@Barmar interesting. So the UB which works on one machine is generally OK in your opinions and programmers should not bother. It works on my machine is OK! — gulpr 53 secs ago

You're making a common mistake among new programmers. Printing something to the screen and 'making a new string' are not the same thing. A string is a sequence of characters assigned to a variable. Text printed to the screen is no longer in your program, it's just text on the screen. print() takes a string and turns it into text on the screen, by default followed by a newline. If you tell it not to print a newline, it will just print the text and the next call to print() will continue where it ended, but it's still not creating a new string. — Grismar 5 secs ago

It is absolutely disappointing how visual marketers prevail over real programmers — Val Martinez 10 secs ago

Why make them global when it's usually better to avoid global state? And why would you need to overwrite the values in a loop? Personally, I don't think the question makes enough sense to be able to answer it very well. — wjandrea 24 secs ago

Replace "clever" with "hacker" and you will see that guarding against clever programmers does have value in a security context. Sometimes, all they want to do is make your code crash because that crash gives them access to things they wouldn't normally have. — HackSlash 48 secs ago
