Is that a dupe of this?

No.

That looks like one of the most trivial questions ever posted in PPCG.SE

Check out some of Seadrus's questions >_>

@MarsUltor I wonder if Henrikson O'Brien is related to Conor. :P

@AlexA. Must be unrelated. The last name is spelled completely differently.

Where did you find that?

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ The link that @MarsUltor had posted before editing.

Random article excerpt:

@AlexA. ? It's still the same link

@MarsUltor You've edited the TIL link twice. :/

No, it started with some roleplay thing, then it was DeviantArt, now it's SoundCloud.

No, it's three links

Oh, I didn't realize the letters were separate links. Don't mind me, just bad at hovering.

@Mego TIL you could do that

Clearly I require a hovercraft.

I'm not sure any but hummingbirds can.

Hover = stay in one spot in the air

They can do something similar enough to hovering

Flight is the main mode of locomotion used by most of the world's bird species. Flight assists birds while feeding, breeding and avoiding predators. This article discusses the mechanics of bird flight, with emphasis on the varied forms of bird's wings. The specifics of hovering, take-off and landing are also examined. Additional adaptations of bird's bodies relating to their flying ability are covered. Finally, theories on the evolution of bird flight are discussed. == Basic mechanics of bird flightEdit == === LiftEdit === The fundamentals of bird flight are similar to those of aircraft...

Why can't I flag in the first X minutes of this post?

Oh yea, I've seen some waterbirds do the windhovering thing. It's weird to watch.

windhovering?

I'm guessing it's where birds fly into the wind at the same rate it's blowing past them, thus "hovering".

6:20 PM
They fly into a headwind just right to stay in one spot while looking for prey.

^

huh
interesting

I do that all the time

Then why do you need a hoverboard?

If I hover long enough in the grocery store, I can spot the broccoli

6:21 PM
mmm steamed broccoli...

I'm glad my grocery store isn't that windy.

Steamed? More like roasted.

@MarsUltor Nope, just regular windows with parental control

is there a shortcut for the constructor turning its arguments into instance variables in ruby? i.e.
def initialize(foo, bar, baz)

end

def initialize(@foo, @bar, @baz) # tried this, doesn't work

A: in Ruby can I automatically populate instance variables somehow in the initialize method?

MischaYou can use instance_variable_set like this: params.each do |key, value| self.instance_variable_set("@#{key}".to_sym, value) end

Lke that?

I was hoping to do it with the actual arguments

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ Oh well. Are you allowed to bring your own laptop? (Also, my school isn't very strict about enforcing rules, so a lot of people have different OSes/non-school laptops/disabled restrictions)

@MarsUltor Nope :(

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ Also, ಠ_ಠ you're on SE at school

well hey
so am i

6:42 PM
@MarsUltor I think many (perhaps even most) of the folks who frequent The Nineteenth Byte sign into PPCG and/or SE chat during work or school.

I just finished my implementation of a red-black tree.

I made a strawpoll about it once

@crayzeedude I probably would as well, except for the fact I have no idea why my laptop can't detect the school network.

@PhiNotPi \o/

That... took longer than expected.

6:43 PM
@AlexA. Do you have a link/approximate results?

also! for those who weren't there for the initial discussion, i'm writing a CJam interpreter in C#. should i use C#'s Stack type or stick with List<object> to handle the stack?

@PhiNotPi I don't know, it certainly didn't sound very straightforward when you and El'endia were talking about it last night. I'm impressed that you finished it as quickly as you did.

@crayzeedude Does List<T> have an append function?

@crayzeedude Use Stack, it's faster and guaranteed to work correctly
@zyabin101theHated Yes

@MarsUltor No, the strawpoll.me link is lost in the sands of time (i.e. the TNB transcript). IIRC there was only one person who said they never sign in at work/school.

6:45 PM
Does List<T> have a pop function?

The sample size was ~10

@zyabin101theHated it has an Add function

@zyabin101theHated No

Then use Stack.

Now that I have a red-black tree... what do I do with it?

6:46 PM
@crayzeedude Pop = return first element, remove from list

@PhiNotPi Put presents under it

well the Add function basically does the same thing as Append

@crayzeedude The Stack equivalent is Push

and i'm trying to keep consistency between my interpreter and aditsu's so that i know what the heck i'm doing
@MarsUltor yeah yeah
currently i am using the Stack type

6:51 PM
@MarsUltor except i'm translating Java to C#?

@crayzeedude I know. There is probably a tool to do that. (Also, why are you translating it to C#?)

yesterday, by crayzeedude
so, i'm in the progress of making a sort of graphical implementation of the CJam desktop interpreter

6:58 PM
@crayzeedude Can't you do that in Java?

(follow the link and read the chat for context)

@crayzeedude But. Why port it?

This is one of my favorite regexs I've written: /([)}{(])(\1|[[\]])*/g

@MarsUltor so i can remove my graphical interpreter's dependency on cjam.jar and Java

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ Bracket/brace/paren pair matcher?

7:00 PM
planning on packing the ported interpreter with the GUI once i finished it

@Mego ..........dang, that ending.

@crayzeedude Can't you do the GUI in Java?

@MarsUltor No, that's impossible in regex.

Fun game, though.

It matches runs of the same bracket type with [ or ] interspersed.

7:01 PM
Doesn't that just replace a java dependency with a .net dependency though?

@MarsUltor yeah, yeah. thing is i'm not as familiar with Java as i am with C# and such
@Geobits sadly, yes.

@crayzeedude I may be able to do it

@crayzeedude imo java is the lesser of those two evils :P

@crayzeedude I mean, adding a GUI to the existing version will be way faster than porting, plus it'll still be cross-platform

@MarsUltor you do have a point there

7:03 PM
I wish it was possible to keep upgrading everything and just go further and further.

@El'endiaStarman ?

Talking about the game Learn to Fly.

i guess it's because i'm just more familiar with C# and so i'm more inclined to use it for personal coding projects
or something

@El'endiaStarman So do I. :(

@crayzeedude I've used C# for a year. It's nice for GUI stuff, but Qt can do that as well
@crayzeedude Java is really similar to C#

7:04 PM
indeed it is

PowerShell can be pretty competitive if you can get slightly outside of the challenges where esolangs do well. Extremely loose casting, lots of shortcut operators, and a flexible variable initialization, all give it an edge over things like C++ or JavaScript.
Also, interesting to note, on the UUID challenge, PowerShell actually beat Pyth.

7:28 PM
> give it an edge over things like C++
That's... not saying much >_>

Well, but it's true.

You know what gives Rust a golfing edge over the other non-esolangs?
Absolutely nothing. :(

What should the message be when there aren't enough elements in the stack?

How about "not enough elements in stack"?
