12:00 AM
I am an eternal being of light

anyway brb doing thsi

@ASCII-only wut undelete that for a second...

@ASCII-only How is it 5?

@Zacharý well, counting the emoticon it's 5

12:02 AM

@HatWizard this must be Thomas Ward's cat

HatWizard, ASCII-Only, Riker, DJMcMayhem ... that's 4

Ghost kitty:

@Zacharý Riley

12:04 AM
@HatWizard this is beautiful

@ASCII-only THAT'S A CAT?!?!

I can't get great pics of her but I'm trying

@Zacharý what did you think

@Zacharý which? lasers? that's my cat deep fried (?) and laser'd

@Riker message it replies to

12:05 AM
@ASCII-only Dog? Is it obviously not one?

oh, it was edited

@Zacharý well i guess at icon size it kinda sorta looks like a dog

@FreezePhoenix Downcat?

@HatWizard What did you do that with?

12:07 AM

@HatWizard Kio. What on earth is that?

hold up y'all, I'm dropboxing 9 more (bad, even for blurry pics) now

@FreezePhoenix I added lens flares then applied about 9 different filters.

sadly I missed her trying to eat the toy but I've got her on a windowsill
@HatWizard what's the name of that one site that deepfries stuff?

I don't know I just use gimp.

12:08 AM
lol

Kalidoten

@Riker ave over at The Bridge has a deepfrying bot for discord IIRC

that should work
@ASCII-only I'll dm her when I get a chance

@Riker :| 0/10 the background is blurry

12:11 AM
you're not wrong
sadly my cat is now refusing to stay awake, I'll try again later
@ASCII-only messaged ave and I will await the response

This has turned into a ... CATastrophe. Seriously though, I'm having trouble figuring out how this started.

phoenix commented on the existence of cats
and then I said "hey wheat add my cat pl0x"

@Riker you could have just used the bot :P

@Riker your cat must be cold:
Thats a heat map...

lol

12:14 AM
@FreezePhoenix green? O_o

@ASCII-only Coldest color on the heat scale...

@HatWizard wut!
Staring contest with the camera at night:

@HatWizard gimp is god amirite
@FreezePhoenix that's not what she looks like at night

gimp is good

12:19 AM
3 issues with that
1 she's not on your face stopping you from breating
2 she's not begging for food at 11 pm

@HatWizard is this 100% gimp

3 you can't see the claws in front of your face

@ASCII-only I used an external tool to make it to a gif

._.

@Riker Uhoh... Wait yes then she would be in fromt of your face.

12:20 AM
@HatWizard you planning on using any of those?

@Riker As a profile image? Probably not.

@Riker What's your kitty's name?

#justmobilethings

Stupid chat

12:21 AM
I got the Nilad parser finished ^w^
@DJMcMayhem s/h//

"penelope", "weirdo", or "meepy"
@Zacharý what about somebody1234?
@Zacharý >:U that's offensive.

@Riker ?

Can I call her penny?

I mean yuo can
I never do
generally just 'meepy', since she makes that noise a lot

@Riker @Zacharý is not @ASCII-only

12:22 AM
she's also magically not fat despite eating like 4x what the vet says she should

@Riker Its hard to get a cat fat, but once you do... good luck getting it normal.

ikr
my 2nd cat does have that issue

@FreezePhoenix but ^w^ is

I think I'm using laser cat
for a pic

I'm confused ... why is @Riker asking me about somebody1234 ?!

12:24 AM
@Zacharý that's @ASCII-only's github name

@Riker My girlfriend's Kitty sitting on me

@DJMcMayhem what's with the hair pointing all over the place

Anybody here know modgrammar?

She's very floofy

@Zacharý modgrammar is terrible

12:26 AM
@DJMcMayhem tell her I said "your cat is floofy"

@Zacharý am mod have horrible grammar yes?

@ASCII-only How do strikethrough in chat

@ASCII-only I'm not using it except for tokenization and literals.

@FreezePhoenix ---

12:28 AM
@Riker Whoa... @HatWizard owns copyright to that image

@Zacharý yeah that's basically the worst thing to use it for
@FreezePhoenix that's not how copyright works

It's the same way that Mego owns all adverb language names

@ASCII-only Well, it's working, and I'm almost finished with what I'm using it for.

Oops sorry for any damage

12:29 AM
@Pavel Not all adverbs end in -ly, nor is everything that ends in -ly an adverb

@Zacharý This is true, it also has no bearing on what I just said.
I didn't say anything about -ly

@Pavel It was implied (since Mego's languages end in -ly). Or am I actually mistaken?

\o/ Gimp installed on RaspPi

grats
ok all
this is my new form

sudo apt install gimp isn't really something to celebrate tho

12:31 AM
dangit pic didn't refresh

Did for me

\o/ gimp removed on RasPi
@Riker yes it did

@Riker Did for me

nvm I didn't have my glasses on

@Zacharý They are also adverbs, which is the important bit

12:32 AM
@ThomasWard senpai are you proud of my new profile pic

s/senpai/sympy/

@Riker wow you have evolved
@Zacharý no.

@ASCII-only indeed

@FreezePhoenix *from
I could evolve too but most evolution paths require Unicode

@ASCII-only Hold on a sec...

12:34 AM
@ASCII-only Or just devolve into a fish

@FreezePhoenix :| double ping
@Zacharý you mean go down the food chain

@Riker is this a super saiyan

@quartata power level has yet to hit 9000

@FreezePhoenix it's a hummingbird

12:38 AM
@ASCII-only No its not...

@Riker clearly ultra instinct -sign- is the only sufficient form
i.e. power level like a quintillion
i don't think they've even bothered to use the power level gauges for the past few years

@ASCII-only Ya still can't beat super sonic...

when you compress a 3.7 MB folder to a 7 KB .tar.gz

that sounds like lossy compression

12:48 AM
Nope.
Folder -> TAR -> GZ
Wait I got numbers wrong...
when you compress a 37 KB folder to a 7 KB .tar.gz
Thats still insane

it's not insane though?
for a lot of text you can get >90% compression

@ASCII-only I've noticed this. Why do you put statements with a question mark?

7/37 bytes * 8 bits/byte = 1.5 which is a little over information content of English

Shiny... .tar.izma yeilds a compressed form of 6.5 KB

12:53 AM
@Dennis disappointed it's that many tbh
is there a header?

bzip2 uses checksums.

ah, ok
is there an option to strip that out?

@Dennis uh... .tar.bzip2 resulted in 7.3 KB

@quartata I don't think so. The bzip2 format is rather strict.

Whats a .xz archive?
Oops... I tried compressing /

12:56 AM
@FreezePhoenix It's just called xz
It doesn't mean anything more than that

  -j, --bzip2                filter the archive through bzip2
  -J, --xz filter the archive through xz
      --lzip filter the archive through lzip
      --lzma filter the archive through xz --format=lzma
      --lzop filter the archive through lzop
      --no-auto-compress do not use archive suffix to determine the
                             compression program
  -z, --gzip, --gunzip, --ungzip filter the archive through gzip
From man tar

Oh crap... my computer is in a compression loop...

@FreezePhoenix +1

WTF It is making progress... Darn it I thought I broke the thing.
Now I have a 434 MB .tar.gz
LOL and sudo rm saves the day...

Goodness gracious that is a big fly in my room.

@Zacharý python 2?

1:36 AM
@FrownyFrog nah I think its a "swarm fly".replace(/swarm/g, "swarm".synonyms)

@ASCII-only Python3. For some reason, I have no idea why, but / is coming back parsed as a Function, rather than a Monadic. What that boils down to: it's saying that the regex [βγδεζηθικλμξρστφχψΓΔΘΛΞΠΣΦΨΩ!"$%*+,-<=>?|~ý⊢⊣⌷≤≥≠∨∧÷×∊↑↓○⌈⌊∇⊂⊃∩∪⊥⊤⍱⍲⍒⍋⍉⌽⊖⍟⌹⍕⍎⍪‌≡≢⍷→⍶⍸⍹⍇⊆⊇⌻⌼⍃⍄⍅⍆⍈⍊⍌⍍⍏⍐⍑⍓⍔⍖⍗⍘⍚⍛⍜⍠⍡⍥⍦⍧⍩⍭⍮⍯⍰√∥‽⊗ϼ∍⋾ℑℜℂℍℕℙℚℝℤ℗ℼ↘⇘↺´á] matches "/". EXACTLY

@Zacharý ,-<...

1:41 AM

@Zacharý no...

There, tokenization is DONE.

@FrownyFrog more than any other question or more than any other country?

idk
it also says "based on English-language searches"
a weird thing to do

@Dennis I'd assume more than any other country

1:52 AM
In the absence of ties, every question is googled more in one country than in any other.
Also, why would the NY Times post a map of Europe?

Its an article...

@Dennis Lol the florida one

user2284570Shortest code to generate a random ethereum address with matching private key pair Ethereum is a blockchain platform. @NewSandboxedPosts :/
@NewSandboxedPosts So the main challenge is closed?
Well...

8:36 AM
@user202729 Yes, Please explain what is unclear since knowing how to generate an Ethereum address isn’t required.

@user2284570 I didn't VTC it but...
I don't know Ethereum.

@user202729 I explained what is Ethereum.
Also I’m failing to understand why the following is a good challenge and mine is not.
7
Q: Get ERC-20 token balance

Nick CliffordEthereum is a blockchain platform. It has its own native cryptocurrency, ether, but in this challenge, we'll be focusing on its ability to run smart contracts. The ERC-20 standard describes an implementation of fungible tokens within a smart contract. Some examples of this implementation are EOS...

@user2284570 HTTP requests are 1. generally disallowed, 2. easily become a loophole, 3. is usually very ungolfy/not supported at all and 4. don't work on TIO

@ASCII-only "generally disallowed" but you can make exceptions.
On a per-challenge basis.

@ASCII-only Or just use github.com/SilentCicero/ethereumjs-accounts. If you don’t want to do it with ʜᴛᴛᴘ.

8:40 AM
@user2284570 yeah well 1. that only works with 1 language 2. using libraries means it's a submission in a different language 3. the point that golflangs basically can't do this still holds

@ASCII-only Appanrelty Jelly has HTTP get builtin...

@user202729 yes. which is why I said basically.

@ASCII-only Ethereum is one of largest crypto. There are many language available for libraries. Golang python solidity C and C++ to list a few of them.
This basically work the same way as generating a ʀꜱᴀ keypair.

@user2284570 well, it's mostly that people just don't use libraries here
especially since every language will have a different API
i.e. different bytecounts
and it'd basically boil down to finding the library with the golfiest API

Although I didn't DV or VTC (again), in my opinion it's not very interesting.
And because I'm not interested, I have no idea how can I make it better.
What can I say: Ideally a good chalelnge should nto depend on anything.
(two of my sandboxed challenges depends on Jelly. Oops)

8:49 AM
@user202729 :|

Actually only one. Plus two challenge ideas.

codegolf.stackexchange.com/q/152844/50239 doesn’t even explain how to connect to the ethereum protocol. If you pay attention to it (which means without using any library), you need to download the whole Ethereum ledger which is more than 120Go large in order to get a working answer.

Make a meta post if you want. That draws more attention.
Personally I don't think a challenge with zero answer and only a few upvotes a well-received one.

This is harder than my question which require generating an ᴇᴄᴅꜱᴀ public/private keypair. Yet codegolf.stackexchange.com/q/152844/50239 is considered to be a good challenge and mine is not.

Q: A Close-Vote is clearly not a Super-Downvote! What to do with challenges that are wrongly closed but also widely-disliked?

user202729Related: What to do about widely disliked questions that don't technically break any rules? Unspoken challenge rules What does "unclear" mean? We have a lot of widely-disliked challenges. Some of them are wrongly closed (in my opinion), or just never reopened after issues have been fixed. ...

8:55 AM
@user2284570 well yeah. but at least all you need for that is a language that can parse JSON, which is basically every language

@ASCII-only Except golflangs...
You're contradicting yourself.

@ASCII-only Error. you’re just using a HTTP service which has downloaded the ledger. You told to not use ʜᴛᴛᴘ requests directly.

@user202729 A lot of golflangs can though?

@ASCII-only Really? Which? (I only know Jelly)

@user2284570 :| this is a good point how did I miss that
@user202729 well a significant amount even take their inputs in JSON >_>
@user2284570 well. just because it isn't closed doesn't mean it's good. you can tell from the number of answers on that :P

9:01 AM
@ASCII-only And yet, I agree connecting to the Ethereum network for downloading the ledger is a nightmare which doesn’t fill in what a post can contain (number of characters exceeded). I’m not aware of a library for doing this. This explain why there are no answers.. Not to mention how to write code for querying a 120Gb large Berkley Database without a libdb library.

@user2284570 good point. but if there was an example solution people could just replicate its behavior
@user2284570 ... the post says it is assumed that the API is installed

@ASCII-only And what’s the difference between using ᴀᴘɪ through a library and using library directly ?

@user2284570 it's a JSON API. meaning language-agnostic
plus the fact that the library is specified at all
i.e. people can't just choose which API is golfiest

@ASCII-only There’s is no official ᴊꜱᴏɴ api for Ethereum. It’s just one or several ʜᴛᴛᴘ service which has downloaded the ledger. providing there own.
@ASCII-only I gave web3.js only as an example.

@user2284570 of course. but at least it's specified

9:09 AM
@ASCII-only Not in the challenge itself.

And in solidity, it’s something supported natively by the language (address generation).

@user202729 ?

Q: Smallest possible version of abs

Artur BiesiadowskiIntroduction Dobble/SpotIt is a card game, where people have to spot same symbol on pair of cards in shortest time, indicate it and move to next pair. @JonathanAllan Why would you duplicate it in the first place...

The premise is certainly /exactly/ the same... but read my comments in the sandbox too.
@FreezePhoenix I think that while the premise is exactly the same it may well not actually be a dupe by our definitions...
...a dupe is when code can be trivially ported
I'm thinking that's not the case - see my sandbox comments (a little understanding of the complexities of the maths involved might also help though)
