Hi
Those commit messages
> Oh long johnson
@AlexA. Yeah, I know, lol
@AlexA. debatesvdebates.txt
@Doorknob Also, it deliberately breaks on Windows, as well as Mexican or Chinese machines.
> But look at me I came to this election to make guys

I will fight for Joe the guy
he is for a fact a hero
I will make us false
he is not false?

What should I put in here?
I'm trying to build an underground base in one of my creative worlds

@AlexA. ?
scroll up
00:18
allo
@SuperJedi224 tnt room
Yes I made the room by blowing up three blocks of tnt at the end of the hall
hey @Doorknob do you have any plans with your "Who are you" post?
And then I had to fix the last couple lights in the hall
(besides "Read & Consider")?
@SuperJedi224 I mean, fill the room with TNT
00:21
Maybe
@NathanMerrill It's one of several related things I've been thinking about a lot lately. I've been planning for a long time to post several other meta questions soliciting discussion/thought/etc. as well. I was hoping to get more responses to the general question, though. :(
@NathanMerrill He's going to use it to conquer France.
SHHHH
@Doorknob I was hoping for more too.
Oh sorry. I mean not conquer France.
00:24
I really wish I could get the syntax for reduce down :P
> For example, you may need to ask yourself Trump is "the best"? (although we all know that would evaluate to fact anyway)
I sincerely hope that is sarcasm.
@Doorknob were you just looking for ways help bring the site out of beta?
or was there a different problem you were trying to solve?
If you want to graduate, get the mod(s) to do pun-a-day in the Lounge and ping Spolsky.
Did that actually work for you?
Yeah.
00:28
@Hosch250 Wait, you are one of us too!!
@RikerW You and me, both
We stole your soul, so you must help us graduate.
2
@Hosch250 Pun-a-day?
Pun-a-day to get us partially graduated, and ping Spolsky to get the upped privs and design.
@RikerW I just did. I told you how to graduate.
Writers, Prolog Programmers, and TI-BASIC programmers
@Hosch250 I'm fairly certain that the moderators here generate more than just one pun per day.
00:34
;_; MSDN is down
@NathanMerrill Not really. It was more so a "primer," so to speak, to a larger discussion about the eventual goal/fate/ambitions of the site, regardless of whether graduation happens. Some of the ideas in the "why are you here?" meta post are cribbed from some things Alex and Martin have expressed in The Other Room. (There's a few things in the mod room about this that I wish were said in public, but oh well.)
Easy solution: Make everybody mods.
Star if you agree/want to be a PPCG mod. :P
(Count it starred by me)
@NathanMerrill To summarize, the "why are you here?" was primarily to figure out... well, why people come here in the first place, aside from just "to have fun." I thought that would help with fitting into the SE model/mission (Martin had been discussing that), continuing to innovate and keeping things fresh (okay, that one's directly plagiarized from @AlexA. :P), etc.
@RikerW I agree (But do I count?)
@Doorknob What, I said that?
00:38
> PPCG mod
@Zizouz212 ^
Yeah, yeah...
I would probably be scared looking at everything...
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ Agreed.
RESTAR!!! :P
> "Listen you motherfucker, we're going to tax you 25 percent!"
WTF?
I think it's okay to quote myself from a private room. Can I do that? Here:
@AlexA. Do you post them in the Lounge like rolfl did?
00:40
> I've been thinking about stuff like that recently too
<rambling>
So, the SE mission is to provide a repository of high-quality content.
That is to say, it would be ideal if PPCG could have a purpose other than "it's fun to golf."
The reason for "it's fun to golf" is that golfing is a good way to practice programming for no particular reason.
Solving tasks is inherently fun, if that makes any sense.
(Spec-writing is also a useful skill.)
@Doorknob [3 messages up] But going back to this, "to practice programming" isn't a bad elevator pitch for PPCG... okay, well it's bad, but could be worse
@Hosch250 Nope
@NathanMerrill (see also ^)
00:42
In me and @AlexA.'s defense:
> Windows? 'The big problem this country has is being PC'
haha
@AlexA. wait, do you actually use mac?
Not safari on windows?
A long time ago I used Safari on Windows until it stopped recognizing the action of scrolling up.
This is why too many acronyms can be a bad thing
@Hosch250 For the record, that, um, slightly irritated some people, so he stopped a while before CR graduation.
00:43
@AlexA. So do you use mac?
@RikerW But I've been an actual Mac user for several years now
@RikerW Yes ^
Okay.
Good.
Sync?
Nah..
Is it just me, or are there an awful lot of challenges on the active questions board involving guessing/prediction?
I guess
5
8.7 q/day, by the way. And I have one "due" today (for NYR) :P
00:44
@AlexA. reloads shotgun
@MartinBüttner doesn't want to be a meme, so mine is shelved for the time being. :(
@AlexA. me: "why are people starri- OH HAHAHA"
4
lol
@Doorknob That was the total point.
So... not understanding a joke gets... stars? I'm confused.
:P the irony is thick
00:46
IDK.
I'm watching seconds count down until a video conference thing at my U pertaining to my internship/graduation.
About 8 minutes left, so I'll be leaving then.
kay.
@Doorknob I'll try to write an answer to the "Who are you" post when I have time.
Play nethack for the time being.
nethack?
00:47
@Zgarb that would be awesome, thanks :)
@Zgarb Where is that post?
@Doorknob don't tell him yet.
Where was that link, the best game in the world one?
I might write an answer, if I'm eligible.
@Hosch250 of course you're eligible! The more answers to that, the better.
00:48
27
Q: Who are you? Why are you here? And more introspection

DoorknobWhereas: we are unsure about where exactly we fit into the SE mission others sometimes don't take us seriously the site has been languishing in beta with minimal communication from SE for years we have, after receiving explicit advice to expand our horizons, consistently failed to do so I hav...

@RikerW Why wouldn't we tell him?
Cause the link.
Seriously, that is a very accurate description of it.
Oh, I thought you meant tell him about the "who are you" post.
Oh no. lol
That third point sounds like CR, waiting for word a year after the announcement.
00:52
BTW @AlexA. this post could have kept the support tag, changed to . :P
OK, I'd like the site to have more KOTH. I think it would be cool to consistently have an even number of CG and KOTH on the front page.
@Zgarb maybe this ought to be pinned?
It would encourage people who use verbose languages to participate, I think.
I have an idea for an agario KOTH.
GTG for video thing.
@Hosch250 I disagree. I think KOTH challenges have their place and should always be welcome here, but I personally wouldn't want as many as there are code golf.
IDK
That would also be prohibitively difficult, since KotHs are really hard to make, and even harder to make properly
b=['hello,','world'];alert`${b.join`\n`}`
00:55
@Quill Perhaps. I'm not a mod though, so I can't pin it.
How come this prints a comma to the alert?
@Quill You mean pinned as a chat message or ?
@Doorknob I meant the former, but the latter sounds good too?
s/dd/tt/
00:56
(sorry :P)
hahahaha
sorry alt-tabbing really hard right now
@Quill ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
@Quill Maybe. The vast majority of users never visit chat, though, so I'm not sure how much good a pinned message would do
00:58
Featured makes more sense to me.
Is it feature-worthy?
yes
Might be a better idea to wait until after Best Of is over
and there's like 25 people in chat rn, I'm sure pinning would do a little good, at least
but meh
@Doorknob That's a good idea
> In a week or so, we'll be adding separate questions for the actual voting
@AlexA. I have an idea for one that I'm writing in the sandbox
01:00
posted 12 days ago
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ Nice!
I spent all of health class designing it :P
Oh, incidentally, Time Capsule got knocked off the starboard and there haven't been any new responses for a week. I think we're pretty much finished (/cc @Calvin'sHobbies)
Grand total of 74 responses.
Plus one response that didn't give a username, one fake trichoplax, and one username of "PLS SEND TEH CODES."
(But those don't count. :P)
How many unique characters?
@Doorknob Wait that was my brother. Sorry.
I didn't know he actually sent it.
He barely codes, and is 8.
01:04
that's nice! :D
Get them started young
@Zgarb 37
(He says, being a 15 year-old :P)
@Doorknob whoa
I started at 7.
literally, there are two of each character
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ I think the majority of people here are minors
01:05
7.6 ish.
@RikerW o-o nice! I started when I was 11
@Quill agreed.
@Quill Definitely.
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ So 4 years?
01:05
5.6 for me.
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ ninjaed
Bit late.. :P
mehhhhh
@RikerW \o/
@Quill At the moment probably. How old are you? I'm 25.
He is older than Peter.
@AlexA. 17, and it serves that the moderators are probably older.
All but @Doorknob. :P
01:07
except @Doorknob, but he's a rarity
@Doorknob started at like 12/13
AFAIK I'm still the youngest moderator
just a few months ahead of hichris
What site is hichris on?
@Doorknob and started when?
01:08
ninja'd
@Doorknob You are the same age as me... o_o
And @CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ
@Doorknob So 13?
01:09
My age?
Now I'm really scared.
@ՊՓԼՃՐՊՃՈԲՍԼ He started at 12, so..
@RikerW Yes
Okay.
@ՊՓԼՃՐՊՃՈԲՍԼ Why? It's not like the moderators actually hold our lives in their hands--UGH
01:10
Seriously about to say "When did you turn 13?"...
I want to jump out the window and land 3 feet below.
2
facepalm
@ՊՓԼՃՐՊՃՈԲՍԼ lol
@ՊՓԼՃՐՊՃՈԲՍԼ Says the dude with the creepy icon...
:P
@RikerW That is a mask of my inner fear.
So I look at other betas, and on the main page like 30-50% of question have no answer.
I think PPCG is lucky in that regard.
It's kinda just a result of the fact that PPCG isn't a "real" Q&A site
01:16
@Doorknob That fake trichoplax may have been me...I'm trying to remember
ಠ_ಠ
@Doorknob this
Can someone test this out for me?
@Calvin'sHobbies I can't believe you've done this
01:18
ahhh my mechanical pencil just exploded and lead went everywhere
What questions could one possibly ask about Legos? Isn't the entire premise just to put blocks together however you want?
@Doorknob RIP pencil 2016
never forget
@AlexA. except there's like 40 years worth of products, meaning you can ask about sets and stuff
> beta
ooh, sites onebox
01:19
@Quill Ah
@Calvin'sHobbies You onebox my heart.
@AlexA. Looks like their top 3 tags are all about the different robots.
oh yeah logo robots too
There are Lego robots?
Are they autonomous?
Do they put together pieces of children just as children put together Legos?

Lego Mindstorms EV3 is the third generation robotics kit in Lego's Mindstorms line. It is the successor to the second generation Lego Mindstorms NXT 2.0 kit. The "EV" designation refers to the "evolution" of the Mindstorms product line. "3" refers to the fact that it is the third generation of computer modules - first was the RCX and the second is the NXT. It was officially announced on January 4, 2013 and was released in stores on September 1, 2013. The education edition was released on August 1, 2013. There are many competitions using this set. Among them are the First Lego League and the World...
@AlexA. alexiswrong.stackexchange.com
> The Q&A site alexiswrong.stackexchange.com doesn't seem to exist… yet.
oh no
Someone please test this? It works on my computer, but that doesn't mean it works elsewhere
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ It could have questions like "Who is Alex?" "Why is Alex wrong?" "Will Alex ever be right?"
@Calvin'sHobbies A1: Alex is Wrong. A2: See A1. A3: See A3.
@Cyoce what's it supposed to do?
TypeError: source is undefined
detour-es5.js:34:6
01:31
33. var source = $("#source")[0].innerText,
34. lines = source.split("\n"),
35. input_y,
36. input_x;
wtf
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ I have no clue at this point
Ah, that explains it.
You're using jQuery.
what
JK, it's $("#source")[0].innerHTML not .innerText
ok hey did nobody notice this or what because O_O
12 mins ago, by Alex A.
Do they put together pieces of children just as children put together Legos?
01:33
But I don't want the HTML. I want the text.
@Doorknob I did.
I starred it.
@Cyoce That is what it does.
Go figure.
@Cyoce Well, .innerText isn't an actual attribute.
@RikerW (He wants < instead of <)
@Cyoce You should really just use a textarea
lol about to post the same.
@Cyoce code to test?
huh?
BTW your CSS for the source is messed up. You need a min-height attribute
And what do I do with it? I'm bad with CSS
@Cyoce Like what code to put into the input box?
Oh, it isn't working cause there is no text in the input box...
01:38
<T>R+.
;\$<
With input of 6 should alert 8
Works for me.
OHH!!!!
IT IS FIREFOX + JQUERY HATE.
Also works on my grandfather's ancient PC running opera on windows XP
@Cyoce min-height: 1.2em should do the trick.
@Cyoce made out of sandstone
aztec markings riddle the tower
@Quill using dominoes instead of circuits

Still undefined
$("#source")[0].innerText gives "" for me.
Yeah I'm pretty sure this is firefox being picky
Then don't worry, it is @CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ's fault.
@Doorknob I noticed it ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
01:42
Is there a built-in for unescaping html like window.unescape for URLs?
Nope.
Just do a simple replace of < and >.
ORRRR use a textarea!
and &
converting to textarea...
Good.
Thank goodness.
01:44
which attribute does textarea use?
9 mins ago, by Cᴏɴᴏʀ O'Bʀɪᴇɴ
@Cyoce You should really just use a textarea
is it value?
and with jQuery that's .val() right
I don't know.
I don't use jQuery.
01:45
^
it is .val()
yes, .val() returns a value, and .val("") sets a val
@Quill I though you hate Jquery?
Are you acquainted with the fiendish ways of jQuery?
I do. I'm just a web dev, I have to know these things work
lol
love it
RIP
I already figured that out.
No, we must all convert to Mootoolz
01:49
Is there a site for "let me console.log that for you"?
@Quill I do work?
@ՊՓԼՃՐՊՃՈԲՍԼ Mootoolz?
Yes Mootoolz is our lord and saviour
@Doorknob I would attempt to define our site's purpose is "To improve coding proficiency".
NVM google
@NathanMerrill lol
01:50
@RikerW You can read about it in ancient scrolls from before the time of the code golf
No way.
@NathanMerrill TanMath even said that he got worse since coming here...
His did have other problems though.
we aren't teaching people how to code (Stack over flow) or how to code cleanly (code review)
We are teaching how to code badly.
01:51
@RikerW irrelevant. Each person can use this site how he likes, and if he really is worse off, then it is his own fault
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ try it now. Let's see what fresh horror Firefox cooks up this time
@NathanMerrill Yeah, still more like archaic/weird/inventive ways to code badly shorter.
I find that while your code is less of a best practice, you learn methods/functions/ways to do stuff that's out-of-the-box
like the with operator in JavaScript
(shiver)
I've been code-golfing for so long that none of my coding friends understand me.
01:53
you are bread
covered in mold
hehe sorry to ruin le fun
le fun has been ruined.
thanks a lot
why did they have to put the enter key next to the quote key?
@ՊՓԼՃՐՊՃՈԲՍԼ Same.
@Cyoce IDK
01:55
@Cyoce ಠ_ಠ
It has caused so much strife
Switch to Dvorak.
I don't know where any of the keys are there, but they're probably not the same.
you need a quick post button that posts "ಠ_ಠ" or "i cant believe youve done this" on click
@AlexA. Dvorak is for Firefox lovers.
01:57
@AlexA. divorak has -_ next to enter
@Quill Have that...
@RikerW ಠ_-_ಠ
Can I have the quiz version of that?
@Quill Not a liar..
But on other computer.
Will send if you want.
@RikerW Why teh FireFox hate?
:3
01:58
Cause firefox should be hated on, almost as bad as perl.
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ I don't hate firefox. firefox hates me
Oh I see.
@RikerW ಠ_ಠ
@RikerW I have it on my other computer too (srs)
This is an actual website: fullof.bs
