Q: CGAC2022 Day 7: Fen The Wicked

BubblerPart of Code Golf Advent Calendar 2022 event. See the linked meta post for details. Fen is a magician Elf. He can cast spells on an array of numbers to produce another number or array of numbers. One of his inventions is the Wick spell. He loves to use this spell because "once this spell is appl...

12:39 AM
Okay, got an almost working back-end

1:34 AM

1:51 AM
ok so supposedly it is supposed to be lyal

@Bubbler lgtm

i guess lyal is basically dead

@Bubbler i think u skipped a step for explaining base 5, at step 4 u said 21(5) but at step 5 u say 1111(5) even tho the sequence u show above has 1100 after 21?
(and also im dumb so i dont understand why it cant have 2 or 3 digit at step 5 in the first place lol)
@Steffan ok what lang?
errrr did we do prolog yet?

yes

2:07 AM
@Steffan ye i think the last one was fig

ok ummm what about labyrinth??

we did that

which lyal is this anyways? 30th?
im pretty sure we didnt do trianguish yet right

@Bubbler Huh? someone downvoted this without comments

@Bubbler riiip

2:10 AM
@AidenChow Fixed, thanks
@AidenChow because the next number would have a leading zero

ah ok duh
ok r we just not doing lyal anymore

I'm not especially excited about any of the top-voted nominations, unfortunately

ok what about any of the nominations
also damn there hasnt been a new nomination since august, lyal is actually dying

that's not necessarily a bad thing

A: Biweekly Mini Golf is Half Dead

caird coinheringaahingLet it die BMG was first started over a year ago, was popular, had a bit of a slump after a couple of months, and, over the last 10 months has slowly died. And, that's okay. If people aren't engaging with an event anymore, the proper thing to do is let it die. It was fun when it started, and that...

That's exactly what I meant to refer to :p

damn never heard of biweekly mini golf before
also ye that makes sense
but like what should our next chat event be lol

One of the main reasons behind chat events when we first started them was to encourage participation in chat, and to break up the "monotony" of chat by doing something fun. But, if people no longer want to do them, or if they feel like chores, there should be no pressure to continuing them

sad, i like chat events

that's not to say you (or others) can't come up with new event ideas
there's no rigid/strict process for starting new events

2:30 AM
The only thing is that we mods/ROs have to "approve" them, and add them to the schedule

it's just a) come up with idea (the hardest part), b) post idea on meta, c) people vote on idea say "i think i'd like that, yes let's do that" and d) get ninja'd by caird

E.g. nothing inappropriate, but so long as there's support for an idea and it's relevant to the site, we're not gonna say no
@lyxal See, I remember 4 years ago, when I was the one always being ninja'd by people. It's nice to see that I'm now the ninja :P

so that's why there's been a few extra ninja stars in the fridge nukes lately
good to know
I was getting concerned that someone was interfering with the nukes, but if it's just you, then that's fine
just a regular day that ends in y

yep, just a normal conversation about ninjas and nukes, nothing to see here
3

@lyxal Oh yeah, we're doing some fridge nuke testing next week, in case you wonder what those explosion noises are :P
I suggested doing it over Christmas, but hyper said that'd be too mean to you :P

2:36 AM
does that mean I'll have a bit of time to start refilling the treasury to save for new fridges? Because I tell you what, you code golf mods are making me go through my limb stealing profits rather quickly.

@lyxal yea definitely the hardest part, i dont think im creative enough to think of a good chat event idea anyways lol

if someone without knowledge of chat culture reads this...

@cairdcoinheringaahing Like ffs, give a guy some time to get financially sound and repay back some of the whitegoods loans he's taken out

@Seggan im still not entirely sure what they are talking about lmfao

@Seggan Oh trust me, it used to be way worse
May 17, 2021 at 20:46, by Redwolf Programs
Imagine Lyxal wakes up in the middle of the night and there's some random moderator rigging a nuclear warhead under their fridge
May 17, 2021 at 22:59, by lyxal
Anyone know why my fridge is completely destroyed and people in my local area are now experiencing radiation poisoning?

2:38 AM
@AidenChow lyxal's limb stealing business is use to fund fridge nukes, why shouldnt you understand it?

no no it's used to fund the new fridges I have to buy each time

ah

Larry (my fridge dealer) used to think it was funny, but I feel he's getting a bit tired of my frequent visits
I mean, sure, I'm his best paying customer, but that's a lot of stock to keep having to refill

man i feel like i dont understand 99% of tnb culture, wtf am i reading lol

@AidenChow In summary: lyxal realised that the ping sound for chat is similar to him getting a thing of milk out his fridge. we then joked about hyper nuking lyxal's fridge to prevent the ping noises. lyxal joined in. it is now a running joke that us mods can nuke lyxal's fridge whenever we want, and that lyxal runs a limb stealing business to afford the new fridges
The limb stealing thing is a whole different joke :P

2:41 AM
basically, it's trying to say the most absurd stuff in the most deadpan way to get stars :p

I think the limb stealing started with a typo for a wave (i.e o/)

something like that, yeah

ok what, u guys spin some wild backstory off of the most random things
thats actually crazy

A: Sandbox for Proposed Challenges

AlephSquirrelRolling a 1x1x2 block This challenge is inspired by the game Bloxorz. Like that game, there is a 1x1x2 block, which may be moved about a square grid in any of the four cardinal directions. It moves by rotating 90 degrees about one of its edges which is touching the ground. Initially, the block is...

Good news! The userscript is finished

2:48 AM
@AidenChow I've been here for almost 6 years, a lot has happened since I joined :P

@lyxal ok wait that actually kinda sounds like the ping noise

that's right
radvylf made a userscript once that replaces the chat ping noise with the fridge noise

I'm still sad that lyxal washing Aaron got deleted :(

And AAAAAAAAAAAaAAAAaaaAAaAAA

2:55 AM
@cairdcoinheringaahing you're not sad, you're caird :p

Sep 27 at 0:34, by caird coinheringaahing
@lyxal This is comparable to the burning of the Library of Alexandria
@AidenChow If you want more random TNB jokes, se-nitro.surge.sh

@emanresuA Thank you for quoting me at me :P
5

@hyper-neutrino ^^^^

Oops lol

2:57 AM
@emanresuA da hell is se nitro
is that a real thing

Long story

@AidenChow Only if you believe

It's every in-joke from the past two years

wtfffffff who drew those

I did :p

2:59 AM
Sadly,it's unfinished
Did someone named no one install the typing userscript?

I guess so

'no one' is lyxal

@emanresuA its unfinished??? theres so many pages tho

Who seems to have already figured out how to spoof usernames

3:00 AM
lol ye

Was going to do an fkey-based authentication mechanism, but I didn't want to be sending private data to my own server

@RadvylfPrograms it's surprisingly easy

Yeah, since it's pretty harmless I just left it as a "please don't touch" instead of doing some sort of sanity check :p

@emanresuA Completely inaccurate, I didn't steal WW's diamond
I stole Doorknob's

well frick

3:06 AM
Radvylf, why use innerHTML and sanitise instead of using innerText?

I uh maybe have broken the userscript

@emanresuA Because if their username is missing, I put user[id] in italics
It could happen in some rare situation where a message gets skipped (not entirely sure TLS/WS allows that, but wanted to handle it gracefully anyway)

Challenge: Figure out what I tried to XSS with (did it even work?)

Replacing all of our PFPs with lyxal's

@RadvylfPrograms what the, this allows u to see whos typing? even ppl who dont have the script?

3:08 AM
@RadvylfPrograms yep lol

@AidenChow No, only people with the script

Ha ha, I'm typing and you can't even see it

@RadvylfPrograms Please not this again

@cairdcoinheringaahing Oh no, it'd only have been client side, even if it had worked
it was just a script tag that would, if I had forgotten to sanitize the HTML, have changed every .avatar img on chat to lyxal's pfp

@emanresuA what is xss anyways?

3:11 AM
Cross-site scripting

Cross site scripting
ninja'd

Injecting HTML/JS into another site
E.g., if you change the innerHTML of a box to someone's username
They could then make their username a script tag, allowing them to inject lyxal's pfp into your website

lets gooo the script works
wait whos joe mama

Lyxal being lyxal

believe or not, I'm not Joe Mama
I'm trying out something quite different to funny names

3:12 AM
wtf is going on with the script lmao, u guys see someone named joe mama??

ye

huh thats actually hilarious

Okay, please stop with the spoofed names. Yes, it is possible. No, it is no longer creative.

@RadvylfPrograms Relevant Ozy and Millie

@RadvylfPrograms what if not spoofed, but just a little accented?

3:16 AM
Slightly modified is fine if you really want to. Zalgo and similar is not.

okie doke

@lyxal what are you trying anyways

Ayy broadcast works

@AidenChow just trying to see what happens when sending multiple websocket requests at once
probably didn't work

What does sync do btw?

3:18 AM
is the cursive showing up for y'all?

It is for me

good
I'm leaving it as that

@user Synchronizes time across clients

I can't see it lol
Ah ok

just making sure it works

3:20 AM
Okay you don't need to packet spam my server lyxal
It works
Whoever is using the name user and ID 123. Stop. Please.

that ain't me

Crap, that's me
I was trying to spoof my username
Let me stop it

How...did you mess it up that bad lol

I may or may not have confused setInterval with setTimeout

You know you can just change user_name to some other string right :p

3:25 AM
I just wanted it to send "joe mama is typing" once
Okay but imagine how powerful I could be if I could just go into the console and be like send("joe") :P

It would be cool if there was like, a standardized chat modding API userscript. It's an idea I had a while back but never really worked on
It would let people build a ton of chat userscripts that built on one another, so that you could have things like emotes, reactions, typing indicators, etc. all available in one convenient "app store" sorta thing, which would all be able to work with one another

4:15 AM
"Programming language with coffee cup logo" now what is that

11 letters
I'm filling a crossword
Oh wait it's 4 letters I'm so dumb
sorry my bad but thx for the answer anyway

3 hours later…
7:09 AM
@Bubbler if you use li(x)-(1/2) lii (sqrt(x)) it looks more accurate for all the cases I could test up to 10^12?

@graffe I mean, if you want some real mathematical results better than Wikipedia's, you'd better post it on mathoverflow, not here

7:25 AM
@RadvylfPrograms ooh, very nice - thanks!

7:39 AM
@UndoneStudios Java-script

7:56 AM
@JoKing nvm I got the answer already

8:09 AM
Is generating a crossword from a given list of words to maximize overlap NP complete?

12:35 PM
hi

howdy

@AidenChow it's not just you q:
@AidenChow yeah the tnb lore goes miles deep and is also recursive for some reason
@RadvylfPrograms when will you finish it
@RadvylfPrograms don't give me any ideas

if mods can nuke someone's fridge what more can they do?

Nuke someone's microwave

12:51 PM
I don't own one so I'm safe
but lyxal is only a uni student I doubt they could even steal a limb

How do you think medical students practice?

@UndoneStudios it's a front for my side business, duh
No one suspects the uni student

@mousetail he's a university student, not a medical one

They are not that different, bot steal organs
It's very common for students of all diciplines to steal eachother body parts
After my first year at uni I had just 1 arm left, but I got better now I have 5

@mousetail nods head in agreement it's true - where else do you think I got my seed money?

1:00 PM
@mousetail if that's true, I'd have been dead already

You can live with just one kidney
and one arm

> bot steal organs
imagine we created a bot doing that

Plot of every horror film

@mousetail no everyone will tear off everything of me

We're careful when stealing organs

1:02 PM
you stole some too?
take a pic of... oh never mind

Yes, like literally every college student
Like I said I now own 5 arms

I don't like limb stealing
it sounds too bad
to take
on
all by
myself

You get used to it

don't any
of you think?

My liver got stolen on my first day

1:04 PM
meaning you're a zombie

It sucked at first but then I learned how to steal a new one
You can survive a few days without a liver

liver = life, !(liver) = death

@UndoneStudios but it's hella profitable

You can't digest food without a liver though so I wouldn't recomend

@mousetail exactly what I meant
to say
my enter does not work properly
due to some kids at school

1:06 PM
I have 3 livers now, I can drink unlimited alcohol

does that mean most of my messages
will go to TN 🍞?
@mousetail don't tell me you're drunk?

I'm not, my 3 livers digest the alcohol way too quickly for me to get drunk anymore

@mousetail so you also took a course in surgery
kinda strange
so y'all are medical students pretending to be code golfers?

I kinda figured it out as I went along, trial and error

@mousetail me too

1:10 PM
@UndoneStudios bold of you to assume I haven't already

2 hours later…
3:36 PM
@UndoneStudios unnecessary parentheses

the air pressure in the room I'm in is... weird
one of my ears is stuffed but the other feels fine

4:06 PM
why do i feel like thats me :P

I think it's lyxal but it can't be, lyxal is missing at that point
not sure if you were around when that comic was made :b

@Ginger ye

4:19 PM
Have y'all considered like... starting with a clean sandbox every year or something?

CMC given two 100 digit numbers x,y output the closest integer less than or equal to x/y

@graffe if im reading correctly isnt that just floor(x/y)

@AidenChow yes but your language doesn't support ints that big
Sorry I mean floats that big

@Ginger yep i was around

I.e. python supports ints that big but will lose precision with floats

4:27 PM
my acc is over a year old

@Ginger when was that even made lol

@graffe Isn't that just int division?

@RadvylfPrograms int division but with 100 digits apparently
and x and y can be floats apparently

@AidenChow last comic was jan 26 of this year

@Seggan hmmm i think i started becoming active in code golf around that time

4:30 PM
@AidenChow does that make sense?

last repo commit was feb 3

@RadvylfPrograms yes

I'm thinking about rereading the comics and writing part (4?) of SE Nitro
I have some plans

@RadvylfPrograms is that really simple large ints?

@RadvylfPrograms :D
please do

4:30 PM
@graffe As in, writing it from scratch?

@RadvylfPrograms YES
and include me

Okay okay okay. I think I remember what the plot was going to be.

ooh you should add the steggan hivemind :P

^

I'll have a part finished tonight.

4:31 PM
@RadvylfPrograms yes exactly

@hyper-neutrino can you unfreeze chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/133489?

the characters venture out of tnb, meet the evil sʨɠɠan hivemind, ???, profit

the current plot is a bit screwy, imo the comic needs a new arc

@graffe Just implement long division. Represent the int using whatever base you want (typically 256), then use the grade-school long division algorithm. It's probably not the most efficient, but it's definitely good enough for a few hundred thousand digits or so.

wait whos john skeet

4:33 PM
Highest rep user on SO

ah

@RadvylfPrograms that was the CMC :)

Well all the languages I use have bigints built-in :p

@RadvylfPrograms hmmm :)

@RadvylfPrograms So you don't use brainf?

4:40 PM
Brainfuck has bigints in most implementations :p

good point

@RadvylfPrograms it's possible x//y works in python. I am no my phone so did you please test that for me
@RadvylfPrograms it's possible x//y works in python. I am on my phone so did you please test that for me

Yes, Python has bigints and integer division

@RadvylfPrograms it's possible x//y works in python. I am on my phone so could you please test that for me

Python 2 has long for bigints, and Python 3's only int type is bigints
Okay so I've just realized Part 3 of SE Nitro is unfinished
There's only a single chapter
IIRC Part 3 was actually the last part

4:43 PM
well we need more

Okay it's four parts apparently

... wait
no way

@Ginger Enjoy the warmth

@cairdcoinheringaahing send hot coffee is cold here :P

@ThomasWard Smokey doesn't hang out in here unfortunately :(

4:51 PM
no but I do ;)
takes $10 out of @cairdcoinheringaahing 's wallet, and heads to the coffee shop

._.

That's some expensive coffee :P

@cairdcoinheringaahing it's 3 lattes :P

@ThomasWard Good, with how unruly this rabble are, we need all the diamonds we can get around here :P
@ThomasWard More of an iced coffee girl myself :P

Fun fact: There are already 24 characters (not including bystanders and hyper's mom) in SE Nitro

4:53 PM
wait theres hypers mom

Yeah she works at the Canadian CIA

@cairdcoinheringaahing 'tis also fun to just lurk here too it's a nice community
this channel IS on my favorites list :)
and as for diamonds being here well
points up at the orbital diamond platforms diamond strikes are always ready >:D

@RadvylfPrograms we need orbital diamond strikes in SE nitro now :P

@cairdcoinheringaahing i mean i would
but it's cold as heck here right now
so i mean
consumes all the hot coffee and caffeine

5:08 PM
@ThomasWard I drink iced coffee when there's snow on the ground :P

@cairdcoinheringaahing i mean so do i
but the reason i'm not today is
because renovations in this building required them shutting off the gas lines today
so no heat
therefore, really really cold

@Catija We actually used to, but slightly more regularly, but eventually decided on sticking with 1
In fact, looks like our current sandbox is the 15th Sandbox

Maybe we should start a new sandbox for 2023 :p

I was just thinking... it's got to be hard to find the recent answers, though I guess y'all just sort by modified date here instead of votes?

5:17 PM
yeah

@Catija even with normal posts i always keep it on modified

@Catija I sort by modified by default on main and meta, so yep. Plus, there's a link in the question body to a search for your own posts if it's been a while since you edited it

@RadvylfPrograms lets do that

Any feedback beyond the feedback already in the comments?

5:48 PM
@lyxal BQN, 5 bytes: @+2×↕

5:59 PM
@Catija This entire site only works if you sort by modified

@cairdcoinheringaahing 1) Do double conveyor belts chain indefinitely? I.e. if there's a sequence >> >> >> >> C1 and my robot lands on the leftmost one, does it get sent all the way to C1?
2) I assume if you try to move to PA you just stay where you were previously? And if another bot tries to push you into PA, both bots stay where they were?
3) Can bots move onto *v when they're not being rebooted?
4) "score: a boolean, indicating whether you have landed on Checkpoint 1 yet." Should probably make explicit that True means you have already landed on Checkpoint 1 (this is mentioned in passing later on)
Overall impression: It looks very complex; I'm not sure how many submissions you're going to get (what happens if there are fewer than six, BTW?). But I am now interested in playing the board game!

Q: ><> numbers metagolf

mousetailI struggle to easily encode big numbers in ><>. If only there was a program that could find the best way for me? What is ><> ><>, pronounced "fish", is a esoteric 2dimentional programing language. We will consider a subset here, consisting of the following commands: 0123456789 push one number to...

6:24 PM
@DLosc 1) Double conveyers simply move you two spaces along the direction at the end of the register. So if your robot's instruction in one register ended it on the leftmost one, it'd be moved 2 to the right (to the 3rd from left), then the next register would activate. If the instruction in that register left them in the same place (e.g. a turn), then at the end of the register, the robot would be moved onto C1
2) Yep, exactly.
3) Yes, and it acts like an empty space in that case. If a robot is rebooted, they shunt the robot on *v South.
4) Good point, will do. I'll edit the Sandbox post soon with the clarifications
@DLosc Then I'll either throw in an example bot or 2, or just run it with the bots submitted. The game works with 2 or more players. The actual board game is very fun. It comes with 6 different boards (2 sided) that you can combine into massive factories, with up to 6 checkpoints. Additionally, it has upgrades you can give your robot, additional "damage" cards like Spam but much worse, and multiple other board elements, like lasers, gears, shunts and pits
I think you can also change the location of the Priority Antenna, but I've never actually done that :P

6:41 PM
@mousetail Score forever!!!

if you like score so much why don't you solve the popcon problem for us

If SE could solve the popcon problem for us, and hadn't, I think we leave the platform :P

7:07 PM
LDQ Infinitely recursive flatten or single level flatten, or N depth flatten with parameter N. I would like to have just 2 of 3.
I have a builtin for infinity already

Vyxal overloads 2 and 3 into the same builtin.

For parsing I need everything to have a fixed arity

7:26 PM
Is the popcorn problem the fact that we're always out because my kids like eating it so much?
I'm going to have to figure out how to forget about my draft for a week so I can ask it during WB. The Chat GPT stuff isn't distracting enough.

7:37 PM
@Catija Popcon = : a challenge type where the scoring criterion, instead of or , is simply "Which answer gets the highest score?" It's been controversial for years because it attracts a lot of poorly conceived challenges and it's hard to argue that "most popular" is an objective winning criterion, but at the same time there have been several really good popcon challenges, so we don't want to completely get rid of it.

8:10 PM
@emanresuA ffs vyxal even got builtins for numbers :p

And?

yeah that too

8:26 PM
@Ginger So does Pip (but not 2 or 3) ;P
@mousetail Do you have an easy way to "do N times"?
Actually, even if you don't, I'd say flatten once is more useful. I don't remember the last time I needed to flatten less than all but more than twice.

8:46 PM
Maybe "flatten all but one time"
But that requires your "flatten N times" built-in to work with negative numbers
And it's easy to forget to implement that meaningfully

8:58 PM
@DLosc Not super easy, you could do range reduce but it would cost at least 4 bytes
Maybe I should add a builtin for that too

@DLosc Ah, thanks! :D I feel like that would be useful for the more artistic-style languages. :)

Some of my favorite challenges on this site have been popularity contests. I understand why "Make something awesome" is too vague/subjective for SE--but the results were awesome!
