I'm kind of curious. Is there a purely functional golfing language?

I though Pip was but I don't really remember

So far it doesn't seem purely functional. It seems to have mutable variables.

@Justin Only for certain definitions of "golfing language"
(ex. "not Java")

That's so mean :(

Java is not functional.

5
@Geobits I made this for you
6

You could say Java is dysfunctional.

The carrot is pointing the wrong direction, but I figured it's more important to preserve the "downvote" aspect of the avatar

I love it. I'm not going to use it, but just know that I heartily approve.

:D

1:32 AM
So there really is no purely functional golfing language? I guess I'll have to make one...

You should make a multi-paradigm, homoiconic, performant golfing language.

...have you guys talked about starting a PPCG blog?

@El'endiaStarman yes

Really?

A while ago, though, before the "official" blogs got shut down

1:36 AM
What are these "official" blogs of which you speak?

10
Q: Code Golf Blog - Phase 1 - Raise the idea on the meta site

DoorknobIt might be interesting if we had a community blog for our site. Maybe we could blog about specific exemplary posts here, or about golfing in general, or about exploring some things about our site (like the recent code-trolling invasion), or about current events related to golfing or our site, o...

I brought up the topic of a Medium blog in chat once but I never got around to making the meta post

Medium?

Aug 30 at 16:50, by Doorknob
^ Thoughts on creating a Medium publication for PPCG?

Eh? Both Christianity and Math have their specific blogs still up. Well, at least, the posts are visible.

@El'endiaStarman Yeah, but new ones can't be created at this point

1:37 AM
Ahhh, bummer.

But we can still do a Medium publication thing! I should probably make a meta post about that soon.

Why Medium specifically?

I think it was the SE-recommended approach now that "official" blogs no longer exist

They must be in cahoots with Medium :P
I'd be interested to hear what the community thinks about a blog now, a year after your previous meta post.

I'm new, but I really want to learn about what goes into making a golfing language.

1:46 AM
Copy Pyth or CJam. :P

@El'endiaStarman My first thought is designing the language. What operators and stuff should go into the language. After you design that, I'd design a basic parser for a non-golfed version of the language and play around with it, then work on finding a minified set of characters.
For instance, for a purely functional golfing language, I'd take a look at Haskell programs and see what functions are used a lot, and make those functions smaller in terms of chars to use.

I don't know, I don't really see the benefit of a PPCG blog. (I especially don't understand why Code Review would want one, wtf.)
@Doorknob What do you see the primary benefit being?

@AlexA. For one thing, I see a lot of discussions in here that go waaay over my head (advanced math/CS stuff). It would be really interesting to see that stuff converted into blog format.

Like chat discussions?
I think a lot of the advanced math and CS stuff that gets discussed in here isn't directly related to PPCG. :P

Also, esolangs are... an esoteric topic (obviously), and a blog on them is probably a pretty unique concept that I think would do quite well.

1:50 AM
@Doorknob So like an explanation of my factoring over finite fields question?
That Peter Taylor answered? So I could, say, write a large explanation of Peter Taylor's answer that attempts to explain it down to a level of someone who hasn't seen Group/Ring/Field Theory?

@AlexA. Heh, but I've seen a lot of it that is (also OEIS sequences are fun, which are kinda related to PPCG because we use them a lot, and related discussions could fit pretty well in blog format)
@Justin Yeah, that's what I was thinking ^.^

@Justin Seems entirely unrelated to the scope of the site

Well, if it's about a challenge posted here...

Oh it is?

Yes

1:53 AM
Didn't know

I posted a challenge about factoring polynomials over certain finite fields, or the integers
Peter Taylor has the only answer to that challenge.
15
Q: Factor a polynomial over a finite field or the integers

JustinWithout using any built-in factoring/polynomial functions, factor a polynomial completely into irreducibles over the integers or a finite field. Input Your program/function will receive some prime (or zero) number n as input. The field/ring is the finite field of that order (ie Z/nZ), or just Z...

Oh yeah, I remember that.

I still think blog posts about esolangs would be really interesting. Golfing languages like El'endia said, and also stuff like Retina/Labrynth/basically everything Martin does in esolangs, because it's awesome how people manage to take a hammer and build an ice sculpture with it (to use a terrible analogy :P).

Heck, I almost want to volunteer to make animations that show how Hexagony works.

I wish I understood how Hexagony works well enough to make animations

1:58 AM
The intuition I got is that the source code can be tiled in a honeycomb pattern, and then the instruction pointer just moves in a straight line (until redirected). That's why it wraps around the way it does.
The memory pointer is more confusing.

(If we do get a blog, I'm totally writing about Snowman on it. :P)

I almost want to make a version of Befunge that can be easily extended. A version of Befunge that is a real programming language. I'd also modify some things and make it completely compile-able.
Give it a GUI library for instance
Now that would be fun to code in.

In what way is Befunge not a real programming language?
It's completely unreadable but IIRC it's Turing complete.

In that it has no way to write libraries for itself in its own language
You can't separate out the files and simply use "functions" from another file. Granted, you can read a file in and dump it into your program, but I think that's not a good way to go about doing this.
And yes, Befunge is Turing complete.
Even Befunge 93 is Turing Complete if you allow arbitrary-length integers to be stored per cell.

2:19 AM
Here's an interesting thought: Would a challenge such as "Write a library that implements a Finite State Machine" work? The idea is that I would write some specs that the code must implement, including the interface to the code. Part of the problem I'm seeing is that this is inherently not language agnostic, since some languages don't allow objects, but I'm intrigued by this idea.
This would provide an advantage to traditionally lousy golfing languages like C++ or Java.
Completely off topic from my previous messages, but is it a good idea to try to avoid busy-waiting in embedded systems? Clearly one could just do busy-waiting, but would one gain anything from inserting a sleep or something in there?

2:40 AM
@AlexA. I'm still alive! Busy as all hell, but alive.

@StainRebel OH GOOD. I thought you were dead.

I sneak around these parts sometimes :D

How is school going?

Hard.

Yeah?
What's hard this semester?

2:42 AM
Errm... @El'endiaStarman is a name I do not recognize.

Mod on Christianity.SE, new to PPCG.

Oh, not again.

Okay, cool, nice to have ya :D

I posted my first challenge earlier today.
Thanks! ^_^

@AlexA. Currently, circuits is unexpectedly kicking my rear.

2:43 AM
Surprise butt kick

I'll check the challenge out when I have the chance :D
The worst kind of butt kick.

Are you taking a ton of classes?

6 of 'em.

D:
How are you still alive?

I've also been doing some internship-hunting.
I don't really know how I'm still alive.

2:44 AM
My fiancée's roommate is taking 7 classes. She is also very busy.

Ouch
What are they studying?

The most I managed in undergrad was 5 at once.

They're all mathematics/engineering, too.
No gen-eds this semester.

I don't know or remember any, except one is business ettiquete. Etiquette. Hey, second try!

:P

2:46 AM
I think the most I've ever had was 6, but one was pretty much trivial, so only 5, effectively.

Second try? You are clearly a god among men. It takes me more tries than that to spell mayonnaise.

@StainRebel I didn't take any gen-ed classes at the University of Washington; I did them all in community college during high school. So 5 math at once.

Five math classes at once sounds AWESOME and horrifying.

Yeah, I had a similar experience. I didn't take all of them during high school, so I had some to take my freshman year. From here on out, though, it's all technical.

Really? I have 7 classes right now, but one is a seminar .5 credit class. One is piano lessons which is technically 1 credit, but in reality, it requires more than that.

2:48 AM
@El'endiaStarman Haha that sounds about right :)

I'm taking a total of 18 hours this semester.

I am almost taking 18. 17.5

At UW you needed special permission from the school to take more than 18.

Nice! What are you studying?
Here at WSU you need permission to go above 21.

Computer engineering, but he should be studying math

2:48 AM
I'm studying Computer Engineering. At BYU you also have to get special permission to take more than 18
Haha

:P

I think I can do both

Oh, sweet! I'm thinking of changing my major to Computer Engineering/Math (from EE/Math)
BYU Idaho or Utah?

Utah
haha

BYU = Utah. BYUI = BYU Idaho. BYUH = BYU Hawaii.
BYU always means BYU Utah

2:50 AM
Ah, darn. I have a really good friend who went to the Idaho campus.
Good to know :D

Idaho has strange rules. Apparently you can't wear shorts there.

Weird.

EE and CE are almost identical here at BYU. They let you switch majors from one to the other up until your Senior year.

Judging from the way he communicates to me, he hasn't been following a great deal of rules.

Like during your Senior year you can change.
Oh... that's probably not a good thing to advertise

2:51 AM
Yeah, same here. There's like 2 classes difference between CE and EE.

I agree that many of the BYU honor code rules are ridiculous, but since you have to agree to them, you shouldn't be telling people that you don't follow them
Some of the rules are just plain outdated. You aren't supposed to wear anklets.

That's true. It was mostly a joke. Mostly

I've actually been scared about going into the testing center before
Since I had never shaved before in my life and I worried that they would think I needed to shave (I didn't really have facial hair...)

That sounds pretty darn strict... What's wrong with anklets?!

With my current face, I haven't shaved in over 4 months. I only shaved because I was worried about the testing center
There's nothing wrong with anklets. The thing is, the BYU honor code was made many years ago.
Too many years ago
And they refuse to update it.

2:53 AM
When was there ever anything wrong with anklets?
It seems so completely innocuous

Possibly during the time the rule was made, anklets were associated with rebellious teens.
Which would make it logical why BYU would have that rule

Everything, at some point, is associated with rebellious teens.

Any time something is new and different, it gets blamed on young people.

I can't wait until I'm old enough to blame people my age.

BYU also has a rule that you aren't supposed to be barefoot in public places. I think that's a hygiene thing, so I'm okay. But the funny thing was they had an unannounced fire drill a while back (technically they did announce it; they put a tiny sentence on the bottom of a flyer talking about something unrelated). I thought there was a real fire, so I ran out of the apartment without putting on shoes.
Naturally, my key wasn't in my pocket either
So I got locked out of the apartment barefoot

2:56 AM
Oops

This is painting a wonderful picture.

What? That BYU isn't good? That's not the picture I'm trying to paint. I'm not trying to paint any picture

That's clearly an accident though, that would be ludirous of them to be mad about it.

Yeah they didn't even mention it

I meant the picture of you standing outside your apartment barefoot, haha. I'm a bit too out of it to judge a whole university right now :D

2:57 AM
But I was mad about it because they didn't announce it and, as a result, I got locked out of my apartment.
I had to go walk to the housing office to get a key

That sounds extra sucky D:

I sent in a complaint and got a response. The guy basically said that I did it wrong. I should have taken the time to put on shoes and grab my keys even though the fire alarm was going off. And he proceeded to blow off the rest of my complaints.

Priorities...

Apparently, the natural response to a fire alarm going off is to put on shoes.

If the building had actually been on fire, I think he would probably have a different view.

2:59 AM
Yes

It's very easy to say "Grab the shoes!" when your building isn't on fire.

I didn't even receive an apology.... I'm still not happy about it...

How long ago was that?

Just about 2 weeks ago

At this point I think it's unlikely you'll get one, unfortunately.

3:00 AM
The really funny thing is he said, "I'm sorry you felt you had to go to the housing office to get a key before putting on shoes." Clearly he didn't read my message. I was locked out of my apartment. How was I supposed to put on shoes?

Depends on how vicious your emails get.
That is the worst apology I've ever seen.

It clearly wasn't an attempt at an apology.

Exactly. He just blew off my complaints by saying I was doing everything wrong

Are you allowed to give someone the finger at BYU?

That might be right above anklets in taboo-ness.

3:01 AM
Technically, yes. But they might consider that swearing.
I don't know if we are allowed to swear

... the things I walk in on.

I wouldn't do it though.
Hahaha
I do wish there was a good alternative to the finger, though. I'd use it very frequently.

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ Looks like you're taking over for me. I gotta run, folks, I'll check back when I can. G'night!

Night!

3:03 AM
The cars here pretend that pedestrians don't exist. I've been nearly hit by cars almost every month I've been here.

@StainRebel Oh goodie. I've inherited some responsibility.
Someone want to fill me in? :P

@StainRebel Goodnight!

We are just talking about college life

Specifically BYU

And I'm complaining about some stuff.
But now I'll give some positive stuff

3:04 AM
Justin's experiences thus far seem not to reflect my own college experiences. :P

I love BYU's religion classes. But only some of them (it honestly depends on the professor)
My religion professor somehow made my religion class my favorite class my last semester. Over my engineering class. This semester, my religion class is my second favorite, after math.

I hope this isn't a sensitive topic or anything, but out of curiosity, do science courses at BYU teach evolution?

For anyone who really knows me, that is extremely impressive.
Probably
I fully believe in evolution
Most people at BYU do

Doesn't it contradict the Mormon faith?

@Justin Which religion? :/

3:05 AM
No it doesn't
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ I'm Mormon

@Justin Ah, I see.
(As an aside, is anyone else having problems with fishlanguage.com/?)

We believe that God created us, but we don't say anything about how He created us. My personal opinion is that he could have done so via apes. But that's just human evolution. I fully agree with evolution in general.

@Justin Is it only Christianity that it contradicts then? I figured Mormonism was a superset of Christianity.

Mormonism is not actually a superset of Christianity
Mormons are Christians. But I guess this depends on your definition of Christianity

Oh, okay. Sorry, I don't know a whole lot about it.

3:07 AM
We define Christian to mean "a follower of Christ" or "one who believes in Christ"
Or maybe "one who believes in the crucifixion of Christ"
By those definitions, Mormons are very Christian

@Justin Hrm. Any historian is the latter def. of Christian.

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ That site won't load for me.

@AlexA. Huh, me too. I guess it's down? :/

Idk, I guess so.

Okay, but do they believe in Christ? Like do they believe he did the miracles it says he did? I don't know exactly what my church teaches, but I think it's not just a belief that there was once a person named Jesus Christ who was crucified.

3:10 AM
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ Looks like it's down.

@El'endiaStarman That's a neat site.

I think it's worth noting, without going into too much detail, that many mainstream Christians (Catholic, Protestant, Orthodox) don't consider Mormons to be Christian because they don't believe that Jesus was fully God. And/or that he was created. Or something similar. I have a hard time keeping Mormons and Jehovah's Witnesses separate on that matter.

Okay

@El'endiaStarman That's what I've been taught :P

That's a good point. It's true that we believe that Jesus and God are separate, that Jesus is a god, but The God is distinct. That Jesus is The God's son.
My religion professor from last Fall was ridiculous. He thinks it's crazy how we have geologists at BYU who are Mormon, yet believe that rocks are billions of years old (how ever old the earth is). I hated that religion professor. Very few Mormons actually believe that the earth is 7000 years old. He also was of the opinion that everyone's mind works like his, which was why I struggled immensely in that class.

3:13 AM
Yeah. Very early on (as in, private beta) in Christianity.SE's site, the law was laid down that IF group X says they're Christian, then they are Christian for the purpose of the site. Which I think was a very wise decision.

That definitely is a good idea

Yeah, you don't want to alienate anyone.

@El'endiaStarman Oh yeah, for sure. Imagine the Meta debates. shudders

Just so you guys know, if you have a random question about Mormons, I'm open to questions. Doesn't mean I'll have the answer, but I'm open to questions.

(Alternatively, you could ask those questions over at C.SE. ;) )

3:17 AM
Of course.

Or it might already be there.

@Justin (Forgive me for the distinction) Christians have the Apostles' Creed; do the Mormons have any such creed?

What is the Apostles' Creed?

"I believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried;
he descended into hell.
On the third day he rose again;
he ascended into heaven,
he is seated at the right hand of the Father,
and he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic Church,
the communion of saints,
That is the Apostles' creed.

I've never heard it before, but we do believe in most of those stuff.

3:20 AM
@Justin Ah, I see. What don't you believe in in it?

We do have the Articles of Faith. Those clearly and simply explain what we believe.
I'm not sure if we don't believe anything in it.

This is all very beyond the scope of The Nineteenth Byte. I realize that the room often strays from PPCG-related topics, but since religion can be a sensitive subject for some people, I recommend you continue this discussion in The Upper Room.

@Justin Ah, thank you for the resource. It helps me better understand the Mormons. ^_^

For one, though, we don't really think of a "heaven" and "hell", we use other terms.
Okay

@Justin Other terms?

3:22 AM
Thanks for understanding :)

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ Maybe we should follow Alex's advice

@Justin Which advice? ._.

To go to the Upper Room.

Out of random curiosity, what kind of music do people like?

3:53 AM
I like a large variety. A lot of metal and a lot of not at all metal.
I was listening to Bon Iver earlier.
What about you?

I listen to a genre that is apparently called rock.
But I don't like loud music

Example band or songs?

Death Cab for Cutie, The Postal Service, Keane, Coldplay, Empire of the Sun

If you like classical, @PhiNotPi is actually a really talented composer.

Really?

3:57 AM
Yep

Now I want to know what PhiNotPi's music sounds like
I do like classical
I have two styles of music that I like: this rock-ish music, and instrumental.
For the most part

I like Yiruma, Yanni, Agnes Obel, David Lanz, and similar.
Wow that's actually quite good
Makes me think more of video game music than classical so far, though.

@Justin I like epic music (Two Steps from Hell and Thomas Bergersen especially, but also Trailerhead, Future World Music, and the like), Christian music from a decent variety of artists, and Peter Hollens, Lindsey Stirling, Pentatonix, and Piano Guys.

Are these synthesized music or actually performed? To my ear, it sounds synthesized

4:01 AM
@PhiNotPi ^

I like some of your Christian music, but I find Lindsey Stirling too loud.

I think they're synthesized.

He should find some people who can play this stuff :-). I would try, but I don't know how to play flutes or organs or the like. I could fake the organ...
I like this one
I don't know how hard it is to get on spotify, but I'd totally listen to PhiNotPi's music on it
Wait... is PhiNotPi a girl or a boy?

Boy
(I think)

Okay
@El'endiaStarman First impression of Two Steps from Hell: Lord of the Rings in style.
I guess that's what Epic means

4:06 AM
Ha, that's not a bad way to put it. That's the "Majesty" side of it though; there's also the "Legend" side.
And I use those terms because some time ago, I found the YouTube channel Revennaras (now Sindrannaras) and he had two playlists of ten-minute epic music mixes that were named "Majesty" and "Legend".

Okay
I'm disappointed by Cannon In D Minor... I thought it would pay homage to Pachelbel's Canon.

@Justin Considering your age you shared yesterday, I didn't expect that we would like any of the same bands. But in fact, I really like Death Cab For Cutie. "Black Sun" is one of my favorite songs of this year. Then again, I'm not a fan of Coldplay...

@Justin Yeah, that one doesn't stand out to me in Battlecry. My favorites from that album are Star Sky, Victory, and Never Back Down.

I also like Billy Joel and the Eagles and a few others of that time period
@RetoKoradi I think I shared my age two days ago. But just for anyone who wonders about what happened about my electrical engineering class, I talked to my professor and all seems to be good.

Glad to hear.

4:17 AM
@AlexA. Bon Iver. I've heard some of his music before. I don't like his rendition of Skinny Love as much as Birdy's, but I do like his style

@Justin His rendition? He wrote it. :P

Yes, I do like Billy Joel. I don't think he was ever considered cool, but I still think that he's one of the most gifted song writers of the last few decades.

That's what I mean. I like Birdy's better

Who is Birdy?

Spotify link
@RetoKoradi Billy Joel really wasn't considered cool? Okay. I got the wrong impression from my dad.

4:22 AM
Listening to Birdy's version now. It's good but I prefer the original. :)

Well, probably depends on how you define it. At least the part of his career that I followed, he was very mainstream. So if you took pride in liking more obscure music, you probably wouldn't admit liking him. But I don't care much. I partly like music that's very popular, and partly artists that nobody else has heard of. Doesn't matter to me how they are classified or perceived.

@Justin I think that's my favorite of PhiNotPi's music.

@PhiNotPi Your public adores you.

I think that artists come up with the strangest names for their groups sometimes.
Faded Paper Figures, for example

Or Cannibal Corpse.

4:36 AM
Wow
I named my spotify playlist in honor of the strange naming scheme.
"Keane Empire of Cold Postal Death"

On the radio this morning they were making fun about The Killers playing at a childrens hospital benefit.

Haha
I rather like The Killers
@Justin Does anyone have an opinion on doing a challenge similar to this? Where you implement an interface for a tool?

4:55 AM
How embarrassing... I forgot how to find the energy of a signal...
Maybe it would help if I actually read the book.

Hi guys =) I posted a question a while ago. It has been seen by approx 100 people, so I guess most of you have seen it already. Do you have any input on how I could make this (or the next) question more interesting / attract answers? Or is it just a boring challenge that I can just as well remove? I know that this is what the sandbox is for, but in my experience the feedback is often quite limited there.

10:28 AM
@StewieGriffin first time I see it; I haven't finished fully reading it, but so far I have no idea what it's asking
finished reading, still don't understand it, and I'm annoyed that you're switching between helping Tony and being Tony
so I'd guess that many people couldn't understand the challenge, didn't want to bother, and moved on

10:55 AM
@aditsu, Ok. Thanks for your input. The mix up of names was a result of some editing that went wrong. I've rewritten it a bit, and elaborated on what the goal of the challenge is.
I hope it's clearer now.

Q: Literally code golf

BasIn modern day standards Golfing translates to playing a game of golf, while golf itself translates to a car manufactured by Volkswagen. So instead of the usual golfing of code, you will today be coding a golf. Challenge Write a program (A) in language A which will output the source code of an...

@StewieGriffin still kinda confused... so the input is a time and a distance?
how can you tell if he's ahead or behind?
and the output is a time? how do you calculate it?
you have some distances and times for the whole race; since those don't seem to appear in the input, am I supposed to assume they are predefined and fixed? therefore hardcoded? you didn't explain that
also, do the distances for the 3 phases add up to a total distance for the race, which defines the range for the input distance? you didn't explain that either
and what about the transition phases? is he staying in the same place?

@aditsu, I've tried to update it one more time. Estimated times and distances are predefined and fixed and can therefore be hardcoded. The distances add up to the total distance, and the input can't exceed that value. He's staying in the same place during transition.

ok, so that means for every location in the race (i.e. distance from start), there's an expected time he should arrive there based on the schedule, and you want the difference between that time and the given time

@aditsu Yes! Exactly!! =) I have obviously done something wrong if I haven't been able to get that through until now...

I've read the challenge and I understood it quite easily with the examples
but I think the post in itself is a bit long to read for a challenge that's in the end not that complicated to explain

@StewieGriffin I was guessing it should be something like that, but it only became clear with your recent edits
(btw, there's still an "I'm" left)

(that's cause he's actually Tony Stark)

12:36 PM
I think Elon Musk is the real-life Tony Stark :)

@Fatalize... You got me :P

1:44 PM
@StewieGriffin so anyway, I coded a first answer, probably has some room for more golfing

2:16 PM
what the hell did I miss

@cjfaure a llama flying across the sky, it was majestic

@aditsu was it self-powered or thrown?
(asking because statistically speaking it is very likely that Martin has thrown a llama before)

llama power :p

we must harness this power

i will never understand the internet

@Sp3000 I restricted all integers to 0 - 255 and forgot to allow byte input. :( As written, the rules The input for each task will consist of printable ASCII characters... and All integers can be read in decimal or unary... don't allow it, and I think it's to late to change it now.

I was wondering because you restricted to 0-255 :P
But oh well, it's fine :) I made the assumption I wasn't allowed
(makes language choice a little interesting too)

@Dennis hm, I think I can do the Domino challenge in Retina, but I'm too lazy to start my VM and install Mono to check if it actually works -.-
(no ANSI escapes in PowerShell...)

Seems like they could have just said French and the others would be implied.
