Did they do away with the review count indicators next to the review button? I have one item that I can review on both Board and Card Games SE and PPCG SE, but there's no indicator telling me I have one item to review on the main page.

Q: Are we then yet?

JordanI'm a time traveler, and I'm obsessed with the passage of time. I particularly love the moments when the clock hands pass 12, or when 23:59 becomes 00:00, or when I get to flip to the next page of my calendar. Please write for me a program to show me how far I am from the last such moment and th...

I really like the cooperation that's started to go on in the polyglot language recently
because you can't win by making the last post (the winner is the second-last post), people have been giving advice about what the easiest way to continue is

2:22 PM
@Rainbolt I still get review counts on the main page, but they are often higher or lower than on the review page. When they are higher it may be because the reviews I have already done (but need input from more people) are counted on main but not on the review page. When they are lower I assume it's just caching, and it doesn't seem to be a new thing.
I find that refreshing the page doesn't help

Okay. I have a main meta post about that, but I thought maybe it was obsolete now. I guess it's still a problem
I don't even pay attention to the number anymore. Too much disappointment.

"[ClF3] is, of course, extremely toxic, but that's the least of the problem. It is hypergolic with every known fuel, and so rapidly hypergolic that no ignition delay has ever been measured. It is also hypergolic with such things as cloth, wood, and test engineers, not to mention asbestos, sand, and water — with which it reacts explosively. [...] If, however, this coat is melted or scrubbed off, and has no chance to reform, the operator is confronted with the problem of coping with a metal-fluorine fire. For dealing with this situation, I have always recommended a good pair of running shoes." — Iwillnotexist Idonotexist 7 hours ago
Sounds lovely.

It's been a while since I heard the word toxic used correctly, and not to describe someone who is having a bad day on Overwatch.
That was a little forced. I like talking about Overwatch :P

It fitted into the context. I think you got away with it...

I always get this sinking feeling that mods can see who is typing, even though I have asked many times before and been told they can't

2:34 PM
@TimmyD All of the references in that link are beautiful

@TimmyD Man, that is some nasty stuff

@Rainbolt Reminds me of a meme of Salar de Uyuni, the largest salt flat in the world and one of the saltiest places on Earth. Next to Overwatch players, of course.

You want to burn someone and then burn their ashes for good measure? ClF3

hi all

2:39 PM
@betseg meanwhile verison is doibg $180/mo for 1GB
No I did not typo that

Lol, I pay $50 for 50GB on mobile.

since when is "doibg" not a typo? :-P

@Downgoat What sort of plan are you on? The wife and I are on unlimited minutes, unlimited texts, 10GB shared data, and we pay like $110 after fees and whatnot, and we're on Verizon.

@mınxomaτ $180/mo for 1GB is speed. Your $50 for 50GB is data limit.

@TimmyD Yeah but he is on verison

2:42 PM
Idk they are 4 lines w/ unlimited text talk but it's still super ridiculous

oh what????

@GabrielBenamy 1GB is not speed. 1Gb would be speed.

nevermind, then

@mınxomaτ Oh, good point.

@mınxomaτ technically 1Gbps would be speed but it's all relative

2:43 PM
You omitted the ps, I just went along with it

@TimmyD that seems like a lot!
so do americans text now?
for years they held out

$300 (a month) here gets you unlimited (international) calls, texts and 4G data for three phones. Which is reasonable, and actually cheap if you do split it between three people.

Anonymous
@mınxomaτ Only Timmy uses the PS anyway

@Rainbolt Do you mean being able to read your messages before you press send, or just seeing an indicator saying "Rainbolt is typing"?

@mınxomaτ is that a cell phone price?

2:45 PM
Yes

(I can't see either of those, by the way)

it's quite a lot more expensive than the UK for example

@trichoplax good cover ;)

does it include a subsidy on the price of the phone itself?

2:46 PM
or do you but that separately?

@Lembik Yes. A new phone every 12 months.

@mınxomaτ ah.. so it might all be hidden in the iphone price

@Lembik It's still pretty cheap. I mean you can just use one of the three sims to replace your residential internet connection.

in the UK you are always better off buying the phone outright yourself if you can trust yourself not to smash it
@mınxomaτ you mean equivalent to unlimit calls and data?

And I very much doubt that an equivalent plan is even available in the UK.

2:47 PM
sure there are unlimited plans in the UK
or is there some other aspect that is special?

@Lembik We're slowly getting there. No where near as integrated as in Europe (at least the UK). I was in England for an ACM conference back in 2005 and all the advertisements on television or print included "Text such-and-such for more information" -- in the US, people were still figuring out that you didn't necessarily need "www" when typing in a web address.

@Lembik With international calls, up to three separate numbers and un-throttled 4G (even if you use a few hundred GB a month)?
@Lembik I don't see any unlimited plan for data on there.

@mınxomaτ I think 3 does a plan with international calls to a couple of dozen countries. I assume your deal isn't really to all countries

> Speed restrictions apply to our Always On data after 6GB of data usage

@mınxomaτ no sorry... it was just to indicate some prices. In fact there is no truly unlimited data even on your landline in the UK. When they say "unlimited" they write in small letters that they don't really mean it

2:50 PM
I don't think you understand what I mean by unlimited
I actually mean no limits whatsoever.

@mınxomaτ do they really not throttle it if you appear to be running a commercial service, for example?

Anonymous
Unlimited doesn't mean "throttled after going over the soft cap"

@Mego it does in the UK :)

@Mego It sadly does pretty much everywhere.
@Lembik You can do what you want with it.
That's why it's so expensive.

In the UK "unlimited" means "as much as you can use at the rate we decide from minute to minute"

Anonymous
2:51 PM
@Lembik Well, in the UK, bin means garbage can and flat means apartment, so why would "unlimited" be used correctly?

It's not used any better in the US...

Anonymous
Silly Brits, not understanding freedom :P

@mınxomaτ that is cool if they really don't cap it at all. You are right that if you want truly unlimited data it is more expensive in the UK
@Mego Booo :)

@Lembik at least not my generation. We use snapchat for texting

@Lembik I doubt that it would even be available for mobile at all.

Anonymous
Technically you would still be subjected to throttling if you go over the maximum capacity of the network, but that would be because you're trying to shove too much data through not enough bandwidth. That's an entirely different problem.

Anonymous
@Downgoat @DJMcMayhem

@DJMcMayhem :O :O you're on the front page of travis! ^

Anonymous
Ninja'd

2:53 PM
@Mego it seems only 3 offers unlimited data in the UK

@Mego Bandwidth is bandwidth. It's either throttled or not. If not, you can use the full bandwidth.

3 is a telecoms company
@Downgoat interesting.. do people falsely believe it is more private?

@Lembik This has usage restrictions.

@Downgoat Do you mean you write messages in alphabites and then send photos of them, instead of using the on screen keyboard?

@mınxomaτ oh does it?!

2:54 PM
@Lembik They just use slightly smaller small print

Anonymous
@trichoplax Nobody ever said that generation was reasonable :P

@Lembik Yes. If you tether you have a 2GB cap.

I am reading "All you can eat data allows you to use as much as the Internet or consumer as much data as you wish without worrying about the cost or having to search for hidden and unfair “fair use policies”. "
@mınxomaτ ah.. tethering!
how do they tell if you are tethering?

And it's still only one line. With the $300, you can actually replace your DSL with one SIM, replace your office DSL (or something else) with the other and leave the third in your phone. They'll not interfere.

sure but $300 is three times $100 :)

2:56 PM
You can also host text APIs and stuff (usually unlimited text plans have a 30k or so limit).

that's the price I was really comparing
is the speed any good in practice?

@Lembik The phone tells them IIRC. Pretty sure you can "fix" that if you're rooted though ;)

@Geobits ah :)

@Lembik About 100Mbps.

@Lembik I'm not sure. Even if they can't tell for sure a company can throttle your connection without giving reason, so they wouldn't have to go through the courts.

2:57 PM
@mınxomaτ is that real speed or the quoted speed?

The real.

what is the quoted speed?

Quoted is some imaginary bs like 150

so it's a little slow for a permanent connection isn't it?
I mean for a business for example

@Lembik i believe so

2:58 PM
What?
Many businesses struggle to get more than 20Mbps.

ah that's bad

Depends on what type of business. Unless you have a lot of computers, most aren't doing traffic-heavy things.

so are there many areas with slow landline data speed but fast 4g?

And it's 100 either way, btw.

@trichoplax no I mean just like raw text messages.

2:59 PM
I assume 100Mbps is 4g?

@Downgoat I wasn't being serious :)

Well 4G is a heck of a lot easier to build than fibre.

@mınxomaτ yes. but it's all supply and demand

Actually it's long term.

in the UK 4g is very poor in some areas and those will be similar areas to the ones with poor landline data speeds
also the wireless web is a pain

3:00 PM
You can't possibly respond to demand if you need to get thousands of permits and invest tons of money and time to build either infrastructure. These are 10+ year plans.

for complicated latency reasons

@Lembik I'll trade UK infrastructure problems for US ones any day :P

@Geobits right!
I don't think I would want to rely on the wireless web
it's just slow

I have like a 10ms ping over 4G here.
The towers basically switch directly into the city's fibre.

@mınxomaτ I went to talk once by a Google guy who explained why the web is so slow over 3/4g

3:02 PM
Of course now I have fibre and no longer care. But when I'm visiting my parents, who can't even get 6Mbps. Then I'm really grateful for my 50GB 4G :-)

my internet goes down when it rains, but at least I live in CA where it pretty much doesn't rain

:)
@mınxomaτ out of interest.. what do you do with 50GB? That's a lot web pages :)

Streaming, managing a few gigs in git repos etc.
It adds up.

unless you are just watching TV?

Download a driver bundle: 200MB gone. Need to refetch a VM image? There go another 2GB...

3:03 PM
cool.... I have a coding problem :)
but I know that's not relevant here :)

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ Comcast I presume

Still enjoying my free 3 GB. Yum.

Tin can is still tasier than 3GB

So it's the 14th, and I've used 13.4 GB of my mobile plan. I'll probably end up at around 35ish

yay for almost pi

3:08 PM
@Lembik What is it?

I had a dream last night that I had to explain COW to someone

@Mego ok... so I thought I would attempt to implement the permanent myself using this formula en.wikipedia.org/wiki/…. My naive implementation looks like bpaste.net/show/488a066a1768
oh the parity line is horrible :( I should fix that.
it is correct at least :)

> Hey, kids! Do you dislike popular science articles? Are you a fan of quantum mechanics? What about jokes that go on far longer than they should? If so, come get yourself a big bowl of Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal!

ignoring that horrible part.. I want to speed it up using Gray codes. The idea is that instead of iterating over all the +-1 tuples as I have , we do it by changing one entry at a time
and this means we can avoid an entire loop in the code
I am just not sure how to do it

Anonymous
Well, I have some good news and some bad news for you

3:12 PM
go on

Anonymous
The bad news is that I don't know how to do it either

Anonymous
The good news is, you're not alone!

thanks ! :_)
I feel better
but you have inspired me to clean up the horrible parts of that code at least :)

Anonymous
It's not worse than Seriously's code

Anonymous
So you have that going for you

3:14 PM
oh! thank goodness

Seriously?

Didn't see that coming :P

@Downgoat no, just shitty infrastructure nearby

@Dennis do you mind if I pick your brains on this?
I can iterate over the gray codes happily
I have to use them though to speed up the code
I am not sure how to do that

I've never used Gray codes.

3:19 PM
oh.. how did you make your code so fast without them?

Sometimes my code is grey, depending on the IDE's highlighting options, but never Gray.

@Dennis if you don't use them you end up with m^2 2^m operations instead of m 2^m right?

I mean, I learned about Gray codes in a electronics principles class fifteen years ago, but I haven't had a practical use for them since then. And the only practical use for them even then was passing a test.

@Lembik I used the popcnt instuction in my answer. If it's less efficient than Gray codes, I doubt the difference will be big.

@Geobits :O I thought you were American! How can yoy use King George's evil spelling :P

3:22 PM
> yoy

@Dennis that's very interesting. So popcnt counts the number of set bits. How do you use it ?
I can see codegolf.stackexchange.com/a/97069/9206 uses Gray codes

Because gray is a dumb way to spell it, that's all. I don't often use the British spelling for things, but...

You were near to make a correct sentence.

@Downgoat wait wat there's 2 ways to spell grey?
holy crap TIL

3:23 PM
@Lembik I know, and when talking about the code, I use it right. When talking about the color... that's different.

@Lembik Can't talk right now. I'm getting ready for work.

colour! :)
@Dennis ok no problem
maybe another time

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ There's the evil way and the american way

and the Trump way :)

Surely that falls into one or both categories >_>

3:24 PM
@Lembik That the incourrect spelling ouf color :P

:) How do you spell labelled?

@Downgoat That's the most British spelling of of I've ever seen.

“incourrect” too

@Lembik lanelked :P

@Downgoat I am not sure your criticism is etymologically sound :)

3:26 PM
Besides, everyone knows it should be coulor.

@Downgoat blame-houves

Color is the most correct phonetically

actually there are many more differences between US and British English that most people reaslise

@Lembik Several thousand miles worth.

@TuxCopter well.. English isn't a phonetic language!
@Geobits all the domestic things are different
nappy bin === diaper pail etc.

3:27 PM
@TuxCopter why is that evil

@TuxCopter ? I have lost your thread

@Geobits yeah, it's american and trump

There are way too many exceptions for sounds in English

ah... I had a typo :)

er/re, or/our, aluminum vs that horrendous aluminium

3:28 PM
@TimmyD English spelling is 100% insane

Aluminium is just... I don't even have a good joke for that. It's awful.

sieve the icing sugar.. in the US English?

But aluminium is correct in French

plug into the mains
in US English
set the crockery out

Haha I once had to do presentation on aluminum and because of hooves I had to eventually have to do aluminium and teacher took off point :(

3:29 PM
use the cutlery

It was justified though

@TuxCopter Nobody ever said the French are right :P

it's all different!

@Geobits ಠ_ಠ

(about this)

3:30 PM
well americans are alt-right these days :(

> I had to eventually have to do aluminium

20/20 grammar

@Lembik Just a small, really loud portion of us.

@Lembik nah, most americans are rather nice, it's just that the racist alt-right ones stand out

"1812, coined by English chemist Sir Humphry Davy (1778-1829), from alumina, name given 18c. to aluminum oxide, from Latin alumen "alum" (see alum). Davy originally called it alumium (1808), then amended this to aluminum, which remains the U.S. word, but British editors in 1812 further amended it to aluminium, the modern preferred British form, to better harmonize with other metallic element names (sodium, potassium, etc.)."
seems both are reasonable
do you say sodum?
@Geobits loud and with full control of the military, nukes, laws and economy

3:32 PM
@Downgoat is alt-right like pressing the alt key and the right arrow key?

just saying...

@Lembik "mains" is slowly making inroads to refer to the electrical grid. I would say that term is more common in technology and audio/visual fields and jobs than with mainstream people in the US.

@ConorO'Brien There are alt keys at the right of the keyboard in French keyboards

@TimmyD Oh I didn't know that
what about cutlery?

So it's maybe that

3:32 PM
seems some americans know it and some don't

@Lembik Not even close. You'd be surprised how terribly inefficient our government is. There's no single group with "full control" of anything.

@TuxCopter oh, on most keyboards too

@TuxCopter there are everywhere

@ConorO'Brien it is imagining weird-ass story and posting it on specific website starting with letter 'b' and posting it on Facebook and your cult followers will pass it on

@Geobits here's hoping for 100% inefficiency!

3:33 PM
or pressing the right alt-key

@Geobits but trump genuinely has sole and complete authority to fire nukes
the power does not lie with generals or congress or the courts

@Lembik "Cutlery," from my perspective, usually refers to fancy or formal dining, like how "china" is used to refer to the fancy plates and cups that are only used for special holidays.

Does make sense for Radiation Hardening challenges, or should it be ? Two of the existing challenges have , but I don't think it quite fits, the tag is a bit vague.

@Lembik He'll never do it though. He just talks tough to rile the crowds. I know people say he's crazy, but he's not that damn crazy.

I wouldn't eat grilled cheese sandwiches with "cutlery"

3:34 PM
Also, that's only 2 challenges out of all 5 or 6.

@Geobits I hope you are right but we don't have much evidence of his sanity

@TimmyD "Cutlery" here refers to knives used for prep/cooking, and not anything you'd eat with.

@Geobits the fact he refuses to take intelligence briefings, for example, shows that he has no plan to ...be normal

@Lembik He cares about himself too much to be remembered as the guy that nuked China.

@TimmyD don't you eat grilled cheese sandwiches with your hands :) ?
@Geobits the problem is that he seems incredibly vain and easy to provoke
if someone says "You are not man enough to nuke them"

3:36 PM
I agree he's not a "normal" politician, but firing nukes is a step too far, and even after giving the order, there are absolutely ways to stop them from firing.

what does he do?

@Lembik I read on YouTube commet that "he has rejected intellegence his entire life, why do you expect him to start now" :P (pls no flag)

@Lembik Some folks, myself included, cut the sandwich in half before consuming.

@Geobits I believe there are not ways to stop him without acting illegally
@TimmyD aha :)
@Geobits I read an article just last week on the law around firing nukes

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ Things are different in the US. They have to pay thumb tax and they aren't allowed to walk on the pavement.

3:37 PM
thumb tax?

@Geobits the sole authority was put in the hands of the president decades ago in order to prevent trigger happy generals from doing it. This was on the assumption the president would be sane
@Downgoat why not flag! :)

D:

@TuxCopter wait arn't you french
so you use the "evil" way?

@Lembik Ok. Say you're the person who actually fires them, or even the guy who relays orders to the guy. The president is being crazy or stupid and says "fire ze missiles!". Sure, not doing it is "acting illegally", but could you actually do it?

@Geobits I couldn't but I am not a senior military official

3:39 PM
@trichoplax TIL "pavement" in England means the sidewalk

I am just a loser who can't work out how to use the Gray codes

@Geobits idk on TV shows they do

@Geobits And Australia is all "WTF, mate?"

@Geobits in practice he is unlikely to fire nukes.. but he may well start wars just out of vanity

@Lembik I was in the military for some time, and if there's one thing everyone knows, it's that you don't do crazy stupid things just because your boss tells you to.

3:40 PM
putin is already starting to play him though obvious flattery

@Lembik Oh sure, now that I can agree with. Small scale wars, at the least. But most presidents do that, for some definition of "vanity".

@Geobits do they explain the consequences of disobeying orders? I hate to say it but... guantanamo teaches us that lots of professional people do terrible things if told to

Well, maybe not "most", but it's not unprecedented at all.

guantanamo and the gas chambers

@Lembik Beating a prisoner is not the same as firing off a missile to kill thousands/millions of people.

3:41 PM
@Downgoat specific website starting with bu?

@Geobits no.. (it wasn't just beating.. forced anal rehydration as a form of punishment is pretty extreme for example)
by no I mean I agree

But yes, they explain the consequences. The consequences of not firing them would probably be a discharge, maybe with a sentence in jail. The consequences of firing them would more likely be a war crime hearing, followed by execution.
You know, plus the whole WW3 thing

surely you can't be prosecuted for firing nukes under order from the president!

@Lembik Tell that to the guys in Nuremburg

the whole WW3 thing is bad
@Geobits they lost the war!
sure if the US loses the war they would be prosecuted
but not if they win

3:44 PM
@ConorO'Brien no br

and US presidents have killed 10s of thousands of people regularly
I am not sure I see the difference

> I read on YouTube commet that ... (pls no flag)

how many people have died as a consequence of Bushes wars?

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ In the US "drawing pins" are called "thumb tacks". Not really a tax, just a common source of confusion

The reflected binary code (RBC), also known as Gray code after Frank Gray, is a binary numeral system where two successive values differ in only one bit (binary digit). The reflected binary code was originally designed to prevent spurious output from electromechanical switches. Today, Gray codes are widely used to facilitate error correction in digital communications such as digital terrestrial television and some cable TV systems. == Name == Bell Labs researcher Frank Gray introduced the term reflected binary code in his 1947 patent application, remarking that the code had "as yet no recognized...

Yep, it's Duck Tape brand duct tape :/

"duck" tape refers to cloth-backed tape. "duct" tape is foil-backed

still doesn't help my code though

Sure it does

Yeah, we sometimes used the foil-backed kind to tape up bullet holes in planes as a quick patch >_>
But both are "duct tape".
We usually called the foil kind speed tape to differentiate.

@Mego When you say "we", do you mean our species? :P

Some subset of member of our species, yes.

@Downgoat haha that's great

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ Why?

3:51 PM
@mbomb007 I'm not sure shrinking the font counts as golfing :P

In french gray is 'gris'

@TuxCopter bc you're not american and you listed 2 options, only 1 of which isn't american

@trichoplax Hmm. Uses fewer bytes of video memory to display, right? >_>

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ I was talking about the british grey

@mbomb007 More seriously: useful info - thanks!

3:52 PM
@TuxCopter In Danish, gris means pig

wot

@mbomb007 how?

Pigs are grey, conspiracy theory confirmed

@KritixiLithos In the US, gris is what drips off a pig when you cook it.

@Geobits wow
A friend and I just discovered a way to rapid fire snowballs (half a stack per second)

3:56 PM
@TimmyD Historically it made sense, as what is called the "sidewalk" in the US was paved in the UK, while the road ("pavement" in the US"?) was covered in tarmac. But now many UK walkways are covered in tarmac or concrete and have no paving, so pavement makes less sense but has stuck.

In Minecraft?

@VoteToClose A snowball machinegun is not really useful
If snowballs gave damage it would be though

@TuxCopter [citation needed]

@TuxCopter breaks full diamond armor in less than ten seconds

@VoteToClose Gitterclick?

@trichoplax "Most" roadways are asphalt, while sidewalks are concrete (in the US).

@VoteToClose crap

@VoteToClose pls send teh codez

@VoteToClose Mods...

Yeah - it's using a client mod called "FastPlace" and "Timer".
You use so many snowballs though

3:58 PM
These are cheats

@TuxCopter Yes.
