@RedwolfPrograms 11ing that message will break context and it does not leak PII so if you want you/another RO can trash the thread but it's not much clutter (unless you want me to yeet it for other reasons such as embarassment for getting it wrong)
actually on second thought there isn't much legitimate reason for me to decline a voluntary self-11 request as a mod, lol

12:27 AM
Or you could use your eleven powers to fix it

Do I have to input numbers themselves or still add /0 in it, because I'm planning to use a string if so?

> Note that input will be in the form of n/0 where n is any rational number or any b-number in decimal form.
So the input will always be a string n/0, and n is either a rational number, or a "b-number"

for that challenge, why does -b/0 go to -b? since you could factor out b to get -b * 1/0 = -(b^2)

Okay. String it is.

12:38 AM
actually, it might be because b^n = b

@Underslash honestly, I don't really remember why.

hmm
would solutions to that be considered correct if you had b^2 instead of b?

Q: Are questions asking for factoids about the site on topic for meta? For example

yes

1:00 AM
Sandbox posts last active a week ago: Create a non-renewable world, Verify the Perfect Rectangle

Seems like I can't ask on Stack Overflow for 5 more days.
I need help with debugging.
Any input I give will always end up in a segmentation fault.

That second sandbox post is a pretty good challenge imo

Got a couple of dupes of this: Number 1, Number 2

1:22 AM
@Underslash I figured out what your profile pic is
@lyxal Very sus

Bubbler is the only user to exceed 100 upvotes by asking questions in the last 30 days, and has a significant margin (46 upvotes) over #2

I'm #4 in answerers and #6 in questioners.

Hey, we both add to #10 overall (#8 and #2 here) :P

I also have the most answers in last 30 days tho (88) :P

1:43 AM
And I'm the only answerer on the list with fewer than 10 answers :P
Also I'm reworking the Rust-based TIO (Try it Offline?) thing, so the entire UI logic is also moved into Rust. I guess I can share the product when I'm done with the language selection thing
After that, it's just a matter of adding more languages by implementing in Rust

Deadfish?

I'm considering Deadfish for one of the test-drive languages, yes

Anyone who's interested, there should be a few tasks in the Meta Close Votes review queue that could do with some dupe closing
Alternatively, direct links: #1, #2, #3, #4

Currently the only language there is S10K, which prints 10,000 copies of 'S' regardless of code and input :/

@Bubbler And I thought Deadfish was esoteric...

1:57 AM
@Bubbler What was the rationale behind that language?

@Bubbler This is clearly the most useful programming language
3

If Pyth is from Python, where did Jelly come from?

@StackOverflow Jelly is inspired by J

Okay.
I'm trying to figure out why this code will always give a segmentation fault.

@cairdcoinheringaahing I'd say they are, but I haven't been here (on SE) very long ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

@StackOverflow Gelatin

There is lightning here, might have to ask about it on lightning.SE :p

@user No, Jelly inspired Gelatin

I didn't try running it on TIO, but I did run it on a sandbox site.

@user Rationale: I needed a "language" to quickly check the UI is working as intended

2:01 AM
@cairdcoinheringaahing Forgot about that

@StackOverflow you're not reading to t; is this intentional?

DeafPig is the best language

@Bubbler That makes a lot more sense

@hyper-neutrino I meant 11 as in use your mod edit powers to fix it lol

@Ausername Pigs are the best animal

2:02 AM
@RedwolfPrograms oops. well VTC as unclear then :P

@RedwolfPrograms Mod abuse

@RedwolfPrograms *tries to have it fixed* *accidentally has it nuked*

@hyper-neutrino Is there an un-11 button, I don't feel like redoing that lol

there is not

2:03 AM
I have a collection of nuclear weapons, but I am not a necromancer.

Mod abuse!1!!1
Burn the trigger-happy mod

HN isn't quite a nuclearmancer yet

!!!!1!11!!11!!1!!

@hyper-neutrino Yes. t won't take input, but rather will be used to store another string so I don't have to bother s too much, and so I can actually print out [s]b but doing what I know of.

@hyper-neutrino I believe you can see the history, and give that to Redwolf

2:04 AM
@StackOverflow wait then how are you doing calculation if you aren't reading both inputs lol

fortunately i did not completely demolish it :p

In fact, as an RO, Redwolf can see the history of deleted messages so you could just link to it

Wait I can?

Some triple dashes are positioned wrong still

Oh it's also my message lol
I can just click the normal history link

Oh wait, I can do that for any message

2:06 AM
yeah, cuz RO things, apparently. lol

In recent news, local citizen elected president but "wasn't aware he can do things with that"

I was never aware that ROs could see deleted message history either until caird discovered it that one day

In a press release, he clarified that "he just liked the white house"

A pet peeve of mine: I like listening to EDM music. Most EDM mixes on youtube have borderline-NSFW video backgrounds (think girls in revealing lingerie, or this which I'm listening to now). I dislike this, and it feels uncomfortable to have these images up while listening to music I like
I never understand why video creators do this tbh. Makes literally everyone watching it either feel like a perv, or an actual perv

@cairdcoinheringaahing bruh. yeah it does not make any sense lol. like idk why people can't just be normal with backgrounds and put like lyrics or that frequency graph circle thingy or whatever
also like half of the top comments are talking about the woman and not the music itself which is even more disturbing/discomforting

Luckily I don;t have to explain this shit to my parents if/when they walk in and see this (I'm out to them, and have ranted about this lol) but still
@hyper-neutrino Yeah, that's even worse tbh

I guess it sort of offers an explanation for why creators might do this though? :/ as bad as that sounds, it might very well be true
I guess it's a fitting time for this (now apparently recurring) cmq:
CMQ - music recommendations

Boosts engagement if 50k edgy 13 year olds are commenting

2:14 AM
@hyper-neutrino my latest one is ロキ covered by calliope mori

@hyper-neutrino If you're fine with the backgrounds, Infinity EDM is usually a good place to go for EDM

@hyper-neutrino C418 has a YT account if you like listening to Minecraft music :p

Plus a spotify playlist :p

C418 music is very good :p +1

@cairdcoinheringaahing Because people falsely (?) believe that sexualisation helps grab people’s attention

2:15 AM
The end music after the dragon fight is so awesome

@hyper-neutrino Rick Astley

The one with "glitchy" versions of all of the other music in the game
Not alpha

No, it's an end track

2:16 AM
@RedwolfPrograms Yes

The one for the outer islands

heh. disc 11 should be the CGCC theme song (joke being mod abuse 11)

Looks like it's called The End
Actually it might not be, can't find it

@hyper-neutrino I stopped listening to the NSFW EDM and put my playlist on shuffle for you: Fly Away (TheFatRat), Sine U Been Gone (Kelly Clarkson) , Enola Gay :P

2:19 AM
I swear volume beta used to be on C418's YT
Found it

@cairdcoinheringaahing ooh thefatrat is good :p also do you mean "since" or...?

@hyper-neutrino No, Kelly Clarkson learns math :P (Nah, I meant since)

lol
@RedwolfPrograms huh, idk if i've actually ever heard that before

It's one of my favorites
When I was a lot younger I played on my parents' old laptop (20 fps gang), and whenever that played I thought the speakers were broken :p
The atmosphere in the end islands is 100% my favorite part of 1.9
Probably the best thing added between 1.8 (when I started playing) and 1.12

2:22 AM
I like the fact that they added interesting stuff to the end
Before, the game kinda, well, ended at the dragon, now its so much more

Despite adding a single structure, ten or so blocks, and the simplest possible terrain generation, the outer islands manage to feel like they have so much history and depth

Call anything a "city" in a game, and suddenly you have lore :P

And I really liked 1.16 because the added lore in the nether fit really well with the existing music there, and they even added on to that in a fitting way

I must admit, I usually have music off when I play Minecraft.

You must admin :p
You have no choice

2:26 AM
shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh you saw nothing

I used to turn off the music, but it adds so much to the game

@hyper-neutrino Music that just comforts you. Or helps you concentrate.
Sadly, my music taste is bad.

I'm not going to bring up 1.17 because my opinions on that are quite controversial (and even discussing it disappoints me) :p

The actual 1.17 or the original planned 1.17?

2:27 AM
well I meant like specifically things you listen to :p like not even recommendations for me (cuz nobody here really knows my music taste, includnig myself)

@RedwolfPrograms I play on Bedrock, so I still don't have 1.17 on my device.

It hasn't come out yet, right?
I thought it was still in pre-releases

@RedwolfPrograms I usually listen to my own music lol. Also most of MC music makes me feel lonely so I replace it with my own or nothing

That's part of the game :p

@RedwolfPrograms Yes, it's a beta, which is why I'm not downloading it yet.

2:28 AM
latest release is 1.16.5

@RedwolfPrograms Not to drag you unwilling into a conversation, but personally I'm a fan of expanding the world limits and redoing terrain/cave generation
@RedwolfPrograms Pre-release 3 came out today

So am I, I love the idea of a cave update
I just think they handled it horribly

I'm really proud of making a hidden crafting table in minecraft
Except the redstone is approximately 20x20

latest snapshot is 1.17-pre4

2:29 AM
Everyone wanted new tools, I suppose?

@cairdcoinheringaahing 4
3 was out yesterday

To me 1.12 to 1.16 were a sort of golden age of updates, but 1.17 doesn't do the things that made those ones so great imo

@hyper-neutrino Off by one errors are the two biggest programming issues
8

@hyper-neutrino Nice.
But I don't play Java.
@RedwolfPrograms Yeah, 1.12 was a great update. A bunch of blocks and colors we can use to make ridiculous builds.

TBH I don't even really know half of what happened after 1.8. I played primarily in 1.8 for quite a while since Hypixel has never stopped supporting 1.8 (by which I mean operating in 1.8's combat mechanics) and the port from 1.9+ to 1.8 is a bit glitchy so I just stay in 1.8 itself.

2:30 AM
Like in 1.14, they hardly added any new blocks (aside from the slabs/stairs/walls). If they could get away with reusing, for example, brewing stands or terracotta, they did. The ones they added increased the possibilities for building massively.

@RedwolfPrograms I'd be interested to pick your brain on this - I don't really like 1.15/1.16 and think that 1.17 (original) was a great one

I say ridiculous, because all houses or buildings I make are always cube-shaped.

In 1.17, they added all sorts of blocks that are redundant or unnecessary
The whole atmosphere of the caves feels artificial

Copper and all its variants are a bit useless tbh

@RedwolfPrograms Indeed. But what's the point of copper and amethyst?

2:31 AM
I got used to some of the newer things from playing v 1.14 (I think? I can't even remember anymore) with my girlfriend at the time, and whatever version Redwolf SMP was on, but I definitely don't remember like anything from 1.16 onward
amethyst apparently makes cool sounds

Minecraft structures have an aesthetic I personally love, because they use the limited block palette creatively. When you add new blocks for everything, it just feels fake.

If they'd kept it to changing the generation only, I'd be 100% happy. The rest was kind of like an add-on that I'd ignore

@hyper-neutrino Rickroll? I saw that one.

@hyper-neutrino The combat update was great (1.9 IIRC)

We have vines. We have lily pads. We have mossy cobble. We have clay. We have diorite.

2:33 AM
@cairdcoinheringaahing Yeah, but Bedrock is mostly unaffected.

Granite, diorite and andesite can go die

@RedwolfPrograms that's a good point. it feels like minecraft is starting to pack excessive amounts of new things for the sake of just having new things which sort of takes away from the minecraft feel of it. now i sound like a boomer. "back in my day, we didn't have these fancy new blocks"

We don't need vines-but-a-bit-uglier or lily-pads-but-a-bit-uglier or mossy-cobble-but-a-bit-uglier
Amethyst and copper are totally useless

@cairdcoinheringaahing (yes 1.9) I am still conflicted on it. It feels more skill-based in PVP, but I am still convinced the main impact was on PVE and I think it made PVE feel a lot nicer.

Tinted glass is an amazing idea, but why amethyst? It doesn't even make sense from a casual glance.
Use coal or dye or something.

2:33 AM
but I am used to just spamming CPM to win

@RedwolfPrograms We could've gotten drills or other mining tools.

CMC: click speed test; highest score wins

Not only did they add useless items, they added more useless items to pretend to give them a use

fletching tables :P

When people said they wanted a cave update, they meant better generation, taller underground, better cave structures, improvements on existing features like minecarts, etc.

2:34 AM
Fletching tables are great

We got none of that
^^

my mouse is slightly damaged in a way that causes left clicking to sometimes register twice in rapid succession

I love the new villager trading

it's on

2:35 AM
Useless, but nice.

I think 1.14 is the perfect balance between new features and reusing old ones

got 38 :/

3 mins ago, by caird coinheringaahing
If they'd kept it to changing the generation only, I'd be 100% happy. The rest was kind of like an add-on that I'd ignore

@RedwolfPrograms Pillagers are cool, and villages are more useful.

1.16 is pretty close. They didn't have much to work with in the nether-y palette, but it was still good imo

2:35 AM
@UnrelatedString lol I got 58
butterfly clicking tho, idk if that's considered cheating :P

1.17 just feels like they took the community's desires and twisted them around into the lowest effort product

@hyper-neutrino I'd call it cheating if you auto'd instead.

The new cave generation isn't even that good imo

i mean i feel like the website encourages you to click skillfully

This would be a good candidate for , as I've found a few meta posts like this on the "search" through FRs/bugs
What are your thoughts on FAQing that?

2:37 AM
I can get 48 by spamming one finger and using the other hand to hold my mouse in place, but if i just properly hold my mouse and click with one finger like a normal person would, I get only 40, lol

@RedwolfPrograms Now I'm agreeing that 1.17 is a bit bad.

I strongly dislike the deepslate, too. I think using blackstone would've been cooler, although I don't know how necessary that is in the first place

We currently don't have anything in the FAQ about questions, which feels off (aside from this)

i wonder if my ring finger would be faster

2:38 AM
The mountains will be cool, but I wish they'd integrate with the biomes a bit more

shall we move this to the CGCC game related room? nothing important is happening here anyway so I'd be fine to just keep it here, but this conversation has gone on for a long time and it is totally off-topic :P

5 mins ago, by Stack Overflow
@cairdcoinheringaahing Yeah, but Bedrock is mostly unaffected.

@hyper-neutrino Idk, we've had worse

true :p

1.9 didn't seem like a big thing that occured in Bedrock.

2:38 AM
I feel like this conversation would die in CGCC gaming

If anything more on-topic comes up we can always stop

also true. I guess we just stick to the "Please pause an off-topic conversation or continue it in a different room created for the conversation if there is an on-topic conversation going on." chatiquette guideline :P and there's nothing on-topic

I think upgrading rails and minecarts would have been amazing

if i could right click in the box i feel like i'd definitely be able to at least hit 40 considering i play league of legends without binding attack move

2:39 AM
@hyper-neutrino Actually, I might move the messages from that chat room over tbh. Sorry about inviting you there :/

It's a bit too late now, but I've always wanted them to remove the powered rails
The idea of furnace minecarts is cool
Maybe add golden rails, which have the stopping effect, but not the speeding one

3 mins ago, by caird coinheringaahing
This would be a good candidate for , as I've found a few meta posts like this on the "search" through FRs/bugs

that kinda gets lost due to chronological ordering lol

Helpful, add them into the transcript :P

Making furnace minecarts autoload chunks would be insanely useful

2:41 AM
@cairdcoinheringaahing I agree with making it FAQ. I hadn't actually noticed there was a lack of things relating to tips, and I think it would be good to include a proper consensus as to what's acceptable since we do say "this site is for challenges" and then allow non-challenges.

@RedwolfPrograms Ye
(s)

It costs coal so it's not OP

If it isn't there, maybe adding a guide on tips to "how to ask" or one of our welcome posts would be good? IDK if we already have that though

Hey @Stephen, long time no see!

2:41 AM
but yes, I agree with making this FAQ

I agree as well

@StackOverflow you never initialize t

@StackOverflow i like to say i don't even have taste in music

same TBH, like I don't have anything against the idea of having a music taste, but I have such inconsistent taste / music I like / dislike that there's no point trying to categorize :P

@hyper-neutrino While you're doing that, mind adding to this?

2:42 AM
i definitely have some sort of taste in music
but it's always either not worth articulating or a terrible idea to express

I don't really have a taste in music either honestly, I just listen to songs I like sometimes :p

@cairdcoinheringaahing wait it wasn't already? lol just noticed. done, thanks
my taste in music is "music i like". that's about all i can say. :p

Same :p

May 12 at 14:50, by caird coinheringaahing
@hyper-neutrino I feel like I understand a theme in my music tastes, but I could not describe it at all
May 12 at 14:53, by caird coinheringaahing
@hyper-neutrino Idk about you, but I also have obvious and describable consistencies in subsets of my music (e.g. any pop/pop punk from 2009-2014 is 100% good for me :P), but put them all together and words fail me :P

2:44 AM
i feel like nobody has a "monolithic" taste in music

I'll listen to a song I like and think "oh, maybe I like this band/genre" and listen to another similar song and absolutely hate it

I'm not even convinced there's any category of music I'll 100% (or like 90%) like, but there are definitely genres that I'll pretty consistently enjoy (or at least not hate) so if I had to name tastes I probably could

@UnrelatedString My dad likes only music from 1980-1990 and 2005-2015. Nothing else, but everything in that period is good for him

2:45 AM
I like a lot of music from 2015 or so, but that's just because of nostalgia

@hyper-neutrino Maybe add first for a few days?
Just as a "double check"

you know what's really weird? music that makes me feel nostalgic despite having never heard it before

CMQ: How do you pronounce "faq" in your head?

@cairdcoinheringaahing I think that's a good plan. I'll go with that

eff-ay-queue

2:46 AM
@RedwolfPrograms Nope, what Unrelated said

both ways at the same time
...not that way

"fak" for me, but not like "fahk"

@RedwolfPrograms eff ay kyu

Like "yak" with an "f"

2:47 AM
@hyper-neutrino With that, I have now gone through all 150 of those posts :D

we don't actually have an faq-proposed tag right now :D just had to recreate it

Don't you mean eff-a-九?

I'd share my gist, but it's got half the info, and I want the flags :D

2:47 AM
@cairdcoinheringaahing oh damn, nice. thank you so much :D
@Ausername no that's 「きゅう」, i meant 「きゅ」 lol

@RedwolfPrograms Fak, nevermind.

@hyper-neutrino Is this yuno?

(or ここの)
@Ausername no this is just hiragana

Oh
I was using kanji

lol i noticed :p

2:49 AM
How much Japanese do you know?

the on'yomi reading for 九 is きゅう
similar to "jiu3" in mandarin (ofc)
@StackOverflow very little. i just started learning it a couple weeks ago or so

tone 3 in mandarin is the falling rising one right

yes
- / v \ (1-indexed)

I can read hiragana and some kanji, but never knew the meaning of them.

only tone nuimber i remember because i read something about sandhi two years ago

2:51 AM
ah
yeah sandhi is weird lol

@hyper-neutrino Probably tomorrow, I'll start raising all of the flags per tag at once. Feel free to let the other mods know that I do not expect them to handle them all at once, and would prefer them to be spread out and be pending for a few days :)

@cairdcoinheringaahing i'd leave a message in our mod chat but i am torn between superpinging them for inaction and just not letting them know

¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Your call

I kind of want to attempt to learn a non-indo-european language, I don't particularly need to know any of them but it'd be interesting to compare the difficulty

I just don't want meta to be flooded

2:52 AM
I think i'll just leave them; I trust the other mods to know not to flood meta with 20 edits at once, and if they think it's weird that you're raising so many flags, they'll probably ask me in chat or ask you here and one of us can explain :P
it'll prob be fine though, they'll probably just space it out too anyway
@RedwolfPrograms TBH one of the trickiest parts of learning an asian language IMO (cannot speak for other regions) is understanding the word order/grammar and how to actually use it, because you can't really translate between english all the time

like most things in french or german or w/e you could translate into an identical meaning in english and see which word goes where

but the sentence and phrase structure can itself be fundamentally different in a different family

Wait, I'll be back.

@StackOverflow you'll need to add a manual check for if s is just 1 with nothing but a / after it; this can't be solved online
@UnrelatedString yeah, exactly. like the other day i was going through some jp sentences and it's really hard to actually translate it into english
you can interpret it and then rewrite it

2:55 AM
Spanish and latin are the only two languages I've learned a bit of, for spanish at least you could probably drag and drop the translations of most words and it'd be comprehensible english :p
For latin not so much though

but a proper translation would sound awkward, and the same meaning is a totally different structure and frankly loses the important (hard) parts of the grammar itself

That's 7 pending flags for ya HN :P

like i think the sentence i was looking at was like 晩ご飯を食べなかった人は、映画で見た銀行に行った which you could translate into "the person who didn't eat dinner went to the bank they saw at the movies" but all of the words in each half are totally backwards and it's hard to line up the components lol
:P
@cairdcoinheringaahing thanks, i'll space them out somewhat reasonably :p
this is the highest the flag count has been on either main or meta in ages

Might try learning a tiny bit of chinese or japanese just for fun (probably not japanese though 'cause then I have to explain to people that I did not learn it because of anime :p)

3:00 AM
@hyper-neutrino As said, no rush :)

@hyper-neutrino You can get the general gist of it tho.

@hyper-neutrino There are at least 23 that weren't obviously under one specific tag (plus their duplicates), I think those would be good to have a mod + CM review of, maybe after a little pruning by you guys
Here's a link if you want to take a look/share it

@Ausername yeah, definitely. but for actually trying to learn, mapping between jp and en for each component isn't really all that productive / sometimes counterproductive lol
especially when it comes to は vs が

Truw

@RedwolfPrograms lmao. good point :p even better learn korean that way ppl think you're a k-pop stan (or whatever kids these days call it)
@cairdcoinheringaahing thanks. i'll go through them and status review whatever makes sense and then ping some people in TL :p

3:13 AM
I'll try chinese, although I probably don't have any practical use it :p
I do have some second or third cousins who live in china, they've visited once or twice but they're english teachers so it's not like we have any trouble communicating anyway

my friend (only native english and learned french in school (i think immersion + extended)) tried taking a chinese course in uni and it went ok but his pronunciation was still pretty much unrecognizable for me by the end of it :p
@RedwolfPrograms oh, that's cool. surprise them sometime by speaking chinese (also, presumably you mean mandarin) to them :p
ooh, double digit flag count. spooky

Pig latin translation userscript?

that is evil :p

@RedwolfPrograms just be glad you can say that honestly

3:29 AM
It worked perfectly until I added language selection, then it threw me BorrowError on my face. Fantastic (and so much Rusty) :/

unfortunately meta activity is a bit slow so i'll have to space these edits out quite significantly :P

This is 11 years late, but I strongly encourage all of y'all to read this, a meta.SO post by Jon Ericson (former CM) about the value of reputation as motivation vs internal motivation. We've been having a few discussions recently about "ignoring" reputation, and I think that might be one of the best posts I've read about the issue

@Bubbler Fortunately it was just a hardcoded string in a wrong casing. It works without problems now

3:46 AM
> Notably, very basic and common questions are not commonly asked on Stack Overflow anymore.
I wish

(i get what this means but still :P)

@cairdcoinheringaahing ngl, I like the reputation system, it doesn't take too long at all for someone to grind up to get the required perks if they need them, and past that, its all just internet points with no real value, and on codegolf of all sites, its easy to ignore it

I think it has flaws. It's 10 times better than any other solution though.
How does SO not end up like Quora? Reputation.
(Well, the use of reputation to let community members help moderate)

(and a ui that doesnt actively hinder trying to find answers)

well besides ease of use, the fact that SE isn't overrun with toxicity like many parts of quora and reddit i've seen. we get our share of it but the little we do get is gone quite fast

Reputation is a very elegant solution that solves a dozen problems. It lets you quickly (though roughly) determine how expierenced and, well, reputable someone is. It lets SE give moderation tools to users without it going very bad very fast. It still incentivises good answers, even if it's not perfect at it.
It rewards you for putting in the time to help someone, even if it's not the absolute optimal way to do so.

Yeah. I mean, the same system has been around for what, definitely well over a decade, with limited tweaks, and just to adjust things, not overhaul the whole thing, and it's worked all this time, kept everything mostly running very well, etc. Unfortunately reputation as the reward or metric for being helpful quickly inversely becomes the motivation to do so / participate, which can be a problem if it's the only thing someone is going after / focusing on.
I definitely think the system overall is quite good though. Of course it has its flaws but I can't really think of an alternative immediately. The mindset issue is afterall with the mindset and not the system, which is why I always encourage making sure one is actually enjoying their time here and participating because they want to.

I'm not sure how viable a system which relies solely on internal motivation could be though
It'd be very interesting to see an idea for one
Other than "you answer and then...good job!", which is probably less enjoyable
