11:00 PM
-_-

which came from where?

Hi guys

@Doorknob Fortunately, on the internet, nobody knows you're a doorknob.

@anOKsquirrel NodeJS

I just found a program I wrote when I was 9.

11:01 PM
@Doorknob nice

It's a batch file for clearing the screen.

@feersum I lost the one I wrote when I was 7

It works by writing 10 empty lines to a batch file in the C:\ directory with a for loop
Then it calls that file 5 times with another for loop

@anOKsquirrel I feel old.

Then it deletes the batch file of empty lines

11:02 PM
nice
can't you just cls?

How did all of you start programming so young???

I am sad. I just deleted a program from when I was 8 by emptying my trash.

I didn't write a line of code until I was 18 and even then I didn't know what I was doing.

Nuuu

@AlexA. For me, it was Batchman.

11:03 PM
I didn't know about cls, if it existed

I didn't search enough.

I didn't use search engines either

@AlexA. What lang did you start with?

@AlexA. For me, I was using my TI-84

@Dennis I think you've told me before but I can't recall: How old were you when you started programming?

11:03 PM
When I was 9 I would try to discover new commands by typing random words and seeing if anything ahppened.

My computer apparently doesn't have the clip utility.

@AlexA. Then BATCH, then Javascript
@feersum :D mt

@feersum Same.
In bash (os x terminal)

@RikerW Visual Basic for Applications at work. I was using it to automate processes in MS Access.

11:04 PM
bash

I started with Scratch, then Javascript.

> bash (os x terminal)
ಠ_ಠ

@Doorknob OS X Terminal.app is best way to use Bash

I once wrote a VBA script for my mac, before realizing it was only for windows.

lel

11:04 PM
@AlexA. He is right.

@AlexA. ಠ_ಠ ಠ_ಠ

@AlexA. I got my first computer when I was 6. I started writing batch scripts shortly after that.
2

@Dennis Damn, son.

you started with batch?!
I used a BASIC variation

Oops, i meant to agree with @AlexA. . Sorry doorknob.

11:05 PM
@RikerW So you're a Mac user? OS X is best OS.

And linux.

I prefer OS Y.

@anOKsquirrel Well, MS-DOS was a little difficult to use without batch scripts...

I use Wandoze.
@Dennis oh welp

Pet peeve: When people call OS X "MacOS." It hasn't been MacOS since like 1998. ಠ_ಠ
@anOKsquirrel Don't

11:06 PM
@SuperJedi224 I did Scratch second, actually. I did basic first. Scratch is a great way to learn to program

@AlexA. What are you talking about? I use my MacOS all the time!

@Dennis I also started programming at 6 with Perl

@AlexA. I game a lot so that's why I haven't switched

Explains my obsession with it I suppose

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ I know you're trolling because you've mentioned before that you use Windows 8.
2

11:07 PM
@AlexA. Whaaat? Everyone knows I use a Netscape.

I know I wrote a Java program in 7th grade, so I must've been around 13-14 at the time.

@AlexA. System it is.

my father was a perl programmer my grandfather was a perl programmer my great-grandfather was a perl programmer my great-great-grandfather was a perl programmer...

@quartata

@anOKsquirrel You can do what my girlfriend and I do. Get a Mac, set up a Bootcamp partition for Windows that has everything but Steam removed, and just boot into Windows as needed.

11:09 PM
@AlexA. Can I run my perl-hater bot for about a minute in here?

I have Java programs on my computer from 2007. 15 years old at that time.

@AlexA. but macs suck

I don't like java.
@anOKsquirrel Offense taken

Me neither.

11:09 PM
@RikerW I'll defer to @Dennis and @Doorknob.
@anOKsquirrel Incorrect.

It was one of the first languages I tried to learn, though. The other being C++, which was doomed from the start. :P

@RikerW Why not?

I must be the only person in this room that likes both Java and Windows

@Doorknob, Can I run my perl-hater bot for about a minute in here?

@AlexA. Your statement stating I was incorrect was not correct.

11:10 PM
@NathanMerrill You're not.

@NathanMerrill I like Java, but I'm bad at it

@anOKsquirrel Thank you.

@NathanMerrill I despise Windows but I don't mind Java. (Haven't used it enough to really have an opinion on it.)

@RikerW I was referring to a different comment, the hate java one

Well, it turned out better this way.

11:11 PM
Then I actually learned TI-BASIC, and then I got a "Game Programming for Teens" book, whereby I learned Blitz Basic, then "3D Game Programming for Teens" half a year later taught me Blitz 3D, then my brother introduced me to Python and Project Euler about half a year after that...
He also introduced me to Blender.

I like blender.

Project Euler is how I learn python.

I've used Linux (Arch, Chakra, and Mint) and Macs pretty extensively

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ Same.

11:12 PM
but windows is still my favorite

@RikerW What do you think of these?

One thing I don't particularly like about windows is that it always attempts to open javascript files in Windows Script Host. I could probably configure it not to, but I haven't gotten around to it yet.

lol yeah

@El'endiaStarman Okay. You win by a very large margin.
@El'endiaStarman I'm not very good.

Ha, there's no "winning" here.
Only time and practice.

11:13 PM
also, notepad++ is windows

Only Golfing.^^

@NathanMerrill notepad++ is amazing and practical'

@NathanMerrill ಠ___ಠ

What comes next in this sequence? 00000,11111,01111,10111,00111,11011,01011,10011,00011,11101,01101,10101,00101,1‌1001,01001,10001,00001

I've used so many text editors, and they either require a high learning curve, or are buggy

11:14 PM
I like TextWrangler

@NathanMerrill atom.io

sublime is good

@AlexA. buggy

False

sublime is my second favorite

11:14 PM
At least not on Mac

@anOKsquirrel also, how did I get this sequence?

the base editor doesn't have bugs

@RikerW The difference between "not very good" and "good" is pretty much just playing with it. Note that the time between the first image on that page and the last image is five years. Five years of making something every now and then, and pushing the limits of what I could do, Googling whatever I needed or wanted to know.

but the majority of the plugins I want to use do

@anOKsquirrel 0110

11:15 PM
@RikerW nope, why would you guess that?

@El'endiaStarman Okay, fear not, for I will be valient and continue.

also, atom likes to get unresponsive all the time (on both Mac and Windows for me)

That's odd. Never happens for me.

It actually crashed Firefox when I used it.

@anOKsquirrel bc I googled it and found a sequence like it here.

11:17 PM
@AlexA. it always happens when I haven't used it for a while, and try to switch back to it

@RikerW I found it out in Minecraft, but I made a python program to do it. want to see?

0101

11110

@anOKsquirrel Sure.

sorry
@RikerW k

11:17 PM
it takes forever to respond

@anOKsquirrel Binary, but reversed and complemented. Starting at 31 and adding 1 repeatedly.

@anOKsquirrel if you reverse and flip the bits, it's just counting up

@El'endiaStarman is that actually it? I found it out in a different way.

ninja'd, damn

@NathanMerrill Notepad is neither.

11:18 PM
that's how I found it out

@anOKsquirrel because there are infinite amounts of graphs that pass through a finite set of points, any number is valid

@NathanMerrill true

@anOKsquirrel Did you just boot up minecraft and take a screenshot right now?

11:19 PM
@anOKsquirrel overacheiver

@RikerW yeah, why?
@RikerW that's how I found the sequence.

@anOKsquirrel I honestly don't know. That was a random word that popped into my head.

Using WolframAlpha usually ends up with me getting progressively more and more frustrated at its attempts to be "smart" until I just end up inputting Mathematica expressions into it, thereby defeating the purpose of using WolframAlpha

@RikerW lol
I'm in space.

By the way, @RikerW, given your profile picture, you might be interested in my Exploring and Understanding Hyperbolic Geometry blog series.

11:21 PM
@quartata lol

anyways, going to go rest now. I'm sick so yeah
bye

bye! hope you feel better.

@El'endiaStarman cool i'll look into it. It is my cat fractalized. (the picture)

thanks :)

@anOKsquirrel Goodbye, sir.

11:21 PM
doxxes with the cat picture
bye

@anOKsquirrel Bye.

@RikerW It's not so much "fractalized" (which is kinda true) as it is hyperbolic geometry. Did you make it with an online editor/program? I think I've seen a couple.

@El'endiaStarman Yes, and I have been trying to find the program I made it with for a while. If you know where, let me know.

@NathanMerrill This, while technically true, is almost never the right answer.

in Beep Boop Maggot, 17 mins ago, by Thatha
<Papyrus> @Thatha You're blue now.

11:25 PM
^^ and ^

Apparently my own bot tried to silent ping itself
30 minutes until my mortarboard wears off
se pls

you at a graduation?
4

Took me a second to get that

@quartata 32 minutes

then what did that mean? You mean motherboard?

11:27 PM
I need mortarboard XD

Try throwing it into the air. It may wear off faster that way.
2

Oh, mortarboard is the 200 rep per day cap on SE

Did you not know what it meant?

Nope.

11:28 PM
Oh.
Unintentional joke is best joke
2

True.

11:40 PM
\o/ mortarboard!

Yay!
Excellent timing too.

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ I have to say it. That is one weird emoticon.

@RikerW It is.

Quick question about this

A: Sandbox for Proposed Challenges

quartataGrocery Store Micromanagement You are an employee at the hip new grocery store Half Foods, and it's the day before Thanksgiving. Since the store will be packed with customers rushing to get their turkeys, pumpkin pies and/or lentil loaves, the store needs a traffic manager to send everyone to th...

Would it be better if empty spots on the grids were periods?
As it is right now, there's a mixture of spaces in newlines (some rows aren't complete) which makes it strange

11:50 PM
This is way outdated. It's already December; Thanksgiving is gone and forgotten.

@AlexA. I'll just change it to Christmas.
Problem solved.

Okay

Any actual answers?
:P

But no one eats turkey, pumpkin pie, or lentil loaves for Christmas.

> ham
Problem solved.

11:52 PM
Yeah periods would be nice.
@quartata Not everyone eats ham on Christmas.

I do.

RikerW != Everyone

@AlexA. Hmph.
I'll just say "comestibles."

What in the world does that mean

co·mes·ti·ble
kəˈmestəbəl
noun
plural noun: comestibles
an item of food.
"a fridge groaning with comestibles"

11:54 PM
It sounds like a medical problem, especially in the example.

Anybody got advice for mine? link

> "a fridge groaning with comestibles"
Oh right, I have to take a final exam in an hour. I haven't studied.

@AlexA. !

Say goodbye to your grades.

@Dennis Kick-mute Alex so he can study

11:56 PM
I calculated that even if I get 75% on the final, I'll still get 85% in the class.

^^

Besides, it's grad school; grades don't really matter.
As long as you pass.

@AlexA. What if you get a 100?
Then what will your grade be?

@RikerW Idk. Good.

How much is the final exam of your grade?

11:57 PM
20%

100%
Iɴ ʙɪɴᴀʀʏ :P

Got to go now late bye.

I should also probably imbibe in some comestibles first.

11:58 PM
@RikerW Bai

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ That's 4%.

@quartata I could do that too...

@quartata Yeah

@quartata Yeah

Wait, there is no kick-mute option for mods. Nevermind...

11:59 PM
@El'endiaStarman There isn't?
