Added bonus if the room layout is tile-able. An L shape where the doorways are at the ends of the hall is trivial, hence uninteresting.
The best I've come up with so far is to tessellate plus signs. There would be two different varieties: one where the doorways are at the ends, and the other has doorways on the walls to match up with the doorways of the former kind.
@quartata .htm
@El'endiaStarman Related
@El'endiaStarman you could try posting that to puzzling if there is no luck here
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ I feel like it's not well-defined enough to post to Puzzling, but it's something I worked on a bit earlier today. It's a fun mental challenge.
sure it is
but, yes, it is (to fun mental challenge)
4:10 PM
One almost-solution that I came up with early on was one where there was a single room with four doors: two at the ends and two on walls, but it had an infinite line of sight that intersected an interior corner, so if the doorways had non-zero width, there would be an infinite line of sight.
by infinite line of site, do you mean one where two doors share a line in the interior?
Not necessarily, since a "line" of sight among three doors may bend in the middle.
The idea is to avoid the need to use fog or cut-off methods in raytracing.
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ I tried, but I can't figure out what the lines represent.
triangle = room, those other linse are halls
4:15 PM
Are the other lines the walls of the halls, or do they represent the halls themselves?
Question: how are Vim plugins scored? .vimrc required bytes?
@El'endiaStarman walls
@MichaelKlein I don't think Vim plugins are allowed.
@El'endiaStarman Off topic but if you own Portal 2 SDK this will probably be a good way to experiment with some of non-Euclidean layout things
@zʏᴀʙiɴ101 I'd think that Vim plugins should be treated like non-standard language libraries (i.e. JavaScript + jQuery).
4:16 PM
Why should they be? You can just say it's Vim + <vim plugin> and do it for free.
Q: Reverse the consonants

nicaelThe program should take a string as input and reverse the consonants in it, while keeping the order of vowels. All the letters will be lowercase, so you don't have to worry about casing. Examples follow. Input: a test case. The consonants here are t,s,t,c,s. They should come in reversed order,...

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ Yeah, I do think that room layout could work. Maybe. Now I'm confusing myself a bit. :P
Thing is, though, it has to be an effectively infinite map.
I'm a little confused right now, how are you trying to layout the room?
4:24 PM
I just reached the "cast close & reopen votes" privilege! Time to do actual work.
Okay, again, this is meant for FPS-style gameplay. There are some number of distinct rooms (this number may be 1). Doorways allow a player (and projectiles, vision, etc) to pass from one room to another. These rooms need not be adjacent. In the interest of avoiding infinite render distance, there must be no single, straight, uninterrupted, infinite line of sight. The idea is to have a weird open-and-closed world. Open since there are no hard boundaries, closed since the playing area is finite.
All right
To put those last two sentences in other words, your relative displacement as measured by yourself should be able to become arbitrarily large while your absolute displacement as measured with respect to the world remains bounded and finite.
Sorry for poor quality (it's my laptop's webcam), but you can see a failed solution on the right and my best solution thus far on the left.
Dots represent doors.
If you represent the level as a graph with vertices being rooms and edges being door connections between rooms then all you need to do is make sure the graph is acyclic, right?
Not quite, actually. That doesn't take into account lines of sight.
4:30 PM
Hmm, I guess that's kinda rigid though. There are cyclic graphs where there wouldn't be an infinite line of sight because it curves or something
basically ninja'd
What if the doors close behind you?
Suppose that players collaborate to keep all doors open.
Like, you have to walk up to a door to open it and you can't keep a door open. Then you could only see at most two rooms at once
@El'endiaStarman Oh, this is multiplayer?
Hmm. I forgot to mention that I was thinking multiplayer.
That makes it more complicated
4:33 PM
but much more interesting!
Indeed. :D
My ultimate vision is to have a 3D spaceship FPS game where the environment is filled with obstacles formed by 3D simplex noise (somewhat like Minecraft's Extreme Hills M biomes), and the faces of the cubical playing space are linked to each other such that vision and objects pass seamlessly from one side to another.
@El'endiaStarman it just sounds like you are making a toroidal FPS
er, you just said 4D
Yes, though it doesn't strictly have to be toroidal.
@NathanMerrill If you're trying to stress his ability to write good/popular challenges, saying "20 votes each" isn't very impressive. Even I average 27 votes per challenge. His [popularity-contest] average is much higher.
4:43 PM
@NathanMerrill I actually meant 3D.
^^ Was actually on the Internet
@Bigtoes I think that most people agree that his posts are popular. I was just doing a rough estimate based on the last few challenges he's written. His average is likely much higher
Oh, I thought you did the math :P
I looked at mine out of curiosity after reading it, and wasn't very impressed. Just sayin
is there an easy way to find it?
or do I need to use data-explorer?
4:45 PM
Consider using 2D simplex/Perlin noise to create a heightmap, with which you can mold a landscape. Now add water at a certain level. You can't see what's under the water. Okay, now, do 3D simplex noise, and add "water" at a certain level. If this "water" is actually some sort of viewport culling, then you will end up with holes and voids in space. Which sounds like it'd be a ton of fun to fly around in.
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ I looked at the sitemap link, the site has a nearly identical page for EVERY FILE FORMAT IN ALL OF EXISTENCE
@NathanMerrill I used calculator, but I only had 19 to add up :/
@LegionMammal978 ... I don't know awnymore

@NathanMerrill It's for answers.
is it a bad idea to center headings in a page but not the text?
I think it is, a friend doesn't
5:31 PM
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ What kind of page? In some cases, it's expected to center heading-type pieces of text, in others it just looks weird or bad.
my blog :P I centered the site title and the post title, and now he wants me to center all headings
@LegionMammal978 Probably they fed a list of file extensions into a script and it spit out individually-customized pages for each one.
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ I think centering only the site and post titles is fine.
okay. thanks!
Does anyone know if we have discussed if answers can take chars instead of integers as input?
@Loovjo I think it's typical to allow that, but if in doubt, ask the OP.
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ is it spread or is it rest? I am confused.
> What I love about the spread operator is that you can use it as a function argument operator! When used in this way, it’s called the “rest operator”.
not really
the parameters are called rest parameters
5:48 PM
the operator is still spread
its Spread operator and first example showcases rest parameter
in fact, ES claims that the ... in rest parameter is not the same thing as ... in spread operator :P
so s/rest operator/rest paramter/ should do it, right?
thanks :P

6:18 PM
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ Cheddar, or Cheddar-Testing?
I started skyrim again, so I have ~10 minutes until the actual game starts
though testing branch is not updated, lemme do that
Or you can join the public, outdated workspace at ide.c9.io/schas002/cheddar.
Just ask for request access.

Petition to un-pin the "Graduation Perks update" from the starboard because it's been there for 10 days.
@TimmyD Petition to leave the update there for 3 more days.
@Upgoat I pulled from the Cheddar repo to my workspace to get the newest code.
What to do next?
npm install and npm run build?
@zʏᴀʙiɴ101 make sure you have tests/ branch. and check that out
o_o I don't.
How can I obtain that branch?
git checkout origin tests
@Quill Pathspec 'tests' did not match any file(s) known to git.
6:26 PM
git checkout origin/tests
@Quill Pathspec 'origin/tests' did not match any file(s) known to git.
don't you use a GUI for Git? Like GitHub Desktop or Sourcetree?
I use the command line.
I borked the repo.
6:31 PM
also note to all contributors, @CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ @EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ @MᴀʀsUʟᴛᴏʀ @Quill: beware not to push directly to master. Make a branch git checkout -b <change> master. And then make a PR or a merge, once you are sure there are no conflicts. Or if you're testing just pull the tests branch.
@Upgoat what is <change>
Cloned fresh copy.
Now installing Cheddar.
couldn't get grunt to work on windows but whateves ^
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ e.g. name it feature-switch-statements or hotfix-range-op
6:35 PM
@Upgoat try to prefix your branches with the issue number, makes everything look a little cleaner IMO
@Quill I'm thinking of doing hotfix-<issue>-<description> should I swap issue and hotfix iyo?
@Upgoat Obtained the tests branch!
What's of interest in that branch?
@Upgoat the order doesn't matter as long as the issue number is ordered, I guess
@zʏᴀʙiɴ101 making unit tests, etc.
So nothing for field tests.
6:37 PM
@zʏᴀʙiɴ101 once you have that branch merge from origin/master: git fetch origin/master; git merge origin/master
Nothing of interest for us here.
@zʏᴀʙiɴ101 ?
@Upgoat Testing manually, in the interpreter.
you can do that. do grunt install --method=path and then use cheddar command
Updated ide.c9.io/schas002/cheddar to version 0.1.0.
6:46 PM
@Upgoat you should be able to set permissions so it's not possible for others to push to master, no?
i dont think so
im okay with people pushing to master, just not directly
@zʏᴀʙiɴ101 can you fork c9 projects? like can i fork that?
@BaldBantha You can't. :(

That sounds like a very sad life.

@Bigtoes Use a phone line power harvester
Wait is minibits now minitoes?
@BaldBantha This presumes a land line, which is getting to be rare
@Quill yes pls. im very good actor. i got the main part in my local barn's play. It was just me and another goat though ;-;
@TimmyD Not in USA
7:04 PM
Very much no land line.
But yes, they're getting rare here in the US. I'm not sure I know anyone around my age or younger that has one.
Businesses still use them, but at home?
Approx. 1 in 5 households in the US were mobile-phone-only ... in 2008.
@Bigtoes We do, just don't use one
The percentage of mobile-phone-only was ticking up at around 2 percentage points every six months.
But stealing electricity (legal? IDK) from landlines is fun! (disclaimer: never done it yet)
@TimmyD It looks like around 37% in 2012
7:10 PM
we're getting a satellite dish put in at work to use 4G for our internet connection
@BaldBantha It's hard to imagine you'd get very much power from them though.
@Bigtoes In the US it's usually 48V DC
I'm not sure the amperage, though
Probably not much, considering I could lick bare phone lines with no ill effects :P
I'm sure there's still a way to setup a trickle-charger or something and hook up a USB cable to your cell.

Yeah, a trickle charge would probably work. Then again, it would be easier to just use a battery pack. A few AAs with a usb port :D
Woooo, power's back!
Well, thanks, power company, for ruining our conversation topic.

7:20 PM
"damn Comcast" is basically a cliche by now, isn't it?
"Comcast" when used as a curse word -- What the Comcast?! That stupid Comcasting idiot! I'm going to go down there and kick the Comcast outta him!
Wait, why does a goat even need internet? Shouldn't you be out eating hay while the years pass?
@TimmyD Blame Comcast and/or the power company.
I, on the other hand, love my Comcast Internet (Powered by Xfinity®).
So long as you're not in a jam-packed area (i.e., not an apartment complex), and you never need to talk with their customer service, they're pretty decent.
@Bigtoes ;-; no becus now o haev ches
Sorry, but I have no idea what that means.
7:25 PM
@TimmyD this is joke right?
I have 150mbps internets but I barely get 30 straight from the wall ;-;
Yea... the first time you have to talk to their customer service outweighs any decentness that's been stockpiling imo.
Works for me. 150Mbps for ~$99/mo, and that's the speed I get, too. Even on a Friday/Saturday evening or holiday.
Have you tried turning it off and back on again? ;-)
They don't offer anything over 50Mbps here :/
And it's the same price.
Here in Russia, everything is okay.
That's what their customer support said when they were doing maintenance
7:28 PM
The power didn't go away, and the internet is still working full speed.
@zʏᴀʙiɴ101 I had no internet issues in Japan either. It just worked, and worked well.
Yeah. I'm pretty sure they're only as cheap as they are here because CenturyLink is actually pretty competitive (they're starting to roll out gig), and USInternet has gig fiber in places, too.
Not out in the suburb I live, but places.
Yep. They've got a good lockdown here, so no reason to be competitive :/
No other cable providers, and Centurylink here is somehow worse.
Challenge idea: Visualise fragmentation of a drive.
Another idea: Defragment a drive.
Drives will actually be logs of actions given as input.
Better: fragment a drive
Preferably with a hammer.
7:32 PM
Oh, that reminds me. Have you seen the "CD placed on a high-speed Dremel" videos?
@TimmyD I think so. It starts resonating and shatters out?
@El'endiaStarman Noob. This should not take that many hits :P
It's really weird how a CD, which we think of as a relatively hard object, starts rippling like a liquid just before it shatters.
Very cool to watch though.
I watched the world do that in the 2011 earthquake in Japan. Weirdest thing ever.
The ground just shouldn't move in waves, ya know?
You were there?
@TimmyD Yeah, crazy. Slow Mo Guys?
7:36 PM
100km or so from Fukushima, yea.
We did humanitarian water/food flights for the next two months or so.
@El'endiaStarman Possibly. There was another one of some bloke doing it in his dorm room, but he would bump the discs off the Dremel before they shattered, so they went zooming across the floor. He built a ramp and they loop-de-looped off the ceiling. Etc.
Woah, that sounds awesome.
