Did something happen to the recent controversial attribution meta post? I can't seem to find it.

@Calvin'sHobbies It's no longer featured, but it's at about -250 total score

@AlexA. But it wasn't even on the last page of questions sorted by votes

Q: A New Code License: The MIT, this time with Attribution Required

samthebrandUpdate: January 15, 2016 Thank you for your candidness, patience and feedback. We're going to delay the implementation for now - we'll be back soon to open some more discussions. Important context for those arriving from reddit and slashdot links: The status quo is not "public domain", att...

lol, erry tim they do PSAs, they get flooded with DVs

> erry tim
@Quill Well yeah, when they propose nonsensical things like this, they're bound to get downvoted.
:P

Why are there no robot assassins in this story? I was told there'd be robot assassins. What kind of half-rate dystopia doesn't have robot assassins? Are you gonna tell me that all the killer robot companies got sued out of existence and the future will have no roving killbots at all?! — Shog9 ♦ yesterday

Was I not civil?

Did you reply to it? I did not see

@thegrinner As for Code Golf, that's just a joke site, right? — TylerH yesterday
@TylerH As a moderator on Code Golf, I can tell you that while we like to have fun, we are most certainly not a "joke site." We have some incredible solutions to intellectually stimulating problems. I invite you to join the community and see what we're all about. — Alex A. 6 hours ago
@AlexA. I already have an account there, I just haven't seen anything other than "What's the smallest way I can write this" with 50 different languages in the answers, usually with Brainfuck winning with something like @(&*)&@#$(*&@)(@$. — TylerH 22 mins ago
@TylerH The objective of a code golf competition is to solve the given task with the shortest code possible, so what you describe is pretty typical (though that isn't valid Brainfuck code :D). But I fail to see how solving a programming challenge with the shortest possible code constitutes a joke site. — Alex A. 5 mins ago
(FWIW he actually doesn't have an account here)

On the SE API. Our questions per minute shows up as zero :/

People are just asses when it comes to talking about us ;_;

We're not well understood

Yeah I think it's really about cramming everything into an 8 bit latin/greek encoding, presumably so you can use greek letters for more crap in the maximally-terse code golf language while keeping actual 'file' length to a minimum. — pvg 2 days ago
@AlexA. You were a perfect gentlemen ^_^

fwiw that guy is probably not representative of what the se network thinks of us

@Doᴡɴɢᴏᴀᴛ well, even 10 questions per day is like 0.007 questions per minute

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ Oh wonderful, thanks for telling me, that's good to know.

@quartata This may be true, but it's happened before ^^^^^

3:14 AM
@quartata No, but we aren't well understood by a lot of the network. Things like Stack Egg and code trolling really hurt.

I guess the Area 51 goal has some James Bondy subtext

hm

uh... ok
Oh wait I get how that makes sense now

maybe when we get some of those community ads people will stop spouting inane bs and actually learn a bit about what we are

i dont even know an esolang with greek letters

JOLF
HAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHA
sorry

@quartata APL, despite seeming esoteric to some, isn't an esolang, though it does use some Greek letters.

true

i forgot se chat doesn't like ?1 at the end

Sure it's not just lack of !?

also i am still cringing at the bf comment. one look at the wikipedia article for bf would make it pretty clear it isnt a golfing lang nor does it use &
ah well dont feed the troll

@Calvin'sHobbies i didn't even know you could do that
i just let it auto-onebox when it sees the file extension

! in front of a url does magic

@quartata None of the characters he used are used in BF.

@undergroundmonorail ! forces oneboxing which is necessary sometimes

Q: Parse RNA into codons

ZgarbIntroduction RNA is the less famous cousin of DNA. Its main purpose is to control the production of proteins in cells through a process called translation. In this challenge, your task is to implement a part of this process where the RNA is split into codons. This challenge is thematically rela...

can somebody help me write regex for finding the start and stop codons?

@quartata lies

@TanMath you've got a space after in that can disappear

@TanMath What are they again?

3:21 AM
@TanMath also before zip

@El'endiaStarman AUG for start and UGA, UAA, and UAG for stop...

What am I reading? oh codons

@TanMath For the former AUG is all you need and for the latter, U[GA|AA|AG], though I'm pretty sure that can be golfed.

@El'endiaStarman gracias!

i'm really excited about the new panic! album but i'm too lazy to actually buy it oops

3:24 AM
Just wait for it to be uploaded to YouTube. :P

what are you panicking about? :p

Discos

@El'endiaStarman worshipping YouTube in my Jon Skeet shrine
Me getting the wrath of Jon Skeet now

@TanMath you can shorten ['UGA','UAA','UAG'] to ''UGAUAAUAG'
It still works the same.

3:26 AM
@RikerW no...
will it?

I haven't actually even read the question but
wouldn't that give a false positive for like
GAU

did you know: the '!' in Panic! at the Disco was originally just part of the logo. it wasn't supposed to be part of the name and, in fact, their second album doesn't have it on the cover. people just liked it enough to keep using it and now it's part of the name

@RikerW Or UGA0UAA0UAG

@undergroundmonorail like I care

3:30 AM
:o

@TanMath You're not the only person in this chatroom.
I, for one, appreciate the factoid.

@AlexA. does Julia have eval(

ok...

@quartata Yes, but it applies to Expr, not strings.

Hm.

3:32 AM
so how is eval(2+3) different from 2+3?

@Calvin'sHobbies In Julia?

^

if eval("2+3") is invalid
yes

You can do eval(:(2 + 3)), which evaluates the Expr :(2 + 3).

@Calvin'sHobbies maybe it would be better for situations like x*2+3 with x as a variable...

3:34 AM
@Calvin'sHobbies It's valid but it doesn't do what you might think; it just returns the string.

@AlexA. How would you eval an arbitrary user input (i.e. string) expression?

You can, however, parse an Expr out of a string using parse. So eval(parse("2+3")) would work.
@Calvin'sHobbies ^

is julia on ideone?

No
R is though

3:35 AM
is there a way for me to run julia code online?
@AlexA. so???

@AlexA. Stop cheating on Julia

@TanMath I'm just saying it's there.
@Calvin'sHobbies I've been so unfaithful.

@AlexA. ok...
maybe i should learn mathematica and julia...

What for?

golfing! and just because...

3:37 AM
Julia's not particularly competitive for golfing, nor does it tend to get that many upvotes.

I would not recommend buying Mathematica just for code golf

^

a pi is worth it

mathematica is free anyway...

uh
i disagree

3:38 AM
No it is not

mathematica=wolfram language and wolfram language is free...

Isn't Mathematica the only interpreter for the Wolfram language?

@Calvin'sHobbies ^ here
@AlexA. yeah, something like that...

very limited though

3:40 AM
@AlexA. They have a console version on the rasberry pi. Pretty much the same, just no fancy image support and stuff. (Though don't quote me on this, I don't know much about mathematica in general)

^
just 5 dollars... on raspberry pi zero...

Dyalog APL is also free on Raspberry Pi.

@quartata really?

Oh yeah I forgot they have a free RPi version

(Though a student version is free anyway)

3:41 AM
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ Oh, yeah. Thanks.

Which, honestly, kinda confuses me. Mathematica seems like quite a large program to have on a tiny computer.

@RikerW My pleasure!

^^

Wait Dyalog APL is on the RPi?

@El'endiaStarman My girlfriend's mom has one of the first versions of Mathematica on a floppy disk. XD
@quartata Yeah

3:41 AM
rofl

@AlexA. haha, nice

whoa that means I dont have to use ngn like a filthy pleb anymore

@El'endiaStarman don't underestimate the power of Raspi

@El'endiaStarman Now that you mention it.. "Disk Space: 8.8 GB"

@quartata I just got a student version of Dyalog. If you fill out an application for a student license, they don't actually check whether you're a student.

3:42 AM
Pretty sure my micro sd is not filled with all that

> Mathematica is optimized for the latest operating systems and hardware, so you can use any system you want.
...isn't that a bit of contradiction in terms?

@AlexA. rofl

@quartata Also ain't nothin' wrong with ngn/apl

@AlexA. lol wat

Barely know what APL is...

3:43 AM
^

lol
I know it is like uber-golfy, but nothing else/

@RikerW It's true, though I am technically a student.

v

Of what?

"Mathematica works great on new stuff, so you can use old ones too!"

3:43 AM
@RikerW it's a programming language

Wrongness?

APL (named after the book A Programming Language) is a programming language developed in the 1960s by Kenneth E. Iverson. Its central datatype is the multidimensional array. It uses a large range of special graphic symbols to represent most operators, leading to very concise code. It has been an important influence on the development of concept modeling, spreadsheets, functional programming, and computer math packages. It has also inspired several other programming languages. It is still used today for certain applications. == History == The mathematical notation for manipulating arrays w...

@Calvin'sHobbies Thank you, Captain Obvious.
@AlexA. I know that much...

they dont check at all? that seems problematic

3:44 AM
@RikerW I'm in an online master's program.
Applied statistics

Okay.

@quartata Whatever. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
It means folks get Dyalog for free.

BTW, i head something about a stack egg here earlier?
Elaborate?

my predictive carrots are bad...

Yeah, it was an April Fool's joke.

3:45 AM
It sounds like an easter egg or something.
Oh, okay.

@El'endiaStarman what is it?

What was it though?

A playable mini-game in the browser.

april fools on stack exchange, every site got a tamagotchi thing that represented an SE site

TanMath'd

3:46 AM
Aww..

you voted on what you wanted to do
some regulars here misunderstood the point of the game

when was this again?

So I missed it?

Turns out, it was possible to force other sites' StackEggs to reset...

and tried to "win" by screwing up other sites'
@TanMath april 1-n
@RikerW yeah

3:46 AM
Aww.

It was last year.

That sounds fun...
So it was basicaly intersite code trolling?

no it wasnt

@undergroundmonorail where did that -n come from

@undergroundmonorail which year, 2015?

3:47 AM
yeah

v

@RikerW Mostly Code Golf vs Code Review.

not fun

lol prediction worked.
@quartata Are you sure?

Most sites kept to themselves.

3:47 AM
Sounds like fun.
So what was the intended easter egg?

It was, a bit.

just to play on your own site's stackegg

What was the stackegg?

the tamagatchi

@RikerW Code Golf made it not fun by "raiding" the other sites, i.e. going onto the other sites and voting to "restart" the site.

3:48 AM
A playable mini-game that was like a mini version of the SE sites.

@AlexA. Oh.

It was a network wide competition and we won by cheating.

WTF?

^

Why did we do that?

3:49 AM
the code is out on github somewhere

my understanding is that people here legitimately misunderstood the point, they weren't just trying to be jerks

at the very least, that's what they said

Okay.
v

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ You can give it a shorter name if you like;)

3:49 AM
<

@undergroundmonorail Yeah. We're very nice people!

Yeah, that ^^^^^

Yep, some CG people thought the point of the game was direct competition, including raids.

@ETHproductions Oh, I just forget the encoding ^_^

i wasnt around at ppcg then but i was a stalker at so/meta se and there was a big stink about it iirc

3:50 AM
WTF IS WITH THE CARROTS IN HERE PEOPLE
(」゜ロ゜)」

IDK.

hue hue

what??

Hey @AlexA.!
Why? :P

why?

3:51 AM
Because you're spamming carets.

@quartata Yep, I remember that.

But the last one was funny!

None of them are funny.

v
^

3:51 AM
just delete the rubbish ones that didn't predict...

^ agreed.

can we get some celeries?

no!
just carrots!

@AlexA. permission for exponential caret growth?

3:52 AM
@Calvin'sHobbies Yes.

(and maybe some broccoli!)

or apples

apparently peanut butter on celery is good but i'd rather have peanut butter on a spoon

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ I was expecting a rickroll...

fruit represnt

3:52 AM
<- peanut butter cracker sandwiches! MMMMmmmm... ^_^

(celeryman)

@El'endiaStarman Oh man, I haven't had those in ages.

i love peanut butter

i called my language pb but that's actually just a coincidence haha

3:53 AM
peanut butter brush?
:p

holy shit I go for lunch, 277 new messages wtf

@Quill this chat has a lot of those

@Quill This is one of the more active times...

Wow, a computer keyboard is so much easier to use than the tablet one EDIT: fixed 156 typos (give or take 149)

more importantly what did you have for lunch

@ETHproductions and yet

I quoted the whole sentence because it was easier than quoting each individual misspelled word. :P

3:55 AM
> not a real place

@undergroundmonorail he is aussie

@quartata common misconception there's actually no such thing

ninjad thanks shitty internet

@quartata changes username to "shitty internet" for the purposes of capitalizing on this joke opportunity

3:56 AM
anyways seriously what did you have for lunch

@quartata Asking the important questions.

Oooh, hello spidey runs away in terror

truly the most important question
lunch

@Calvin'sHobbies 0, for I do not eat toast.

3:58 AM
@Calvin'sHobbies Is this in one sitting or at once as in stacked on top of one another?
@El'endiaStarman Blasphemer

I like my toast burnt to an imagination, thanks for asking
