IANAL but I think that will be a non-issue for the TIO accounts I'm planning to implement. The server will only store a hash of the username and/or email address provided by the user.

@Dennis Unless you can heavily invest your time in security, then think twice about accounts.

Also depends where your server is, @Dennis. When I had QPixel running, it was on an EC2 instance in Northern Ireland, so I didn't have to worry about COPPA at all.

New York, unfortunately.
@TheBitByte Twice? I've been thinking about this for months.

@Dennis Well then, better be prepared to read a couple dozen Security.SE posts, Troy Hunt' blog (troyhunt.com, this guy is super famous), and have monthly checkups/audits, and, so no.

@Calvin'sHobbies well? :P

8:09 PM
@TheBitByte Why would Dennis need to go through all of that, if it's just a dumb account that only has a hash of the username?
It's not like he's processing credit card information.

I'm under the impression that it is just for handling permalinks
also Dennis knows his shit so I'm not too worried

@TheBitByte I know my crypto, and the server won't store any PII in cleartext. It's basically a glorified cookie. I'm not sure what kind of audits that would require.

@TimmyD This reminds me of the quote: ""Arguing that you don't care about the right to privacy because you have nothing to hide is no different than saying you don't care about free speech because you have nothing to say."

Q: Puzzle - Determine which of the variable addresses belong to global/local/heap variable

WillLurI have the following Puzzle to solve and I'm not really sure how I could do that. It says: There's an Ubunutu Linux C program which outputs the adresses of variables. v1: 0xa156128 v2: 0xff97410c v3: 0xf750e34b v4: 0x804a0c0 I know that the program uses no shared memory and at least one of th...

So?

8:13 PM
No clue how that's relevant to the discussion.

unless s.include???

@TheBitByte I'm not following.

^^ Beautiful piece of Ruby code

Ruby loves its punctuation

8:16 PM
@Dennis Fair enough. DELETE FROM tbl_users, followed by cleaning logs, seems to be the safest way.

@TheBitByte Yes, I understand the context and the sentiment behind it. I fail to understand how that's relevant here.

My confusion remains. TIO != mass surveillance.

It also makes no sense. If I knew I would never have anything to say I wouldn't care about free speech

@TimmyD The point is, saying "but that's small data, nobody would bother to hack that, right?" is what leads us to dozens of issues in the end.

But there's no data to hack

8:18 PM
Haha! Just posted my first ever robbers answer!

@DrMcMoylex You're under arrest
3

@TheBitByte Have you read at all what I have been writing? I won't be storing any data that could be hacked, even if the server is breached.

@Dennis So, wait, you're not storing any data, how do I make an account? That's an awesome invention!

You do know what a hash is, yes?
Not a novel idea.

8:23 PM
You know what a side-channel attack is, right?

We're in 2016, and being paranoid about website security is okay.

-.-

@TheBitByte You have no idea what your talking about. If the server was hacked, the only thing any attackers get is a string that looks something like "abjr2sk63-ahovrt793hw-znk5hk88r".

@TheBitByte Paranoia is a disease, not a way of life.

@DrMcMoylex I know very well what I'm talking about. I've seen too many MD5 and SHA1 websites. Too many to assume that even the best person in the world might make mistakes in web security. With the amount of services getting hacked nowadays, nothing is out of the question, almost nothing is impossible. "But but it's only a hash right?"

8:26 PM
But again, there's no data to hack

@TimmyD don't even bother.

@TimmyD Lots of websites have implemented hashes incorrectly. It's not like a hash is a magic solution to everything. If you think I'm joking around, just see the number of data breaches this year alone, and you won't call me paranoid after that.

This is stupid. I'm done

If you're just going to continue with the premise that I have no idea what I'm doing, there's no point in further discussion. If your stance is that no website should have user accounts because web security is hard, well... also not sure what to respond to that. If you don't want to create a TIO account, don't. It won't be needed to use the service.

@DrMcMoylex hahaha
@quartata that sounds great
pls make
also, preferably different classes or at least customizable roles

8:32 PM
@El'endiaStarman another twist on the Bernoulli factory concept: a coin in which the flips are not independent, so the result of the previous flip determines the probability of the current flip (so the coin has two sets of probabilities).

No no. I want someone else to make it and spend all their money on servers

@Dennis That isn't my premise at all. I was just telling you to be careful with security, which I hope you will be. That's all, now let's move on, shall we? :D
@quartata Only if I get to keep all profits. :P

I just made my first legit V quine. (Including the stupid trailing newline)

@noɥʇʎPʎzɐɹC I don't see the source code there unless I'm missing something.

8:40 PM
@TheBitByte are you new or something?

@Dennis storing just the hash of the username sounds like an interesting idea, but when someone logs in, you won't display their username?

@Poke he's been here for a month or so, but he was gone for a while

or will you store it in localstorage once they log in?

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ I kinda mean "to the internet"
the heck is he arguing about

8:42 PM
OMG Calvin is Calvin again!!! #MCCA
2

MMCA?
@Poke idfk

Don't you mean #MCGA?

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ make calvin calvin again

^

8:42 PM
I redesigned my status page does it work on window display and all

nice

@Downgoat :O HOST PPCG TF2 SERVER

:O I CAN

i have linux on server tho

@Downgoat love 90s sites :D

8:44 PM
@Downgoat ..ok? that shouldn't matter

tf2 server support debain?

how much resrouces does it use?

> Debian init script

i have like shittiest VPS

8:44 PM
@Downgoat idk
> Approximately 4.49GB hard-drive space (for a barebones server with no custom maps, sounds, etc.)
that's what we want

i have like 512gb memory
mariadb takes 4/5 of that

ok youre good
wtf WP
@Downgoat making room for this

 PPCG TF2 Server - Shut down now

This room is kept for posterity, but the server has been shut ...
@Downgoat can you the messages about the server into ^?

V is great for C&R because nobody knows it, lol

what's the deal with this "placeholder" answer? codegolf.stackexchange.com/a/99479/2867

hih guys
do u guys have ideas
for an iOS app

8:51 PM
@DrMcMoylex so is cheddar :D
@Oliver yes
i have lots

@Downgoat What

i am not sharing
app idea are very valuable in 2016

...

Anonymous
I'm really not sure what answer you expected

@Maltysen That's pretty much what I had in mind. No need to fetch data from the server that the client already has.

8:53 PM
@Downgoat Cheddar is slightly more readable than V

yea thats true
and ive actually written sufficient docs on most primitive features

@Dennis the one thing is you don't get to display like "By: bobsuperhaxor69" when someone clicks on a permalink

I never meant to do that.

One of the users over on vi.se started learning it, so I'll probably try to actually make good docs now, haha

cool!
congrats also

8:54 PM
whats vi.se
oh ok

My second favorite site

a SE site for vi/vim
hey @ArtOfCode

@Downgoat Cheddar's syntax is a weird mix of Python, JavaScript, C# and Haskell, so it's easy to crack

sup

8:55 PM
> weird
;___________; y u sai dis

But it's a good syntax

This is PPCG. Weird is a compliment.

If this message hits 10 stars I'll do absolutely nothing
keep starring for the no-op

@Maltysen We'll see. For now, I'll implement the minimal set of features that allows me to launch the site. There was some opposition to Google (and I hadn't even considered Facebook), so I'll start with dedicated accounts.

i see

@TuxCopter lol

Q: Taxicab in San Fransisco

1000000000You are a taxicab driver in San Francisco. As is typical of taxicab drivers, you are navigating a grid where the only valid directions you can move are the left, right, up, and down. However, San Fransisco is very hilly so the distance between two adjacent intersections is not necessarily the sam...

@Dennis I would love OpenID support

There's a codegolf answer in the HN frontpage btw.

Link?

> My suspicion is that no one wants to explain monads because if they did it would be painfully obvious that they're a purgatorial way of getting around the basic mismatch between functional purity and actual computers.

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ We need screeps server.

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ our own, it's on github now

it's not
it's just a mostly empty repo
no code really

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ The code is online - the main repo imports the modules which are also online.
There are instructions for setting up your own server

9:26 PM
@quartata join the new tf2 server
vihan.org:27015

can I play too

Oh neat, I might actually start playing TF2
again

I just need to update TF2

@TuxCopter I deleted it because people downvoted it

wat
If you got only 1 downvote, it's not a reason to delete

9:32 PM
@TimmyD :D JOIN US!
@TuxCopter yes
but you may have shit ping

hello fellow programmers, how are you today

@GabrielBenamy Hello!

@GabrielBenamy hello fellow map

I'm doing well

@TuxCopter :D

9:33 PM
@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ I am in Corsica ;_;

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ Not tonight but possibly tomorrow.

@TuxCopter there was one less downvote than upvote

9:34 PM
It's been 7 days since I posted this, right? I want to make sure I'm not making a timezone error.

oh, it was negative score
Why people downvote Turtlèd ಠ_ಠ

because I posted it in chat?

@Downvoters ಠ_ಠ
@ಠ_ಠ Downvoters

@Feersum, you should make a "Just another seed hacker" program. or "Just the only seed hacker"

@feersum Wait, what? That's insane. You're insane. How.

9:36 PM
^^ Totally
This would take centuries to crack o_____O — TùxCräftîñg Nov 4 at 20:55

No one can tell if it was 7 days?

@TuxCopter are you joining tf2 server?

Launching TF2 now, but I think I will have shit ping

8 days for me...

9:38 PM
@feersum im pretty sure it was 7 days

so yeah probably 7 days now
7 days +12 hours?

@feersum you can do a quick edit, and then subtract the timestamps you get on the hover

I thought it was 7 days + 1 hour.

^
@feersum yeah its 7 days

yeah
might just be timezone things, yeah
I didn't look at the official time actually..

9:42 PM
210ms ;_; @Downgoat

@TuxCopter it ok :/
i think

I can't connect to the server
The 'Connect' button is disabled

if i do a esolang with 6 bit commands
will it save some bytes?
like id have to do more 1.5 byte commands but the common commands would be shorter
and is it 1.5 bytes or 2 then?

nvm it work

9:45 PM
@TuxCopter ;_; where did u go

noT INF in Alphafuck is a infinite loop

just 1 more

Bring. Back. The. Skull!

Turns out it was actually 5012 bytes, not 5009. Does anyone mind?

That obviously invalidates the entire answer. Delete it and try again. :p

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ

9:49 PM
@Geobits

And the original was 5861, not 5863. Ugh!

@feersum you need to reveal the solution to declare the answer safe, I think

What do you guys think of the KotH I'm planning

Apparently one of of them I did a word select instead of a line select, and on the other didn't realize the line selection included a \r\n.
I'm leaving it up another day with fixed byte counts.

9:52 PM
Me: "Lets prepare the podcast thing" - XLR cable: "Nope."

@feersum I don't think the issue for people was matching the byte counts...
also @feersum are you ever gonna tell us how to break Mersenne Twister?

You have some what?

@feersum copy paste typo
@mınxomaτ wait its happening today?

BTW, @EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ @Maltysen @DrMcMoylex @Doorknob @PhiNotPi Podcast audio tests for Group A happening in two hours. No topics, just setup today.
Group B next week.

9:54 PM
:O

:J

@mınxomaτ whaaaat :O

@PhiNotPi What kind of face is that :D

ok, I have two hours to convince my parents that you guys aren't pychopaths

> pychopaths

9:56 PM
@Maltysen we're actually sociopaths
2

Downgoat celebrated his 500th consecutive day here, so I'd say it's gonna be difficult
Might be easier to convince them that you are a psychopath yourself

@mınxomaτ cool

> For Nearly 20 Years the Nuclear Launch Code at all Minuteman Silos in the United States Was 00000000
