FWIW, the mods tend to ping me when stuff gets really bad - I blacklisted a few "walking dead spam" related terms last night on AU and 30-some attempts were blocked. This could probably be automated somewhat - it's reasonably effective for handling short-term floods. — Shog9 1 hour ago
WOW.
@TheLordofTime I'm agree with you with that. Believe me, I'm agree

Q: Log in fails after installing additional drivers

GuiSo I updated my graphic drivers using the additional drivers option and restarted my computer upon completion. Now when I try to log in everything looks fine, I put in my password and hit enter, what comes up next is the screen will one(1) distorted icon on the desktop, and the background. Noth...

@Seth as you can see, after that, I quickly open thousand of post looking for a minimal edit to do (@Gui sorry but is true) :P
@Seth noice. i pointed it out a week ago and they called it an isolated incident
00:26
hello
Hey, riddle me something. I've unhearted an old computer with a dying hard drive. It has two partitions, Windows XP - which suffered from 600 unreadable sectors and blue screens on boot - and Ubuntu 9.04 (!)
Ubuntu works fine and I'd like it to connect it to the internet but Network Manager isn't cooperating
The applet says network manager isn't running. sudo NetworkManager doesn't fix that
System Adminstration Network says the devices are not configured
what kind of network device?
Ethernet?
I'm trying with the WiFi on eth4
oh
how can you have wifi on eth4?
Yeah I know Ethernet would be ideal
I just now WiFi is on eth4
00:31
ooh...poor old computer :(
sounds like the drivers aren't loaded
Hm.
Sudo ifconfif says I have eth3 eth4 eth3:avahi and lo
All are UP and RUNNING
eth4 has even received packets
sudo iwconfig eth4 seems to work
I'll try my little network scanning script
@badp iirc starting nm-applet kicks everything in to gear
... Interface does not support scanning
Yeah either the WiFi card died or the drivers crapped up
I guess I'll try rebooting and then Ethernet
WAT. Wireless interface should NOT appear as eth4
00:38
@Seth massive lameage.
This is what you get when you install the rather broken 7.10 and upgrade it all the way to 9.04 :-P
lol, nice
@Seth Congrats. I'm a couple of votes away from 3k with my last answer. quite a few more reviews bfore I get my gold star. ;-)
I'm just happy I didn't have to mess with grub to guess my password
back
Yay a reboot fixed the issue. Thanks guys
Oh dear this is nostalgia land
@AbrahamVanHelpsing Yeah... that was weird.
@maggotbrain \o/

ptomasroosIs there a way to disable all keybindings in unity? I've read this question - I would prefer to not manually by going through a GUI.

@badp :O
@maggotbrain I'm thinking xmodmap
hrmm. I'll take a look.
00:47
How is inside Ubuntu-touch on the top links bracket for an MMA quick knockout compilation on youtube...
Might need some clarification about exactly what keybindings..
@AbrahamVanHelpsing Either you are logged in or it's a featured video.
smh...i was logged in. makes more sense now.
01:04
@Lucio yeah. Congrats. I saw you needed one more vote to push you over the edge. So...I pushed. :-)

ayr_tonSome knows if there's a good place for download forum badges to put in user signatures? I've searched a lot in google but without success.

I've almost got 1k rep on MSO :D
@TheLordofTime already done..
@maggotbrain Have you VTC'd that one ;)
One question with 43 upboats helps with that
<.<
so, when does the spam usually hit, if anyone knows.
@TheLordofTime who ticked that for migration? i just voted to close. it's not a q about AU, it's a question about uf

burn it with fire.
@Seth No. I'm going slowly through the queue my first time around.
@maggotbrain when multiple people say HERE ACTIVELY it's offtopic, it's offtopic
you're safe to VTC that one.
@TheLordofTime gotcha. and done
@maggotbrain me and seth and a bunch of others, we tend to know things :P
if he and i and someone else sometimes say it's offtopic, IT'S OFFTOPIC
then of course there's the spam...
01:20
i'm admittedly a little catty, so disregard about half of my recommendations... fair warning
which the Ask Ubuntu AntiSpam Squad is around for.
speaking of which, when's the spam usually hit
i want to inflate my flags count again with that :P
@TheLordofTime Sure. I just figured that out by jumping directly to the Q instead of through the queue.
@TheLordofTime How many now?
@TheLordofTime heh. it's not consistent afaik.
@Seth including two NotAnAnswers today... I'm at 452 flags.
01:21
@maggotbrain Yeah, it's best to take it slower at first.. You'll get the hang of it soon :)
I ONLY NEED 48 MOAR TO BE GOLD BADGED AS A MARSHAL!
@Seth This.
I'm going for the sportsmanship badge...
@TheLordofTime I think that spam is usually hitting around maybe 03:00ish UTC
so, about two hours then
/me is UTC-04:00 right now
for me badges just happen. you don't "go for them" except for a couple... like reversal or unsung hero. the other ones just happen eventually
01:22
1:22 here.
@AbrahamVanHelpsing yeah, well, Marshall and Deputy were ones I gunned for
i think when I got Deputy that was with that old style flag weight system rather than NumberOfGoodFlags
and THAT i had to gun for, sitting on /review a lot
now most of my flags are NaA's
except for the spam :P
I'm trying to be the first person to get steward in all review categories.
if you just flag, they just happen. /me was more looking to ones that are statistically improbable
of course I had a good number of flags from before that too, so...
well, IIRC there are spurts between 7-9PST on weekends and 1-3AM weekdays
01:24
@AbrahamVanHelpsing VTC != Flag :P
roughly
@TheLordofTime /me knows. if you run out of closevotes, it's okay to flag. so...
@AbrahamVanHelpsing it's harder for me to use all my closevotes outside of /review
most of my flags are from outside of /review too

Q: Need to auto-login after logout on ubuntu

OmniCorpI've set up a kiosk using Ubuntu 12.04, and I'd like to have it autologin after a user logs out or if the screen locks, in case someone manages to get back to lightdm or tries to login to the non-kiosk account after a reboot. I've tried setting display-setup-script in lightdm.conf to run xautoloc...

I'm so tired of capitalizing people's 'i's.. We need a script.

@AbrahamVanHelpsing Yeah.
@Seth So, none of the other sites are getting this spam/content at all? hmm

@maggotbrain AU is gold so indeed WE ARE SPECIAL
@Rinzwind I'm not sure what part you're referring to as sarcastic. But I do think some of your answer is factually incorrect. I don't think all or even most BIOSes have "master" passwords, which you appear to be referring to. If someone doesn't know the BIOS password and there is no master, they really do have to open the machine.
@EliahKagan "1 knife, 10 fingers. No contest." <-- pretty sure he was referring to that
Also, while full disk encryption does have some advantages over just encrypting one's home directory, you haven't made the case that those advantages apply to the OP. It would probably be sufficient to encrypt the home directory.

@EliahKagan, what has been achieved by reverting my edit " removed "the data for" as it's an unnecessarily complicated construction that means the same thing" here. Are you saying that "the recently used file list" is actually "recently-used.xbel" and not derived from it?

I had the box but it was so bad I had to return it after a few days
12:56
o_o ... so 13.04/13.10 is to only be supported for 9 months now ... time to update the wiki tags.
but the difference is
people can skip releases now and upgrade
skip releases - that bit I missed. How are the devs going to manage that in a robust way?
it's not in the notes, it was in the -release IRC channel, they haven't published the updated policy yet
but as it was explained to me they need to test from XXX to LTS anyway
also I'm not sure if you can skip from non-lts to another non-lts
I think he means "skip" as in, you can upgrade any non-LTS to the LTS.
I think
but anyway, they were talking about it, I'm sure once they decide they'll let people know
13:16
:)
@fossfreedom hmm? link to source? :)
oooh with rollng release!?
I never expected them to go for roling release :D
Wait what? Didn't they just recently EXTEND support life for LTS and now they're cutting it in half? It's going to make it harder for devs to target "next LTS" and justify the man-power to maintain software for Ubuntu.
@AbrahamVanHelpsing no no for NON LTS they are cutting it :=)
9 months for non-lts - LTS support is still the same.
13:19
ha I was quicker >:)
@Rinzwind OHHHHHH. okay.
plus with a roling release it does not matter. Everyone will roll into the next version if they keep updating :)
its not a rolling release ... "clearly voted against moving Ubuntu into a rolling release model"
grrr >:
why is 1/2 the article about roling releases? :(
the blogger had to pad - big time.
13:23
:D
Yes. I like that as long as it works. We'll need to put a run cat /etc/lsb-release in to standard troubleshooting steps if "enable users to continuously track the development focus of Ubuntu without having to explicitly upgrade" is true.
That seems to sort of lean towards something like a rolling release without a full conversion.
that statement sounds like a new name for the current daily builds.
Hmm, that's possible.
Its going to make AU a nightmare with issues about "continuous track release" issues.
I'm excited about lightworks
Wait a second
what will happen to version tags
13:28
@fossfreedom Will that release schedule fall in the alpha/beta release bucket or is that going to be all releases magically convert to daily build at some point in time.
Ping @fossfreedom
your guesses on this stuff is as good as mine :/
print(bool(ask.question("Is ubuntu moving to a rolling release")))
If it turns into all non-lts releases are sort of alpha-beta releases, it's going to be a support nightmare.

Q: How to rip an audio track in flac from a DVD video?

remjgMore and more audio CD are sold together with a DVD video containing bonus tracks. I want to rip only the audio part of those videos using a losseless audio codec, ideally flac for me. Is there an easy way to rip audio tracks from a DVD video in flac?

It does work if you fall back to LTS is for users and servers. Everything else is for developers and edgers. I'm not sure that point will be taken well though.
@AbrahamVanHelpsing Most newbie Indians generally listen to that

Yeah?
I'll stick with LTS releases - I got better stuff to do than fight bugs and issues with new releases.
DO NOT INSTALL NON-LTS RELEASES.OR OS'ES THAT ARE NOT UBUNTU OR YOUR COMPUTER WILL EXPLODE
@AmithKK Not that. Just be able to fix things. If you need paste-ables, you need LTS.
@fossfreedom Yes, that. Unless you need a specific package of a specific version that isn't in LTS.
@fossfreedom foss! we do it for the rep on AU. So the more bugs the better >:D
