@PeterTaylor I'm not extremely-well versed in the math, but wasn't Babbage's Difference Engine intended to aid in the publishing of function tables for purposes like Actuarial planning and ocean navigation? IIRC there was at least one publisher who introduced errors in the data for the purpose of copy-protection.
On a similar thread would be emulating the IBM 1620, a bcd computer which lacked arithmetic (nicknamed CADET, "can't add; doesn't even try"). ... But the other CPU challenges have not been golfs.

Sigh, still hoping more of the Bezier answerers can extend to 3D and do the teapot...

A: The problem with sandboxes, and a proposed solution

HowardI want to throw in an option which doesn't take the nuke-approach but also doesn't require a new site: Use the sandbox even if the OP posts it on the main site. When we encounter a question which we think should and can be enhanced (with some effort) we may migrate the question to sandbox man...

I'd be interested in your comments. I don't know yet if it is feasable or should be done. But I feel that we have to discuss some solutions.
07:38
@PeterTaylor No, I'm not using any flags. I just tried using -client after reading about -server but that didn't make any noticeable difference. I'll have to remember for the next time I do one of these that I should start the programs once and keep feeding the programs through stdin.
@Howard I think your idea is better than what we currently have - it'll get the poor challenges off the main site and into rehab quickly and make the questions easier to find in the sandbox. But the sandboxes will still get large and unwieldy quite quickly.

@Doorknob Done.
@ChrisJester-Young Well, a mod-nuke works just as well :P thanks
:-D
@Gareth As you can see from the "Theory of Moderation" post, moderators on SE are supposed to be hands-off.
Otherwise, you will get massive outcry of "mod abuse!!!111one!" (just look at a variety of posts on Meta Stack Overflow to get an idea).
@Doorknob Finally, someone who understands. :-D
15:44
Wtf this was upvoted?!?! @Chris Nuke plz? :-P
16:09
@Doorknob Done.
16:22
@Doorknob Does someone has a working compiler yet? Mine is not 100% correct
Compiler for what?
@Rusher Click on that little arrow to the left of my message :)
Oh neat. I never thought to hover my mouse over that little arrow

Who is ready for Friday Night Magic?

Can someone help me understand this question? codegolf.stackexchange.com/q/24481/18487
He says to output the winning move. What is the winning move?
There is not even a winning move in the game... there is only a losing move (and the other guy wins by default)
The winning move is the move that forces the other to lose?
(without reading the question)
To lose eventually or to lose on the next turn?

2 hours later…
20:57
@Rusher On the next turn imo
@TimWolla So for a 3 by 3 puzzle, there is a move that I can make that will make you lose the very next turn?
That's impossible...
Nope
Consider this:
XXX
XXX
XXX
->
XXX
X
X
If the other takes two pieces, you take the remaining two
if the other takes one piece you take one piece of the other side
And then you'll surely win.
21:23
@TimWolla But you didn't lose ON THE NEXT TURN
So that means the answer just has to be any move that eventually leads to a win
Yeah, sorry.
I'm about to select an answer for this, but the top two answers are tied. perhaps this can be rectified...
Chose the one you like better.
I kind of want community input
Someone somewhere stated that he likes to pick the person with fewer rep.
21:34
ok, chose the person with: fewer rep, favorite language (python), hadn't been upvoted by me, more readable not jsf***, etc
21:55
Here's an idea - don't vote until you go to choose an answer.
Then, if there is a tie, you can break it
Hrm... i usually upvote the first few answers to my questions, a kind of speed bonuz
@TheDoctor Thereby giving a disadvantage to people who don't see the question until later (sleeping, etc.)?
I hadn't seen that question, and I just voted on the one I liked better. It happened to be the one you accepted too
in Sandbox, 24 mins ago, by TheDoctor
how do i unfreeze a room?
@TheDoctor Get a mod to do it
21:59
I just had a terrible idea for a type of challenge. First to answer correctly.
@Rusher no no no no no no did I mention no?
2
:P
Even better, it completely breaks the sandbox
It is unsandboxable
We'll call it speed-golf
And to win you must furiously refresh the page waiting for new challenges
It should cost the questioner a 500 bounty to start one.
@Rusher poor F5 key
AutoIt has you covered
22:03
...or just look for the "1 new question" banner
no refresh needed
But then your fingers will be cold
This is speeeeeeeeeeeeeeed-golf
speF5F5F5F5F5eeeeF5F5F5F5d-golf
@TheDoctor you forgot a 5. :P
>F5
Oh goddamnit markdown leave me alone
22:11
@mniip Until you trigger the rate limiter :)
wget -qO- codegolf.stackexchange.com/questions?sort=newest|grep -q 'speed-golf`&&yes $'\a'  # :)
while true; do curl http://codegolf.stackexchange.com/questions?sort=newest | grep speed-golf; done; yes yes | sh
or while true; do eject; eject -t; done
22:26
while true; do fdrawcmd cylinder=0; fdrawcmd cylinder=79; done
aplay /boot/vmlinu*
22:41
for a in $(ls /dev | grep sd); do sudo dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/$a; done
22:57
You are terrible. for in $(ls), do sudo, .________.
echo /dev/sd*|xargs -n1 -i dd if=/dev/zero of={}
Oh well. The straightforward for loop is 1 char shorter: for i in /dev/sd*;do dd if=/dev/zero of=$i;done
@TheDoctor besides you should think about making a backup if your hard drive makes audible noises
23:17
Are we golfing?
Not really but parsing ls output is a large no-no
You should check out my gist above

codegolf.com has a golfed webpage! codegolf.com
