If I add a bounty on an old question because it's outdated and no one adds another answer, the bounty won't automatically go to the most upvoted old answer will it?
no. your bounty won't magically be awarded if that's what you're asking
@AbrahamVanHelpsing Okay good.
Okay done.

Q: How do I configure a joystick or gamepad?

RolandiXorI recently recieved a gamepad (a joystick, like a PS2 controller) from a friend. It's a Logitech Rumblepad 2. How would I configure this in Ubuntu? I would like to use a GUI utility. I tried jstest-gui, but it shows my accelerometer :D!

00:28
Do we have a mod around? @jrg?
@rm-rf What calls you here? (I'm hoping it's not a flag :/ )
@Seth Nope, no flags. Just helpin' you guys out with the spam
I can't delete, but I keep flagging them as spam. Takes 6 to nuke it w/o a mod.
@rm-rf Okay thanks! I once got auto banned because I mentioned spam..
@rm-rf Right. And thank you. I've never seen it go this fast without a mod.
@Seth Oh yeah... someone flagged your chat messages linking to the spam yesterday, asking that they also be removed. I guess other users must've agreed innocently, thus locking you out.
@rm-rf Yeah.. It was something like that.
Ok, I'll also remove the links above so that it doesn't happen again today
00:36
A chat mod popped in and unbanned me.
@rm-rf Can you make sure they're all gone first?
Never mind, they are.
@Seth They're long gone...
Now, something funny.
YAY @RolandiXor!!!
This is some tasty spam.
@Seth hi :D
Another interesting:
@RolandiXor Howdy sharpshooter!
@Seth I was nuking it
I like to hide :D
00:42
Oh. Well it's not fun then :(
You thought it was being taken under by the swamp creatures?
This doesn't look like it's going to be as bad as last nights..
@RolandiXor I did for a little bit.
You missed a couple:
Well, I can't say much, but something was being done about it - though I was the one nuking the spammers.
00:44
Thanks!
np :)
They can be hard to track - but I'll keep an eye on the new users list.
hello
any mods here?
00:45
Yes there are @packpatfan
@RolandiXor Is a mod.
@packpatfan how can I help? :)
Need a question re-opened?
Need advice with a wayward child? Having problems with the wife/girlfriend/husband/boyfriend?
I was wondering how my question is considered off-topic, even though it's about a default Ubuntu question
lol :D
@packpatfan is it about Ubuntu +1?
Ubuntu +1?
@packpatfan I thought so.
What's Ubuntu +1?
The main supported version up one.
00:48
Ubuntu +1 == an unreleased version.
So 12.10 +1 == 13.04
oh. Nope
I am running Ubuntu 12.04 LTS
Well, the likely reason you got this problem is because you mentioned Backtrack
IMHO it is on topic, but only because you are trying to burn from Ubuntu.
oh. Oops, well, it happens with any/all ISOs (BTR5, Ubuntu Studio
I'll reopen it, and leave a comment.
00:49
danke :D
Now, my bit of advice, is that you use more descriptive titles in the future to avoid closures.
And, you're welcome!
Ok, sorry about that
FMI...does the link work?
which link?
oh nvm
I see
The link to the image in my comment
ah
Yes it works
00:53
good. I was wondering because the rest of my blog is Password Protected
@Seth I think it is possible to calibrate joysticks in KDE
Remind me about it - and I'll do some testing, possibly tomorrow, if I'm not busy with work.
lol, Mods with questions :D
Oh! Nice title Seth. Thanks!
woot woot! My post is #1 in active posts :D (jk...I find it kinda cool)
@packpatfan lol. I just re did @RolandiXor 's title ;)
lol the edit system got confused :D
@RolandiXor Thanks :)
I really want to be able to run commands from joystick buttons...
00:55
@Seth you're welcome :)!
@Seth that might be possible with Compiz
There might also be a utility for setting up your system to do this using xinput events
@RolandiXor I know xev didn't see any button presses
It depends on the joystick and the mode it is in.
Logitech Attack 3 in my case
For example I have a rumblepad that can work as a mouse, but only if I put it in a different mode

and I have work to do
OK see you later @RolandiXor.
Course, soon as he leaves the spam will come back...
01:41
lol
@Seth, had another question if you don't mind :)
@Brendan Go ahead :)
@Seth I rebooted and the drive was visible this time! But I can only see folders, not files. Is that normal or irregular for Ubuntu?
@jokerdino This guy is spamming again: askubuntu.com/a/269341/44179 Except this time he added the word "Linux" to his webpage lol.
@Brendan Could be either..
What kind of files do you not see?
Not sure if I've found a definitive pattern yet. For example, went into Program Files > Adobe > Reader 9.0 and there's just nothing in there.
Same deal with iTunes.
01:46
Hmm.
Lemme look around a sec.
@Seth When I tried to get into my friends documents folder, the whole screen kinda went gray for a minute or so...figured it got hung on something bad in the drive
@Seth Would Ubuntu have deleted files? Or would it just not display stuff when it senses trouble?
@Brendan I won't have deleted anything.
@Brendan Yeah when it goes grey it crashed.
(I'm a graphic designer, sorry for the less than technical explanations :P)
So, try pressing Ctrl+H first.
@Brendan No worries, everyone starts at some time :)
@Seth I had a roommate who made me somewhat literate with this stuff :P I assume we're looking for hidden files? If so nothing happened.
01:49
@Brendan Yes, that was what we were looking for. Okay, so next question: What happened to your friends computer that you need to do this?
I mean, it could be something totally different.
(I'm mainly thinking virus here)
I guess she got BSOD'd and Win7 Starter was trying to do system restore and stuff. She didn't want to try that because she didn't want to lose files, so my old roommate said boot up with a USB and poke around. I can try to procure a more detailed explanation.
@Brendan Okay well that could be the reason you aren't seeing anything.. could be.
Try poking around in other folders
do you see any files?
yeah. root has seven files in addition to the folders...autoexec.bat, bootmgr, bootsect.bak, config.sys, hiberfil.sys, and pagefile.sys
Boot folder has files in it...
@Brendan That doesn't look good. These are on the hard drive right?
yes.
01:55
Yeah.. that doesn't seem too good. Try looking in the documents folder. Right now the point is backing data up.
yeah, so I clicked all through Documents and Settings...desktop.ini is the only file I can find. Same deal with the Users folder...nothing.
I'm restarting it now, gonna give Ubuntu another shot at opening it up
@Brendan Okay good. desktop.ini is a weird file to find in those folders..
jrg
jrg
@Seth really, you didn't catch that
ok
you back?
@jrg No, I had to run right then.
@Seth, okay, rebooted and trying to get into documents and settings again...
02:02
@jrg OK
@Brendan Ok then ;)
jrg
jrg
copied?
Yeah
jrg
jrg
K
so now you can get ahold of me if we get another spam thing like that.
need to track down eliah
Yeah, if ever.
He's here right now.

Should this question be updated to "I want someone to fix the ubuntu wiki page for me. HALP." askubuntu.com/questions/269266/…
06:08
no.
if they want the wiki fixed they can do it themselves.
after all it IS a wiki
You see what I meant though.
not really.
because unless you're blind, this section of the wiki page is important:
oh wait that's help.ubuntu.com
not the wiki
yeah, that's harder to change.
I haz problem. Okay you fixed it, but now I have a separate problem. Okay you fixed it, but now I have a separate problem. Okay you fixed it, but now I have a separate problem. Okay you fixed it, but now I have a separate problem. Okay finally, built it. By the way that was so not QA format
actually, the solution is to tell the OC to actually read the page in detail before just "jumping to installing from source"
because there's a nice apt-get command explaining the dependencies they need for using the PPA
and seriously, there's a PPA, AND it's in the repos.
Why bother building from source?
also the page lists the install gail dev libraries command...
so it's just someone being a pain
06:16
so this traces back to PEBKAC
in which case I'd just leave the question or VTC: Not Constructive it.
@AbrahamVanHelpsing I've done a VTC: Not Constructive on it, because the question isn't really constructive as it is.
Alternative could've Too Localized, but meh
@AbrahamVanHelpsing can you add a NARQ relevant comment to askubuntu.com/questions/269390/… ?
i'm kinda stuck on a tablet, and commenting is hard.
I so don't use that userscript
then type one.
is tired and is content to just VTC things and leave them uncommented right now
done
i had to hack my way into the code for my tablet before I could get a proforma script running, but...
it works.

Q: Ubuntu 12.10 update didn't go well, OS is messed app

Elad92I tried to update my Ubuntu 12.04 to 12.10. The update downloaded the needed files and then started setting up the packages. Suddenly, I saw some weird things on the screen, and then I didn't have any top or left bar. I couldn't close an app, couldn't switch between apps (alt+tab, windows key, an...

@guntbert suggest just move the "solution" into the accepted answer.
will do, @fossfreedom
easier just to edit both the question and answer - remove from the question and paste into the answer.
@fossfreedom, ah you were saying I should make the move not just suggest it
yes please :)
early in the morning ... trying to gulp down a large cup of tea to wake up.
09:53
should be done now - just needs approval
cheers
just for waking up with a smile: funny what people regard as obvious
>> guntbert : well its obviously qml for ubuntu touch using the qt sdk, but thanks, i'll post my problem somewhere else :) — user140120 25 mins ago
if its touch related and regards the sdk then its on-topic here.
we love this sort of stuff.
@guntbert I found it on Wikipedia
10:09
@fossfreedom, yeah, but how are we to know when he doesn't say anything about context?
true - and your comment was correct at the time. Since then he's now clarified this in the comment.
@DanHulme you found what? The code snippet?
the definition of QML
if that's the question I think it is
And I didn't look at the tags :-)
Oh, it's not the question I thought. I was thinking of one which was "how can I learn QML?" with no explanation of what QML was. It must be National Talking at Cross Purposes Day today.
10:21
@fossfreedom one last question about that: should the OP be encouraged to edit hist post for clarity? I am not able to edit it myself - as I still have no idea what he is talking about.
yep - we should always encourage new guys to keep re-editing their question rather than dumping new stuff in comments.
10:46
Hey guys! Can you tell me if bash script support any type of timer to execute loops?
Oli
Oli
11:03
@Zignd What sort of timer? sleep?
@Oli Something like that:

execute every 1 second:
-------echo "Hello World"
end execute
Oli
Oli
while sleep 1; do
    echo "Hello world"
done
@Oli ohh thanks, and about this code, 'sleep' is a keyword/reserved word?
Oli
Oli
Actually, people suggest that you should use sleep in the while loop like while sleep 1; do and omit the later sleep.
@Zignd No, it's either /bin/sleep or it's a builtin.
humm, ok, thanks!

@jokerdino - when is the new version of unity-tweak-tool being packaged?
which one?
as in, when is it landing in the ubuntu repo?
13:35
yep
once we fix all the critical bugs with the current version i suppose
in a week or so
ok - cheers. Just looking at the lengthening bug queue. Just wondering. thats all.
hm, that's quite a bit of bugs. we'll send a test package in the PPA for interested people.
yes please ... I was looking at updating various unity questions using unity-tweak-tool over the weekend. I stopped when I realised that there was one-too-many bugs in the current version.
14:01
there will be backports I assume?
backports to 12.10?
the repository for 13.04 is not yet frozen. we can send in a package full of bug fixes before it is released.
NOTE: This bug is for Ubuntu 12.10 and later only. If you experience something similar in 12.04 then please see bug 964270. ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: Since version 1:0.9.8+bzr3319-0ubuntu1, compiz/unity keeps messing up my gsettings (keybindings and WM prefs). This was already covered in bug 1042041, but the change there mostly caused the bug to happen consistently now. At every session startup I have a script to fix my settings like this: --------------- 8< ---------------- gsettings reset org.gnome.desktop.wm.preferences auto-raise gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.wm.keybindings lower "['<Alt>b']" gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.wm.keybindings maximize "['<Super>Up']" gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.wm.keybindings unmaximize "['<Super>Down']" gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.wm.preferences focus-mode sloppy --------------- 8< ---------------- But after restarting compiz, it changes the settings to: --------------- 8< ---------------- $ gsettings get org.gnome.desktop.wm.preferences
compiz (Ubuntu)
High / Fix Released
yeah for 12.10 basically
we can backport it to 12.10? i thought that wasn't easily done.
Is Sam S still maintaining compiz ... ? I thought there was some-sort of bust-up and he walked away from compiz.
he works on compiz still
he just doesn't work for Canonical anymore
he's focusing on school now iirc
14:08
thats good to know. cheers.

1 hour later…
15:24
whoa...empty chat room
lol --> 1 hour later...
appears
@jokerdino They do it :P
@AmithKK do what?
Backporting
hm, we need to fix lots of bugs before that.
16:05
@jokerdino - did you ever shove the lens-toggling parts into your tool
or is the concensus - it's going to be a stock feature that gets exposed in a later release anyway
nope. it was a no go if we are going for a place in repo.
ah. what made that a no-go
@AbrahamVanHelpsing i think they might after the unity qt rewrite.
@AbrahamVanHelpsing potential to break the unity install.
that's fair. there was some talk about it on one of the mailing lists. to be fair, it was an ugly hack
yeah, i had a chat with one of the unity dev and he wasn't particularly interested in having it in.
maybe after a gsetting key or something, i was told.
16:10
yep. an alternate solution is too forcibly deregister the dbus provider and shim in a black hole lens that just swallows queries and returns empty set. i was looking at doing that, but renaming stuff was way simpler
hm, that could work.
there is a need for sudo access though?
I'm not sure on forcibly unloading lens dbus providers. You don't need root to register a session dbus provider.
we are probably quite a long way from implementing it.
but, i'll keep your input in mind. adding it to trello board.
it was just an alternate path that doesn't require a structural change to unity
yeah, i understood that. but we are low on manpower. as in, the only real dev is kinda too busy.
16:47
How do I make a QR code look cool on a shirt?
not wear it.
Neon green instead of white, and label it scan at the peril of resetting your device to factory settings.
@AmithKK QR code to your website? not a bad idea.
Write "QR codes are cool" above it, and hope that you only meet gullible people
I've seen some T-shirts with QR codes on, but they never scan correctly
is it just me or was there almost no spam yesterday?
didn't see any last night
16:50
@DanHulme Ok :Advice-Taken:
I should do something like
@AmithKK business cards with QR codes tend to work though
"Hey, I'm Amith :P"
if anyone is familiar with lua, there are easy points to be had on a vlc plug-in. it works right up to the file write. askubuntu.com/questions/267670/… at least with lua 5.0 and stock vlc. It's free rep if you're a lua guy
