5:00 PM
(doesn't make a bad code-golf question)

anyways, I don't know if anyone pointed it out, but removing all tips question is stupid for this SE
2

what does "all tips question" mean?

@Rainbolt @Optimizer fight!

rainbolt thinks its not stupid ?

It's got a bit of history...

5:02 PM
I thought he is just the messenger
I'll take anything that Geobits says as trolling from now on.

Probably a good idea in general, but I was being serious this time :D

such a troll

(not about graduation/meta posts/screenshots, serious about it having history)

"meat post" - trolling again

updated question per request

5:04 PM
Everyone likes meat. Except the ones who don't.

thanks @Geobits and others

Geobits needs lunch

any other comments?

That looks terrible.

5:05 PM
Meat post :)

you have no proof that's meat
it can be very well potato petties

It's actually a bunch of pixels. What's your point?
2

The cheese:meat ratio is waaaaay off, either way.

@Rainbolt its definitely not (0,0)

is there some way to give awards to the fastest solution in each language?

5:06 PM
@Lembik bounty

it would be fun to encourage answers to my question in high level languages
O

but keep in mind that you will have to increase your bounty each time

@Lembik What kind of rewards are you looking for?

Nothing tangible(ish) unless you want to lose all your rep (and then some) to bounties.

Tangile meat post!

5:07 PM
@Rainbolt I said the wrong thing.. I just meant I have read answers with answers in lots of languages

he read answers with answers
such meta

I could make a table with a winner per language for example

@Rainbolt Ceci n'est pas une burger.

This is not a burger.

I would love to see lua, haskell, numba etc.
and not just C/C++/Java

5:08 PM
What exactly is preventing you from creating a table?

maybe I should post the question :)
@Rainbolt nothing but there is normally one winning criterion

Oh I have an idea. Ask for a stack snippet that will collect the answers and create a table automatically with a winner per language.

@Rainbolt such novel

Even better, don't say "per language". Just make it "per category"

much history

5:09 PM
That burger makes a good test image

its a pile of poo now!
wrapped in two buns

Also, when did you evolve into Lembik?

That looks like something hanging on the wall in the worst McDonald's ever.

lol

@Rainbolt today!

5:11 PM
Congratulations. What was the fix?

@Rainbolt is category defined?

rm -rf /

@Rainbolt someone with very high rep did it :)

Category is like the "Java" in "Java - 8 Bytes"

:(){ :|:& };:

5:11 PM
You don't bite java, you drink it.

@Rainbolt right but have we defined what a categoryis somewhere?

i understand it now

@Lembik It's an English word.

@Rainbolt Uh you know martin and optimizer wrote this already, yes? :P

@Rainbolt Wow, nice idea, I should try that some time! ;)

5:12 PM
@Rainbolt I mean are python 3 and python 2 in the same category?
or python 2.7 and 2.6

Do you understand the concept of reusability?
You are trying too hard to narrow the usability down to your own definition of category.
Category is intentionally vague. You just need a snippet that collects them all.

wow, people are now just trying to get around the spec of the atomic question :D

no I am just trying to understand what people will understand if I say I will write a row per category!

Define it as "That thing before the dash ('-') in the header of an answer."
So in Java - 8 milliseconds, the category is "Java"
I think Martin was implying that this has been done before

@Rainbolt why didn't you like the word "language"?

5:15 PM
Let me put it this way. Why would you want to limit it to languages?

someone ping me

@Rainbolt I really have no idea what you are saying now :)
@Rainbolt are you just making fun of me?

I'm not

@Rainbolt ping

Can someone translate for me?

5:16 PM
did you get it TheDoctor ?

@me

@thedoctor

@Rainbolt then a programming language is something like Java or C and a category also seems to be something like Java or C. What is the difference?

What if I made a KotH with Lions, Tigers, and Bears and I wanted to make a table with a winner in each category.

@TheDogetor

5:17 PM
Lions, Tigers, and Bears are not languages

@Rainbolt but that's not relevant to my question!

But the exact same stack snippet should be able to accomplish this task, right?

people aren't going to submit code written in Lions :)
at least I assume not :)

@Lembik his point is that the snippet can be general enough to sort by anything that's written at the start of the headline, whether it's a language or not
and yes, my snippet would work in either case, whatever the actual "categories" are
feel free to copy it from one of my questions

I wonder at what point he went from actually not understanding to trolling me. It was a smooth transition anyway.

5:18 PM
@MartinBüttner ok thanks.I didn't even know he was referring to a code snippet

I'm pretty sure you two are talking about different things. Rainbolt is talking about the snippet in general, while Lembik seems to be asking how to define categories for his challenge.
Damn. Ninja'd hard.

everyone's just trolling - the ultimate truth

@Rainbolt I stayed at having no idea what you were talking about :)
but it is clear now, thanks

@Optimizer do you IRC?

a lot-ed

5:19 PM
@Geobits exactly!

@Geobits you made Optimizer become really jaded now...

I see that.

no u just troll

Out of all the times I've gotten a fake graduation date starred, this was the one that crossed the line :)

We need a place to vent all of this troll. Shall we reintroduce everyone's favorite tag?

5:21 PM
Only if we can create [trolling-tips] along with it.

Trolling

Proposed Q&A site for this site is for any part of Trolling. For those who want to prevent trolling, design systems that discourage trolling, or for people who want to successfully troll others.

Closed before being launched.

lol

wow

code-trolling = death
we not bring it back

code - trolling = death ?

@MartinBüttner thank you

I'll definitely not die if my code does not troll at me

I'm going to Cancun in three weeks. I've been running for like 6 months now. Definitely not in the shape I wanted to be :(

/mode +q @Optimizer
what's a running?

+q ?
I was never a mod on IRC so no idea

5:24 PM
quiet

heh two more upvotes for this guy and he's in for a Populist with his first answer on the site

How can he get a populist if there's no currently accepted answer?

well, I could accept the currently leading answer ;)
hm, someone didn't like that idea :D

who ?
he has no downvote

I think they upvoted the leader

5:27 PM
no, but the leading answer got an upvote, which means he needs two more ^^

oh

You guys have a funny definition of "leading".

A: Sandbox for Proposed Challenges

Nathan MerrillClimbing the Scoreboard In this challenge, you will be placed against another player, your goal is to hold the top 4 spots in the scoreboard. its code-golf troller!

Created the spec for the spots game I described yesterday

5:29 PM
@Geobits the shortest submission?

@MartinBüttner Yea I feel dumb now. For some reason I thought this wasn't a golf. I don't know what I thought it was...
Brain no work write.

it happens when you troll a lot.
stops stretching the topic now

Don't stop stretching! Go until it snaps :P

5:49 PM
By the way, now that we can talk about it, what did you guys think of my PPCG icon? Pretty good for something that took 10 seconds to make?

no

@Rainbolt I think they'll use it.

Here it is again:

Somehow, I'm pretty sure the icon is just gonna be a little flag on grassy ground.
2

5:51 PM
looks like a spoon more than a golf club

It's a bit... busy. It took me a couple seconds to look past the binary the first time to see the club.
But for 10 seconds? Not bad.

what does the binary say?

011010100....

yeah, my first impression was that it was a pen, circling a few digits in the lower left corner.
@Sp3000 Conquest.SE

5:53 PM
The zeroes/ones are oddly scaled, too. The ones in the center are squished compared to those on the edges.

:P well I actually stole that from CheckIO

Meh... still looks like a spoon. And a terrible one at that:

now it's a brush

Try a putter. Less round

And less foreground

5:58 PM

shouldn't the matrix of bits be a puzzle?

who says it isn't?

Lazy proposal: given x,y generate that bit?

@FryAmTheEggman if it was our actual logo, that would be good ^^

Very crude:
I think it would be best to generate a hundred crude ideas and then make ten of them look nice and then pick one.
= 3 meta posts
Err 2 meta posts
The "pick one" happens in the votes I guess.
I'm sure Stack Exchange has a formal process for this already.
I just hope it isn't like "First half decent one wins because it was posted first"

6:07 PM
IIRC, the formal process is "our designer does it" :/

Ah, I see.

Oh, well that seems mostly the case: meta.stackexchange.com/a/239756/212780
It does seem that they sometimes take feedback/ideas from the community, though, so a "post some ideas" meta thread still might be worth it, assuming we ever graduate. meta.stackexchange.com/a/87222/212780

6:32 PM
for once I am happy that we are actually not
is saved

6:54 PM
Some of the answers and general commentary on this question seem pretty strange to me.
Are arrays bad now or something?

They're inflexible - Telastyn's answer is quite good

Telastyn's answer would be better IMO if he didn't assume it's rare to not need that kind of flexibility.

that's not rare at all to have a fixed length...stupid answer
i like that one answer says arrays are shorter because they are less characters though
arrays are better*

woof

I want to post my question :) How long should one wait in the sandbox?

7:09 PM
I've crunched the numbers on this, and it seems the optimal wait time (in terms of votes + answers*5) is 3.1 days.

@Geobits :)
with or without code snippets?
I'll give it another 12 hours :)

trolling alert

Snippets were ignored. The actual time is 75.2 hours, but rounding.

but actually.. if anyone understands these code snippets and can make a table of languages that answers are posted in
I would be very grateful
@Optimizer I got it, thanks :)

I wonder if someone actually understands them
I mean its in JS, who understands JS ?

7:11 PM
or at least knows what to copy and paste to get it to work :)

javascript makes me nauseous

@feersum why is that?

The President understands one line of JS as of a couple days ago. It was widely reported as "First President to learn to program!" :(

president of the US I assume
you know there is more than one country? ;)

He understood this line:

// I have no idea why I wrote this function

@Lembik Yes. I just assumed most people would guess such an inane headline like that to emanate from the US. From what I've seen, foreign news is much better.

:)

The grass is always greener on the other side.
Why do you think people still live here?

The grass is never greener on the other side

7:16 PM
Unless you go to greenland. The grass there sucks.

@Optimizer Are you implying that all grass is equally green?

or less green
Its Schrödinger's Grass , we are never sure

@Rainbolt Meh. I can say first-hand that the reporting in the US vs Japan was night and day concerning the earthquake/Fukushima incident (I was living about 100 miles away at the time).

By observing the grass, its greenness changes

goes and recones a speaker

7:20 PM
i have to say, this is the craziest I have ever seen this chat room!
what happened?

#dogecoin

is it upcoming ?mas?

more question marks?

12:20 <DogetorHue> work it harder bake it better, do it faster makes us stronger
das me

@Geobits I assume Jesus knew regex

7:21 PM
lol

@FryAmTheEggman I wonder why people make the observer effect so complicated. Wikipedia uses "If you measure temperature with a thermometer, the thermometer will disturb the temperature." All this cat nonsense needs to be replaced with simple stuff.

I assume mas=more.

@Geobits more X all the time?

If you measure it without a thermometer, you should write a patent.

@Rainbolt I actually really dislike the cat analogy, too. It seems to imply that there are no photons in the box. Or air. Or anything else. >_>

7:24 PM
@FryAmTheEggman Well if there are photons in the box, then you can't know their state either. So the photons in the box may as well be an extension of the cat.

The cat analogy works better for zombies anyway. Not alive or dead, but both.

12:24 <DogetorHue> pentatonix needs to do dubstep

I love their Daft Punk video

yeah
i was listening to that when i though of that

He said, in speaking of the word "that," that that "that" that that
student had referred to was not that "that" that that other student
referred to.

Isn't it 13 buffalo?
nope its 8

That's the best I can do with just doctor variants

@Sp3000 do you get a solution once you fix that bug? I'm curious how you search that large a solution space.
