CMP: Should I post a Halloween challenge before or on Halloween?

@cairdcoinheringaahing on

Before

wow that was inconclusive

My thoughts exactly :P
The problem with posting on is that people may be out when I post it, which isn't really a good thing.

true

12:15 AM
Then again, we're golfers, we don't leave the house unless Amazon refuses to deliver what we need

Remember, not everyone's halloween is happening at the same time.

@cairdcoinheringaahing Last halloween, I was playing Dota and handing out candy to little kids at the same time. Whenever the doorbell rang I would sprint down, throw candy outside, and run back upstairs to my computer.
We won that game.

@Pavel u should have thrown the candy out the window

Halloween is a lot less popular in Australia, which is boring, because Skeletons.

@Maltysen My room faces the wrong way. The only useful window is 3 feet from the door.

12:20 AM
oh shucks
well then the only correct answer is a series of ramps down the stairs

These people don't celebrate Halloween but they have Skeletons inside them, when will the hypocrisy end?

I'm doing the same thing this year I think.

@Pavel play tf2 instead

With that in mind, I'll be able to move my computer downstairs.

@Pavel this is impressive you should have streamed that
@cairdcoinheringaahing before, like maybe UTC midnight of halloween

12:22 AM
Then there are people who celebrate non-violence by ripping off plant genitalia and dressing up with them

@Maltysen the only correct answer is a string attached to a candy dispensing mechanism

you can still say it's "halloween", but people are more likely to be on

"Playing Dota 2 but every time a trick-or-treater knocks I sprint downstairs and throw candy at them"

in PST that's the day before, at 4pm

@Riker Realistically it'll be Rainbow Six Siege. I aquired Skyrim, Borderlands, Nier, Prey, and a couple others over the past few months, but every time I try to play one of them I decide to play r6s instead.

12:22 AM
@Pavel nah itll be better to sit on ur roof and throw candy from there
u wont have to get up, but also not have to interact with them

@ATaco "[Not Clickbait] GONE VIOLENT! [10 game streak can we hold it]"
@Pavel I approve of this game choice
you play on xbox, console, or ps4?

@Maltysen No poweroutlets on roof, unfortunatly.
> xbox, console, or ps4
none of the above

@Pavel that's what extension cords are for :P

is it on anything else? cool

1 min ago, by ASCII-only
@Maltysen the only correct answer is a string attached to a candy dispensing mechanism

12:23 AM
@Pavel ah whoops

@Riker PC

I meant PC not console

:P

sorry, brain did a stupid

Just InternetOfThings a CandyCannon pointed through your mail slot.

12:24 AM
lol

"Alexa, Fire the CandyCannon™"

nice

> Alexia

actually that's an even better idea

yo lets write that

12:24 AM
I don't know it's name, I'm Australian, we don't have nice things like Echos

@Maltysen I am not paying for the echo

You know how in most games, if you accidentally fire a single bullet, you reload? IRL this doesn't happen because you throw away a bunch of ammo. In R6S, if you use up an entire mag, you reload, chamber a single round, and then reload again to have increased the capacity of your gun by one.

but I will help write if you ship it

get a candy dispenser, arduino and some kind of motor -> magic -> done

@Riker Its_Epi is reading the R6S patchnotes for everyone in the R6S discord in 5 minutes

12:25 AM
@Pavel wait what

@Pavel :/ not in the discord
invite? I'll join if you have a link

@Riker a google assistant/alexa thing that reacts to candy keywords and communicates with an arduino to give pulse of output to a pin
just the code

@Maltysen I need one for testing purposes
plz send one

itll be up to users to upload to arduino + attach motor

ty

12:26 AM
@Riker i don't have one either

compressed air + arduino

@Riker android phone "ok google"
for testing

lol

@Maltysen well it's easier to just have a global hotkey on your computer

@ASCII-only yeah but its more fun to use voice commands

12:27 AM
i guess

"Alexa, FIRE!" "Aye Aye, Captain." Fwoop!

> just for fun, looks up anagrams of a name
> Arsenic Pros
I feel like that's gonna put me on a list

Channel is "Fireside chat with epi"

kk

I may or may not have time for the viewing/reading/whatever

@ASCII-only yeah thats what im talking about
its pretty easy
idk bout alexa
if we get it out before halloween it might be popular

Google's Assistant might be easier to do. And any android phone has it.

+google home etc

@DJMcMayhem No reposts pls this isn't 9gag

12:28 AM
"Okay Google, Fire at the children."

rofl

ooh

@ASCII-only i'll set up a conversation in api.ai

@ATaco ... that's what i linked to

12:29 AM
@Pavel I've played a little box, xbox 1
>_> all sledge cuz I like the hammer

(I know, I was commenting on it)

@Maltysen what exactly would it trigger

@Riker Sledge is fun.

@ASCII-only idk we can decide that later

sledge is amazing

12:29 AM
either arduino
or ITTT in gerneal

Compressed Air is very useful for making small things move really quickly.

hmm actually not sure if just sending a message to a nodemcu running a server would work

@ASCII-only ok how anout instread of relying on user installtion with arduino etc
and make it play spooky sounds

@Maltysen user installation?

so like "ok google, scare the children"

12:30 AM
@Riker :O it's started

and make the guy have a bluetooth speaker
we pivot away from candy shooting

If anyone does install a candy cannon in their mailslot, please put approriate warnings, as children are usually at around mail slot hight, and parents like to sue if their child is hit in the eye by the wrong and of a lollipop.

@ATaco don't think a high speed candy cannon is a good idea either way
@Maltysen what do you mean by user installation though

Marshmallows may be a good alternative, but when they inevitably land on the floor, they will not be edible.

@ASCII-only like having the people using the code we write have to do electronic work
i think if we make a "ok google , scare the children"
it might even be popular
app

12:32 AM
No-one plans to make a voice controlled candy cannon with good intentions.

@Pavel lol, the beeps from connections

@Maltysen :O good idea

"bink, bunk, bink, bunk"

@Riker You can disable that
See pins

@Maltysen yeah of course, but the least we can do is provide the code for the arduinos/nodemcus/whatever else is popular

12:33 AM
"Okay google, scare the children" "Taxes! oOooO! Student Loads!"

@ASCII-only the thing with the scare the children idea is that it won't require any of that, only a hidden bluetooth speaker
@ATaco rofl

oh right
good idea

Are there any challenges that could have simplified solutions with the usage of ecpp? (or... any challenges in the real world? Did I write a useful thing or not?)

A speaker isn't that scary, though. Automatic ones have existed for years.

@ATaco ..true
hmmm

12:35 AM
you could add Hue lights :P

Firing a fullsized snickers at a child's head through a mail slot is both exciting and illegal.

@ASCII-only lol

@ATaco illegal meaning the important part here

@ATaco we could have many options

@Maltysen like you could even add ones to fill up the entire entryway and make them flickering orange lights

12:36 AM
all with the keyword of "children", etc

options:

like "ok google, scare teh children" ok google, play music for the children"

Probably more safe would be a candy dispenser that just outputs a handful of lollies through a chute or something, combined with Spooky Google™

scare the children
terrify the children
make the children wet their pants

lol
yeah scare would be the gerneal one i guess
to pick at random
so other could be

12:38 AM
terrify would be all of them at once

"ok google, eat the children"

@ATaco yeah of course

"ok google, swing swords at the children"

oh yeah that is the best idea ever
but you'd need powerful servos for that

"ok google, scream at the children"
@ASCII-only no rofl

12:39 AM
Step 1, Take control of Google's Assistant API. Step 2, Find a way to connect it to various things. Step 3, Spook.

not actual swrods
sound effects

@Maltysen yeah plastic swords :P
and add proximity detection to make sure they don't actually hit

Real swords. It will be a valuable lesson.

:OOOOOOOOOOOOO @Riker I got mentioned by name by Epi am I famous now

the cusomizability at the moment + voice makes it better than an automatic speaker

12:40 AM
@Pavel yes
sell yourself for interviews

"Okay Google; Scare the children." "Housing Prices have been growing at a rate inproportional to that of inflation, making it more and more unlikely someone will afford a house in their lifetime."

I was scared for a second but it looks like api.ai just changed their name to dialogflow

"If you were replaced, atom by atom, with a different set of atoms, you'd never notice the point in which you stopped being you."

@Maltysen you know calc right?

@Riker yah

12:44 AM
what's the implicit derivative of y^2
i.e. d/dx(y^2)
is it just 2y?

2y * dy/dx

or is it 2y*d/dx(y) or smth
ah okk
thanks!

chain rule

ya

Man, I can't remember anything from Calculus.

12:45 AM
and dy/dx is the same as y'(x) right
@ATaco that is not good

@Riker yup

cool

@Pavel JVM allows you to implement a dynamic type system through the INVOKEDYNAMIC opcode, but it doesn't directly support (see: golo-lang.org)

I'd like to blame my teacher, but I think it's more the fact that we were never paying attention in class.

@Maltysen wait is implicit derivative just basically chain rule

12:46 AM
no

@ASCII-only usually

really?
huh

but it also does product rule etc.
@Riker yah

implicit derivative is evil (but yes)

ah I see

12:47 AM
<- didn't listen in class

The derivative of x^3 is 3x^2, right..?

basically assume all variables are functions of t

@Maltysen I thought you meant it was only chain rule and you never used product
which confused me

but somehow implicit derivative was the only thing i didn't know

@SocraticPhoenix that isn't what I'm learning

12:47 AM
@Riker -_- than what is?

@Riker u use the other ruels for in respect of y, then u have to get it in x with with chain rule

@SocraticPhoenix I thought it was just derivative of an equation vs a function

@SocraticPhoenix people say induction is evil

no T
just d/dx times both sides of an equation

@Riker yeah, but when d/dx ing the y terms
u have to use chain rule

12:48 AM
distribute it, and that use the rules

and that always happens

Do on-topic conversations ever happene here? The last hour or so was talking about shooting kids with snickers, then about calculus. Do we ever talk about golfing code?

@cairdcoinheringaahing yes

@cairdcoinheringaahing if anyone asks

@Pavel hype for crashing discord with goodbyes?

12:50 AM
aBSOLUTELY

I thought this WAS golfing code. Boy am I ever embarrassed.

*Absolutely
It's happening

oh my god
i have questions

This was a godawful idea

pavel help my ears

12:51 AM
It should happen more often
<-- has headphones

this is like that metallica song with the wub pedal abuse
@Pavel same

Welp

lol there's some guy screaming "WeeeHOOO"

What did Pavel do?

Crashed for me

12:51 AM
haha

I managed to golf 10 bytes off my recent funky answer, mostly by rearranging operations to work better with it's R2L ordering.

you're missing the airhorn
@ATaco link?

@Riker aww
Someone is recording though

2
A: Output the Source, One Bit at a Time

ATacoFunky, 47 41 37 bytes Returns a number representing a bit. f=_=>1&("%b"%("f="+f)[i//8])>>7-i++%8 This uses the quine format of f=_=>"f=%s"%f. It takes the character at position ⌊i/8⌋, then, gets the bit by taking the pairity of n >> 7-i%8 where n is the ascii value of the current character. ...

@Pavel and allahu akbar being screamed

12:53 AM
Weeee

@Pavel :p
I'm outta there, gonna eat some dinner

Yeah I was listening on my phone and the app crashed
Cya

@Pavel heh
see y'all

Can someone post a disapproval face? I have something to disapprove of
3

ಠ_ಠ

12:54 AM
Thanks

@cairdcoinheringaahing 0/10 you should get wincompose
or a tacoscript at the very least

@cairdcoinheringaahing 눈_눈

or my bookmarklet
javascript: $("#input").keyup(function(){$("#input").val($("#input").val().replace(/o/g, "%E0%B2%A0"))})

@ASCII-only I'm on mobile

@cairdcoinheringaahing ಠ‿ಠ

12:55 AM
@cairdcoinheringaahing get a sane keyboard (i.e. one with the disapproval face)

ಠ_ಠ I downloaded a GitHub app, which doesn't allow you to edit documents in your repos
@Riker That is actually terrifying

why does gboard not have disapproval face
whyyyy

@ASCII-only time fಠr sಠme 1-star reviews
ಠh wait my bಠಠkmarklet is still ಠn
relಠading

@Maltysen 0/10 you should make your bookmarklet toggle

Anonymous
@Pavel Python's async syntax is sane. async def foo(): await bar(); return x

12:59 AM
CMP: What is the most stars you've ever got on a single message?

@cairdcoinheringaahing you should ask that to doorknob

@Mego TIL. That's almost exactly the C# syntax.
@Mego What happens if I say a = foo() without await?

Anonymous
@Pavel You get a continuation object that can be wrapped into a Future or passed to an event loop

I think I need to know more python than I currently do for that to make sense. Is it basically a C# Task

Anonymous

Anonymous
More or less

@Mego Wait when are you moving to Seattle
Because that message was a year ago and Chronos tells me you still live in Texas.

Nov 12 '15 at 22:26, by Doorknob
okay seriously stop abusing stars

gimme link to spooky sound

@Maltysen link

1:17 AM
@Pavel I didn't get the job either time :(

@Maltysen [another link](www.ranker.com/list/creepiest-audio-recordings/vicky-choy)

@ASCII-only :| oops link fail

1:42 AM
you need the https://www.etc.etc

@Riker i know >_>

@Mego oh. Rip.

2:16 AM
@ASCII-only thanks
oh wait i needed a file
link

@Maltysen :P

like an audio file url

@Maltysen mp3skulls.to -> search spooky

tahks
wait that doesn't have direct link either
whatever ill use example file

@Maltysen wait wat
it shouldn't
all download links are third party

i must be missing something
can u give me a link

> The Perl motto is "There's more than one way to do it." Divining how many more is left as an exercise to the reader.

@ASCII-only no i mean can u give an example link
of a sound file
with either source

tahnks
have no idea how u got it lol
