A little love for this answer...?

A: How to program a status icon that will display in Ubuntu 11.04 as well as in other distributions?

George EdisonI have an excellent solution that has worked well in StackApplet - I created a functionally-equivalent version of the appindicator module that uses gtk.StatusIcon internally to provide identical functionality when the real module does not exist. Using it is as simple as: Downloading the follow...

@Takkat: It's your question :)
See if my answer helps you out.
"We’re not playing a game for developers hearts and minds – we’re playing a game for the worlds hearts and minds. and to achieve that we’re going to have to play by a new set of rules." - Mark Shuttleworth
I can't find the post with instructions on getting gtk.StatusIcons to show up in the Unity panel.
@JamesGifford Thank you!
@GeorgeEdison Welcome!
There a lot of posts about that. That's the shutter one, but the basic idea is the same for all of them
Nice answer there @Cas. :)
00:19
@JamesGifford Do you have to restart Unity for this change?
@GeorgeEdison As far as I know, yes.

00:55
@GeorgeEdison I did forgot to add 'Unity restart' to that question, cheers for nudge :)
Hi folks, does anyone know if i can reenable the firefox global menu button in 11.04 or was it stripped from the version for ubuntu?
:3 I'm so proud of her!
@KHendrik you can re-enable it.
You need to disable the global menu addon and restart, 1 sec while I mock up a screenshot guide.
@RolandTaylor thx very much
@RolandTaylor found it in addons
brb firefox restart
working great
01:11
cool
I was just about to post an image XD
thx again

2 hours later…
03:26
Any Python people around?
@GeorgeEdison i'm surprised that anybody but me is around. the room is fairly quiet after 10pm EST
@lazyPower How did the update work, by the way?
Did you get any different results?
i havent had a chance to test it brother. I fell out around 4pm, just woke up and i'm back on the grind prepping for phase 2 of a launch
after its done tho i'll give it a look
@lazyPower No problem.
Take your time. I'm fixing some other Windows nuisances too.
righ ton
i'm finishing up debugging this flash applet for the record it now feature, its spent too long in my dev queue
i have a presentation to make tomorrow on what i've done over the last 2 weeks, i think i'm going to steal the show
03:40
@lazyPower Does Red5 work well?
I switched to Wowza Media Server
Red5 wasn't functioning properly for me, so i gave up on it. I'm sure it works just great but I didnt have the time to invest in working with it.
$65/month for wowza license though. Not the best solution
@lazyPower I gave it a try as well... I couldn't get it running either.

Q: How to get Red5 working?

George EdisonI installed Red5 from the Ubuntu universe repository. After installation, I visited http://localhost:5080. The page looked like this: As you can see, there's a broken image on the page. As well, none of the internal links on the page work (they give 404 errors). What am I missing?

well I got the demo apps working
but the external applications were not funcitoning at all, its like the TCP host gave up, it accepted the incoming connection but then sent an immediate SIGHUP to the thread
so shrug i probably configured it wrong
Personally, my head is about to explode from mucking around in the internals of PyGTK to get a menu to disappear when the mouse leaves it.
03:44
I finally got a very inelegant (but effective!) solution working.
I know the feeling brother. I'm getting odd behavior out of my admin panel
The convert option is giving me issues, so i made it a static option, and now it causes a full page postback instead of doing the ajax Shrug
i gave up on it and i'm finalizing this applet for now, going to write the documentation for it then back ot hacking at the panel and making a PPT
sigh, tired enough to be trying to use unity keyboard shortcuts on my lucid desktop at work
Lucid != Unity
no kidding
that didn't stop me from trying to bring up the terminal with the same keybinding I use at home
haha
@ajmitch cant you bind those key-combos to the same function?
I'd do that, slap it in a dotfiles repository somewhere and have it follow me.
03:49
I don't know if I could bind super-4 to bring existing terminal windows to the front as happens in unity
since its just a compiz function, should work.
unless i'm being daft
maybe, I don't know if compiz has bindings for raising windows of a particular app, or if that's something unity has added in
or I could just upgrade my work desktop at some point
I think it does... but I have no clue how to do it.
Do you have CCSM installed?
nope
but that's only a sudo apt-get install away
ugh
need coffee
03:58
If there is something in ccsm in lucid, I can't see it
hey dudes, any of you have experience configuring ATI cards?
nope, I just use mine & it works
bah
i have 2, i'd like to switch to the 2nd so I can plug in my monitor to my laptop
but the ATI drivers don't seem to want to recognize that one, they do want to recognize the internal one
2 video cards in the same laptop?
yea
2 ati cards, a low power and a high power
4600 + 5600
04:04
I know that some people have had that working with nvidia, but I suspect it'd depend on the drivers
**4200
fark!
gawd nvidia at least makes half-decent drivers :P

Q: How to manage two video cards on a laptop (ATI and Intel)?

Marc-François Cochaux-LabergeI have a laptop with two video cards. One ATI and on integrated Intel. On Windows, I can choose which video card I want to use. For example, I use the Intel card for normal use and for gaming, I switch to my ATI card for better performance, but a shorter battery life. In Ubuntu 10.10, only the...

is the closest I can find for ati
sounds like switching between two ati chipsets is a bit more complicated though
*sigh
is this because its ATI not NVIDIA?
you may find better info, I don't have a laptop with that so I haven't needed to look for it
I don't know if nvidia is much better :)
it really is dependent on the card itself
a few nvidia cards are still problematic, a few ati cards are still problematic
04:13
i just want to 5600 running and the 4200 dead
and off
but as a whole, the core functionality of the video chipsets in the kernel-sphere have normalized over the last three years.
can't disable in bios (thanks hp)
ouch
and you cant do something similar to twinview on the card-configs?
the reason is that the 5600 is wher ei can plug a monitor into
ati config can't freaken detect the other video card
i realize its overkill but its a hackish workaround until you can get some better info.
ouch again
04:14
its like "what? other card? its unknown piss off"
I'm almost glad I've got an antique (18 months old) laptop :P
maybe i can just blacklist it?
nice bro!
04:16
uninstalling and re-frshing with your latest iteration @GeorgeEdison
ok so how do i blacklist this other card
as far as i know you can only blacklist modules
crap!
ok well
looks like there are other issues with the 5600 card
maybe not
@GeorgeEdison well minor success
@lazyPower Really?
04:20
yeah its stuck on the prefs page with a Loading... message
But the icon appears?
let me fire up my http-sniffer and see what kind of activity its got
yeah
That's an improvement.
icons up, prefs page is running, its trying to do stuff
Perhaps your config file is messed up.
04:21
I also wiped out the old install and instaled it in Program Files instead of Program Files (x86)
Could you close all running instances and delete ~.stackapplet/config ?
yep, sec
(I know Windows doesn't have a concept of ~, but I mean your home folder.)
i knew what you meant ;)
i rm -rf'd ~/.stackapplet and its still hanging on the prefs page
let me screencast this, hang on
Hmmm.... I have another build that outputs debug info to a console. It's uploading now...
@lazyPower Thanks.
np :)
Here's the link to the debug version: files.quickmediasolutions.com/temp/…
That one will pop up a console when run and hopefully give us some information.
gahhhhhhhhh
be right back, i ddint close it out before i unisntalled it now the files are locked in memory
brb, gotta reboot to ditch th file locks
reboot?
what madness is this?
04:32
@ajmitch It's a Windows thing.
how evil
Linux happily lets us delete files that are in use.
...but Windows - nope.
that's because windows is a single-user system at heart
Well... I don't know about that - but its filesystem structure and implementation is antiquated.
so is ext*
04:33
@ajmitch It is? I thought Ext4 just came out in 2006?
yeah, i make no comment as to why my work lappy sucks :P
the only perk to it, is i can run SC2 in ultra settings with no hiccups because it has a fiznilthy nvidia Cuda card that screams
Hey, I found an easter egg on Google!
Search for 'ascii art' and look at the Google logo.
thats so old :P
@GeorgeEdison ext4 is fairly recent, but it's just another step on the same path
it's not like there's a single version of the NTFS format
@GeorgeEdison the console is printing no output.
@ajmitch true, ntfs has been a evolution of #fail
however its still better than the FAT systems and EXT2
04:43
@lazyPower hey!
@lazyPower Okay, so likely a JavaScript error then.
o/ @KaustubhP
@ajmitch @GeorgeEdison \o
Does Firefox report anything in the console?
hello
04:44
@KaustubhP \o
according to firebug: Translator.translation_table is null
[Break On This Error] return (typeof Translator.tran...ey:Translator.translation_table[key];
translations.js : line 56
its working in chrome tho
chrome reports no error, it gracefully failed :)
@lazyPower So it displays the accounts in Chrome?
oh yeah
its up and running if i use chrome
Hang on... maybe I can repro. the FF issue.
04:51
In your screenshot, on the left screen, at the bottom, there's a '+' next to the 'get_translations' request.
Can you please expand that?
Then I can see the HTTP output from it.
just a sec, reinstalling stackapplet without the debug console
@lazyPower Oh, and if not too much trouble, maybe the next one too?
(The 'get_settings' one.)
this is atool i would like ot have on my nix box, jing makes screen-sharing simple.
@lazyPower So it looks like there are no accounts set up?
i make excessive use of it at work
04:56
@lazyPower I like that tool.
i have them setup through chrome.
They should show up in Firefox though.
Are they showing up in Chrome right now?
this particular instance of FF was prior to the account setup
if i refresh i'm sure it would be all hunkey dorey, however, this was first run, in FF
04:57
Okay. I have a patch for the JS problem.
Does it work if you refresh now?
nice, want me to uninstall/reinstall again?
Well... it's not necessary...
negatory
i have accounts setup in chrome
and its still throwing an error of the translationtable being null
Okay, can you stick this line right before line 56 in <stackapplet install path>/html/translations.js:
04:58
> if(Translator.translation_table == null) return key;
That should fix it.
return (typeof Translator.translation_table[key] == 'undefined')?key:Translator.translation_table[key]; => if(Translator.translation_table == null) return key; ?
works
verified fix
So everything runs fine?
Yeeees!
Thanks so much for your time.
Glad I could help :)
Hopefully the tool proves useful to you and I plan to continue to improve it.
theres your windows screenshot :)
The rep should be altered to protect the integrity of the aforementioned innocent, otherwise people will snicker and make snarky comments. so multiply by a million and i'm golden :P
05:06
@lazyPower Your rep. on Ask Ubuntu is good.
@GeorgeEdison i really like the web-interface for configuration. this has made it feel quite a bit more streamlined. and the fact that it instant updates is nice too. Hefty improvement over the initial product sir. hats off.
i need to get un-busy at some point and troll the sites instead of being a chat-lurker. that would fix the rep issue :P
@lazyPower Thanks. Don't forget you can reorder accounts by dragging them around too!
You could probably trim down the filesize by changing the StackApplet logo to being type-faced using google web fonts and some CSS styling.
that just my 2 cents tho
@lazyPower That's a great idea.
05:08
I also need to have StackApplet provide jQuery and jQuery UI so that offline users can configure it.
Right now it's just hotlinked to the Google CDN versions.
thats as easy as a javascript to check for file presence or use your own static set every time.
you know, that could be an option...
however
why would you want to use stackapplet offline since it just provides rep count?
@lazyPower In case you want to prevent it from loading at startup and you don't have a net connection.
That's just a possibility...
ah, ok.
What would be kind of nice is if you could pull in my network profile info as a config panel option
Also, a benefit for using offline versions is a slight performance boost from trimming down jQuery UI.
so i can see the breakdown in a pretty format from the applet.
but that may be moot since yo ucould just provide a link
and say "click here to see your network profile"
05:11
@lazyPower That's a thought.
Some extra links never hurt.
i dunno i really should be working though :P i gotta get back to what i was doing
bang up job tho, i'm impressed
Something I had planned for down the road is a 'dashboard' page that StackApplet displays with all of the data it's fetched.
@lazyPower Thanks again. ttyl.
05:27
@GeorgeEdison i missed the next page link ! thanks for that
@Alaukik No problem.

Q: Cannot make Google Chrome Default browser

ShashankI installed Chromium. It worked well. But I could not set it as default. It was there in my Dash, but every time I opened it, it asked me whether I want to set it as default. I even tried changing it in the Preferences. I could click on Make it my default browser but it didn't make a change. So...

no offense, but since when is asking your browser not to nag you a workaround?
06:07
@JorgeCastro Check out the numbers :)
Good morning everybody :)
@GeorgeEdison Thank you posting this! Too bad I'll have to wait until later to try out. I'm so excited :)
06:23
how to run a function as root in shell script.. http://bit.ly/m8aXwF #shellscripting
@Takkat You mean the AppIndicator question?
Yup. I made a workaround for my app but I bet your's is better :)
Morning!
Morning @Rinzwind
so much to read since yesterday :)
@MarcoCeppi those numbers deserve a :-) 2 answer per question in average isn't bad either:)
y-day was a bad day. ended on 180 rep :( 20 short
Banshee crashed... again?
that's you that calls it bad :P
Man I hate that program.
06:40
@GeorgeEdison skype? or is it something else today? _O-
I always wanted to try out Banshee but never found the time.
oh wait Banshee _O-
@Takkat Stay away from it!
lol
I was a huge fan of banshee until all of the steam got pumped into it by canonical picking it up as default. it seems to have overgrown its purpose (my 2 cents)
06:42
It crashes all the time and does weird things like playing the first song in an album twice.
... and I can consistently reproduce that last one.
@GeorgeEdison you can not blame Banshee living up to it's name. Bashees are famous for it :-D
indeed, and the last.fm radio support leaves something to be desired, as it has conflicts with itself on a regular basis.
man i'm in a gripey mode today... time to change that.
@lazyPower I think I'm going to ask a question about how to help with crash reports and stuff.
Oh I love banshee, its awesome.
Looking at @lazyPower 's post me wonders... does @GeorgeEdison have banpowers?
06:44
@Rinzwind Banpowers...? What's that?
@Rinzwind nah, i just looked over my chat history and i've been griping more than anything else lately. Time to be less "gripey" and be more constructive with my time.
<< is afraid of becoming poisonous.
if you have to start wearing hazmat suits to be around me i'll leap off a building
06:48
I thought you are the one in white
that's not nice for the people standing at the bottom of the building not wearing hazmat suits
lol
>.>
@Rinzwind you could have just let me have it... but noooooooooooo :P
sweet regged media server, recording applet is functioning, the web service is go, I have about 36 lines of jquery to audit and fix, and I'm ready for a deploy
so excited
@GeorgeEdison when i finish this, where are we going for beers? we have to celebrate
06:52
I'm so relieved to have the 1.5 beta out.
can someone confirm is this is the correct syntax: gconftool-2 --type boolean --set /apps/gnome-session/options/auto_save_session false
why is this unacceptable?
too short? >:)
They have quality filters now, it may not meet the minimum character limit or something
i just saw jeffs post on twitter about 20 minutes ago about them posting new quality guidelines.
let me see if i cant fish up the url
but that describes the question perfectly
07:04
@Alaukik to you, to me but not according to AU :X
well, give it some background detail, and move forward
add in a pix of skype logo >:))
I wonder if Ekiga will be the most prominantly replied with app, it was on the Ubuntu forums about a year ago when i asked that very question because I was annoyed with the crash-happy instance of skype.
@lazyPower probably.
@lazyPower i have already created a list
07:05
Ekiga isnt much of a replacement.
@lazyPower tried sflphone
I personally, would like to engineer something of similar design and form, only cross platform and on a rolling release cycle. However I dont think i have the power or time to undertake such an endeavour.
@Alaukik negative
and i'm sure this merger will spawn about a million projects that die off rapidly due to other people starting with the same motivation.
@Alaukik you are bias towards Ekiga! That pic will have all the nerds flock to Ekiga!
@Rinzwind why ?
07:21
cuz of the girl in the pix :D
lol
this one
@Rinzwind no one judges software by that
and that is the screenshot found on the homepage
.... i do ....
@Alaukik me points at @lazyPower. See :-D
@lazyPower i don't think you SERIOUSLY do it .
nah, not really.
07:24
tsk :(
07:34
@Rinzwind i have removed it anyways and added yate in the post
07:46
lol
I like that girl :*
I am on a roll today O+
08:55
@lazyPower why do you think ekiga is not a replacement ?
09:11
@MarcoCeppi Cheaters!
Just wait til we get a link on the Steam Overlay :P
Maybe in 2040.
What FLOSS skype alternatives are available ? http://bit.ly/lhmXQZ #softwarerecommendation
@Alaukik just informing: are my options wrong >:D and is yours the only way?
guess so :(
09:33
@Rinzwind what?
09:45
@all Morning
Hi @Achu
@Alaukik don't bother anymore :D I deleted my answer :-X

Q: Do we have switching and routing simulation software?

AchuIs there switching and routing simulation application?

@Rinzwind this one urgently needs localization
@Takkat your mean for the non-french talking people? :D
Indeed it does :D
09:56
@Rinzwind it's got more than 2 languages :D
@Achu do you mean a packet tracer?
@Takkat are you sure? I think it is french only at the moment :X
@Rinzwind don't forget about the programming language
@Rinzwind I know packet tracer under windows. and i don't want to run using wine
I just looking alternative
can't type on this cheap office keyboard
10:14
packet tracer has a ubuntu version
I had a look at cisco but couldn't find any further info on that :/
Foung it @Achu @Alaukik:
They say it supports Ubuntu 8.04 LTS
10:39
stupid windows machine decided to reboot again :*(
@Alvar gratz!!!
+1 on the views >:D
@Takkat good find :) are you going to answer the q with it?
@Rinzwind not really - go ahead. Packet tracer was your idea anyway. It's close to cisco academy members.
wtf click the 'Find alternate download links` It opens a google search. All you need to do is insert some malware and cisco will advice it :X
They don't want non-academy people to download :P
@Achu found a tutorial on it for Ubuntu: ubuntuka.com/run-cisco-packet-tracer-in-ubuntu
10:59
@Achu added packer tracer to your q :)
so time to think up a quote worthy of starring :-)
@Rinzwind i was login and in thank you for your answer i will try to install packet tracer
11:15
this question makes me think "fishy". Sounds more like correctly setting your router... askubuntu.com/questions/41995/…

djeikybProblem: Normal users aren't using the best graphics driver. I first noticed this playing Osmos from the HumbleBundle2, but I can observe it while running glxgears too.
