Q: Will Ubuntu 12.10 or 12.04 Run Very Smoothly on My Computer Or Should I Go With Lubuntu?

user141416I have a somewhat old computer with mid-range hardware. Here's what my computer has: 1.8 Ghz Willamette Pentium 4 256 Kb L2 Cache nVidia Geforce 6200 LE 256 mB DDR2 1024 mB DDR at 133 mhz 40 GB HD 5400 RPM Before, I used Fedora 17 with my computer, and installation was somewhat long, about 25% ...

dupe of something..

Q: How can i restore the swap drive used by ubuntu, back to windows 7?

Merjottoi just installed ubuntu 12.10 on my laptop (which has windows 7) but i used my second data drive as a swap for ubuntu. How can i restore this swap drive back so it can be accessed by win7 again ? (Everything else works normally as a dual boot sys there is no problem). Thanks in advance

that's a dupe too.
@OctavianDamiean \o
I'm probably going to get a Landscape subscription just for managing my private computers. It is awesome!
@Seth it's a dupe of this: trollisms.blogspot.com
heh.
17:11
i mean, i'm sure there's a better dupe...on site... but er... windows was faster than fedora, but i'm complaining on an ubuntu site...

VRU
Hi Guys!!
Hello @VRU
What's up?
VRU
VRU
Hi Seth.... I now own a pre loaded Ubuntu Laptop .... DELL Inspiron14 + Ubuntu 12.04
I am looking to install Windows 7 side to it, so that I can use few applications which are not supported bu Ubuntu like WebEx
17:24
@VRU Ooh fun :)
@VRU Having trouble?
shudders
You really need WebEx?
VRU
VRU
so now to install windows 7 I assume, all I need is to install insert win7 complete installation and there after insert Ubuntu live USB and try to rescue boot loader, right?
More or less.
yawn
@VRU make sure you left free space on your drive first.
VRU
VRU
@OctavianDamiean Yes I really need it.... I actually installed WebEx on Ubuntu using WINE but the clarity has gone low
17:26
@VRU and if not, resize your partitions first.
@VRU Yeah, pretty much.
You have to shrink your partition, split it and then create a NTFS partition first.
otherwise, well...
Yea, what @TheLordofTime said.
watches the mushroom cloud
17:27
@VRU I wouldn't do it. Just sayin'.
VRU
VRU
Yeah Forgot!!! first I need to re-size the Hard Disk ... Ubuntu has used all the available 500GB..... I guess I have to use gparted
@OctavianDamiean what would you do instead?
VRU
VRU
@OctavianDamiean yeah .. could you let us know, what would be your alternatives ..
@VRU Do this from a LiveCD or LiveUSB ENVIRONMENT ONLY
DO NOT RESIZE THE PARTITION WHILE THE SYSTEM IS RUNNING!
Otherwise, bad things.
Look for alternatives, use another computer or something but I wouldn't mess with the system.
VRU
VRU
17:32
Noted!
Just for that application.
VRU
VRU
@OctavianDamiean I just wanted to stick with one... so I am doing this... other wise .. even I feel the same(just use ubuntu as it is)....
@TheLordofTime can you come again, you wanted me to use LiveCD of gparted, right?
Someone with a better crystal ball than mine is needed to deduct what the OP wants here:

Q: Getting configure command of php

Dipu RI am using an ubutnu OS, I have installed LAMP stack using "tasksel", I am not able to find the "Configure Command" while I am going through phpinfo. But , in the same OS I am able to see the "Configure Command" only if I am compiling the php from source. Is anyone can explain how the tasksel hid...

standby, busy with DB debugging
@VRU Yea, use gparted from an Ubuntu LiveCD.
VRU
VRU
17:44
@OctavianDamiean Okay ... I will have a quick look at it... just to make it sure... I am not suppose to use the gparted partition editor to make free space
@guntbert wow, tasksel
it's been a while
Well you are. gparted is installed on the LiveCD.
@DanHulme it's still useful in certain circumstances but it's dangerous as hell when you try removing a task
@OctavianDamiean the gparted version on the current live CD has a nasty bug, you cannot resize an extended partition with it
wut really?
sounds familiar
Wait wasn't that for 12.04?
Let me check something.
@VRU You should use the GParted Partition Editor to resize the partitions. BUT ONLY FROM WITHIN a LiveCD or LiveUSB "Live" environment.
i.e. boot to the Live Environment first.
huh, interesting.
oh, and back up any critical data you need to keep.
just in case.
The updated version didn't land in Ubuntu yet ...
Not even in Raring.
17:52
@OctavianDamiean it might not ever reach Raring, now.
@OctavianDamiean FeatureFreeze.
feature freeze doesn't prevent bug fixes from landing though.
true, but it does block version increments unless it can't be avoided.
Well I know, I'm just a bit surprised because the fix was released back in July ...
VRU
VRU
@guntbert oh that sounds ALERT.... but i am going to make free space from /dev/sda3 - ext4 - which has unused size and flaged as boot
17:53
I don't think this guy knows what a chorded keyboard really is.
So in theory this could have landed in 12.10 already.
Gui
Gui
I need a vacation.
Well, in that case you should probably create a gparted LiveDisk.
That way you'll get the latest stable gparted version.
VRU
VRU
@OctavianDamiean Okay... I will START this with creating the Live USB.....
Make sure it is a gparted Live USB
VRU
VRU
18:01
@OctavianDamiean yeah I am there... I am thinking to create the Live USB on my windows desktop or on my ubuntu laptop.... I guess that should not be a problem .. both mean same... and thinking to go with Tuxboot...?
Haven't tried Tuxboot yet.
I've always used Unetbootin
VRU
VRU
@OctavianDamiean I have downloaded the LinuxLive USB Creator and the GParted Live .iso file and I am creating the Live USB on my windows machine once done , will insert this Live USB in my Ubuntu laptop and make a restart so as to boot from USB.. once there I will keep you posted
VRU
VRU
18:26
Live USB started in Default mode
its asking about key map... what is it?
@OctavianDamiean should I choose "Don't touch Keymap" ?
That's basically your keyboard layout.
WAT!?
VRU
VRU
@OctavianDamiean yeah done .. now opened GParted in X window
@OctavianDamiean I have resized my drive and got unallocated space..... am I done?
at the bottom I read ... 1 operation pending .... is this complete
?
@jrg Hi!
jrg
jrg
18:41
@mateo_salta I'll make sure there is a couch for you at the venue, let me know if you need anything. :)
@VRU hello!
@jrg awesome!
VRU
VRU
@jrg I am in middle of creating partition using GParted Live
jrg
jrg
@VRU cool. is @OctavianDamiean helping?
VRU
VRU
I wanted to create free space from my existing ubuntu hard disk so as to install windows side to it
jrg
jrg
ah, sounds... "fun".
VRU
VRU
18:44
I have re size'd the hard disk and I now see unallocated space
but at the bottom I read 1 operation pending
@VRU I think you need to hit the "apply" button
since gparted doesn't do things the moment you click them, so you can set it up how you like then have it do it for real
VRU
VRU
@mateo_salta yep went through Edit --> Apply
@VRU what version windows are you installing?
VRU
VRU
but it did not ask for formatting in to any specific file system... it just started shrink
@mateo_salta Windows 7
windows should be able to format an empty partition as it likes
but I think you will need to re-do GRUB after it is done
VRU
VRU
18:49
@mateo_salta Okay it seems to be completed.... so should I just restart..
Sorry had to run for a second, popcorn, fruit gum and coke ain't a good combination ...
VRU
VRU
@mateo_salta yeah point noted... that step I need to do it after completing the windows installation, right?
Who would have thought.
VRU
VRU
@OctavianDamiean :-)
@vru yep
18:51
So where are we at?
@jrg Oh hey there. :)
@VRU seems so far you have Ubuntu and an empty partition right?
VRU
VRU
@OctavianDamiean Done Re Sizing the existing Hard Disk.... I now see unallocated created
Ah cool.
Well, in theory you should be ready by now.
VRU
VRU
should I just restart and change the boot options to boot from CD as I have windows 7 on a CD and I guess I need to make a new USB Live for Ubuntu
@OctavianDamiean @mateo_salta does it matter about the Ubuntu version I have on the laptop and the one I suppose to create... for boot rescue
@VRU as far as making a usb, and telling the program what version it is making usb for? or just running the os?
18:58
In terms of reinstalling grub.
VRU
VRU
@mateo_salta I have ubuntu 12.04 installed .... now after installing windows .... I have to install the GRUB ... for which I assume to create a Live USB for Ubuntu 12.04
Well, Quantal has a newer grub version than Precise.
VRU
VRU
@OctavianDamiean Yes
ah, ok
VRU
VRU
@OctavianDamiean Okay
18:59
To be honest, I've never tried to mix versions like that. To make sure you should go with a Precise image.
VRU
VRU
@OctavianDamiean Okay
@OctavianDamiean @mateo_salta now I am stuck at exiting GParted
@OctavianDamiean I suppose it should work, but... just to be safe.
VRU
VRU
in the tool I have went through GParted--> Quit. and it closed the inside tab
but the Environment still open
Well, just reboot the system. :)
VRU
VRU
I see a Exit button but neither click nor enter works
19:02
If you can just issue a init 6 command.
VRU
VRU
@mateo_salta few attempts of double click worked
rebooted
back to ubuntu
checking Disk Utility for changes
@OctavianDamiean @mateo_salta yeah it shows free space in Disk utility
VRU
VRU
@OctavianDamiean @mateo_salta should I edit the file system/format the free space here in Disk Utility
Now you're ready for Windows.
Windows can handle that.
VRU
VRU
19:09
Okay
@OctavianDamiean I have Ubuntu 12.04.1 iso with me and my laptop pre installed shows ubuntu 12.04
will this matter
Nah, that's fine.
man bash | grep -w read # Use -w to match the search on word boundaries. This will match 'read', but not 'readline' or 'thread'.
Best tip ever.
VRU
VRU
@OctavianDamiean for some reason my laptop is unable to boot from CD ROM
it directly boots Ubuntu after changing the sequence in boot option
@VRU Are you sure the boot order is right?
I mean the boot order settings in your BIOS.
Is the Windows 7 disk original?
VRU
VRU
Yeah in my laptop F12 is set for boot options and I change there and it just boots in to Ubuntu
Yeah it is
And you're sure booting from the DVD drive is the first option?
VRU
VRU
19:25
@OctavianDamiean Yes
Uhm that shouldn't happen.
Were you at the computer all the time during the boot up process?
VRU
VRU
I am giving one more try
It might ask you to hit a key.
Not sure how Windows 7 handles that.
VRU
VRU
@OctavianDamiean Nope... Even after changing the boot sequence and even trying from setup did not work
o_O
Your disk isn't bootable then.
VRU
VRU
19:30
I hear the CD drive spinning sound but the ubuntu window comes up very fast
Don't have another explanation.
What notebook is that?
VRU
VRU
DELL INSPIRON 14 MODEL 3420
comes with Ubuntu 12.04 pre installed
@OctavianDamiean Well its 1:06AM here and I need to wake up at 5:30AM
I thank your support
cheers
bye!
Well, I'm out of ideas. Don't quite understand why it won't let you boot from the disk ...
VRU
VRU
When I am in Ubuntu I can see the contents of CD
may be I will try with another CD tomorrow
Bye for Now

Hello
can someone tell me what symlinking is?
(pin drops)
I can ask later I spose
@lightning you could also ask on unix.stackexchange.com :-)

@RolandiXor bout time you made yourself known, I have been waiting all day!

@RolandiXor around?

Okay, well when you have time you might consider merging this:

Q: Data visualization tools?

kkpI am looking for data visualisation tools on Ubuntu. I have been using R and gnuplot, however, I am looking for better than these and also simple to use (not office excel).

@RolandiXor: o/
@GeorgeEdison \o
How are things?
21:01
Busy lol
@VRU what about hitting F8 a bunch of times on boot, otherwise... I'm not sure
okay I'm back
@Gui sup?
@GeorgeEdison, @RolandiXor o/
@Seth Thanks. I got pullled into a con call and spaced calling for a merge of the two. :-/
@mateo_salta hey
21:03
I just discovered a glitch with the code that was pulling data from a remote Git repository.
@maggotbrain np. Just making sure you know you can ;)
@GeorgeEdison interesting
@GeorgeEdison Well I guess by now I know who to talk to when it comes to bugs...
The tricky thing is that 'git clone' pulls all of the revisions from a remote source.
In order to reproduce the bug, I have to be able to only pull part of a repository.
So I think I am going to need to use 'git fetch' instead.
@RolandiXor I have another merge candidate as well...
21:06
@Seth a question?
I see unity-tweak-tool made it into the repos over the weekend.
3
@GeorgeEdison yep
@GeorgeEdison yerp.
@Seth aight
21:07
I wish my packages made it in that quickly :P
The latest release of StackApplet in the repos. is 1.4.
...which was released nearly two years ago.
@GeorgeEdison Yeah, I know.
I'm almost ready to become a Debian maintainer just to get my packages in.
@Seth done.
@RolandiXor Thanks. What about the other one?
Did you see the comment?
@Seth which one?
I am a bit frazzled from multitasking
21:12
@Seth just to be clear: any user of any rep can request a merge if they find good candidate Qs

@maggotbrain Yes that's right.
@maggotbrain only Seth can...
Don't be fooled!
>:}
@RolandiXor Speaking of that...
OK @Seth, what's your pager number?
I'll filter all my reqeusts through @Seth then.
;-)
@maggotbrain What!?!?! You think I still have one of those? I moved to prepaid a long time ago :P
21:14
LOL
heh. nice
@Seth wth...
IKR XD
It is apparently a paid ring of spammers.
You would think I'd be bored of the walking dead by now... Must be pretty popular.
21:16
But that is all I can say.
That... is... bizarre.
@Seth: Please send that into gemsfromstackexchange.tumblr.com
I don't have tumblr ;-)
What's going on?
@Seth Can I post it then?
@GeorgeEdison Yeah go ahead :)
21:28
nevermind. read it closer. weird.
@GeorgeEdison would the separate NitroShare library allow for writing a client on ppc-mac
@mateo_salta The one thing holding up a PPC build of the NitroShare library is Qt5 support on PPC-Mac.
I'm not sure if Qt5 will build on any PPC Macs.
If it will build, then there's no reason NitroShare couldn't run on it.
yeah, don't think it will. I think i barely got 4.7 on there
@Seth Have him re-install pciutils?
@maggotbrain Worth a try. Why don't you add a comment.
I see what you mean:
> "PPC support has been removed.
thanks.
@GeorgeEdison oh well, I'll concentrate efforts on new stuff
@RolandiXor you there buddy
21:44
@LuisAlvarado ,

hi Oli
@Gui welcome back!
Oli
Oli
@Seth Yeah it was got a few emails about it over the weekend and they've posted to the stackapps post. Was an API bug and it's fixed.
ok got to the mod right now roland, thanks
@Oli Good :)
21:59
@maggotbrain that guy replied to your comment...
@LuisAlvarado you're welcome :)
@Seth Crud. That's lame. I replied and I have to step away for a bit.
@maggotbrain See you later :)

Q: AU policy on questions about root login?

htorqueFrom http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=716201: Policy Tutorials explaining how to enable the root account for a graphical login or autologin will not be supported on the forums and will be moved to the Jail. Although we believe people should have the freedom to run their computers...

I'm seeing a bunch of questions which end up saying "How do I automatically login as root via [script]" and it's raising a TON of red flags with me...
Gui
Gui
@TheLordofTime yeah nothing good can come from that.
@RolandiXor @JorgeCastro opinions?
@Gui agreed, hence the question of whether we should revisit that initial meta.
22:38
link to those questions?
most of the other ones've disappeared.. i mistyped :/
this ONE QUESTION raised a red flag though.

Q: Can I write a python script that will automatically load a terminal as sudo?

packpatfanI use sudo a lot and I am constantly having to restart my terminal (development of programs that froze usually) and it's a pain in the butt to constantly put in the sudo command and then my password. Is there a way I could through Python (or a script file) get an already sudo terminal? I wasn't ...

The answer on it raised an even bigger red flag
shrug, just add a warning on the answer
oop the answer was removed...

Q: Why is it bad to run as root?

MussnoonI've often come across posts on forums or other websites where you see people joking in such a manner about running/logging in as root as if it's something awful and everyone ought to know about it. However, there isn't much that a search reveals on the matter. It maybe widely known to Linux expe...

you just can toss that link in an answer

I humbly ask anyone who values the Android platform to reshare this post.
so you can't sell to US, unless you collect taxes? how does amazon get away with this stuff...
I probably can sell to you.
I just need to do a bunch of paperwork and/or research into tax stuff.
@mateo_salta they take fees. :P
and those fees go into tax reports as "taxes"
:P
It's actually Google in this case, not Amazon.
@GeorgeEdison I mentioned it since amazon doesn't charge tax on orders, they make the customers report what they buy on-line
23:08
@mateo_salta I'm not 100% sure how the Amazon store works (the place where Kindle Fire users buy apps) but from what I can gather, they take care of taxes for you for certain countries.
@GeorgeEdison why would you not say git for android, because i'm badass like that
also i completely grok your taxes point
Well, I've mentioned it here, but nowhere else.
I want to "surprise" my G+ followers - when I finally release it.
heh. point taken. i just don't get secretive when someone could spider your social network and have it in a grand total of 5 seconds
They could - I don't deny that.
so who would be behind a google-reader clone kickstarter?
23:11
As a web service?
as a webapp that uses offline storage for everything.

thanks. i went for maximum funny
@GeorgeEdison I'm having a go at using homebrew instead of macports to get gcc4.7, looks promising so far, all-ready alerted me I was down a version of xcode and other stuff.
@mateo_salta Great!
23:19
so we will see, just wanted to say I haven't given up yet
I'll be adding and testing Clang support fairly soon too.
23:33
@TheLordofTime Haha, sorry for that. I don't do those things, but if the user really want to is at their own risk. Of course that your answer is good, but I will let that comment live for a while..
23:54
Hey @Lucio I see you have 2k now. Congrats!
@Lucio the point was: "Don't do that often"
because the more one spreads "Oh, here's unsafecrap to do: [commands]", well...
@maggotbrain That guy responded again... no such file or directory.. what in the world is going on..
I just got another steward badge \o/
