Q: Log in fails after installing additional drivers

Hey, riddle me something. I've unhearted an old computer with a dying hard drive. It has two partitions, Windows XP - which suffered from 600 unreadable sectors and blue screens on boot - and Ubuntu 9.04 (!)

Ubuntu works fine and I'd like it to connect it to the internet but Network Manager isn't cooperating

The applet says network manager isn't running. sudo NetworkManager doesn't fix that

System Adminstration Network says the devices are not configured
