@AlexA. Another carryover from British times: you drive on the right in China and drive on the left in Hong Kong. :-P
@ChrisJester-Young :O
@AlexA. Aye. And FWIW I thought Martin was in London, but maybe he's finished the Masters now.
Macau drives on the left too!
@AlexA. Geographically, Hong Kong is in Guangdong province. People in Guangdong province largely speak Cantonese, and so most Hong Kongers speak Cantonese. However, there's a really interesting quirk to this. On the Chinese border right on the other side of Hong Kong, is a city called Shenzhen, and because it's a major tech centre with lots of immigrants from other parts of China, Shenzhen is composed mostly of Mandarin speakers.
Which is odd, because the Portuguese drive on the right..
20:06
@Vioz- Yeah, no idea what that's about.
I wonder if there's any place that has car prices as high as Singapore did..
A new Chevy Cruze is $110k SGD (~$79k USD)
My roommate drives a Chevy Cruze
Can you imagine spending $79k on one? :P
No way! I would get a Tesla at that price.
Exactly! They don't even sell Tesla's in Singapore
But if they did it would probably be in the $500k SGD range
20:12
You just can't win...
Let's take a good example: A brand new, base price Maserati GranTurismo Sport in the states is about $130k
My friend's dad bought one in Singapore with a couple upgrades for $700k SGD ($501k USD)
Such expense. Amaze.
Yeah, it's nuts.
However, a lot of people in Singapore who work in a half-decent job do get a lot of company benefits, especially the expats
For example, when I was there, my dad's company paid for us to go to a private school, paid the rent on a house, and paid for the car
Wow, nice.
Yeah, very cushy.
20:17
according to my quick google, avg income is almost double in Singapore compared to USA
Yeah, not surprised
But, everything there is extremely expensive by most people's standards
Like, our family-of-4 house's rent was somewhere around $11,000/mo
yea I feel ya dig
20:41
Is it a coincidence that the starboard is on the starboard side?
Yes
No
Idk
21:44
@PeterTaylor indeed. I moved back in June and I'm currently in (German) limbo.
That's not what your profile page says. :P
It'd be cool if you could link your profile to your phone so it auto updates
Or just the IP you log in with
@Dennis I know. But I don't intend to fix it until I've arrived somewhere I will stay for longer (which will probably be in late September, early October)
I guess I could change it to limbo :P
I was going to suggest that.
Shog9 has not looking over your shoulder, IIRC.
@MartinBüttner So, does that mean you're German? I've been wondering ever since you revealed your full name. :P
That was quick. Too bad user profiles don't have upvote buttons.
@Dennis yes it does
My previous user name was m.buettner though. Did "Martin" really give it away? :P

Ein Landsmann!
Wait what? :D
I thought you were from South America originally
Changing ue to ü helped.
I live in South America, but I was born and raised in Germany.
Oh, I had no idea. Although I did wonder where you learned German.
At home. :P
You don't say ;)
22:01
Where did you learn English?
At school, in theory, but I was really, really bad at it. Using computers and, later, the internet, taught me better than any teacher could ever have.
In school. It's mandatory starting in year 5.
Well and then you start reading English books, watching English films and TV series, and use the internet...
...and move to London...
I think it's the London. :P
Although watching TV sure helped me too. Since I moved here, I watch my movies and TV series in English w/Spanish subtitles.
I see. I doubt I'll ever get to use French as much as you
The funny part is that it helped me learning Spanish at first.
22:38
@Dennis what part of Germany are you from?
@MartinBüttner I was born in NRW, but moved to Niedersachsen when I was 4 years old.
I lived in a very small village. The nearest town was Holzminden.
And you?
Ah okay (not that I've ever heard of Holzminden)
I grew up in Saxony-Anhalt (which is where I am now). I'm born in Leipzig, but (unfortunately) I never lived there.
Linefeed is the same thing as newline, correct?
Sort of. A linefeed is a newline, but a newline could be a linefeed, a carriage return or a combination of the two.
All newlines in GolfScript are linefeeds.
22:53
@MartinBüttner Depending on where exactly in Sachsen-Anhalt, we were almost neighbors.
Well, no, but a two hour car ride apart.
23:50
@Dennis Google Maps told me, "Sorry, we could not calculate directions from 'Seattle, WA' to 'Paraguay'" haha
Come on, Google. There's only about 9 countries separating those destinations.
@xnor Going to run for elected office? And by that I mean PPCG moderator?
