@Alaukik yes if it will exists Earth on 2013 LOL
I think we will colonize the moon before then...
@Alaukik a Linux user wouldn't be caught in Best Buy in the first place...
@Alaukik Is it an antivirus developer the biker? LOL
@TheX the user is not inside best buy the user is outside ;)
15:09
@TheX Yes they would be. They'd be caught there trying to help the best buy geeksquad fix their computers which are infected. ;)
@JamesGifford good point...
I go to best buy once a year...
and that is because my in-laws buy me a 50$ gift card for Christmas every year...
:)
That's a very good reason
other then that I avoid it
bye everybody!
Bye
15:13
Cya @haltman!
Will Skype be removed from the Canonical Partner repository? http://bit.ly/lFsZ6i #skype
I want GNU Flash :P
but GNU Free Call is great, I'll use it. I don't use skype, because it's not free, as in freedom :/
@Daniel0108 its not fully developed yet
there is already gnash
15:26
@Alaukik Oh okay
@Daniel0108 i really like sflphone
it is really user - freindly but it is GNU/Linux only
ekgia is the best cross platform VOIP
@Alaukik, that doesn't matter, I only use Linux :P Is it in the repos?
yes !
@Alaukik Great :D
15:31
@OctavianDamiean hi :)
@Daniel0108 o/
anyone here watches community ?
@Alaukik Are you at the UDS?
@Alaukik remotely?
15:35
@Daniel0108 no
i am not a developer
@Alaukik what d you mean by watches community then?
@Alaukik Oh yes, I thought you mean the UDS when you said: "Who watches community?"
@OctavianDamiean @Daniel0108 It is best explained through this link lmddgtfy.com/?q=Community+%28TV+series%29 ;)
@Alaukik NoScript blocks it, lol :P
15:38
@Daniel0108 disable it for a moment
@Alaukik that one would've wasted less of my time
@Alaukik oh lol :P
@Alaukik It's like lmgtfy :P
@OctavianDamiean you serously think you could have utilized that 5 seconds for something
@Daniel0108 it is more open!
@Alaukik Good :)
@Alaukik well yes, I could've jumped back to coding C
15:42
@OctavianDamiean well you could compensate on that by sleeping 5 less seconds :P
@Alaukik lol :P
is AskUbuntu okay with copying their how-to guides?

Q: Integrate Skype into Messaging Menu

user8951I know Skype is proprietary, but it would be awesome if it were to be integrated into messaging menu much like Pidgin, Empathy, etc. Is there a plug-in that does that?

@JeremyBicha I think there's a pidgin plugin but I'm not sure
AskUbuntu isn't CC
their Natty page is but everything else says "All rights reserved."
@JeremyBicha misunderstood your question
15:48
oh sorry, I mis-stated my question
is OmgUbuntu ok with copying their stuff?
@JeremyBicha oh sorry, I just read the question on the link, not your question :)
@JeremyBicha well i don't think they will sue you for this but they don't release the content under any open content because they don't want blogs republishing content and thus reducing advert income from their site .
well unless they say it's ok for AskUbuntu to copy their stuff, then it should be flagged for deletion, right?
@JeremyBicha i have added it under quotes
there should be no problem now
ok, yeah that's good, thanks!
@Alaukik was revision 3 better?
16:00
@JeremyBicha i have read comments that "while a link may theoretically answer the question summarizing the content here is preferable"
@OctavianDamiean around?
@JeremyBicha send me a mail, [email protected] and I'll ask the OMG guys.
(sorry at UDS I am in and out)
@JorgeCastro yes here
I can ask Joey too if you want
he is even online right now
@JorgeCastro I'm going to get some sweets and then I'll be trying to find you in the motel
16:19
1
A: What new easter eggs are in 11.04?

Jorge CastroAlt+F2, about:robots is another one

really awesome
@TheX I got the news! Skype is dead meat!
To hell with Skype!
@RolandTaylor so which VOIP will you switch to ?
@Alaukik @RolandTaylor and I have tried all the FLOSS ones... they are horrid... lol
@RolandTaylor I'm serious you know, Skype may be paying Canonical for inclusion
there's a lot of that money deal stuff that's not public
@JeremyBicha they would be?
16:26
@JeremyBicha the problem with that theory is that neither are profitable...
So basically I'm right... Companies like Skype are paying to make Linux look stupid?
it's a guess, I may be totally wrong but that kind of deal is not unheard of
I didn't know which in particular you were laughing at
@JeremyBicha The whole thing! XD
Canonical pays money to other projects that aren't profitable
@RolandTaylor ok, lol :-)
@Alaukik I want something with the looks of Qutecom, but the quality of Skype (and the visual ease of Ekiga)...
16:28
if I were a company short on cash & had "partners", I'd sure want those partners to be paying up
@JeremyBicha yeah but how do you get a company that has no money to pay up?
well, Skype'll be rolling in money soon
Microsoft obviously paid too much for it
@JeremyBicha I doubt it... it will be rolled into some other MS project, probably MSN and never heard of again
2
My theory is they bought it more for the backbone, then the name/software
I don't see any way of them getting their money's worth from it
they already have... they are going to kill a competitor
16:32
exactly!
in any case, I'm happy...
Skype is dead
got shafted for shafting us
I don't think Messenger really competes with Skype
but that's probably because I don't use either any more
Skype was useful when I lived overseas
@JeremyBicha my theory is, they are getting to release something... that would have been a direct competitor...
caught wind that skype was talking to facebook
brb - busy chatting and such XD
and doubled the pot to kill Skype
(btw - I predict google buying microcrap and google buying facebook, then me buying google)
16:35
@RolandTaylor can i be the CCO of microcrap???
@TheX ofc XD
You can call your Super Company "Roland-Ware"
@RolandTaylor btw changing the channels on my WAP is not helping
Hi guys, I have some problems with ubuntu, can I post question here?
@umpirsky sure but that doesn't mean we can answer them
but we are always willing to listen :D
Oli
Oli
@umpirsky You'd probably do better to post them on the main site. That's what it's for, after all - and there are a lot more users there than here... But if people here can help, it might be faster.
16:42
Great, it's this [kernel module] hrtimer_start (cx88_ir_work) causes wakeups

@Alaukik gratz for making it possible to gain the "nice answer" badge :=)
@RolandTaylor have you tried sflphone ?
@Alaukik no, and I won't
@RolandTaylor why?
I'm not going to waste the time using our (F/OSS) half-baked stuff any more :)
jk
16:47
I wonder if I can kill this [kernel module] hrtimer_start (cx88_ir_work), but I don't know how, because I don't see it in top, just in powertop
but I haven't tried it yet simply cause I've had no reason to
@RolandTaylor "our (F/OSS) half-baked stuff any more :)" i mean without even trying you have declared it half-baked how rational of you
@Alaukik how rational of you to ignore "jk" == "joking"
@RolandTaylor oops i didn't know that
I thought jk was just kidding :-P
16:52
@RolandTaylor when I get back to my desk we can try sflphone
if you want
askubuntu.com/questions/41828/… this might be better of on another forum :P It's not really ubuntu related.
@TheX I guess :D
I suspect it will work about as well as the others though
@TheX about as poorly?
@RolandTaylor yes as poorly
16:56
@TheX at least we still have Skype XD
@Rinzwind yeah that question should to go superuser or something
Microsoft Lindows
@RolandTaylor for now
@RolandTaylor are we allowed to swear in this chatbox? :D
17:01
We need this guy to become a preacher...
for Atheism...
(everyone would become a Christian)
sorry Marco - but I couldn't resist the tongue_in_cheek joke)
@Rinzwind it's not advised :)
@RolandTaylor what about homosexual people ?
@Rinzwind yeah I got banned once for far less then mentioning a certain product made by a certain company...
@Alaukik I know where you're going with that...
But... I'd rather go with him ^
@TheX oh? :D so I should say "bye" @RolandTaylor just in case? :-D
@Rinzwind :)
17:04
@Rinzwind it was only a 30 mins ban, so I came back
ahhhh
Kids, please do drugs...
Don't study hard and become like this...
@RolandTaylor so anything against religion cannot be tolerated but anything against atheism should be accepted .
yeah okay... drugs will get you far... look at what happened to the Beatles...
@Alaukik If you want an argument, you're free to do it in another location...
17:05
its not like they got rich and famous
can't we opt for him to join scientology, then call an alien race to pick the whole lot up?
@Alaukik I think we Christians deserve at least ONE joke...
@Alaukik no need for an argument, we will all find out in the end one way or another
or would that damn the whole of humanity?
@Rinzwind shhhhhh
sheesh!
you let the cat out of the bag D:!
17:06
So does this mean we need to setup a new OpenVOIP community to fill the gap that skype left off?
@Rinzwind one time I fried my mothership on my PC...
now we'll have to buy Apple :(
@lazyPower yes!
@lazyPower skype never filled the gap...
someone should copy the code for skype :D
Sounds like an interesting plan. @TheX actually it put a cork in a canyon, so it filled something.
17:07
Skype has code?
O.o
@Rinzwind that wouldn't get you sued by MS
boobs! again! great chatbox this _O-
@RolandTaylor No , it was programmed in ms paint ;)
I'm thinking I can setup a prototype of a voip application rather quickly using some C# libs and a openVOIP server... might be one of those weekend projects after i finish rolling my blog code up this weekend.
17:07
@Alaukik XD
and helping @GeorgeEdison with stackapplet, since I seem to have broken my install.
@RolandTaylor: How do you feel?
@lazyPower Oh right.
I talked to someone else running it on Win7 last night.
Its just my local install i'm rather sure.
I have an installer that (hopefully) fixes some of the problems.
damn, I knew I should have invested in MS last week
17:08
unless they had the sam eissues
@TheX Why...? Their stock fell :)
@GeorgeEdison why can't we browse all the questions using the stack exchange data dump viewer ?
@GeorgeEdison euphoria, ecstasy, cocaine, jumping off tall buildings, and a date with <insert actress here>, can't come close to how I feel right now :D!
@Alaukik What version of Ubuntu are you using?
11.04
17:09
wouldn't that be something... MS single handedly saves the US economy by buying skype...
..and how old is the data dump you're using?
@Alaukik that's old!
ninja edit:+
@TheX looooool..........
@TheX Don't you see what this means for the Linux version of Skype? :P
@GeorgeEdison it means we have a valid reason to kick them in the face :) (and tell em thanks for nothing).
17:11
@GeorgeEdison yeah... skype is going to get rolled up into another MS product and get killed off...
...or perhaps the opposite - Microsoft taking an interest in Linux and releasing Messenger for Linux 2.01 Beta. (...and then not releasing another one for two years.)
@GeorgeEdison effectively killing skype on linux...
Hey guys, how about we put together a new ad campaign for Ubuntu?
@TheX maybe or it will be all over all their products. MS having another monopoly
@GeorgeEdison i used the one that came with it and also tried the data dump of atheismSE but only 3 options were there and search didn't work
17:12
@RolandTaylor for MS?
@Alaukik Hmmm... I'll have to try it myself and get back to you.
@RolandTaylor you making me want to blog anything related to Balmer from my network :P
@GeorgeEdison typical story on this? uninstall / install
or is there an upgrade feature now?
@GeorgeEdison i installed it like this ( askubuntu.com/questions/40629/… ) also see the last screenshot
17:13
@TheX I'm going to make this into a real advertisment :)
@RolandTaylor good luck
@TheX Canonical could use it as a motivation to bring Developers to Ubuntu...
@RolandTaylor lol
Developers Developers Developers Developers... such musical talent!
I can just imagine what will happen to Skype with so many Developers working on it!
We might finally get a Linux version that supports group video (multiple people in a video chat, just one at a time!)
17:24
@lazyPower Sorry, just uninstall / install.
Its all good
thats why i ask
Just noticed the Skype question has a vote for "not a real question." I try not to ask those. Would someone mind explaining what I did wrong?
@Alaukik You are using the convertor, right?
(There's another tool you need to build in the convert folder.)
17:26
what?
Yup, that tool generates a high-efficiency index.
how ?
back
@Alaukik How to build the tool?
@GeorgeEdison Yes
17:27
Just cd into the convert folder and run qmake/make/etc.
...or just use the compile_everything script.
@GeorgeEdison i used that
@Alaukik Actually, reading your post - I see you've done that :)
@GeorgeEdison ya
So what's not working?
17:33
Okay... what happens if you click on "Top 25 voted questions"?
i get the questions
@RolandTaylor Very nice.
but i want to read all questions
also the search doesn't work
What are you searching for?
@GeorgeEdison the 26th question :=D
17:36
@Rinzwind There's a "Next page" link at the bottom, though - right?
@GeorgeEdison one sec going to check :-D
@GeorgeEdison oh and 1 comment:should your readme on installation not contain a list of dependencies?
@GeorgeEdison confirmed! there is a 'next page' at the bottom
@Rinzwind Right. I'll have to add that.
@GeorgeEdison another small thingy: the arrows at the top if they do work only do 1 page back and 1 page forward.
and @Alaukik was the one telling me about the deps. So @all praise @Alaukik :-)
deps are: bzr qt4-qmake libqt4-dev
17:53
is back
is back too
@Rinzwind Right. The arrows only remember up to one page.
@GeorgeEdison ah so it's a feature and no bug? >:D
"Bleach" time brb :)
18:13
is back as well
During boot, I only see a dark aubergine screen - how can I make plymouth work? http://bit.ly/kr5gyV #1104
Hey guys, Ask Ubuntu won't accept my question with the only reason of "Sorry, we can't accept your question", even on Meta when I wanted to post about it.
@Oxwivi what was the question about?
Assigning run command to all video files, @Oct
@OctavianDamiean
Odd.
Never seen THAT error before.
18:20
me neither
And on Meta, it was about this error message, but I was met with that message on Meta as well!
Just tried taht
Well, can you guys answer my question?
that is really odd
doesn't work. Time to dial this into @Oli and @MarcoCeppi to make sure that it makes it to @JeffAttwood
:P
18:21
I'm not sure I understand what you mean @Oxwivi
It appears that no one can ask any questions. At. All.
@JamesGifford woot
@OctavianDamiean, can you help me with the question I was about t ask?
*to
@Oxwivi Sure. We can give it a go.
@OctavianDamiean SO seems frozen as well.
@Oxwivi well I got that but I don't know if I got the initial question ;)
18:23
omg that's bad news. Hope they get it fixed.
I want to assign a run command for everything recognized as video files.
@Oxwivi you mean a default player?
Indeed.
System Settings only has for music, but not for video.
I see
well hold on
Well System Settings has option for Multimidea Player to be accurate.
18:25
oh yea it still opens video files with another player you're right
you know about the right click →Properties →Open With tab
How do I quote a range of chat logs for peeps to see?
Room → Create new bookmark
@OctavianDamiean, that won't assing the command to all video files?
@Oxwivi well only to those file types
Yeah, that's why I wanted to ask the question if I can add all the file types in bulk.
18:30
@Oxwivi yea I got you, I'm still trying to figure out a way to do that
Anyway, for public knowledge, I have posted this thread in Community Cafe of Ubuntu Forums: ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=10797351#post10797351
@Oxwivi if you want to do that command line have a look at ~./local/share/applications/mimetypes.list
@OctavianDamiean Thanks!
@Rinzwind, you're pointing me to a file, what's it to do with a command line?
@Oxwivi
oops
@Oxwivi that is where those are stored and "mimetype" is the command to change that
I don't have the applications folder in the directory you mentioned, but looking at mimetype man page.
I see not anything to do with changing commands?
18:35
Looks like the entire SE network is still frozen. :L
Server update?
Might be.
@Oxwivi you want avi/mpg/mkv to be opened by 1 program by issueing a command in command line? Or did I assume it wrongly?
@Oxwivi found a flaw in my plan: it's mimeopen
mimeopen -d \[Chihiro\]_The_World_God_Only_Knows_II_-_05_\[1280x720_H.264_AAC\]\[89A7F6DD\].mkv
Please choose a default application for files of type video/x-matroska

1) Banshee (banshee)
2) SMPlayer (smplayer)
3) Enqueue in SMPlayer (smplayer_enqueue)
4) Movie Player (totem)
5) VLC media player (vlc)
6) Other...
@Oxwivi @Rinzwind is right, that is the right file to look at you might need the /usr/share/applications/mimeinfo.cache file to look up some of those mimetypes
oh that might work as well
@Rinzwind, anime FTW! But isn't that again individually assigning commands to certain file types?
*subbed anime
18:44
@Oxwivi yes you need to run this for all filetypes you want ;) But that is just a list you can save and cat into the mimeopen
Or just store a bunch of mimeopen commands in a text file and execute that (that is what I normally do postinstall ;) )
cat into mimeopen? A couple of examples please?
Ah.
Okay, and will this allow me to add flags as well? (MPlayer user.):D
this might be a good option too:
--database=mimedir:mimedir:...
Force the program to look in these directories for the shared mime-
info database. The directories specified by the basedir
specification are ignored.
"flags"?
-- new q's coming into AU again!
@Rinzwind, command flags: mplayer filename.mkv -ass
Well, posting the question anyway.
@Oxwivi unlikely that that'll work.
Huh? I'm still getting the same error message.
18:51
I am seeing new q's :)
tsk and now it stopped again :X
did anyone else get a flag review here in the chat?
