Anyways I agree

@NathanMerrill I'll write it up tonight. IMHO Unary answers to a code golf competition violate the competitiveness clause in our help center.

@Dennis really? I said "direct translation of ES6 answer"
Nvm, you are right...

@Dennis yeah, I think I disagree with you on that. I'm all for the transition in "shortest answer in my specific lanauge"
so, if two users want to try and get the shortest Unicorn answer

@Dennis what about code bowling or popcons? They would be OK for that right?

they can go and do that

10:02 PM
@NathanMerrill But Unary is just a BF encoding. The shortest Unary answer corresponds to the shortest BF answer.

fixed...

@quartata Of course! They are competitive in those contests.

@Dennis I'm not sure how unary works, but wouldn't changing certain characters in BF change the length of unary?
therefore, different equal-length BF answers could have different lengths in unary?

Wow, only 2 pages of chat in 2 hours? That is sloow. :P

yeah, I said that earlier :P
its a saturday

10:08 PM
lol
It is so slow, I have mowed 3 lawns+weeded 2 more in this time.
I have no life on saturdays.

does anybody?

sounds like a job which implies a life if you ask me

IDK to both of you.
Now, to plant another peach tree...

Actually @RikerW is trying to earn credits in the latest social gaming craze Suburbiaville.

@feersum Wat?
No, actually planting trees + yardwork.
:P

10:12 PM
why do you have multiple lawns

Cause magic..

Off topic: Does this look like a good challenge idea?

Actually front, back 1+2.
@JAtkin We are actually the off topic ones...
@JAtkin Well, sethbling can do that in minecraft...

Well, I'm off your topic... So

Attributted to @GamrCorps

@NathanMerrill Yes, in Unary, the length is the program. But the Unary translation of a BF program of n bytes will always be shorter than the translation of a program of n + 1 bytes.

@flawr On trackpad right now so.... :P
bai to you, hai to peach. :P

Last though, wtf is wrong with strawpoll? I voted and almost 300 people agree????

@TanMath Please stop spamming!

10:16 PM
@TanMath Dude, stop pls.
The next time I might end up flagging.

^

Sorry mods, but I think that counts as spam.
@Dennis formal opinion?

@RikerW That is really strange, I just made that poll!

definitely not spam

Okay.
Won't then.
Still, stop though @TanMath.

Sure!

@Cแดษดแดส€O'Bส€ษชแด‡ษด Oh, thanks dude.
@LegionMammal978 เฒ _เฒ

@RikerW Spam means something else as far as SE is concerned, but it's certainly disruptive. Also, chat flags gets broadcast to the entire network.

Okay.
Sorry mods.

10:20 PM
No need to be sorry. You asked, we answered.

Wow, still procrastinating. :P
I really do have no life.

@Dennis Is there a difference between the two types of flags you can submit, when clicking on the arrow to the left of each message?
"flag as spam/offensive" vs "flag for moderator" ?

^^

@flawr The first kind gets broadcast to 10k users, the second only to moderators.

10:22 PM
My cat is actually doing that right now....
Now she is laying across my arms.

Say hello to her for me.

My fingers are free though.

@Dennis across the entire chat network?

@flawr Stormy says hi back.
:P

that's a huge amount of users that get notified at a flag

10:22 PM
stormy how cute=)

@NathanMerrill Yes, all but SO and Meta SE, which have their own domain.

^^

Stormy Cat-Cat Shrodinger Wachtler.

Isn't this just overkill?

what's the purpose?

10:23 PM
bai now, to feed cat

is it because most other chats are much less lively?

@Dennis Also, deletion due to spam/offensive flags come with an automatic timed suspension. I think that's not true for mod flags.

Wanna try?
I'd volunteer.

No!!

only arqade and code review seems to be the other active chat networks (from rooms I've visited)

10:24 PM
@flawr I don't like it at all, but that's how it is. Not all chat rooms as as blue as this one.
@flawr There ought to be 100 mods online right now that could act on the flag before I can. Not a good idea...

There should really be a flag that only affects members of the room.

I wish there was.

Do you think that proposal would have any chance?

Probably not.
There's some discussion about it here:

Q: Toward a philosophy of Chat

Shog9TL;DR: The Problem This keeps happening in chat: Surprise at flags on vulgar messages. Language that would invariably get your comments deleted on the main site occasionally gets flagged and deleted in chat. Confusion reigns. Controversial topics leading to bickering and name-calling. Folks b...

10:29 PM
I'd argue for a system that only notifies all mods and 10K users if there are less than, say, 10 users in a room

Q: Add escalation system to chat flags

Mad ScientistThe offensive/spam flags in chat are shown to every moderator from a parent site (on chat.stackexchange.com that is every SE 2.0 moderator, more than 200 right now) and 10k chat users as well. This is potentially far more users than a flag on an SE site itself is shown to. I don't think it is n...

oh, that's actually a better system

Especially since it takes only one mod to act on the flag, the current system is kinda silly.

Yeah really.
Can you actually see some kind of flag history of the users?

In chat? No.

10:52 PM
Wow, that's from 2011. I'm surprised they haven't done something by now.

Are you normal? xkcd.com/242

Pretty quiet in here..
Mini-challenge: Make Alex say "เฒ _เฒ ".

LETS START SHOUTING THEN
@AlexA. Please say "เฒ _เฒ "

@flawr standard loophole

11:07 PM
What

@AlexA. Please don't say "เฒ _เฒ "

... uhh Firefox just updated itself against my will >:(

brb Editing Alex's last message.

@Dennis unfair loophole :P

@Dennis use of a language(/chat message) created before the challenge, disqualified :P

11:08 PM
^^^^ Reverse psychology

@Calvin'sHobbies Flag as loophole.

But I'm, quite literally, making Alex say เฒ _เฒ .

Hey @AlexA., dogs suck.
^ that oughta do it.

@El'endiaStarman Julia sucks too.

He's not here ;)

11:10 PM
@Calvin'sHobbies That certainly managed to rattle all the chatters.

lool

Not me

New challenge: Make @เฒ _เฒ  say "AlexA.".

:26891211 How did you know we were talking about "เฒ _เฒ "? You were never actually pinged.

@RikerW What?

11:12 PM
@Calvin'sHobbies A "bot" looking for เฒ _เฒ

Pops up in my RSS reader=)

The astute observer can also make an educated guess as to whose sockpuppet เฒ _เฒ  is, although I won't tell anyone myself :P
(and no, it's not Alex)

^

Who is this Alex you are always talking about?

11:17 PM
Your doom

เฒ _เฒ

Doorknob

Mini-mini-challenge: Who can read this challenge and type in their username first?

Dorknoob... whoops

Apostrophes are hard

11:19 PM
Learning Haskhell is a pain.
Why can't they make some readable error messages??????

Starman El'endia
wait

@LegionMammal978 the answer, apparently, is "nobody"

@flawr, it's because of how <REDACTED>. Why didn't you know already?

Man, if only we had someone with the username "Nobody"...

11:23 PM
@LegionMammal978 their username

...man, if only Nobody was in chat...

@Dennis wrong, it's in their username first?

@LegionMammal978 lol.

@Doorknob Doorknob can
I win

All hail the Knob of Doors.

11:24 PM
*Knob of Door

@Doorknob You are c <REDACTED> ect! For your efforts, y <REDACTED> u win <REDACTED>!

Who redacts a single letter?

Why isn't Door pronounced the same way as Doom?

Other than LegionMammal978, that is.

@flawr because English is weird

11:25 PM
@El'endiaStarman <REDACTED> does...

Doomknob

@flawr Different etymology, probably.
Well, if you want to say doom like door, that'd be dom, and vice versa would be doer, or dur, but dur would be said differently.

<RED <REDACTED> D>

@Doorknob Maybe I am not very astute, but I cannot think of anyone who knows Octave here who is also silly enough to make a sockpuppet

> door (n.) - Middle English merger of Old English dor (neuter; plural doru) "large door, gate," and Old English duru (fem., plural dura) "door, gate, wicket;" both from Proto-Germanic *dur- (cognates: Old Saxon duru, Old Norse dyrr, Danish dør, Old Frisian dure, Old High German turi, German Tür).

11:28 PM
maybe flawr?

@El'endiaStarman I would assume "dom" is pronounced /dษ‘หm/ (IPA)
"dome" would make more sense

dom son

> doom (n.) - Old English dom "law, judgment, condemnation," from Proto-Germanic *domaz (cognates: Old Saxon and Old Frisian dom, Old Norse domr, Old High German tuom, Gothic doms "judgment, decree"), from PIE root *dhe- "to set, place, put, do" (cognates: Sanskrit dhaman- "law," Greek themis "law," Lithuanian dome "attention;" see factitious). A book of laws in Old English was a dombec. Modern sense of "fate, ruin, destruction" is c. 1600, from the finality of the Christian Judgment Day.

but then, English isn't phonetically unambiguous so you can't really do things like that

@Doorknob when I used to develop for Selenium (browser automation) I had to set a bunch of flags so that firefox wouldn't try to update while I was running my code

11:29 PM
@Doorknob Yeah, you're right.

I was trying to say that <<<<<<<<REDACTED>EDACTED>DACTED>ACTED>CTED>TED>ED>D>
Oh well...

@LegionMammal978 This is a terrible method of redaction. :P

@LegionMammal978 So meta.

11:55 PM
But then again, <<R<REDACTED>D<REDACTED>C<REDACTED>E<REDACTED>>E<REDACTED>A<R<REDACTED>D<REDACT‌ED>C<REDACTED>E<REDACTED>>T<REDACTED>D>...
