......so...because I was thinking about how to parse commands from program text, I figured out how to golf Blitz 2D/3D code even further. I don't actually need newlines most of the time. o.o
What was

Function circ(x,y,r, f=0)
    Oval x-r,y-r,2*r+1,2*r+1,f
End Function

is now

Function circ(x,y,r, f=0)Oval x-r,y-r,2*r+1,2*r+1,f End Function

@El'endiaStarman Seems like it just amounts to trying all groups of n hands and piping them to LCM

@quintopia Whiiiich ain't that easy. :P
Calculating all groupings is O(2^n) where you have n elements.
(Pascal's triangle FTW!)

@El'endiaStarman It's only O(aCn) to look at all sets of size n from a set of size a.
Which is O(2^(a-2)) at most...

Yeah, but synching 5 hands could mean 5 or 2+3...
It's O(2^n) as n gets large.
Y'see, I have an idea for an algorithm based on prime factorizations. However, it's possible to have [2,2,1,1] (where 6 are needed) so you get the LCM of the single hands in order to have [2,2,2], which fulfills the requirements.

Wait... what? I thought we needed 5 hands to all align /with each other/?

9:08 PM
Nope!
You can have 2 that align and a separate group of 3 that align.

oof
nvm then

@quintopia Whiiiich ain't that easy. :P
:P
It's a fascinating problem, to me.

I miss this guy
His Shakespeare submissions are legendary

@AlexA. Basically I believe.... in peace... and bashing two bricks together

...
wut

9:30 PM
His profile picture is a Gumby from Monty Python's Flying Circus.

Ohhhh haha
I figured the picture was from Monty Python but I'm not all that familiar with it

Amazon oneboxes? Why?

@AlexA. Why not?

9:35 PM
@AlexA. I didn't even notice they oneboxed 0_0
Why

@quartata I have seen this
@quartata but not this
:P

@Doorknob This was a TV show, which is why you haven't seen it
@Doorknob Good

@quartata Why does the fact that it was a TV show imply that Doorknob wouldn't have seen it?
I've seen Monty Python's Flying Circus
@quartata I have seen this also but not in many, many years.

@AlexA. Because it hasn't been on air in 40 years and the Megaton set is very expensive (but also very worth it)

@Doorknob Seems unnecessary. Idk.
@quartata Good thing Doorknob is 56 and British.

9:43 PM
Has anyone written stackexchange chat bots?

yes

has anyone written an irc server that bridges chat.stackexchange.com in its entirety?

There's probably many more but those are the two that I'm aware of

Well... that was.... strange...

Indeed.
Did you push the changes yet? :3

@quartata Yeah, it's almost like you signed in with your sock account, said some random shit, signed out, and claimed you didn't know what happened.

does anyone keep "drunk socks"

Um what

@AlexA. Well, you're the expert :P

ಠ_ಠ

9:48 PM
to sign in when you're drunk so that people will know know not to ask you about what you said later

Hahahaha
That's a genius idea
Do you have one of those?

I'd have one. Except I can't drink.

Well you can
You are physically able to

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ pushed

@quartata Danke
@AlexA. Can't, as in, socially.

9:49 PM
But you choose to abide by federal and state laws. :P

@AlexA. For shame.

Now that I've learned-ish very basic Perl, the next logical step is to write a golfing language / esolang in it. :D

@AlexA. Well consumption of anything is legal in most parts of the world. Only posession or trade get you into trouble

I'm back guys

Now, how to consume something without possessing it is the hard part.

9:50 PM
@mınxomaτ You are technically correct. (The best kind of correct.)
That's what I was just about to mention. :P

@mınxomaτ Underage consumption of alcohol is illegal in parts of the US.

@mınxomaτ install a teleporter in your throat. have someone shoot alcohol into it with a squirt gun so it never touches your body.

Q: Drawing Lewis Structures of Alkanes

Thomas OltmannI just had a lesson in school about alkanes and figured it would probably make for a great code golf challenge! Don't worry, it isn't as complicated as it may look! A Quick Rehash (Please Note: To keep this brief, not all information is 100% accurate.) Alkanes are strings of carbon and hydroge...

@Doorknob You could contribute to Element or Phi's Golfo Supreme. :P

Oh god this is giving me OChem flashbacks

Oh hey I found @IlmariKaronen on WWW: c2.com/cgi/wiki?PerlGolf :P

@AlexA. thank you

I've also seen him on the Nethack newsgroup and wiki and all over SE. He's basically everywhere.

@quintopia What
@Doorknob Everywhere but here.

You mean in chat? I've seen him around a few times :P

9:53 PM
I have as well
But he isn't here now and he hasn't been in recently enough for his name to autocomplete.

I wish you could ping yourself.

you can
@Doorknob watch this

@AlexA. Having drunk alcohol makes you in possession of it. Your body literally contains it. The only way to consume it without possessing is to have it begin to enter your body and then teleport it away.

@Doorknob That's because you have super ping powers.

no it's not

9:55 PM
@quartata I do that from time to time when I reply to an earlier message.

Is one in possession of the contents of one's stomach?

@Doorknob You can also ping yourself in the future.
Like so.

@AlexA. of course

@quartata Nope, message permalink number.

Oh.
@quartata Interesting.
Ah, I see.

9:56 PM
Ta-da! :)

Chat isn't as well programmed as I thought.

I think it's programmed just fine.

@quartata why not?

@AlexA. See legal-dictionary.thefreedictionary.com/possession under "actual possession".

Not enough jQuery

9:57 PM
I mean, if it is supposed to not let you reply to yourself it should sanity check the reply numbers
I think that's an arbitrary restriction though

But it's not supposed to not let you reply to yourself.

@quintopia Mind blown

@El'endiaStarman @quartata - if that were the case, I wouldn't be able to do this. Which can be useful sometimes.

@Doorknob Really..?
I'm confused now.

Why would it not let you reply to yourself?

9:58 PM
@Doorknob Because you don't get a reply button by your own posts, and you can't ping yourself with normal means.

Yes, but there's no reason to prevent it entirely.

They're changing the way pinging (not replying AFAIK) works. Soon it will be by user ID, not by username. So @[id] rather than @Doorknob.
Which means we will no longer be able to do stuff like Scooby @Doo.

:25594876 I wonder if this works.

@quartata I thought it did. :P

10:00 PM
Internally, though. You'd still see their username in the message.

Huh, I thought it went up by three each time.

@AlexA. Wait what? Really?

@quartata Nope!
That's sequential for every message in every chat room.

@VoteToClose I was trying to make it reply to itself

@Doorknob Yes. Read about it on Meta.SE recently and mentioned it in here once before (I think).

10:00 PM
@El'endiaStarman !
Little trickier then.

@quartata Get the permalink number.

@El'endiaStarman Yes
But it'll use full names and avatars will appear next to names

@AlexA. Wow. I really haven't been caught up on MSE news lately.

Me neither, I just happened upon it

@AlexA. Complained, you mean. :P

10:01 PM

@Doorknob Are you missing a chair?

No, I just golfed it away
too many bytes

I'm an idiot

So much self-deprecation in this room

So any golfing language / esolang ideas lying around that I can use for my Perl language? :P

10:05 PM
@AlexA. I suspect you'll still be able to type "@Doo", it will just get translated to id once it's submitted

@Doorknob Layers.

@Doorknob Yeah, but don't use Perl.

@AlexA. D:
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ Layers of... what?

@Sparr Probably

@Doorknob Anything.

10:07 PM
Do we really not have a challenge to do what uniq(1) does yet?

@Doorknob Dobosh
(Hungarian cake)

I Googled that and it looks delicious

@Doorknob Depends. What does uniq(1) do?

Outputs all unique lines.

@Doorknob My grandma is part Hungarian and she makes a killer dobosh. Haven't had it in many years though.
Actually it might be spelled dobash
No, I think dobosh
Idk

10:10 PM
It's Dobosh. c:
The sponge cake, ya?

Are you Hungarian?

No, but I have Hungarian friends.

@VoteToClose Uh I don't know about sponge, but it's a bunch of thin layers of very eggy cake.

^ Yes.

What is sponge cake?

10:13 PM
Just means sponge like consistency. It tends not to have much fat/butter put into it.

Oh, okay.

Dobos torte or Dobosh (pronounced [ˈdoboʃ], Hungarian: Dobos torta) is a Hungarian sponge cake layered with chocolate buttercream and topped with caramel. The five-layer pastry is named after its inventor, Hungarian confectioner József C. Dobos, who aimed to create a cake that would last longer than other pastries in an age when cooling techniques were limited. The round sides of the cake are coated with ground hazelnuts, chestnuts, walnuts, or almonds, and the caramel topping helps keep it from drying out. The name is also sometimes spelled Dobos-torta or Dobostorta. == HistoryEdit == Dobosh...

@AlexA. tasty

@VoteToClose Interesting. My family never put caramel on the top.
@Doorknob Oh, okay.

I know way too much about cake. XD
It's just too good to be ignored.

10:22 PM
I tend to avoid baking cakes. Too much work.
And mine never turn out well because I have to make too many substitutions.

I bake. Then proceed not to get any of it. ಠ_ಠ

...Where does it go?

My family/friends/neighbors/random guy in my house/guests.

Random guy in your house?

I don't question it. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

10:24 PM
Uh... alright...
So there's literally just some random person living in your house and you don't know why?

Of course not. -.- 'Twas a joke. xD

I mean, there's this random guy following me on all my family vacations and I don't question that...

So, Doorknob, how does it feel to have the most starred item in all of chat.SE history?

Speaking of which, I wonder when that will finally be automagically unpinned. It's been there for a while. :P

New band name I call it
@Doorknob Can I repin it in hopes that it will someday overtake chat.SO's record? :D

Hello all!

10:28 PM
Hi

Here's a lesson I learned during the last days: Never attempt to implement a custom scrollbar.

I can link in flikr pages, yeah?

What are flikr pages, yeah?

@Doorknob there are a lot of coreutils that we haven't reproduced as challenges on PPCG

10:30 PM
That was the search result for "unintended mustache".

@Sparr Yes, but "output unique lines" is pretty simple, so I would have assumed that it exists already

most of them have "pretty simple" default operations

the name of ESMin is messed up whenever it is posted... it has those weird characters...

@Sparr /shrug

@VoteToClose Aw, it's Bus Hitler.

10:31 PM
We've been having a bunch of "solve N different problems at once" contests lately
I wonder if "golf busybox" would be a challenge anyone would take up...

@TanMath Blackboard bold. I think it doesn't render in some browsers.

that is, golf a default (no options) implementation of every coreutil

@Sparr That would be interesting.

that might finally get to the point that people reuse some code. it annoys me that most of the multi challenges people just add together different solutions

10:32 PM
@AlexA. yeah, i think it doesn't render in most browsers.. Why are we not doing anything about it? I guess the author of the language wants it to be known as the "blank squares language"!

probably not every coreutil... maybe just the ones that take and produce textual data

Well you're allowed to call your own language whatever you want.

@TanMath Eh. It's his language, he can do whatever he wants with it. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@Doorknob Ninja'd

Unless it's like... offensive or otherwise inappropriate

I think I'm going to sandbox this challenge

10:33 PM
Golf me a compgen -c!

@Doorknob true... but his language has a plain-text version... That would be better...

@Doorknob See: brainfuck.

@TanMath "Better" is subjective in this case.

@AlexA. why?

@VoteToClose that's not abusive
Profanity is... ehhhh, but it's not like we can just change the language name at this point.

10:35 PM
@VoteToClose Brainfuck is a name. One can choose to take offense to it but it's not being used in an offensive context.

is there a term for golfs where there are multiple holes/challenges?

I just read through the Syzygy challenge. I remembered we had something about the Lonely Runner conjecture and wanted to post it as related. When I searched for it, I didn't find anything. So I searched meta for a sandbox proposal. Still nothing. So I thought maybe someone brought it up in chat and searched the chat messages in here. Someone did bring it up once... I did... -.-

@Doorknob According to some people, it is...?

Apparently someone created this tag
the name is horrible though

10:35 PM
@AlexA. Yeah, good point. :P

@AlexA. ninja'd

I think this is called dissociative fugue...

^ This is correct. :D

@VoteToClose eh, I wouldn't trust the guy who asked that question :P

@TanMath He probably likes the blackboard bold better and you would prefer plain ASCII, which makes the use of "better" subjective. ;)

10:36 PM
@Sparr "bad idea"

haha

Dissociative fugue, formerly fugue state or psychogenic fugue, is a DSM-5 Dissociative Disorder. It is a rare psychiatric disorder characterized by reversible amnesia for personal identity, including the memories, personality, and other identifying characteristics of individuality. The state is usually short-lived (ranging from hours to days), but can last months or longer. Dissociative fugue usually involves unplanned travel or wandering, and is sometimes accompanied by the establishment of a new identity. It is no longer its own classification or diagnosis as it was in the DSM-IV, but now a facet...
I'm so glad that three-finger taps lookup through Wikipedia as well as the dictionary. xD

@VoteToClose This is the first time I've heard of this three-finger tapping. :O

@MartinBüttner why a bad idea? will the holes be too similar to each other? or reproduce existing standalone challenges?

10:39 PM
That's bananas

@Sparr unless there is some interesting interaction between the challenges, I don't think there is any benefit over posting the challenges separately, and it causes a few problems.

@AlexA. There are some really cool trackpad builtins in Mac. :D

I've been meaning to make a meta post to suggest making them off topic for a few weeks, but I didn't get around to it yet

I'm pretty sure you can tie AppleScript events to them, as well.

@MartinBüttner lack of interesting interaction between the challenges is what has bothered me most about all the multiple-hole challenges up until now. eveyrone just keeps solving them separately and adding up the totals. I expect to see code reuse in this one!

10:40 PM
@MartinBüttner What about Dennis' code golf decathlon? That was pretty fun...

@AlexA. in what way was it more fun than 10 separate challenges would have been?

Yeah because each was too simple to be its own challenge, IMO anyway

how can you do i[1:] in pyth?

@TanMath What does that do in Python?

Remove the first character of a string

10:42 PM
@TanMath t

@Doorknob technically no

Well it doesn't modify the string of course.

@Dennis thanks, what about [2:]?

@AlexA. wasn't the only interaction that you had to use different languages?
I don't think that's sufficient

@Doorknob it gives you another list with the elements of index 1 to the end of the original one

10:45 PM
By interaction I mean things like not being able to use characters in multiple solutions, or related tasks where code could be reused between multiple solutions (e.g. my Kingdom Builder challenge)

@TanMath Probably tt, remove two

how does this guy even have a hat?!:

How?
Looks like he used Microsoft Paint to superimpose an image on his head

@TanMath tt?

@TanMath awesomeness

10:46 PM
@Dennis Ninja'd

@AlexA. ok.. if you want to have [5:], then it wouldn't be useful for golfing
@Dennis ok...
thanks to both of you!

@MartinBüttner I don't mean in terms of interaction. I just mean it was a fun challenge.

>[list]5 works to.

^

10:47 PM
@Dennis oh.. the > is needed?

@AlexA. some say code trolling was fun ;)

@MartinBüttner he already knows the hats for 2015?!

@TanMath Yes, it is.

@TanMath that hat's from... two years ago

@TanMath No, that's just his image
@MartinBüttner sigh okay

10:48 PM
@TanMath Btw, the Pyth compiler has a character reference on the right side / bottom.

@Dennis oh yeah... thanks!

@AlexA. The main problems it causes: a) the optimal tactic is stealing the shortest solutions for subtasks from other answers. b) it escapes the duplicate system.

wow, three consecutive messages to me, and another right after the next message!
I'm so famous! ;)
hehehe

@MartinBüttner Good points
