@MartinBüttner You don't need ANSI escapes. Does \r work in PowerShell?

@Dennis probably, but I can't suppress the \n in Retina's output (yet)

@MartinBüttner Ah, OK. I wonder what you have in mind for the delay.
Do you think the challenge is ready for main?

@Dennis just some catastrophic backtracking
@Dennis yeah looks good
do you have Retina running on a Linux machine?

I do. If you can wait an hour, I can do some testing.

sure, that would be great

Q: Watch 'em fall like dominoes

DennisYou live inside a terminal that is 80 characters wide. You are bored, so you decide to play dominoes. No, not the boring kind that look like Scrabble, the fun kind where you spend an hour setting them to watch them fall in a second. In terminals, dominoes look like this: | upright domino \ ...

Q: Most Clever Implementation of Once

itcouldevenbeaboatThe beloved function once(func) takes an argument (func, a function) and returns a function that can be called only once. Any additional attempts to call it return an error. Here are the rules: You must write a once function that fits the description above. You can (and are encouraged) to thro...

@Optimizer I'm dying XD

oh, you were behind the camera ??

lol

4:23 PM
@MartinBüttner I was just about to post my answer :'(

hey!

How is this question still open

I did wonder... not a single too-broad vote

I don't see the point of voting because it's so unlikely to find 5 non-mod users
2

It's 42 all over again!

4:27 PM
I was wondering the same thing. If it wasn't binding, I would have voted to close in a split second.

@feersum 3 or 4 should be enough

Combining feersum's and Dennis' last messages outlines a problem.

It's now impossible to close, apparently

I don't understand @feersum's reasoning though... the CV doesn't cost anything, so I don't see why one would refrain from voting just because they don't think 4 others will.

I could say the "mine is binding, so I won't" idea is flawed, too.

4:30 PM
coz trolling?

It didn't seem like a necessary effort to spend 5 seconds moving the mouse or whatever. Guess I was wrong.

I thought we "elect" moderators because we generally agree with their past decisions.

"past decisions" - I doubt it
they never used mod powers in the past

I mean past voting. If you saw someone voting to close things you didn't agree with all the time, you probably wouldn't vote them up for mod.
What I mean is, mods have already shown they can make sound decisions, else they probably wouldn't be mods.
@Mods Go ahead and vote on things. You can be sure that if you mess up enough, someone will complain on meta ;)

Q: A fast way of "breaking out" elements from an array?

HerpDerpingtonI wrote a method that takes an array T[] array (T is a type parameter) and a second array int[] indices. The method should remove those entries from array, whose indices are stored in indices. Then, the resulting array will be "returned" as an out-parameter T[] rest. Finally, there is a second ou...

4:36 PM
meh, I would ping them and bother them until they repent!
with my llama powers!

Yea, chat and comments too. If it's especially egregious, we can assault from all sides :P

@Geobits I CV duplicates, off-topic and unclear if the spec is objectively ambiguous. But often unclear is subjective and too broad is even more subjective. That doesn't justify a unilateral close vote. The community should be able to close these things by itself if those questions aren't wanted.

@MartinBüttner One problem with this is that some of our most active voters became mods. We have five mods, and if they all step back from the subjective ones, we lose a good bit of voting power and/or quickness.

Moderators are generally discouraged from deciding things single-handedly that could be addressed by the community without their intervention. Give us something to show that it's not just us. Vote/flag to close, and the decision would be unilateral anymore. You do have a point though. Four of the most active users of PPCG now have binding close votes, and chances are all of them want a post close but none of them casts a vote...

The bystander effect, or bystander apathy, is a social psychological phenomenon that refers to cases in which individuals do not offer any means of help to a victim when other people are present. The probability of help is inversely related to the number of bystanders. In other words, the greater the number of bystanders, the less likely it is that any one of them will help. Several variables help to explain why the bystander effect occurs. These variables include: ambiguity, cohesiveness and diffusion of responsibility. == Social psychology researchEdit == The bystander effect was first ...

4:41 PM
Since there are less non-mod voters, eventually more non-mod voters will step up once more and more questions have not been acted upon.

"In many languages, whitespace can be inserted at will, so this challenge boils down to an art contest."
Plus, at this rate, massive FGITW effect :P

@feersum That doesn't really apply here. We are explicitly discouraged from making unilateral decisions without giving the community a chance to act on its own.

@Dennis You're not part of the community?

Of course I am. But I'm only a single member. That post had no close votes, no flags, nothing. As far as I know, everybody else was OK with it.
@Sp3000 Too harsh?

Nope, those words are basically my thoughts exactly
The only reason I didn't vote though was because I saw it too late, at which point I wasn't sure whether it was time to be strict or let loose for a day

@MartinBüttner Not sure if you already tested it yourself. Your Retina answer is working fine.
@Geobits OK, I hadn't read that. It completely contradicts the instructions I received when they handed me the diamond.

Meta is great like that. You can find support for whatever side you want for almost any issue :P

@MartinBüttner If you replace :`$ with :`^ and [A with c, you can save a byte (and prevent the prompt from painting over the final output).
@Geobits That one made the moderator-faq though, and the answer is from our fearless leader himself. I'm inclined to agree with it, especially considering the moderator/activity ratio on PPCG.

@Dennis I ended up installing Mono after all...

Couldn't wait? ;)

5:06 PM
sort of... and I figured it'll come in handy in the future

Oh, I'd never really noticed there was a [moderator-faq] tag. Interesting.

5:19 PM
@Dennis You couldn't have waited 5 minutes to close the art contest? D':
I spent literally two hours on this: pastebin.com/e7VsmUiT
2
The question of course should be closed, I just really wanted to post that

Dennis, how could you!

Mod wants to post. Mod wants to close. grabs popcorn
2

Mod wants to avoid close!
grabs chips too

@Sp3000 I'm not going to do anything about it other than complain momentarily, which I've already done. :P

not enough JQuery!

5:21 PM
I know :/

I would save that code, just in case it is useful in the future.

I did

@user3072752 haha nice one!
"useful in the future"

@user3072752 It won't be if I'm faster. :P

OH I JUST GOT THAT
@Dennis Haha :P

5:26 PM
Note for the future: Post a crappy answer first, edit later.

Haha
I had just pasted the DeLorean into the post when it said "oh btw, post closed"

That's what I did for the draw a fractal under 140 chars ;)

Wanna see bystander effect in here? Make sure this message has exactly 3 stars at 10 seconds from now (posting of this message)
2

My problem is that I post crappy answers but I don't edit them because I can't think of anything better.

@Optimizer there you go!
no point now, 10 seconds are long over.

5:29 PM
Well, it has 2 stars and it's been way more than 10 seconds.

I didn't even see your post before the ten seconds were over.

^
2

Also, not doing whatever you tell us doesn't prove the bystander effect. :P

@Dennis isn't that included in the bystander effect ?

I can't be a bystander if I'm not there.

5:30 PM
@Dennis the core idea is same - "users think if I star, it might get more than 3"
@Dennis you are here, just not looking :P

Could also be "I just don't want to star that"
That was my reason for not starring it anyway.

caret

Either way Optimizer succeeded in getting free stars.

some bystanders are really unhelpful

Well sure, he mentioned stars. It's the easiest way to get them.
4

5:31 PM
stars
wow, @Geobits can be wrong too!

Geobits is never wrong.

I didn't say it was foolproof, just the easiest method.

easiest has to always work, at the least

Easiest as in "high probability for low effort".
There's a function involved, but the chat message length limit is not long enough for the whole thing.

there is a limit ?

5:35 PM
I think it's 300, maybe 500.

no
I have seen long paragraphs posted in a single message

It's under 9000 for sure.

@user3072752 Well, I'm trying, but I'm not doing my best.
@Calvin'sHobbies That was the result of cat on the PNG file. My terminal got really pissed and beeped at me a bunch while it was printing.

That's what cat -A is for.

A cat with my last initial?

A cat minus your last initial.

Seriously, never cat binary files.

Oh, I see
Why, do cats not like binary?
Cats prefer ternary, obviously.

Q: Can "cat-ing" a file be a potential security risk?

Ivan KovacevicI often use cat on the console to view the contents of files, and every now and then I accidentally cat a binary file which basically produces gibberish and system beeps. However today I've encountered a situation where the output from the cat utility got redirected to the console input so I got ...

Chat Micro-Golf! Given two points with integer coordinates (a,b), (c,d) give a truthy value if they're orthogonally adjacent and a falsy value otherwise.

5:58 PM
Maybe I'm reading it wrong, but you mean something like max(abs(a-c),abs(b-d))==1 ?

@Geobits that doesn't really work I think

Oh, right, diagonals.

Is orthogonally adjacent the same as orthogonal?

It's like kitty corner
In terms of a grid

@Dennis it means that the manhattan distance is 1

6:00 PM
@MartinBüttner sigh! you should have sandboxed this question

Dennis should have sandboxed his answer.

@Geobits in case of diagonal, it will be max(1,1) no ?

Right, but diagonal isn't orthogonal.

oh!

It needs one 1, one 0.

6:02 PM
abs(a-c)+abs(b-d)==1

I've never tried standing on Uranus. Sounds like a delicate balancing act.

Pringles are excellent fuel. Loads of calories.

Not if the chips are aerodynamic enough

6:50 PM
@orlp what is it ?

@Optimizer a demo?

for ..
I mean to ask if there is a context behind it?

Is there a context behind anything?

It's all about how orlp's life got flipped, turned upside down

@Optimizer that it's really fucking cool?

6:51 PM
Why would there need to be context for a demo?

yes, what is "that"

@AlexA. I'd like to take a minute, just sit right there
@Optimizer a demo

If it's on Android it definitely needs a Context.

The demoscene is an international computer art subculture that specializes in producing demos: small, self-contained computer programs that produce audio-visual presentations. The main goal of a demo is to show off programming, artistic, and musical skills. The demoscene's roots are in the home computer revolution of the late 1970s, and the subsequent advent of software cracking. Crackers illegally distributed video games, adding introductions of their own making ("cracktros"), and soon started competing for the best presentation. The making of intros and standalone demos eventually evolved into...

I don't like pringles. They're just potato mush formed into curvy shapes. No actual potato structure.

Well, ideally I mean something that tastes like it's not vomit also.
Seriously, oatmeal is terrible.

Sad fool
Cream of wheat works too

The only way to eat oatmeal is to load it with extras so it doesn't taste like oatmeal. Kinda like grits or cream of wheat.

6:59 PM
well, milk helps too

> Sure they taste great, but have you ever considered the aerodynamics of a Pringles chip? Tom Lange has. As director of modeling and simulation at Procter & Gamble Co., it's Lange's job to use finite element analysis to predict what something will smell like, whether a bottle will break, and if a Pringles chip will take flight. "We break things into a million little parts and then write simple math equations about how each little part affects the other parts," says Lange, who is responsible for the economic, as well as structural, analysis of different materials.
