@PeterTaylor I'm not extremely-well versed in the math, but wasn't Babbage's Difference Engine intended to aid in the publishing of function tables for purposes like Actuarial planning and ocean navigation? IIRC there was at least one publisher who introduced errors in the data for the purpose of copy-protection.
On a similar thread would be emulating the IBM 1620, a bcd computer which lacked arithmetic (nicknamed CADET, "can't add; doesn't even try"). ... But the other CPU challenges have not been golfs.
I want to throw in an option which doesn't take the nuke-approach but also doesn't require a new site:
Use the sandbox even if the OP posts it on the main site.
When we encounter a question which we think should and can be enhanced (with some effort) we may migrate the question to sandbox man...
I'd be interested in your comments. I don't know yet if it is feasable or should be done. But I feel that we have to discuss some solutions.
@PeterTaylor No, I'm not using any flags. I just tried using -client after reading about -server but that didn't make any noticeable difference. I'll have to remember for the next time I do one of these that I should start the programs once and keep feeding the programs through stdin.
@Howard I think your idea is better than what we currently have - it'll get the poor challenges off the main site and into rehab quickly and make the questions easier to find in the sandbox. But the sandboxes will still get large and unwieldy quite quickly.
