@MartinBüttner I had a catalog idea: Calculate exp(i*pi) (Euler's identity)

Anonymous
It would show off how to deal with complex numbers and call mathematical functions in each language, both of which are important tasks

@AlexA. I just don't see how ad revenue for free apps could get you enough money to make it worth it (unless you already had a large population)
Paid apps probably do OK.

11:13 PM
@quartata Grow the userbase, collect information, sell it

If you're not the customer, you're the product

Hmm

And often there will be two versions of an app: A free one which has ads and limited features, and a paid one with extended features and no ads.
That adds incentive to pay for the app, but in the meantime you still get some revenue from the ads on the free version.

1 hour left to get 125 more rep to mortarboard... I don't think that's gonna happen :/

11:15 PM
I don't know. With Google Play having a pretty large audience now, it just seems like it would make more sense for small developers to just stick with Android. IIRC you just have to pay a $25 fee once.

On a related note, the fact that British people say "adverts" as the colloquial term for "advertisements" drives me nuts.

@AlexA. This

Come on guys, "ads" is shorter.

Adverts sounds... like something related to math to me. I don't know why.

@quartata Not everyone is an Android user. ;)

11:17 PM
@AlexA. Right, but I think it makes more sense to start on Android, establish a userbase and then make an iOS port once you have the userbase.

Anonymous
Or use Xamarin and dual-develop

Then the Android users can tell all their friends about the iOS version.
@Mego That works too.

Anonymous
Silly @quartata, Android users don't have iOS friends

Anonymous
Either the Android users disowned their friends when they went to iOS, or one got tired of the other's constant elitism

@quartata It only makes sense to start on Android if you're familiar with the platform. I've only used an Android device once or twice; my friend and my mom have them and that's it.

11:18 PM
Developers may prefer Apple for prototyping since they only have to test on one device.

@Mego Well, I do. I guess that means I need to get lynched

Meanwhile the 3 people on Windows Phone get along great

They all get to cry together about how much the OS sucks.

Anonymous
Windows Phone has a decent OS... The issue is that the store is a barren wasteland

I despise the Windows mobile OS.

Anonymous
11:19 PM
And developing for Windows Phone isn't bad

Anonymous
The biggest issue is how late to the game Windows Phone was

It has no defining advantages over the existing contenders
So being late to the game was basically the final nail in the coffin

Anonymous
Nobody wanted to switch from iOS or Android to Windows Phone, so no apps were made. Because there are no apps, nobody wants to switch. And so the vicious cycle continues.

Why would anyone want to switch from iOS? ;)

Anonymous
Sideloading apps?

11:21 PM
Idk what that is

@AlexA. that's a good point; nobody should want to be on iOS in the first place anyway :P

Anonymous
My biggest gripe about my iPhone is that I can't develop apps for it

@Mego That would be interesting, though not many languages have built-in complex support (That I know of)

@Doorknob >:O

Anonymous
Sideloading = loading an app on a device through an unofficial method, like bypassing the app store

11:22 PM
@Mego return -1 do i win

Anonymous
@AlexA. No

Anonymous
You never win

@Mego You can, it just requires $99 USD/year if you want to actually use them outside of an iOS emulator.

@AlexA. Yes, you do, and you get cookies and a goat.

FUCK YEAH A GOAT
2
It's all I've ever wanted
Cookies and a goat
I just have to make sure the goat doesn't get to the cookies before I do.

11:24 PM
"You have a goat, a wolf, and a cabbage plant"

Anonymous
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ You could still approximate exp(z) with the Maclauren series

Or you could always return -1 because what's the point if you know the answer

Anonymous
exp(z) = sum from n=0 to infty of z^n/n!

Anonymous
@AlexA. The point is to demonstrate working with complex values and mathematical functions in your language of choice

11:26 PM
I feel like that could be accomplished in a more general sense, like compute exp(i*x), where x is a real number taken from STDIN.
If it's always pi then it kills the interest

Anonymous
@AlexA. Yeah that would probably be better

> It really gets my goat
what

Anonymous
Or maybe generalize it more to exp(z), where z is a complex value taken from STDIN

Anonymous
In whatever way is convenient (a+bi, r,t, re,im, etc.)

11:29 PM
^ that's better

Parsing complex values could be rather annoying in some languages but that's not a bad idea, especially because then you can come up with a way to emulate complex functions without having native complex support.

I'm an idiot, why can't I English

Because you can only Welsh

What is this\
who uses strict in js

11:31 PM
I copied it from Code Review (don't kill me)

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ but what

@AlexA. ಠ_ಠ

@anOKsquirrel Four is the Cosmic Number.

@Doorknob ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ but what is the sequence? 6 to 3 to 5...
wat

Okay guys, is this a duplicate?

A: Sandbox for Proposed Challenges

El'endia StarmanHow much can this sequence be compressed? code-golf Consider this sequence: 010011000111000011110000011111 Now, you can collapse subsequences that are entirely composed of the same character by adding a number in front. For convenience, let's assume the number and character are always disting...

Hi @El'endiaStarman :3

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ k thanks

No probs ^_^

oh, I see
cool

11:34 PM
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ Hello. :) ..... Answer my question!

@El'endiaStarman Sounds like a question for @PeterTaylor. :P

@El'endiaStarman XD yeah it is

Yes, I would say that it is a duplicate. — Peter Taylor 3 hours ago

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ I actually remember doing this to myself a while back lol

11:34 PM
@PeterTaylor: I knew you would; you commented on one of the linked questions that you voted to close it as a duplicate of the other. I do want to get more feedback from others in the community. Thank you for your input though. :) — El'endia Starman 2 mins ago

@anOKsquirrel noice :D

Anonymous
It's a dupe imo

@El'endiaStarman Why would you need any feedback other than Peter's?

Anonymous

Peter is the way, Peter is the light

11:35 PM
@AlexA. 'cause he unilaterally closed my Huffman coding question and other people reopened it.

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ Also, after a certain point (i think a hundred) every number is bigger than the number of letters, so it decreases until that point, and then it goes to 4

@anOKsquirrel o-O
THANKSSSS

@El'endiaStarman To be fair I agreed with him on that one.

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ welcome lol

YOU HELP ME WITH PROOFY STUFF

Anonymous
11:36 PM
Peter does have a tendency to be VTC-happy

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ But first, find the exact number
please :P

The exact number is 5.
JK

John Kennedy?

Easy search tho

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ Maybe so...

11:37 PM
Okay, to confirm, I have three people here who agree with Peter in this instance: @CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ, @Mego, and @AlexA.. Right?

Anonymous
@El'endiaStarman Correctamundo

Oui

@El'endiaStarman Agree that it's a dupe? yeah, that's me, sorry.

It's alright. It's better to find out while it's in the sandbox. :)

11:38 PM
So I'm trying to do a golf in Pyth, and I just came across a hash collision that breaks the only real way to make it fast. :P

So the largest number whose value is smaller than the length of its english representation is surely below 1 million

Anonymous
Calculate lengths of numbers between 1 and 1 million, and figure out the largest whose representation's length is larger than its value

I should go do that

Anonymous
Mini-golf go

11:40 PM
Wait, let's actually make this into a challenge

Anonymous
Nah

yeah

Anonymous
It's not interesting enough to be an actual challenge

maybe.

Anonymous
Not in that form, at least

11:41 PM
Also it would have to have up to like 10e54 which would suck

Anonymous
Maybe "Cosmic Number Golf", where you calculate the cosmic sequence

Anonymous
Given an input value

read above post

^^ it's already in sandbox

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ but to how much? decillion?

11:41 PM
The length of the representation is going to be larger than about 10 * floor(log10(number) / 3), so I think it's under a million.

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ linkydink?

@AlexA. what do you mean?

@anOKsquirrel strawpoll.me/5975358 <-- WinRAR poll :D

@Pietu1998 voted, btw winrar sucks

@Pietu1998 7z ftw

@Mego yesyesyes

@anOKsquirrel I had a demo open to try to figure out how to use something. I didn't know how to close it and I clicked "delete." It asked me if I was sure and said there was no going back and I was like "okay whatever." Now the demo is gone and I have no idea how to use the thing.

@Mego @anOKsquirrel True, I also use 7-Zip nowadays

Am I right in thinking that WinRAR is basically built into modern Windows OSes?

@AlexA. what game?

11:46 PM
Game?
No game

or what thing?

NinjaKit

what were you doing

@El'endiaStarman Sort of

ninjakit?

11:46 PM
NinjaKit.
It's like Greasemonkey for Safari

@El'endiaStarman No, Windows can't open most archives and create anything but ZIPs.

SamuraiCat

don't use Safari :P

What

The Game is a mental game where the objective is to avoid thinking about The Game itself. Thinking about The Game constitutes a loss, which must be announced each time it occurs. It is impossible to win most versions of The Game. Depending on the variation of The Game, the whole world, or all those aware of the game, are playing it all the time. Tactics have been developed to increase the number of people aware of The Game and thereby increase the number of losses. The origins of The Game are unknown; a game featuring ironic processing was played by Leo Tolstoy in 1840. The Game has received media...

@Seadrus nope, sorry

266 of the views on my coding blog are from IE. ಠ_ಠ

@phase Jesus Christ dude

@AlexA. your browser signifies whether you deserve to live or not

@Dennis I find that I only really like the first 3 seasons.
When it was more about medical mysteries than character drama.
@phase Safari. Should I line up behind the guillotine?

Those were the best, yeah.
They still had plenty of drama though.

Oh yeah

11:58 PM
@AlexA. IE=guillotine, Safari=rope, Chrome=slap in the face

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ no need to brag

@phase So you're a Firefox user then? :P

@AlexA. No, I use Chrome. I don't like it, but I use it.

@phase ಠ_ಠ y u no use ffx?

11:59 PM
Use something else then?

FF is amazing
use it

@phase Tbh, I'd rather use IE than Firefox.
