Q: Ubuntu Touch question

JohanWell I had a query about Ubuntu Touch. If I am planing to buy a new phone now, what phone models should I be searching for so that when Touch is released, I can make as smooth a transition from the old OS to touch as possible?

WHY WHY WHY are these on topic?????
WE DON'T KNOW THE ANSWER.

12:35 AM
@Seth: actually.... there's apparently a list on the ubuntu touch wiki

Is there?
whistles

don't we have a master question on that...

You know what... we did!

Posted an answer, though I referenced the wiki since the broader answer is subject to change

VTC as dupe'd.

12:40 AM
yea!

and I only know this cause I was at a local ubuntu loco meeting with a touch developer

Q: Why does Qt use d_func() for instantiating a pointer to private data?

Nathan OsmanConsider the following Qt class: #include <QScopedPointer> class MyClassPrivate; class MyClass { public: MyClass(); ~MyClass(); private: QScopedPointer<MyClassPrivate> d_ptr; Q_DECLARE_PRIVATE(MyClass) } This class resembles the structure of most Qt cla...

^--- Some things aren't very obvious to me. This is one of them.

@NathanOsman hm, is that so people can follow their own code without switching, or maybe it is dyanimic or something... just what i was thinking at the moment(no real coding background)

When do we start closing abandoned questions? @Oli 's script is giving me some that are only 3 months old..

2:50 AM
@Seth Doesn't jrg's document have a guideline for that?

I can't find it..
Where did it go?

Thanks.
Is older than 4 months.. Wow. So three is too new.

3:03 AM
@EliahKagan I'll delete those comments here now askubuntu.com/questions/138388/…

3:21 AM
@Seth - I'm a buy a Google Nexus guy on the Ubu-phone/Ubu-touch thing. It seems to be the most viable options from what I've read (and I'm looking at it as my next tech purchase)

Nexus is cool.

I'm sure something else is tested, but vote for unlocked boot-loader from the factory with your wallet

Comes with an unlocked bootloader?

As far as I know, that's why it was chosen. A boot-loader you can checkbox unlock (no rooting/jailbreaking required) and a good supply chain that won't expire.

Is anyone on raring here?

3:29 AM
I have a raring vm lying around, but I run LTS on my daily driver

I got a bug to fix which requires me to observe something on raring. Can you help?

@CallmeV Ah interesting.
@TheLordofTime I agree we don't really need a comment for that.

i read.
hence me saying close both.

@Mahesh I don't have time tonight, but if you want I may be able to help tomorrow afternoon. (starts new job tomorrow AM). Ping me with directions to replicate or something if that's a viable option

3:31 AM
It would be nice if people added some input to this: github.com/AskUbuntu/ProFormaComments/pull/30

@Seth /me only did the commit so that #15 would have a "valid for consideration" commit, since the original committer went AWOL

@CallmeV Sure, thanks. :)

@TheLordofTime Right.

eeeyup
@Seth you may want to thumbs-down pull #15 too
then there's two thumbs down.

@Mahesh I'm US Eastern to give you an idea of time framing

I'll think about it ;)

ping me back when you have the output. thanks. :)

mousepad && save as Mahesh.py
goes back to a "we should have instances of varying versions of ubu on AWS so we can VNC in and test things" from forever ago

3:43 AM
@CallmeV It will not print out anything. It either throws an error, or it runs.
btw, did we do anything to the fake oli?

got it. i was commenting on the reason we need cleanroom VMs on AWS

Its been few days since I last encountered him in chat.

@Mahesh we firebombed them.
:P

Oli was here today. One of my posts was fireballed shortly before an Oli post

oh.
@TheLordofTime them as in his posts or we bombed the user?

3:47 AM
@Mahesh we firebombed them. Everything about fakeoli is now part of a pile of ashes in the middle of /dev/sde6
(although if it isn't, we should finish the firebombing)

@TheLordofTime sde is probably a typo

nope.
i meant sde.
/me has 6 separate drives on one of his systems, the 5th drive is sde

then you need to reconsider drive size for usage.

or not :P
sde's a read-only mounted drive
from two no-longer-boot drives ago
(had no choice but to hook it up to access things for recovery purposes, and just left it in place)

i still say simplify things. 5 drives is absurd

3:51 AM
only 3 are actually used
and those three are RAID SCSI
(the system seems to interpret them as sdx drives, because of fails)

I didn't get the email?

Can't. It's private beta. (I didn't commit, I know nothing about Arduino.. Wish I did)
Did you commit?

I think so. I do think so

I'll check. You hadn't last time I checked.

@Takkat: he's trying to format a SD card in ubuntu to install arm on that thing

I see. Well then. let it go.

Actually, it's even less about arch than that. He's trying to reclaim full use of an SD card that he previously used for that purpose.

Thanks for clarity.

@Rinzwind Well, yeah. me too. Tonight, I'm not feeling like an ass.

It takes a certain amount of cajones.

Using tottiTaking snapshot of root partition will make possible to roll back to previous state. This is very helpful when something went wrong and/or data loss occurs. Using tottiIs there a offline version of askubuntu.com ?. Can I download it as in Wikipedia ?. or any app that mirror it ?

If you have a system you love, everything is backed up behind the scenes.
Mine is.

9:24 AM
Storage backup, cloud backups. DVD backups on Sundays.
This sounds really stupid, but, learning how to backup my dotfiles to github was a big step for me.

I'm a big big big fan of remastersys for that
assuming you don't have a load of cruft on your main system (I have my media on a storage drive that's seperate from the main system), being able to make a bootable DVD that boots into your last backup and being able to restore to it is great

@JourneymanGeek How is it better than backing up your dotfiles to githib and/or using etckeeper?

@maggotbrain: nearly instant bare metal recovery?
I boot into the livedisk, tell it to install, surf the web, listen to music etc etc
then I just need to fix up any propitiatory drivers I need

ok. Iguess that I am more concerned with having my app and sys preferences available.

this will do that.

9:34 AM
My app preferences are separate from my apps.

is this good enough:
http://askubuntu.com/questions/279825/is-it-possible-to-take-a-snapshot-of-or-other-filesystem-like-in-virtualbox

good point though.

yeah, I do that, mainly cause I dualboot, and both my boot drives are tiny

@JourneymanGeek So, can you build a system and just pull down your prefs from a master server?

nope
I can pop in a livecd and reinstall my system exactly as it was the last boot
outside some drivers the ubuntu installer blacklists
I guess if I was crazy enough, I can set up a networked install...

9:39 AM
@JourneymanGeek gotcha. I guess those are different things then.

I love logging on to a different system and git cloning my vim and bash alias stuff.

@maggotbrain Yeah. That seems sweet.
I should set that up

@AmithKK It is simple stupid and I am embarrassed for not learning it earlier.
I was a dumbass thinking dropbox would be great for porting files around.

@maggotbrain Not small files
media. Yes

9:43 AM
@AmithKK What do you mean?

@flimm sorry I did not see you made an answer and sorta stole yours as part of mine :-D

@maggotbrain Well.. all these config files just dont fit properly in dropbox :P
Anybody still want a git-based file system?

@AmithKK Sure. It works.

An FS where that would work
and it would instantly restore your config

I would never use that for my business networks, but for my 5 or 6 system home network, sure. Why not?

9:56 AM

@maggotbrain old news Eliah >:)

@Rinzwind wat?
oooh. You mean my date for the evening.

yeah Eliah is interested in dating her >:DDDDDDDDDD

That's not spam. That's my date.
sheesh. wish you guys could be a bit more discriminating.

10:08 AM
@EliahKagan That is a legit Q. What are are you linking to?

@maggotbrain It was a link to a spam answer. Now that the answer has disappeared, users who cannot view deleted posts just see the question. You're right that the question is not spam.

June wants to date us. But we dont like her.

I kinda feel bad for constantly touching people's questions and editing such petty little nonsense like commas and capitalization. It feels like I'm being an attention whore.

@Rinzwind I disagree! A comma can make a world, of difference!!!

"To my parents, Ayn Rand and God."
Soooooooooo god is your dad ey?

@Rinzwind See. That really bugs me. Do I use use Oxford commas, or not?

Never put a comma to the end of a line,

@Rinzwind That is awesome.
Commas do mess me up when I am reviewing answers. What, indeed, do I do?

The wikipedia article on the serial comma is actually better, broader, and more thorough than that English.SE question.
In punctuation, a serial comma or series comma (also called Oxford comma and Harvard comma) is a comma placed immediately before the coordinating conjunction (usually and, or, or nor) in a series of three or more terms. For example, a list of three countries might be punctuated either as "Portugal, Spain, and France" (with the serial comma), or as "Portugal, Spain and France" (without the serial comma). Opinions among writers and editors differ on whether to use the serial comma. In American English, a majority of style guides mandate use of the serial comma, including The Chicago Manua...
I almost always use the serial comma in my own writing. I would not change someone else's writing to use it, unless they usually used it and I was changing a minority of instances, such that my changes didn't introduce ambiguity.

Q: Question validation error info

maazzaJust wasted my time trying to understand what 'your question does not meet our quality standards'. The error was that i did not put a capital at the beginning of each sentence. I suggest to either remove this 'validation' or to give a better error message.

There really is no widely agreed-upon rule about whether or not the serial comma should be used. The only widespread agreement is that within a single work, it is best to follow the same convention throughout, except when a situation arises that calls for it to be broken.

@EliahKagan Well, considering all of the run on sentences that we get here, how would you propose to adhere to proper grammar while still respecting the OP's intentions? ;-P

y ordo kraffy? waist o me timez.

I am still re-reading a copy of Strunk and White in a feeble attempt to improve my grammar. That's part of why I like this place.
@Takkat Well said.
I mean yo

yepp.

10:44 AM
It is interesting, as an editor, to attempt to correct grammar as well as translate technical concepts.
yo.

lol :D
and yo!
Btw yo is short for yolo?

Mostly I leave editing of spelling or grammar issues to people more native to the language than me. Yo.

4 more upvotes and I catch Luis >:D

@Takkat Is English not your primary language?

Takkat is German >:D
Rinzwind is Dutch

@Rinzwind has all the background information needed.

well. technically Rinzwind is a fictional character created by Terry Pratchett.

@Rinzwind Och. You both write better than the natives. Unfortunately.

No idea where Takkat comes from >:DDD

YOLT YOU DOLT!
English isn't my native language either

@Takkat: darn, cause on the internet, no one ought to know you're a dog ;p

-.-

@maggotbrain I'm not sure I understand the application of the serial comma controversy to that question. The serial comma (or absence thereof) is for comma-delimited lists. Run-on sentences are not usually lists.
