I have an excellent solution that has worked well in StackApplet - I created a functionally-equivalent version of the appindicator module that uses gtk.StatusIcon internally to provide identical functionality when the real module does not exist.
Using it is as simple as:

I installed Red5 from the Ubuntu universe repository. After installation, I visited http://localhost:5080. The page looked like this:
As you can see, there's a broken image on the page. As well, none of the internal links on the page work (they give 404 errors). What am I missing?
but the external applications were not funcitoning at all, its like the TCP host gave up, it accepted the incoming connection but then sent an immediate SIGHUP to the thread
I have a laptop with two video cards. One ATI and on integrated Intel.
On Windows, I can choose which video card I want to use.
For example, I use the Intel card for normal use and for gaming, I switch to my ATI card for better performance, but a shorter battery life.

The rep should be altered to protect the integrity of the aforementioned innocent, otherwise people will snicker and make snarky comments. so multiply by a million and i'm golden :P
@GeorgeEdison i really like the web-interface for configuration. this has made it feel quite a bit more streamlined. and the fact that it instant updates is nice too. Hefty improvement over the initial product sir. hats off.
i need to get un-busy at some point and troll the sites instead of being a chat-lurker. that would fix the rep issue :P

So...
I was a huge fan of banshee until all of the steam got pumped into it by canonical picking it up as default. it seems to have overgrown its purpose (my 2 cents)
@Rinzwind nah, i just looked over my chat history and i've been griping more than anything else lately. Time to be less "gripey" and be more constructive with my time.

I wonder if Ekiga will be the most prominantly replied with app, it was on the Ubuntu forums about a year ago when i asked that very question because I was annoyed with the crash-happy instance of skype.
I personally, would like to engineer something of similar design and form, only cross platform and on a rolling release cycle. However I dont think i have the power or time to undertake such an endeavour.
@Alaukik negative
and i'm sure this merger will spawn about a million projects that die off rapidly due to other people starting with the same motivation.
Problem:
Normal users aren't using the best graphics driver. I first noticed this playing Osmos from the HumbleBundle2, but I can observe it while running glxgears too. Maximised on a 1280x1024, glxgears averages a choppy 60 frames in 5 seconds, vs a smooth 300 frames every 5 seconds for root.
