You could start with a chunk of transcript
I usually just go up and press "load older messages" several times
ETHbot is running in Beep Boop Maggot, btw
This isn't in JS by the way
Sorry, I wrote it in Python
Had to
That's fine by me
please help: is abs(x) = x? It seems like it would be but then what if x is like -2. Then abs(-2) != 2. I need to simplify this equation: a+|bx|>c so I can graph
@AshwinGupta abs(x) != x for all x < 0
abs(x) = x if x > 0 else -x
01:02
abs(x) = x * sgn(x)
@ConorO'Brien ok, but I haven't got a clue what x is in this case
so does that mean I can't simplify |x| to x
Best to split it into two cases and treat them separately I think
because I got to this:
a+|bx| > c
|bx| > c-a
|b| * |x| > c-a
|x| > (c-a)/|b|
@AshwinGupta a + |bx| > c can be rewritten as |bx| > c - a, which splits into two cases, bx > c - a and bx < -(c - a). You can graph these separately.
@AshwinGupta You can simplify it if x is restricted to positive numbers. Or -x if x is restricted to negative numbers.
01:04
By the way, does anyone know of a good Python module that will clean up verb conjugation/plural issues? (i.e I is a hams -> I am a ham)
I could easily roll my own but a module would be nice
oh wait. Hold on im an idiot.
no nvm. doesn't help
Sup peeps.
the directions say that a, b, and c are positive.
@Zizouz212 Hello. I hope you aren't here because something got flagged
so |b| = b. but no help for x
01:05
Hi zizouz!
@Zizouz212 hiya
Is |nm|=|n|*|m|? I assume so, but I want to check.
I'm a blue person. I'm free! Free like a bird!!
@DanTheMan according to my math teacher
@quartata lol, I just came to hang out :)
01:05
but then again, not sure if I trust her
@quartata Now about node box's linguistics library?
@AshwinGupta Try graphing |x| by itself. Just for the intuition of what |x| and |bx| look like.
@AshwinGupta I think it should be.
@DJMcMayhem I actually I think nltk (which I'm already using) probably has it
@DanTheMan Yep. It is.
01:06
@El'endiaStarman Well thats just a ray starting at 0 going to the right.
on a number line that is.
Speaking of nodebox's linguistics library...
17
A: Reassuring parables

DJMcMayhemHere's a slightly different approach: Python, 368 308 297 bytes EDIT, I actually golfed it this time. Shaved off 60 characters. from random import* from en import* C=choice v=["code-golf","understand","go","do"] n=["salad","octopus","fun","lunch"] for f,l in("verbs",v),("nouns",n):exec"l.appen...

:D
Hey! What happened to the cool quote at the top right corner?
@Zizouz212 The one that we got rid of months ago?
Some people interpreted as a mandate to goof off, I guess.
sigh. |x| > (c-a)/b
01:10
Months ago? I haven't been gone that long have I?
in Beep Boop Maggot, 2 mins ago, by Laff-O-Tron
@ETHbot Please no Zalgo?
@TùxCräftîñg
but that doesn't work. I can't graph that on a number line. I think I've got to just assume x is positive.
Why'd you folks change it?
because mods think it's not proper for there to be a humourus quote when the room is on cooldown >_<
01:11
Cooldown?
He means timeout
@AshwinGupta No, you don't.
same dif >_>
Wait. You folks have been causing trouble?
\o/
@ΛεγίωνΜάμμαλϠΟΗʹ Salads are pretty funny, to be honest.
01:11
@AshwinGupta Well, it should be symmetric over the y-axis, right? Because |-x|=|x|
Oh yeah, every single day it seems
Wow. I've never been here then. Mind you, now that I think about it, I haven't really been around anywhere on SE the last few weeks
@DanTheMan wait lemme think about that. Sorry, I'm horrible at this.
@DanTheMan All absolute functions are symmetric over the y-axis. They look like a giant V.
@AshwinGupta Suppose c=4,a=2,b=1. Then we have (c-a)/b = 2, and so |x|>2. This is the case if x is greater than 2, OR if x is less than -2.
01:13
@DLosc oh okay
I get it.
What exactly are you trying to graph?
Petition to bring back the room description quote.
28
@Zizouz212 on a # line. Not 2d
# line?
Oh.
01:14
@DLosc hold on I'll take a photo of one of the other problems so u can see
@PhiNotPi The countless times you folks have used that against me... Oh well, sure!
@PhiNotPi Or we could get a now quote.
Hmmm....
I propose "Birds of a feather golf together"
Please suggest others.
01:16
+1 for bird reference, -1 for bird reference
Anywhere here read A Clockwork Orange?
ah crap. Its sideways, hold on I'll take a new pic.
No need. It's fine like that.
@AshwinGupta It's cool. Especially if you do those 2d languages (which everyone does 'round here)
@Zizouz212 lol
like that.
01:18
What math is dis?
@Zizouz212 algb2/trig h. Only a freshmen so I don't know any advanced stuff. Only basic crap like this
@DJMcMayhem I present... Message 32323232
@PhiNotPi It's not like you're biased or anything...
@AshwinGupta Oh dear. Don't ask me! :P
lol thats what all adults say.
01:19
Wait. Grade 9?
I... Um... Feel really stupid.
@KazWolfe :O
@Zizouz212 y?
Something is happening. I had the nerve to drop calculus for art, and I joined the biology club -_-
What is wrong with me?
01:20
@El'endiaStarman I don't actually care what quote it is though, I think any quote is better than none.
@Zizouz212 nothing. Art is cool. I'm bad at it, but its still cool.
@PhiNotPi No. I think that Chatiquette is more important these days
(sadly)
@AshwinGupta That's the thing. I'm crazy bad at it - I can't draw at all
@quartata Both?
@Zizouz212 Soft science pleb
@Zizouz212 lol. Same. But I guess thats how you get better: take a class
01:21
@Zizouz212 They won't fit
@quartata Then we should get a new quote.
"Don't do stars kids"
@AshwinGupta Either I took it to get better, or since I had friends in that class... Probably a bit of both
@PhiNotPi I think one reason the quote was taken off was to leave more room for the star board.
@Zizouz212 yeah, thats pretty much me.
01:22
"Don't tick off the mods. They'll remove this quote."
9
:P
Ok anyways, I better go and finish this page.
Thanks for all the help
Wait. So this is Grade 9 math?
(I'm in Grade 12 btw)
@Zizouz212 nah, its grade 11 math usually
My middle school let us take algb/geo during 7/8 grades
Oh wait. It's an inequality! (it is, right?)
yeah xD
01:23
@AshwinGupta do you still need help?
Are we talking about the absolute value inequalities? I feel like inequalities are taught multiple times across many grade levels.
Wow. I feel really stupid :P
@ConorO'Brien thanks for the offer. I think I've got it now.
@PhiNotPi yeah they are. We learned them in algb 1 and geo also.
Ok cya guys, I need to study!
01:25
@PhiNotPi yeah, can confirm.
Inequalities: (5 > 1)

  ____            __________
 |                \   0  |  \
 ----\             \     |   |
     |             /     |   |
 ____/            /______|__/
Wow. That came out horrible. Is it just me, or when you were younger, did you use packman to figure out inequalities?
The sign eats the bigger number?
Yep :)
No, I used the fact that there's 2 points on one side of > and 1 point on the other.
@ConorO'Brien sorry zyabin, found your other sock
01:27
I would always draw packman with the sign as the mouth.
socks? OOh...
I was fine with remembering that the bigger end is the bigger number, I just couldn't remember the names of the symbols, because "greater than" could be > or < depending on if you read it left or right
@Zizouz212 at my school it's 11-12th grade (US)
so 17-18 yo
@Zizouz212 don't bring yours pls (any of the 42)
Ah. I'm Grade 12... You folks and your nth grade...
lol
@Zizouz212 what age is that?
@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ Oh. Half of the accounts on Open Source (2542 actually) are just my socks.
@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ 17-18
kk
@Zizouz212 so they seem to be the same, with the number/grade order swapped
Yep. :)
TBH I don't think inequalities should be 11th grade math at all... more like middle school. The only time in high school inequalities were actually challenging was for "radius of convergence" in calculus.
01:30
@quartata maybe drop the "general discussion for"? Just the link?
@PhiNotPi On my screen I can already only see 5 items on the starboard (4 if the browser page isn't full screen, and 3 if I show the task bar).
Only inequalities I worked with (that I remember recently) was stuff like x^2-5x+3 > 0 and stuff like that.
Basically for any polynomial, and we had to solve. Same for rationals
@trichoplax Wow. Tiny screen or giant font?
@PhiNotPi I'm taking them in 8th grade right now, but most of the kids in my class don't get it. >_>
@trichoplax I see 10 :P
Mine would have room for 13, maybe 14.
I just have a big blank gap there now.
^
it seems to cap at 10ish
@Zizouz212 I spent more time than I probably should have to fix this, but... :P
It looks beautiful! :D
@Zizouz212 *'42
like '86
01:33
@Geobits 1366x768. I could fit more in if I switched to portrait mode, but then I'd have to hold my laptop like a book...
Actually, that makes me remember. We have 5060 users, but only like 700 of em have actually done something.
@Geobits Most-common screen size? I have 1366x768 and I can only see five starred messages right now, and that's with clicking the "show more" option.
@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ Is this the first time you've "seen" (officially speaking) inequalities in school?
Oh... common laptop size.
Everyone knows laptops aren't real computers.
01:35
Maybe I'll get a real computer one day...
i did 'x > y, graph/shade the region' in 5th grade
@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ Okay, just wondering. I really should be able to remember more about my own education than I actually do.
i feel the same about what I learned < 4 grade, in 8th
I need to get a laptop... But I can only get a laptop if I have money... And to get money I need a job... And good jobs are difficult to find... Which means to get a job I need to be less picky :/
@ConorO'Brien Laptops! Hello!
@ConorO'Brien Should've made the other option "Desktops".
But I voted for "Laptops" anyway.
cricket cricket cricket
@ConorO'Brien But, laptops are computers!
01:45
6 mins ago, by El'endia Starman
@ConorO'Brien Should've made the other option "Desktops".
@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ Almost all rooms have that.
It shouldn't be dropped
@ConorO'Brien You missed out tablets and mobiles.
@Zizouz212 get a job at your local goat farm :D
01:51
Yay, I'm in GH trending: github.com/trending/unknown
Pretty happy about that 4chan exposure huh
@mınxomaτ wow, cool! :D
Should probably change the default branch though
@quartata More like the #2 slot on HN for the last few hours.
> :fire: CURRENTLY LOW BANDWIDTH BECAUSE CDN IS ON FIRE :fire:
01:52
@mınxomaτ Oh, that would definitely help.
That's where Doorknob's mkcast got all its stars
I should put something good on Github soon
@El'endiaStarman Well, it's true.
@Downgoat Oh god
;_;
@quartata don't waste time putting cheese on Github beacuse no one star ches ;_;
@Downgoat 21+ people iirc
;_; but no trending
idk where to share
01:56
@mınxomaτ Project?
i need to make something cool in cheddar
@Zizouz212 turbo/alwsl
@Downgoat I actually have something fairly interesting in the works. Hopefully it will come out good
@quartata sneak peak? :3
And all there is is a readme.md... -_-
It's still mostly an idea. I'm planning the pieces out
@Zizouz212 check the other branch
01:57
Oh. dev branch
Related: has anyone here ever used Lilypond?
@quartata btw how is pytek coming?
speaking of pytek i need to make classes for cheddar now brb
@ASCII-only I'll be in cheddar1 c9 if you wanna halp make classes
