@AlexA. So I'm not the only one that carries brass knuckles, just hoping for something like that to happen?

Of course not

Have we had a challenge about calculating the permanent of a matrix?

No, or at least not by that name

I've never heard of a permanent of a matrix.

In linear algebra, the permanent of a square matrix is a function of the matrix similar to the determinant. The permanent, as well as the determinant, is a polynomial in the entries of the matrix. Both permanent and determinant are special cases of a more general function of a matrix called the immanant. == Definition == The permanent of an n-by-n matrix A = (ai,j) is defined as perm ⁡ ( A ) = ∑ σ ∈ S n ...

6:15 PM
@AlexA. /me tries to make a pun on "Immanuel"

:P
Good luck and godspeed

It comes up in the context of #P problems a lot

The immanant is something I'm not familiar with
@quartata I hear that trends on Twitter among mathematicians

@Alexa. Yeah I've never heard of the immanant until now

Oh, the permanent is just the determinant without sign changes.

6:19 PM
@quartata that's your job

Oh jeez, GitHub set me up for automatic notifications on 31 repositories because I was given push access. :|
I'm going to have a billion emails

Oooh, TIL about the #P complexity class. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sharp-P

@AlexA. These repos are CROWDED? D:

Crowded?

People very frequently add issues/pull requests/comments/commits on them?

6:22 PM
Oh, yeah.
It's all of the official repos for statistics stuff in Julia
One of the several reasons I've been fairly absent lately is that I've been contributing to Julia and the Julia ecosystem

Oh Alex is back

o/

finished migrating?

Might have been hit by fireworks flak.

When I was about 18 I accidentally set my girlfriend's sister's dress on fire with a firework
14

6:31 PM
> "accidentally"
Uh huh

>_>

important question is: did she drop the dress?

Yes, but I didn't look.

too busy taking pictures
( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Wait, was this an older or younger sister? This matters. >_>

6:33 PM
Younger, by several years

Nevermind then

She must have been about 14

Im not saying anything about other's preference, only thats not for me :)

You mean you don't like setting young girls on fire?
4

hey alex!

6:34 PM
im not a pyromaniac

ltns

im sorry

@AlexA. That's just.... wrong >_>

@AlexA. Interesting first message to read from the chat today.

@Optimizer Indeed. Greetings, my llama friend.

6:35 PM
the fur on my back has grown worms now that you were not around
8

@muddyfish Nor am I. Sometimes fireworks just... get out of hand.
@Optimizer Gross

@AlexA. I know the feeling

fishes don't have fur.

You have worms too?

or back

6:35 PM
Do fishes not have backs?

Fish have backs.

its tail
not back

better?

\o/ 100th PR on five!

Nice!

6:36 PM
@Optimizer No, not the tail. Where the dorsal fin is... along the spine.

so both sides is back?

o_O

Borrowing from German Backfisch ‎(“teenage girl”, literally “fish for frying”)

How many dorsal fins do your fish have? The ones I've seen only have them on one side.

6:37 PM
German poetry, ahh

Wait what

@Geobits oh. i have no idea.

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ Well, come what may.

While I was at fireworks last night, one of them went sideways and they set the ground on fire.

How is that word relevant to both recent topics of conversation

6:37 PM
@Geobits personally I have 2

@zʏᴀʙiɴ101 I don't know what that's supposed to mean in reference to a PR.

back of a fish, and setting a teenage girl on fire

Delayed it all by like 15 minutes.

@muddyfish Well that muddies things a bit.

@Geobits it sure does
It's surprisingly hard to talk in chat and play a game of civ 5

6:38 PM
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ The mandatory Travis build is ongoing.

@muddyfish :P In my defense, they were my girlfriend's dad's fireworks, and he thought it was pretty funny.

@zʏᴀʙiɴ101 I know that.

(It was not intentional)

@muddyfish I find it hard to do that even without talking in chat. civ44life

> Hang tight, the log cannot be shown until the build has started.
Well, maybe not ongoing.

6:39 PM
All these etiquettes and rules that mods make for the chat .. along with chat freeze and what not. And then Alex returns on chat...

@Geobits Wow, they sure have made a lot of Civilizations games.

Q: Implement Takewhile

SEJPMIntroduction and Credit Today without a fancy prelude: Please implement takewhile. A variation of this (on a non-trivial datastructure) was an assignment at my university functional programming course. This assignment is now closed and has been discussed in class and I have my professor's permi...

@Optimizer Do you see any carets? ;P

dont tempt...

Resistance is futile.

6:41 PM
> Done. Your build exited with 0.
\o/

Zero what?

Zero success :D

XD
It's funny because it's accurate

XD

I tried creating a community promotion advertisement, opinions?

6:43 PM
> Your build exited with no money, no job, and no home. Welcome to life after college.

(I'm still working on it)

@AlexA. and no degree
only a back of worms

@Bálint Needs better font before anything else imo.

@Bálint I like the idea, though the tour won't actually be useful until we get site specific text.

@AlexA. You know, this is why it's called promotion ad

6:44 PM
? I don't understand

you are promoting a generic tour page?

@Optimizer I'm pretty sure you can get medicine for that instead of relying on birds.

@AlexA. It's going to change if ppcg promotes, isn't it?

@Geobits we don't have any doctors in the farm here

@Bálint Maybe not?

6:45 PM
@Bálint Not necessarily

The tour is only benefit to those new to this site.

@zʏᴀʙiɴ101 Yeah

@Bálint As Geobits said, not necessarily. Our site-specific text is "under review"; there's no guarantee that any of it will be implemented.

@zʏᴀʙiɴ101 I don't know that it's actually a benefit to those new to this site.

6:46 PM
@Geobits Yeah, this was the first free font I remembered

@Bálint Good concept. To make it look better, have the path travel somewhere through the middle of the ad instead of just around the edge. Also, consider adding a compass rose and a textured background.

@Optimizer You should see about fixing that. It would be much less traumatic than having Alex burn the worms off with fireworks.

@Geobits llamas really dont get enrolled into medical colleges..

Why not? Do they not study hard enough?

@PhiNotPi I originally wanted to add a texture to the background, but I think it's better if it's simpler

6:48 PM
Or is it a lack of extracurriculars?

they cant write entrance tests well with those hooves

Oh, good point. I've seen how goats type too, so I imagine it's hard for any hooved animal.

What do you think about the font?

wow, one bad font after another

@Optimizer Yeah, that's what I thought

6:50 PM
If you're going to make it a pirate map, use some sort of handwritten, piratey font
Ya know, like Comic Sans
<_<

@Geobits ...
Huh, I don't really like this one

he was joking.

@Optimizer It's not comic sans
It's "Lindsey" I think

how about a monotype font since the site is mainly coding based

Everyone knows pirates love to golf

6:54 PM
@Optimizer @Bálint Inconsolata!

@Bálint Other images for your consideration: previews.123rf.com/images/casaltamoiola/casaltamoiola1205/… or thumbs.dreamstime.com/x/cartoon-treasure-map-15028828.jpg or s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/736x/ec/85/81/…. My point is you can add a textured border with the inside of the map still being a solid color for readable text.

@PhiNotPi The problem isn't with the readability
If you design a banner, you need to look at the page it will be at
SE's design is very simple
I'll add a slight gradient to it
Anyone knows a good typeface for this? I'm out of ideas

10 mins ago, by Geobits
Ya know, like Comic Sans

7:03 PM
@mınxomaτ just 1001?

God I hate that kid.

set her on fire
as is tradition

Why is every font unreadable?

Open your eyes?

this one is not

7:04 PM
It helps to know how to read.

I mean on this site: 1001freefonts.com
At least most

font-family: Verdana,Arial,sans-serif;

I usually just browse dafont.com when looking for something like this.

Wait no, it was moved to fonts.google.com :P

7:06 PM
Retina beats a Mathematica built-in at an challenge. My life is complete.

> Grumpy wizards make toxic brew for the evil Queen and Jack.

now you can go habitate and conquer another planet?

@Bálint I'm reading that as if it has two verbs and it's slightly disturbing.
> Grumpy wizards [make toxic brew for the evil Queen] and [Jack].

Ohh, the new Google Fonts are cool.

This is simple arial

7:17 PM
Take out the "you" in the second line
Also, "out our tour" looks awkward

@Downgoat y u no merge PR or even comment on it

@Bálint there are hundreds of free, superior fonts

@Geobits s/\bour\b/the/ would probably fix that. That said, this ad would only make sense if we finally get a useful tour page.

@MartinEnder Yeah, I only post it after that

Yeah, that would be an easy fix. But agreed on the tour thing not being helpful atm.

7:24 PM
@AlexA. gg. I set the lawn on fire yesterday. :/
we have a pool though, so water put it out.

I made it simpler

I think it could also use some texture in the background. Just something light to make it look more like parchment or something.
Maybe some rips, creases, that sort of thing, too.

38 mins ago, by Bálint
@PhiNotPi I originally wanted to add a texture to the background, but I think it's better if it's simpler
I try to make it fit the SE

I read that before. I just disagree :P
If you're going for "pirate map", make it look like a pirate map.
Not something that came out of an inkjet printer.

why not post and delete it so high rep people know about it?

7:33 PM
@Geobits Because this
looks like a real sandbox

how doesn't it?
its got sand right?
not custard or anything?

It's clearly not supposed to though. It looks cartoony. The map looks like it's supposed to be a map, but doesn't.

Popularity contest: generate something that looks like a map

A: Generate Realistic Maps

MoogieI agree with the others, This was a surprisingly difficult challenge. Partially due to the requirement to have adjacently connected pixels of the same region type, but also due to the aesthetic challenge to make the regions look like a map of countries. Here is my attempt... it is horribly ineff...

"Realistic" :p

7:40 PM
ripples
I can improve it if it looks better this way
@Geobits ?

I think it looks better

@Bálint That looks nice. I'm just not sure the tour page is something worth advertising.

@Bálint that looks suspiciously like an answer from the procedural wall paint challenge

@MartinEnder ... The worst thing is that you're correct...

See! A practical use for our site!

7:48 PM
@Bálint the bad part being how much time I spent on this site to be able to recognise that...

Full circle!

@muddyfish Hey, inspiration and education have practical purposes! :)

Wow. Converting a DateTime to a string and back in C# causes loss of precision. That makes no sense whatsoever.
myDate != DateTime.Parse(myDate.ToString())

Where is the precision lost?

Conversion from DateTime to string
i.e. in DateTime.ToString()

Q: Leave a Comment

The Programmer GTask: Make a program that leave a comment on this question. The content should be "!" (to save you some bytes). You may leave your usernames and passwords as U and P, respectively.

I wonder if I can tell it to keep precision. But I don't care anymore because I decided to pass the "ticks" instead.

hey, if I'm looking to reduce the memory impact of a page, what portions would you target? JS? Too many DOM elements? Complex CSS layouts? (Obviously, all of these have an impact on memory, but what usually takes the majority)
