I don't think my dog is cute enough to get on the starboard:

@AlexA. you never replied to my comment on my meta post

@NathanMerrill I didn't? Which comment?

2:01 AM
@Doorknob wow reverse image serach is good...

One on the right killed the squirrel.

@Downgoat it's not hard when it's literally on the first page of results for "cute puppy"

@El'endiaStarman one on the right must be cat :P

cat
@Downgoat :P

@Doorknob google images doesn't have pages...

2:02 AM
I personally disagree, but here are 5 more from the first page. — Nathan Merrill 7 hours ago

@Downgoat Haha, just a hunting breed.

This is actually my sister's dog:

@El'endiaStarman both adorable although I'm kinda sad about the squirrel

cat
I'd post a pic of my doggo/kitty, but he's not here right now

basically, I'm looking for an answer as to whether the "involves math, but isn't about math" should have the math tag

2:03 AM
The starboard has gone nuts

@quartata Took 'em at least a year to get one, I think. :P

My dog has been chasing squirrels his entire life and still hasn't caught one

int(string, 16) will take a hex string and parse it into a number in Python right?

@quartata yeah

@cat This is not the right time for a cat to be in TNB.

@DrGreenEggsandHamDJ D: I like dogs, though

I actually have no idea how she caught it. Probably because it jumped on top of my car and got stranded there or something, so they could wait and nab it when it tried to go somewhere.

Why does SE keep saying "there are other rooms"?? WTF? Thou shalt have no rooms before TNB!?

Reason I'm betting that's probably why? There's muddy footprints on the hood of my car.

cat
2:06 AM
@El'endiaStarman xD

@cat No reason you can't have other rooms after TNB...

@El'endiaStarman you don't walk on top of your car?.... Guess it's just a goat thing....

@NathanMerrill The problem is that "involves math but isn't about math" is admittedly difficult to define because math itself is pretty general. So... hm.

cat
@El'endiaStarman Aha, but can you have bytes after the ninteenth one? Java says, yes!

How do you print without a trailing newline again? :P

2:07 AM
Why would you trust Java?
@quartata end=''

cat
@quartata print(end="")

@El'endiaStarman Ah, right.

@quartata sys.stdout.write

Does that work in Python 2?

cat
2:07 AM
Yes

k

@cat \o/ you're a kitty!

cat
In Python 2, you can also use print "a", note the trailing comma
@aditsu I am ^~^

@cat that is very weird syntax
-10^(number of bytes in Java program) to python

Humph. I have to actually do real life things instead of wasting away on TNB.

@Downgoat It is. Also, for writing to a file, one way in Python 2 was: print >>__import__("sys").stdout, "asd"
That no longer exists, along with the comma thing, because Python 2 didn't have keyword="arguments"

oh shit, I just relized when you exponentiate a negative number it becomes positive :|

not always

when does it not?

2:12 AM
when the power is odd...

Weirder things happen when the power is not integral.

OK I'm dumb. How do I output a raw byte in Python 2?
I know in 3 there's sys.stdout.buffer.write

2:13 AM
@quartata chr

cat
@El'endiaStarman

@Downgoat Doesn't work for >127
At least I presume

use python3

cat
@quartata Hmmm... can you rephrase that?

python2 is shit

2:13 AM
@cat Tsk tsk tsk...modifying the challenge after the task.

@cat If I have a number 5, I want to output the actual raw byte 05 not the number 5

2:15 AM
@quartata Oh. What's wrong with print >> __import__("sys").stdout, b"\x05"

I mean I have the number in a variable though.
Oh wait chr does work

chr(x)?

All right I have no idea what this is going to look like

yes

2:18 AM
@HelkaHomba I think, yes

@HelkaHomba yeah

OK, I think convert did the image dimensions wrong...
That's not right

@quartata nice picture

@Downgoat thanks it's supposed to look completely random

@quartata so it's modern art? I will buy it for $2,000,000

2:20 AM
if it doesn't look random call an information theory guy because something's wrong with the universe
Hrmph, ImageMagick is rather frustrating

@quartata more frustrating than JavaScript or less?

less

okay, good. Otherwise something is seriously wrong...

If you're using Python I'd suggest PIL

@HelkaHomba I have never been able to install PIL for some reason...

2:22 AM
so much better
what a quality avatar

Now that I think about it I'm not sure why I did this

2:29 AM
what did you do to your avatar‽‽‽‽‽‽‽‽

@quartata tis done

@AlexA. the problem is that, as it stands, literally every problem could be tagged with math.

Maybe I should have just stuck with the cute dog plan

@quartata yeah that would of been much better

because programming, fundamentally, is math

cat
2:31 AM

I was tempted to make my avatar an actual puzzle
but I didn't

it's tagged with , which is a subset of math

@NathanMerrill I think definitely "requires you to perform any kind of simple mathematical calculation" probably doesn't warrant the math tag. When programming you're of course going to have to do at least a tad of math to accomplish your task.

@Downgoat I just encrypted my avatar with a one-time pad

@quartata Yeah, now you're just a bunch of noise.

2:33 AM
@El'endiaStarman that means it's working

@AlexA. I don't think I've used any math in Chedda

Is math the primary focus, be it in terms of the task or the approach? => Should have [math] tag

cat
> Chedda

@Downgoat Formal language theory isn't a branch of math?

@quartata But y'know, humans naturally tune out noise from what they're listening to...

2:33 AM
I don't think it is

@AlexA. We make tags based on the approach?

Uh yes it is

I'm pretty sure tagging is based on the challenge, not on the answers

@NathanMerrill No, that was a poor choice of words on my part

ok :)

2:34 AM
@quartata if you knew the answer why did you ask it as a quesiton

@AlexA. so, Knot or not should have removed (in your opinion)?

cat
@Downgoat that goes for every question on puzzling

@NathanMerrill Yeah math seems unnecessary there (IMO)

cat
@NathanMerrill Why does that have ?

@cat Because knot theory

2:36 AM
because technically, everything is about math

A rhetorical question is a figure of speech in the form of a question that is asked to make a point rather than to elicit an answer. Though classically stated as a proper question, such a rhetorical device may be posed declaratively by implying a question, and therefore may not always require a question mark when written. Though a rhetorical question does not require a direct answer, in many cases it may be intended to start a discussion or at least draw an acknowledgement that the listener understands the intended message. A common example is the question "Can't you do anything right?" This question...

and the tag info doesn't help

cat
@NathanMerrill not really, it doesn't have anything to do with(Math); as far as I can tell

I figured that since you're a cat you'd know quite a bit about knot theory

@quartata that did not at all look or sound like a rhetorial questions

2:36 AM
no really. I guarantee, an entire field could be devoted to knot theory

cat
@quartata Well...

You know, because cats play with string? Heh he... he..

cat
:P
> with(Math);
did nobody laugh?

OK, my avatar is starting to give me a headache

2:37 AM
I need to find a new one
This was dumb
I look like a MissingNo

The Nineteenth Byte: Where there's an xkcd that applies to literally any situation.

@quartata who's missingno?

@Downgoat my childhood

It's a Pokémon in the original GameBoy game

oh ok

anyways, I guess my point is that since everything is pretty much math, it makes sense to make the questions tagged with it more specific
many of them already have the additional specificity needed
but unless we make the tag more specific, it provides little to no value

I guess I personally define math a little differently then, since I wouldn't consider Kolmogorov complexity or most string tasks to fall under the category of math.

oh no, I think I just lost the sun ;_;

@Downgoat (It's nighttime.)
(I'm sure you'll find it again tomorrow.)
In all seriousness, maybe there was a divide-by-almost-zero "error"?

2:44 AM
no I was just trying to center the sun, but it was using the actual sun's radius so it appeared off screen

@AlexA. I agree that the challenges don't feel mathy. Technically they are a subset of math
but that said, we both agree that they don't need the tag

Hrmph, I don't really want to go back to my old avatar.

@Downgoat ohhh lol

But I don't want to keep this one either.

switch to a dog

2:46 AM
no

but that said, even if we consider all of the tags listed on the tag info: [number] [number-theory] [arithmetic] [combinatorics] [graphs] [geometry] [field-theory]

Do a quart of tatas.

I reccomend using a picture of my dog

that still makes incredibly broad

@El'endiaStarman oh dear that won't work at all

2:50 AM
oh no, now I lost earth...WHY DO I KEEP LOSING ALL MY CELESTIAL BODIES

I could use a picture of my lizard but I don't remember how to strip geotagging (not like I really give a shit)
Hmm, I could do the new copperhead.

@quartata I think uploading it to imgur strips it

@Downgoat Really? hm.

Have any of you used a programming language that had really good (or unique) concurrent features?

@NathanMerrill Rust and Java

2:53 AM
@NathanMerrill JavaScript

I wouldn't say they were "unique" concurrent features

@quartata you already mentioned those earlier :)

Most languages stick to the basics

@NathanMerrill Rust!

@Downgoat JS has terrible concurrency

2:54 AM
why?

@quartata I quite like it, what are your qualms?

@NathanMerrill Julia!

Just not a fan of how Web Workers work. I don't see why they couldn't have given us regular threads . I also don't know of any mutex/monitor support which is something I like in Java

OH MY GOSH I MADE GRAVITY

I'm also not a fan of having to worry about whether browsers support Web Workers or not. I suppose that's true for all of JS's features though

2:57 AM
@quartata use babel

I actually watched a 1 hour video today on Go, and how they don't use mutexes or monitors

@Downgoat wow very pretty

instead of sharing memory, they share communication channels

Message passing is great

@quartata I strive to make my scientific simulators as pretty as possible

2:57 AM
But not many languages have it
The closest Java has to it is an Exchange

but I am very confused why earth is being flinged off into interstellar space

Pytek will have message passing though which I'm happy about

but I'm looking into Rust and Julia :)

Rust is the language for concurrency.
Like, it was literally built all around it.
So definitely look into that.
