@Mego Float.

@Katenkyo Or that "fuck" is still censored at all. Or that censoring exists at all.

@mınxomaτ Brainfuck is a complete name, and fuck is not used in a 18+ meaning. It just means it is blowing your minds to write in it

@Katenkyo No shit sherlock :P

While I can understand why it has been censored, I still find it isn't bad how it was
Actually, brainfuck was totally fine for most of us, it's just that it's bad for the network to let the work "fuck" in our internet references

@mınxomaτ Fuck you, Watson :P

Hello @PhiNotPi

Hi

me: oh no, i think my code doesn't work for certain inputs that i forgot to test for!
me: *tests code*
me: nope, it works. my code is more robust than i thought :)

Robust by accident?

exactly
i thought my UUID validator would return True for AAAAAAAA--AAAA-AAAA-AAAA-AAAAAAAAAAAA
but then when i tested it i remembered how str.split() works
we're all good

@TimmyD That paint skill :)

I am a jelly doughnut.

You look like a cyclops

2:44 PM
@Rainbolt is frozen :o

Nope, jelly doughnut.

My daughter just stuffed a mango in the exhaust pipe of my wife's car.

Your daughter is either very angry, very young, or not very smart
I'm hoping one of the first two, so as to avoid insulting your daughter

@Doorknob冰 I've been playing Neopets recently so this made me really concerned because my brain translates "frozen" to "banned" :o

2:45 PM
I'd blame the age.

Remind me again - do you have to claim your interest from the Neopets bank regularly, or does it just accumulate?
If it just accumulates, then I might have a sizable sum of money

I have a tough decision to make. Do I keep this boat on my head, or do I wear the Batman hat?

I used to buy a stock that was low, then post on the message boards that it was about to skyrocket because of [insert stupid reason here].
Everyone would proceed to buy that stock, and then I would sell and buy another one

Wow, I forgot about my Neopets.

@Rainbolt you have to claim it daily, sadly
@Rainbolt iirc this kind of abuse was fairly common so nowadays the stocks go up and down independent of how much they get purchased

2:52 PM
So now it's literally gambling, as opposed to an opportunity for social manipulation?

stocks also never go bankrupt
so it's not so much gambling as it is "literally free neopoints you just have to wait"

@quartata Thanks for that! :-) It's still evolving, but reasonably stable

you're not allowed to buy stocks that are selling for less than 15np a share and you're only allowed to buy 1000 shares a day
so you buy 1000 of a stock at 15np
and as long as you never sell below 15np you never lose money

re: the brainfuck discussion: The use of "munging" (an admin-approved synonym for censorship) does nothing but make computer programs unable to understand what it means. Us normal humans have no issue with filling in the blank in Brainf_ck. Those same programs don't look at the context when they complain about "naughty words".

Anonymous
I propose an alternative: we censor the programs and programmers that think English is a context-free language. The amount of wrongness in that belief is so astounding, Alex seems reliable by comparison. Think of the children! We must protect them from such dangerous incorrectness!

2:58 PM
> Alex seems reliable
I agree - down with context.

@FlagAsSpam You still have the same problem, but now magnified because the ulps for floats in [0, 10) are much larger than [0, 1), and they grow exponentially.

i've seen this:
and i've also seen
1. You can't win.
2. You can't break even.
3. You have to play
and i don't know the actual laws so i don't know which is more correct

Anonymous
3:27 PM
@undergroundmonorail They're both partially correct, in that they state 3 out of the 4 laws

Anonymous
Well, the second one states all 4, but combines 2 and 3 into #2

i did not know there were more than 3 :O

Anonymous
There are 3 main ones, but most of the time a "0th Law" is referenced

that's the one where you can't harm humanity or through inaction allow humanity to come to harm, yes?

1. A thermodynamic process can never output more energy than what is inputted.
2. A thermodynamic process can only be 100% efficient (equal energy out and in) at absolute zero.
3. It is impossible to reach absolute zero through thermodynamic processes.

0. Everything is a thermodynamic process.

ohh, okay
neat
so it's like

Anonymous
So:

1. You can't win
2-3. You can't break even
0. You have to play
which is less funny but more accurate

Anonymous
1. You can't win in thermodynamics (get more out than you put in with a thermodynamic process)
2. You can only break even at T=0 (perfect efficiency at absolute zero)
3. You can't reach T=0 (through thermodynamic processes)
0. You have to play (everything is a thermodynamic process)

I have no clue what username, password, or email account I used.

I tried recovering usernames for a bunch of email accounts, but it returns no results.
And I also can't find any neopets emails in my email accounts.

My neopets account hasn't been logged into in 14 years (unless hackers), so it probably got purged

Is there any type of co-op / etc. way that PPCG people can get together on Neopets?

@Mego There's stuff like Minecraft Factions or Guild Wars, although I've played neither.

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ I wonder... What type of oral do you have in french in other countries? Some discussion about random stuff?

3:57 PM
@PhiNotPi Factions could work.

@Katenkyo I wonder as well. Huh!

@PhiNotPi Alternatively we pick a game none of us have played and see how long it takes us to completely dominate

@Mego never played factions actually.
oh, I see.

@quartata You have a typo in your profile.

@Katenkyo I'm confused. ^_^ My brain is dead

so which faction should we invade?

@anOKsquirrel The PPCG Minecraft server. Though I don't think it has factions.

@RikerW no, which factions server? :p

4:16 PM
@anOKsquirrel All of them.

@RikerW which one first?

@anOKsquirrel I don't know.
Stop asking me all the questions.

okay, let's pick one at random
Archon. Totally random 100% lefit.

@anOKsquirrel Is there a minecraft server named "4"? That would work.

4:18 PM
@RikerW wat

Is Archon deathban?

@RikerW This one always work, it even appeared in a answer on this site ^^

@anOKsquirrel Okay. Saw something like "Deathban Unban fee" in the shop.

there is a hardcore one, I think.

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ Don't know java that well, won't that always give 20? I have a feeling that is the joke.

I'll join there when I have time to play mc
@RikerW thatsthejoke.png

I'm joining the Archon

4:22 PM
okay. which factions game? there's 12 i think

Are you on the server right now?

no D:
cannot right now.

@PhiNotPi Are you?

ill be on in a few hours.

4:25 PM
@RikerW will be any integer in range [0;20[/]

@Katenkyo Okay. I am awful at java.
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ Me neither. Buddies!
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ Wait, do you know perl?

none

4:26 PM
okay.

I'm standing near the colored portals

@PhiNotPi If there is a hot pink one, join that one.

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ Math.random return a floating value in range[0;1] or [0;1[ (don't remember)

why?
okay I gtg now.
I'll be on archon in a few hours buy
bye*

So you're basically flooring a value between 0 and 20

4:27 PM
So is The Nineteenth Byte being used as teamspeak for minecraft now??

@Katenkyo So 20 * random = a random natural number in [0,20]?

@anOKsquirrel Okay, goodbye. Hope we meet again before archon dies.

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ yes

@Katenkyo So it works

4:28 PM
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ not really for a constant number, but yes :D

@Katenkyo Can't you just do Math.Random.range(0,20) or something?

@RikerW no ^^

@Katenkyo That is weird.

@RikerW as in C, you have to play with the value it returned ^^

I can imagine just flooring it, but is there a way to get like a float in between 0 and 20?

4:30 PM
@RikerW Math.random()*20; ^^

@Katenkyo Perfect. Then the joke works

Anonymous
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ [0,20) if we're being pedantic

@Katenkyo Java apparently needs more builtins.

@Mego I dunno Java \_(~_~)_/

@RikerW Java's mentality is "less built-in" ^^'
They refused to implement Pairs/Tuple only because it was easy to implement, and not sufficiently generic to pay attention to it

4:32 PM
@Katenkyo less builtin, but they more than make up for it with the amount of words and letters you have to type :)

@Katenkyo Not really :P

As I noted above, rand()*n is not a good way of getting a value from Uniform(0,n) (and not just because the endpoint is missing). The larger your n, the less uniform it gets.

@Mego i agree with that, but in most case, it's sufficient

@Katenkyo Plus it is shorter, and golfing comes before uniform distribution.

^

Anonymous
@RikerW Not when an exact probability is specified; that's how you get invalid answers

Anonymous
4:40 PM
Math.ulp(20) is about 10 times larger than Math.ulp(1). So, with Math.random()*20, you get duplicate values for about 10% of the possible outputs. Suddenly, your 90% isn't 90% anymore.

@Mego I this case you just pick a language with a bad PRNG anyway and you're done ^^

Anonymous
@Katenkyo That doesn't solve the problem, though

@RikerW There's factions red blue green orange white black cyan purple crimson gold and platinum.

@PhiNotPi Well, I am picking platinum. Screw pink.
Do they have electrum instead? :P

Anonymous
If you want to have an outcome with a specific probability, you need to be picking a random variable from a uniform distribution

4:44 PM
@Mego sure, but once again, I only said "in most cases". I never said you weren't right ^^

I need to leave for a little bit

And I need to leave for a long bit
Bye everyone !

@FlagAsSpam They do in Java 8

@Mego But they're no argument, and you'd end up with the same multiply issue.

@FlagAsSpam Which is what I pointed out ;P

what multiply issue?
oh, that you would need to multiply it to fit in a range?

Yus.

@Optimizer Again, not quite, but closer to uniform. There's a tradeoff: either it's not uniform because it's biased towards 0, or it's not uniform because there are some values that you can't get as output (because you tried to fix the bias).
