Q: Beat Pure Regular Expressions at Validating ISO 8601 Dates

CrissovIn ValiDate ISO 8601 by RX, the challenge was to use only standard regular expressions to validate standard date formats and values (the former is a common job for RX, the latter was unusual). The winning answer used 778 bytes. This challenge is to beat that using any language of your choosing, b...

Any Visual Studio/Visual C++ power users in here?

@MartinBüttner Kinda? (I don't use VS anymore since I'm on Ubuntu. Also, it depends on your definition of 'power user'.)

@MarsUltor I'm trying to use standard library functions (like tellg() or fail() or a stream object) during a debugging session in the Watch window, but I'm getting "Function ... has no address". I'm assuming it's something like I'm missing debugging symbols for the standard library?

If it is, set it to static linking for Debug (not Release builds)
If it's wrong, I'm not sure. I didn't use Visual C++, but I may be able to try reproducing the problem on MonoDevelop.

@zyabin101 I've completely rewritten yesterday's code, and absolutely everything except one tiny thing works. Could you help me find the bug?

@wizzwizz4 Yup. Where's the link?

I started golfing it before realising there was a problem, this is the ungolfed version.
The other tab is taking ages to load...

[Introduction to Algorithms By Thomas Cormen] Is this book perfect for learning algorithms and improving problem solving?

If it's on Amazon, post a SE referral link.
Just in case.

Now if somebody clicks on that and buys something, Stack Exchange get money!

@wizzwizz4 Ah

Only about 5 cents... Something tiny like that. But it adds up!

@wizzwizz4 yeah

11:05 AM
@wizzwizz4 flags as scam

@Optimizer Flags what as scam?

@JesterTran Also, yes it is a good book for learning algorythms and complexity optimisation. I'm not sure about the problem solving part

Q: I came upon this encrypted riddle

SSS.remiIt is presented as a JSON file. LINK Can any of you solve it?

Problem solving isn't something you can really improve by reading. Each one of us is born with a different level of it, and it improves as you solve actual problem you come across

@zyabin101 Hi! changed your profile pic?
what is it supposed to be?

@Katenkyo Unipants, an unicorn looking like pants.

@zyabin101 Stnapinu sounds better.

@wizzwizz4 ಠ_ಠ

@zyabin101 hum... did you smoke your pantS?

11:40 AM
Does anyone know how in Ruby to, from two arrays, remove the first n elements if those elements are the same?

@zyabin101 Technically a unicorn. Unless you pronounce it u-ni-corn instead of yoo-nee-corn

@wizzwizz4 I prefer the yooooooouuuuu-neeeeee-coooorn

nrocinu still sounds better.

Speaking of which, a unicorn (@QPaysTaxes ) has join

A golfy solution :D
Or both, and then I can work on golfing it later
Both
Not a problem, for now.
My own solution currently is (0..x.size).map{|i|r,*x=x;s,*y=y;(x=[r]+x;y=[s]+y)if r!=s} but that is pretty long
Hm, not sure why I didn't think of this one: (x.shift;y.shift)while x[0]==y[0]

@Sherlock9 shifting is love,; shifting is life

This is also short (r,*x=x;s,*y=y)while x[0]==y[0]

if I may ask, what does r,*x=x does? unpack x, put the first element in r, and the remaining in x?

Ah, well that works. Thanks :D
@Katenkyo Yep

11:57 AM
so why don't you just write r,x=x?
Oh, to make x available to absorb the other results, nevermind
@QPaysTaxes Yeah, figured out my question was dumb ^^'
@QPaysTaxes Yep, _ is often used for trashing out values and is called a dummy :p
@QPaysTaxes depends of the language regarding this point, I know this from lua
(and lua never complain about anything :D)
@QPaysTaxes It doesn't mean we can't speak about generic knowledge :D
hum, I'm having a hard time golfing de-snakify a string

I was wondering why I was starting to get in troub le reading my code
then I realised I haven't indented it...
hum, I think i've unblocked me, I have a 3-depth ternary operator :D

12:16 PM
Why on earth didn't I ask you guys about this answer long ago :D

Because I suck at ruby
can someone tell me if the following would work ? ` e=arg[i]:sub(j,j)and arg[i+1]~=" "and arg[i]:sub(j+1,j+1) and e or arg[i]:sub(j,j)or e `
in lua
nevermind, spotted a nil value...

@MartinBüttner we we can easily convert high weights to low weights
thanks!

@Sherlock9 "old"

12:27 PM
Three months, my friend. I'd love another fractal path-finding challenge if you have an idea for one
We disallow such language directed at another person and I'm not fond of such language directed at oneself

@Sherlock9 sorry for that, deleted.
I just felt dumb because I can't even see that comparing a full string, and only one letter will change a lot of things -_-

I have a challenge that was closed as a duplicate of a related but different question. There are 4 reopen votes on the question, but it's not quite enough to reopen it. Anybody want to give it an analysis?

@wizzwizz4 I would let it closed

Why?

Even if it is different, only trivial modification are required to use an answer to the original question for this one

The latter is easier, and there are a lot of optimisation you could do for the former.
And yes, but the answer wouldn't really be competing.

12:33 PM
@wizzwizz4 you've already had this argument several times, could you please be quieter about it?

It would, as in both case, the main part is determining if a number is prime, and I think the optimal algorythm for both is the same regarding that point

I was actually going to post a link to the previous argument, because these points came up and I think I countered them quite well, convincing two additional people.

if people want to reopen it, they will

@muddyfish Yes, but all the while it's closed, nobody can answer it.
People who want to answer it can't at the moment.

@wizzwizz4 if it is closed, it means that answering it wouldn't give more value to this site anyway

12:36 PM
@Katenkyo But if it shouldn't be closed... Now we're meta-arguing.

@wizzwizz4 it is closed, meaning it should be closed, if people reopen it, there it would mean that it shouldn't have been closed

Can anyone determine why this answer is wrong on the last test case?

but actually, it is closed a dupe, and there's nothing to say about that

@Katenkyo Four people say "it shouldn't be closed". Five people say "it should be closed".

@wizzwizz4 which means "it should be closed" :)
also, don't take it personnaly, I'm only giving my PoV

12:40 PM
@Katenkyo We are meta-arguing, and we shouldn't be. The system is what it is.

1:29 PM
All user-facing software at least. OS-level and server stuff is usually not included in those ime.

^ I don't mean OS-level or server stuff

@Geobits That's what I implied, I didn't count scripts etc in

Would it sound better if I said "web and application", instead?

I'd try to not use "application" twice in the same line if it could be helped.

@ZachGates I think only saying "Build and deploy multipurpose front-end applications" or something like that would be better
(even if front end is very badly used there)
(but you get the idea)
