1:00 AM
only 3 questions? is that normal?

@TheNumberOne yeah

solution to B is to get it wrong then do all the pushups and get ripped

got 1A
small

117
now #124

1:07 AM
ok, submitted 1A large...

#254 now
you should probably keep working instead of sending us messages
we can check your progress

got A small

@Doorknob Ditto.

@Doorknob ditto

got a plan for B

1:12 AM
go
do it
its like a big crossowrd
*word

@EasterlyIrk steam id?

nobody has done C still

@Doorknob hello yes

what are you doing round 1A started

@quartata gimme a mo
like the user id, the url one?
wait easterlyirk
number is 76561198299032288

1:16 AM
I think B is really easy if my plan works

@Doorknob Eating
Don't I have like 26 hours to do it or something?

2 and a half hours
go go go

2.5 i think
yeah lol

@Doorknob Why so little

WHY ARE YOU STILL CHATTING

1:18 AM
@AlexA. Because this time, you're playing for keeps.
35 mins ago, by Chris Jester-Young
Speed really is everything.

@Doorknob ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I'm also still eating
3

lmao

@ChrisJester-Young What am I keeping?

somebody got 100 already

1:20 AM
First you guys were on my case to eat, now you're telling me to stop eating to jam something or other. There are only so many hours in a day, folks.

how many, exactly?
wait
no
bye

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ so many

@AlexA. If you are among the top 1000 contestants, you get to go to Round 2.

@ChrisJester-Young HAHA that's not happening

@AlexA. I've gotten to Round 2 before.
Round 3, probably not.

1:22 AM
Yeah but you're brilliant

@AlexA. I wish.

Oh please.
You're one of the smartest dudes ever.

:D Round 1A

ludum dare is also now

1:27 AM
the first code jam is pretty easy

> (pick one)
D:

its a common misconception
birds dont actually eat food

@EasterlyIrk Can't find you. Profile link?

they get all their calories from the air they breathe

1:29 AM
got problem B small

and osmose water
which is why they always go in water fountains

submitted B large

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ Yep. Will fix.

these are actually really easy problems, compared to what I anticipated

@PhiNotPi It's only round 1.

1:34 AM
Dennis is #29!

dam son

A was surpisingly easy

@MarsUltor Unsurprisingly, you mean.

I thought it would be harder than qualifier

@MarsUltor It is. In that you have to get on the top 1000.

1:37 AM
@El'endiaStarman See the Pytek room

but the problems themselves are not

You still have to solve B and C faster than most contestants.

@quartata I did. I always check that room. :P

damnit, I started too late

@MarsUltor Yeah, in that case unless you can solve B and C super-fast, you may have to wait it out till Round 1B or 1C.

1:39 AM
@ChrisJester-Young that doesn't change the difficulty of the problems...
just the difficulty of qualifying

@poi830 Correct.
I believe I'm not going to pass Round 1A. The 1000th place is already at score 55, and I'm not going to bother to solve problem C.
So I'm going to go for 1B or 1C, if I can be bothered. ;-)
/me goes and eats tasty dinner.

@quartata I am "restricted" because I haven't spent 5 bucks yet. That may be why.
@ChrisJester-Young would friend if I could.

Ok, I've got a generic python question: when reading a file, it's only reading half of the file
like, there are 100 lines, but when doing readlines() I'm only getting 50 of them

1:47 AM
@NathanMerrill I'm betting you're doing while readline():.

What's the code look like?

with open("A-large.in", "r") as f:
    count = int(f.readline())
    print(count)
    print(len(f.readlines(count)))
my first print statement is 100
the second is 50

@EasterlyIrk Aye.

but there are 101 lines total (the first one indicating the number of test cases)
oh, the problem is my hint
welp, I failed A-large
:(

1:52 AM
@NathanMerrill Sorry; see you in Round 1B or 1C. ;-)

Just tested len(f.readlines()) myself, and it returned the proper number.

@Doorknob I read that as fiancée instead of fleece, lol.

Aaand I tried putting that number as an argument into readlines(), and it didn't work.
>>> help(f.readlines)
Help on built-in function readlines:

readlines(hint=-1, /) method of _io.TextIOWrapper instance
    Return a list of lines from the stream.

    hint can be specified to control the number of lines read: no more
    lines will be read if the total size (in bytes/characters) of all
    lines so far exceeds hint.

Who finished 1B? (Won't ask for anything prohibited)
I just want to ask if the algorithm is O(n^2)

seems like it would be O(n^2) if the heights are often the same

1:56 AM
if not?

lets not talk about the challenge

@ChrisJester-Young that fits better?
unless @MartinBüttner is really a llama.
oh @El'endiaStarman how did your engagement/marriage thing go?

@El'endiaStarman That explains it, really: it sounds like it stops reading after 100 characters.

@EasterlyIrk Eh?

I thought you were getting married soonish?

@El'endiaStarman That explains it, really: it sounds like it stops reading after 100 characters.

Mar 1 at 0:50, by El'endia Starman
@EasterlyIrk I need a "Soon!" option.

No date set yet, we're both going to get jobs first.

oh okay
gl

"Soon" in the sense that it's definitely going to happen sooner or later. :P

its not 100 characters
because each line has at least 3 or more characters

2:00 AM
(You only had girlfriend/wife as the options.)

and it stopped at line 50

In any case, the argument passed to readlines is not the number of lines to read.

@EasterlyIrk added

s/:shrug:/¯\\_(ツ)_/¯/
@quartata oooh
@ChrisJester-Young can yous friend message me?
crap i need 5 bucks
any donators?

2:03 AM
You two should both join TNB steam group

theres a tnb steam group?

yes

Yep!
It's by invite only though so give me your Steam name and I'll invite you :)

im poi830

@AlexA. easterlyirk

2:05 AM
Actually your current name is riket.wachtler

o_o I think my computer just overheated, paniced, and shit down......

You can change aliases on edit profile
*riker

Wow, almost all of the starred items visible on the star board are from 2 hours ago.
Must've been a hilarious time. :P

@poi830 So there's poi830 and poi830alt, the former with location Antarctica and the latter Houston, TX.

im poi830

2:08 AM
k

poi830alt isnt even my alt account, its my cousins lmao

So Antarctica it is then

yep
that is where i live

Invitation sent!

thanks

2:09 AM
@EasterlyIrk I can't find that name

@AlexA. cky944
@EasterlyIrk It's too much effort for me to log into Steam at the moment, sorry.

@AlexA. He's riker.wachtler; check my friend list

@ChrisJester-Young Sent!

@AlexA. :-D

@EasterlyIrk Invitation sent!

2:11 AM
done

Yay, C-small is correct.

@AlexA. oh hm

I sent the invite to riker.wachtler and that account has the same avatar as your SE account so I assume it's you

2:22 AM
Shouldn't have drank this can of Red-Bull...

@Jakube CHUG CHUG CHUG CHUG
ANOTHER ONE

Okay, so I've concluded that I suck at this. I was super close to getting problem B. Then I realized I spent an hour on one approach when I could have done it in 10 minutes max with a far simpler and more obvious approach. I'm an idiot >_<

@Doorknob idiot

@orlp CHOO CHOO

I should go to bed. It's 4:22 AM! Didn't expect to finish GCJ so quickly ;-)

2:23 AM
@orlp harsh

@poi830 it's what he said :(

@Doorknob You're not an idiot. Sometimes the obvious approach isn't at all obvious at first, especially under pressure. You did great in my book regardless.

Book?

"in my book" is a saying

@HelkaHomba Alex is secretly keeping a book of secrets on all of us

2:25 AM
Tribulations of the PPCGGCJers?
@AlexA. Not in my book

._.

D_D

@AlexA. nah, I maybe could have made it past this round if I stopped to use my brain instead of being stupid -_-

@HelkaHomba Ɑ_Ɑ
@Doorknob ಠ_ಠ

still can't think of an algorithm for 1B less than O(2^n)...
(Don't reply)

2:28 AM
@KennyLau Okay I won't reply

@KennyLau okay

lol

@AlexA. punkolantern

ahhhh can't get B to work

@Doorknob If it's any consolation, when I found out that only 1000 people advance past this round, I decided not to try at all. So the fact that you tried at all means you did better than I did. :P

@AlexA. Are you nuts? You're being way too complimentary.

Is it nuts to be complimentary?

2:35 AM
@AlexA. Don't worry, I just found out how code jam works like 30 min ago

@AlexA. /joke failed

spent too much time on 1B

I can't get C to work.... :(

maybe 1C would be easier

@GamrCorps Haha. This is the first year I've attempted it at all. I passed the qualification round but I decided not to pursue it further. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

2:37 AM
Anyone see the issue with C test case #2?
4
3 3 4 1

How accurate is this Canadian? I only know a few words.

They say the answer's 3
but why not the ordering 1 3 2 4?

@PhiNotPi 3 wants to be next to its BFF 4.

Aw they're besties

@HelkaHomba That took me several seconds to get. I'm so used to faces going from left to right...

2:42 AM
@AlexA. they're annoying besties that make my program not work :/

If I give up B and C will I be able to join round2?

you still have 1b and 1c

I mean if I give up 1B and 1C will I be able to join round 2?

The rounds are labeled 1A, 1B, and 1C.
The problems, then, would be 1A-a, 1A-b, 1A-c if you want to be unambiguous.

oh..
If I give up 1A-b, 1A-c, will I be able to join round 1B?

2:52 AM
Yes

yeah
@MarsUltor you stuck also? D:

RIP my answer for C

I'm stuck on B D:

B turned to spaghetti for me. Working on C right now.

@KennyLau You have to be in the top 1000. That's all.

2:54 AM
B was super easy with a special trick

@TheNumberOne hahaha same

gives up

@PhiNotPi Shit

Sp3000 also made it.
