think.
Incidentally, you can save an operation by calculating the magnitude of the distance vector and not square-rooting it if you know it'll be squared later.
yeah, I was smart enough to do that
01:01
Good, good. :D
s/save an operation/golf it/
Unlike normal golfing though, this makes it faster. :P
who said golfng is slow???
golfing is probably faster for the copmiler
if it's always increasing velocity, will the object never slow down?
01:04
The line import java.util.Scanner; is throwing two errors in my program. The program literally contains a class and main method declaration. wtf
@Downgoat a should be positive or negative depending on the sign of d.
JAVA IS THROWING AN ERROR ON A COMMENT. SCREW THIS I'M SWITCHING TO PYTHON.
4
@ANerd-I why are you switching to an even worse language?
@Downgoat ಠ_ಠ
01:07
@Downgoat Because I don't know any parts of any other usable languages
learn the ways of babel
And here I was thinking you could put whatever you want in comments and get away with it
Anyone have ideas or should I go to S/O? I'm like "almost certain" percent sure that this program contains no errors and that Eclipse is doing A Thing.
it'll probably be closed as typographical error
@ANerd-I [looks at users-in-room list].....I'd say SO. :P
@Downgoat There's no typographical error though
01:11
there might be ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@ANerd-I Who's S and O?
what does the error say? Java and JavaScript are the same language so I might be able to help you
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ Stack Overflow
@Downgoat For the comment: The type java.lang.Object cannot be resolved. It is indirectly referenced from required .class files.
java standard libs must not be loaded then
01:13
I'm sad :(
@ANerd-I Stack/Overflow?
@Xanderhall D: what happend?
I wanna post and help someone improve an answer but I'm too much of a scrub
So sad
I'll just have to remember it for when I actually have enough rep
@Downgoat It says the JRE System Library is "unbound"
then bind it
What does that mean, and how?
01:16
go to Project > Properties > Java Build Path
the select "Libarires"
now select the problematic JRE entry
(assume future oks are implied)
01:19
click edit
choose an alternate JRE
then click finish
Doesn't that put me on Java 6 as opposed to 7?
@Xanderhall If they use chat you can ping them in here. Otherwise you'll have to wait for the rep...
@ANerd-I just see if it works
@trichoplax It's not that big of a deal, I can wait
It does, but still
01:20
something might of changed the default jdk name
@Xanderhall The urge to be helpful is strong in many of us in here :)
@trichoplax I just want to make code better D:
You can also mention the answer in here and someone may be able to suggest the improvement for you.
@ANerd-I Try restarting Eclipse. There's no error there
Sometimes it takes a little while to refresh errors
@quartata 1.7 is still unbound
01:23
wuht
infinity is unbound
@ANerd-I "this is a comment";
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ not in python
%this is a comment
01:36
@Downgoat Remove the semicolon?
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ no, in Python it's a string not a comment
and I'm pretty sure it's evaluated instead of stripped out at compile time
^ No weird errors, now, btw.
@Downgoat It's a "comment", like while ( 0 ) { comment }
01:37
@ANerd-I This one doesn't say Trevor B.
@AlexA. ಠ_ಠ
@ANerd-I \o/
@ANerd-I Just an observation
@ANerd-I ʜᴏᴡ ᴅɪᴅ ʏᴏᴜ ғɪx ɪᴛ?
@Downgoat By switching to 1.6 :P
01:38
oh shit, I just killed my mouse ;_;
@Downgoat By decapitation?
@El'endiaStarman no, a computer mouse
I was gonna say "starvation", but that wouldn't fit with "just killed".
it's a wireless one so as I was moving my mouse to the right it just slid of the table and I'm just like "OH SHIT" as it fell ;_;
01:41
Lol. My mouse is wireless too, but that wouldn't be possible for me. :P
@El'endiaStarman He slowly and deliberately withheld food from his mouse.
@El'endiaStarman do you sit at the middle of your desk?
(My "table" is a counter, there's a wall to the right, and it's three feet away. :P)
I don't know where my mouse is -_- and I haven't for... a while
01:42
I do sit fairly close to the middle though, so there's that too.
@Doorknob your cat probably ate it
(if you have a cat)
@Doorknob Not that you'd need it, of course.
@Downgoat I have a dog
@Doorknob ermahgerd what's its name
I have a cat, but all it does is tell me what I've told it.
01:42
Dogs are good.
@Doorknob dogs are like JavaScript, they are wonderful
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ That took me a second until you did the code formatting
@quartata Pepper
@Downgoat ಠ_ಠ
01:43
2 hours ago, by Alex A.
The Internet is a strange place full of jokes that go unnoticed due to the context lost in text.
Dammit, I need 21168 random bytes and the max is 16384 on random.org
@DrGreenEggsandHamDJ you don't like dogs?!? D:
make two requests
@Doorknob ermahgerd post pic of doge pls
01:44
@quartata head -c21168 </dev/urandom
@quartata ... Get 10584 bytes twice?
@quartata dog =/= doge
@ANerd-I but that's double the effort
@Downgoat I do like dogs. I do not like javascript.
2
ಠ_ಠ
@quartata that would require me to take my phone out of my pocket which is a lot of work
@DrGreenEggsandHamDJ :/
@Doorknob oh good point
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ I think that was deliberate
@DrGreenEggsandHamDJ that's understandable...
01:45
@AlexA. I gave him a picture :P
Cats are like javascript.
And honestly, I just stopped caring about languages. I love JavaScript. I can love PHP. I don't think Java is bad. Each language has a purpose, and each one is just fine.
@DrGreenEggsandHamDJ no no no no, not at all
wat
now I'm confused
Even JavaScript has a purpose. For me, it's to serve as prime bashing material for 19B :D
I just typed man xkcd instead of man xxd.
01:47
19B == 1111111111111111111 or 11111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111‌111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111?
@Downgoat No. 19B == 10011
Cats are like programming languages. I have no idea what they are capable of or how to interact with them except for the very basics.
@DrGreenEggsandHamDJ how??
@Downgoat Binary... ?
1 * 16 +
0 * 8 +
0 * 4 +
1 * 2 +
1 * 1
16 + 2 + 1 == 19.
01:48
@ANerd-I cats are like python... I'll leave it at that
@DrGreenEggsandHamDJ but what about the B?
19 =/= 19B
@Downgoat cats are the best
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ you like python??? D:
I can use it.
Python is like a python.
ok, that doesn't work out
01:50
Almost got my new avatar ready.

And s/kitty/puppy/.
This applies to me always
01:52
My dog isn't cute enough to get on the starboard. =(
I don't believe that for one second
@DrGreenEggsandHamDJ all dogs are cute enoguh to get on the starboard
I actually don't have a dog or a cat.
I have a lizard though. Does that count?
01:52
Depends
What kind of lizard?
@AlexA. leopard gecko
Whoops, pinged the wrong person.
:29106904 oh god

@Downgoat lol, rip formatting

Does anyone know why ThomasKwa's account was deleted?
@cat O_o really???

I think he just renamed himself.
he's lirtosiast now

Yeah, he's still around

Can mods see peoples' old names? Can they search historical usernames?
Old usernames show up in the chat transcript
01:55
@cat Yes we can see old names but no we can't search
is there a closed form primalty check?

@Downgoat ?
@Downgoat wilson's theorem?
iff n is prime
oh, yeah
Wilson's Theorem is slllllooooooooowwwwww
But very golfy.
01:57
@quartata Yeah. :P
but Cheddar doesn't have looops
@quartata And extremely impractical
Does it have factorial?
@AlexA. Yeah, but it's great for code golf :P
cat
cat
Explicit looping is for those who golf in Cobol. Use a recursive function instead :D
01:58
@cat Hey, Racket's (for rocks

Does Cheddar have some sort of procedure construct?
I use it all the time.
@cat cheddar only has a tokenizer and scopes at the moment
@cat Yeah it does but it doesn't have tail call optimization
@cat Yes, it's defined using CHEEZ PLZ
cat
cat
01:58
@quartata It does, though that's still not quite like for in C, Java, Python
@cat True, true.
I'm too lazy to actually take a picture of my dog, but he looks like this:
@AlexA. I don't remember releasing the docs yet...

AW
01:59
that's adorable
@DrGreenEggsandHamDJ SO BEAUTIFUL OMG
@DrGreenEggsandHamDJ awww
I can't believe you'd think that's not cute enough to get on the starboard
Is bro or gal?
