@Doorknob What do you think, being the author of the potential dupe target?
Oh hey, Julia 0.4 has been released!

@AlexA. It seems you are quite active as Julianist, based on your recent answers.
How do you manage not getting it mixed up with matlab/octave?

Easy--I don't use Matlab/Octave. :P
And not just recent answers. I think the majority of my answers are in Julia.
I've been following the project since version 0.2 which crashed a lot.

What's Julia like?
I think I've heard of it but never used it before.

It's like the greatest thing to exist.
Imagine Python if its syntax didn't suck.
Or Ruby if it worked.

@AlexA. them's fightin words

9:07 PM
Bring it.

@AlexA. This I understand.
I'll take a look at it.

Do it.

I'd love to find a decent language I can golf pretty well in a lot rather than what I'm doing now which is using a lot of different languages and not really doing that good

@quartata To me, it's not about winning. It's about learning and enjoying as you participate.

I like to golf in a variety of languages to learn them better.

9:14 PM
@mbomb007 I know, but but I'd still love to find one language I can always reach for.

@AlexA. Imagine Java if it wasn't Java.

That language is Java for me in normal programming.
Doesn't really work in code golf though.

@quartata Java 8 is better. Learn Python. I picked it up pretty quickly, and it's not as strict as Java.

@mbomb007 I do know Python.

Python is fine. I just dislike mandatory whitespace.

9:15 PM
One of the problems with Python however is that usually someone beats me to a Python answer :P

@quartata JavaScript?
@quartata I also recommend learning ><>. Just work on expanding how many languages you know. They'll get used at some point.

Hmm

Learn APL.

@AlexA. That's what I'm going to learn next ideally.

It's weird and has no practical use, but it looks pretty.

9:17 PM
It's very pretty.

Almost nobody else here golfs in Rust. :P

@mbomb007 ><> is actually a really cool language but it's very difficult to use in challenges that involve math.

@quartata Not much more difficult than any other basic stack-based language.
Learn Forth. Forth is fun.

as far as i'm aware, i'm one of two people who has ever used pb and the other one (again, as far as i'm aware) doesn't use this site

What's Forth?

9:18 PM
Sorry to brag, but

@undergroundmonorail What's PB?

@AlexA. The spec document is like 500 pages.

@ThomasKwa You are too good at TI-BASIC for me to try golfing in it.

i think that's the right url

WOOOOO! Second consecutive mortarboard!

9:19 PM
yeah i got it

Forth is an imperative stack-based computer programming language and programming environment. Language features include structured programming, reflection (the ability to modify the program structure during program execution), concatenative programming (functions are composed with juxtaposition) and extensibility (the programmer can create new commands). Although not an acronym, the language's name is sometimes spelled with all capital letters as FORTH, following the customary usage during its earlier years. A procedural programming language without type checking, Forth features both interactive...

@mbomb007 And? :P

@quartata Online interpreter here: repl.it/languages/forth

@mbomb007 That looks pretty interesting.

the problem with pb is that it's incredibly fragile

9:20 PM
@mbomb007 had to delete the Retina answer because we also need to print the number of spaces removed. feel free to post a working solution if you've got one

i never made an interpreter before and i coded it really poorly

@quartata I think I originally started learning it because the RedPower 2 Minecraft mod introduced a computer that runs MineOS, which is based on Forth.

printing something outside of the range [0, 256) crashes python

@quartata Post TI-BASIC anyway; I don't like to be the only one golfing in it.

malformed code crashes python

9:21 PM
Or maybe it was just straight-up Forth. I don't remember.

sometimes python just crashes

There are plenty of questions I don't attempt, and if you manage to outgolf me or have a particularly good answer I'll award a bounty.

actual code from the pb interpreter:
def expression(e):
	"""Return the result of an expression"""
	# TODO: make this not a piece of shit
	return eval(e, globals())
# Some might say using global variables for this purpose is bad practice.
# I think those people could stand to be a little bit more adventurous.

s/\t/ /

fun fact about pb: if you indent with spaces it calls you out on being an awful person and evaluates 1/0
3
for line in code.split('\n'):
	if line[0] == ' ':
		print 'stop doing this horrible thing'
		1/0

9:26 PM
@Doorknob Looks like we need to chat ban @undergroundmonorail and delete his account if he doesn't fix this terrible thing.

go ahead
make me a martyr
you'll only strengthen the cause

There shall be tabs!

Thanks

it's gross, i know
but you have to

What if there are leading spaces?

Aw, the line spacing makes it look terrible...

apparently i got auto-chatbanned just now for swearing but i swear all the time and it's never happened before
weird

@minxomat ...the writer is good.

9:35 PM
ty to whoever freed me though because it was supposed to be for half an hour

A while ago, whenever I made this, I copied it character-by-character from the credits of Portal.

@mbomb007 We do what we must, because, we can...

@El'endiaStarman What writer?

@minxomat GLaDOS
:D

@minxomat Thomas Lera, I would assume.

@undergroundmonorail Somebody flagged your message as offensive, and it got deleted by 10k users or a moderator.

You can see it right there ^

@Dennis weird, the message said it happened automatically

Yes, a valid "offensive" flag comes with an automatic suspension.

ohh, i see
so the flag and the 10k/mod confirming it were not automatic but the suspension was

@undergroundmonorail The flag might be automatic, but I don't think so. We talk about Brainfuck all the time and nothing happens. The confirmation certainly wasn't.

Who would have flagged that?

@Dennis His comment wasn't Brainfuck. I saw it.

probably someone who doesn't realize how horrible indenting with spaces is
@mbomb007 i think the idea was "if brainfuck doesn't get flagged then what you said shouldn't either"

Brainfuck is a language name. You actually swore.

9:44 PM
^ (automatically, that is)

So IMHO, it deserved the flag.

this is correct, but i swear often and to my knowledge it hasn't been flagged before

I'd like to point out that nobody really cares

@mbomb007 My physics teacher mentioned Forth today. Coincidence? I think not.

@VTCAKAVSMoACE Physics? How does that fit together? I'm not sure I'd enjoy doing physics on Forth.
@Doorknob Maybe not, but that doesn't make it right.

9:46 PM
No - he was talking about how it was the programming language he used before BASIC was cool.

But that does mean a flag is unjustified and should have been dismissed.
(unfortunately chat moderation is horribly broken and basically garbage)

ayyy
no one ever use the f word again

Which f word?

exactly
this is too important to give up

Even if a flag is unjustified, it's still up to users to improve their own "tongue" and language to a higher standard. IMHO, swearing is a sign of immaturity or lack of self-control.

9:48 PM
that's a totally valid opinion for you to have and i'm super allowed to disagree with it

Especially people who throw in the f-word as every other word. As if their vocabulary is so limited that they can't use another word.
We went to the f*in mall today, and f*in saw an f*in movie, etc etc

Q: About your f***ing website

Jeff AtwoodPresented for your enjoyment-slash-amusement. Email received by team@stackoverflow.com from Name Jesus Christ Almighty, what a f***ing mess of a website. I'm trying to post a question. Just the one, you know, f***ing question. So I sign up for an ID and I'm sent an email that doesn't real...

(reminded me of that)

@mbomb007 That's incredibly obnoxious, but not really offensive IMHO.
(Unless you're a mall or a movie.)

I have a character set bdeghijklmnpqsuvyz and a string. I want to find a string that uses each character of this set at most once.
Anyone know how to regex that?

I smell that the anagram generator died.

9:52 PM
@Dennis swearing is a sign of immaturity or lack of self-control
It doesn't always have to be offensive.

@VTCAKAVSMoACE You smelled correctly.

The flag button literally sags "flag as offensive"
I think. I'm on mobile

People don't even know how to insult anymore. They just say f** you, because they can't actually say anything intelligently insulting.

Oh my gosh... XD I just realized that when my grandad looks up my alias in google (which he will), there's a chance that he'll find the coding language. XD That would be terribly difficult to explain.

9:54 PM
@undergroundmonorail Well, I find swearing offensive when they just throw the word in because they can. It's offending the intelligence of us all.
@VTCAKAVSMoACE What language?

ShadyAsFuck - we're making it right now.

There should be a language called "Shwifty"

@mbomb007 You should anti-aliase that art.

@mbomb007 lmao what

Is that like Swift, but from East End?

9:56 PM
i don't know maybe i'm not parsing it right but i have no idea what this means

@VTCAKAVSMoACE Nah, it's a Rick & Morty reference.

the website to download the interpreter would be getshwifty.com
it's genius

Oh, okie. But that would be a good explanation.

@PhiNotPi You can and post what it looks like. I prefer the version that's contained in the credits.
@undergroundmonorail I tried thinking of other references or "lyrics" from the song to include, but I had forgotten about it until now
Anyways, I gtg. I might be on later, otherwise tomorrow.

^ Migrate to StackOverflow?

i doubt stackoverflow wants it tbh

^^

@Doorknob I thought that was a transcript at first.

10:04 PM
Do you guys like ever migrate to SO?

usually people who are capable of writing good questions for SO also know where they go
i'm sure it's happened though

Rarely. The OP has an SO account, so there's a decent chance he tried over there first.

yes, except you put "So, I could do..." at the beginning

Ah! Okay.

@NewMainPosts Lot of off topics today...

don't blame the bot
don't shoot the messenger

Nah nah it's OK robot!
I didn't mean it's your fault!
Anyways.
I just saw this challenge in the sandbox meta.codegolf.stackexchange.com/a/7152/45151
And thought of a really really good way to do it in Java..
I hope it gets posted.

10:26 PM
Nah. It's not his serverfault.

@undergroundmonorail I remember a time when the original was the most common version. Then someone made this way smoother version and it spread like wildfire.

@quartata Did you see my new Sandbox question (put it on "active" mode).

Q: Curse you Turing!!! Make a partial halting solver that yells at Turing when he tries to break it

PyRulezHere goes a quick proof by Alan Turing that there is no program H that can solve the halting problem. If there was, you could make a program X such that X(n) = if H(n,n) == Halt then output X(n) else output ":-)". What is the value of H(X,X)? Your job is to make a partial halting solver, such th...

@VTCAKAVSMoACE The Ulam Spiral one?
Yeah looks good.
You might want to consider writing a short explanation of how it works in case people don't want to look at that Wikipedia article you linked.

I'll add that in real quick, then. :)
Is that enough of an explanation, or should I put in more?

Q: 0x99 Bottles of Beer

evmcdeeWe have all heard of the classic 99 Bottles of Beer program before, or at least played it on a long road trip or plane flight. Today, I want to take a spin on things and add a bit of a twist. Prepare yourselves, for the time has come for hexadecimal 99 Bottles of Beer. Your task is to create a...

Huh, I wonder why people are downvoting this. I upvoted it actually; I thought it was at least mildly interesting.

It has no upvotes

I thought I upvoted it...
Oh right I still don't have my upvotes back yet
I used them all last night
@VTCAKAVSMoACE Looks good.

It looks really similar to the old 99 bottles challenge, just using hex instead of decimal. Very few differences between.

The old 99 bottles was a popcon though, right?

11:14 PM
Was it?

Idk

It was. Still - very similar challenge.

Yeah
Arguably not a dupe because of the difference in scoring criterion though
:/

@quartata 43 42 minutes!

GitHub gave me this image when it was taking too long to load a page.

11:23 PM
That was nice of it

I suppose.

@VTCAKAVSMoACE and I proudly present you ShadyAsFuck.

Well my productivity has gone down thanks to this site.

> abandon all work, ye who enter here —aditsu

@Status That is true of all of us.
@flawr Haha you linked VTCAKAVSMoACE on esolangs to Super User rather than PPCG XD

Oh.

on the other hand, I'm apparently top 11% this week
whatever that means

11:43 PM
@flawr I fixed it

so productivity traded for the first 11% of the week
or any 11% of the week

Lazy

that works out to some 18 and a half hours

Too lazy to even make the above a complete sentence

There is no word for 'sturmfrei' in english.

Goodnight!

Goodnight!

How the hell did you survive without this word????

I have no idea what it means so... I don't know how to answer that.

Storm free?

11:49 PM
translate: sturmfrei
(from English) sturmfrei

Frei means free, and sturm means storm...

It means that you are alone at home, and that you can do whatever the f*** you want.
So today I had sturmfrei, and I did whatever the f*** I wanted.

Which was sitting at the computer, wasting time on PPCG. What I do every evening anyway.

Why are there 4 *s?
XD

6 in total.
@VTCAKAVSMoACE You mean ,],. ?
Goodnight everyone
