Q: Why is my wifi super slow?

TheXDoesn't seem to matter what browser I am using, and it only seems to effect when I am browsing pages, as download speeds are fine... Also, this is a dual boot system and the internet works fine under Windows... Any ideas? Thanks

@TheX: See my comment.
@GeorgeEdison See my comment. :-D
02:05
@TheX: See my comment
:P
@JorgeCastro welcome
I added a momentus XT, which is a fast spinning disk with flash memory added for read speed
lmk or mail me. It's a real i3, no atom crap. :)
also hi @EvilPhoenix
holy
thats a decent deal at 350
02:35
I'll sell it to you too if you want. :)
cant undercut marco ;)
he gets dibs
after all, he helps me write crappy .net code when i'm beating my head on the desk :P
Anyone running natty here?
If so,can you please check if 127.0.0.1:9091 works,while transmission is open
02:58
@JorgeCastro That looks like a great buy - you've got me sold! I'll find you tomorrow on IM to hash out the details early birthday gift
@lazyPower They're still on back order. Kind of tired of waiting - can never have too many computers though :)
true that
@MarcoCeppi sounds good, I should sell it for more, but I'd rather send it to a good home
@GeorgeEdison that was awesome
@TheX I know - there are some good ones there.
This one's pretty funny too:
@GeorgeEdison that is how I feel at work...
03:06
@TheX Really?
03:17
same here... why corp. america loves meetings I'll never know
@MarcoCeppi funny thing about today is, we are STILL down. so far the total lost revenue is about 2 thousand and counting.
03:38
hi roland
03:52
Try visiting a page and pasting this in the address bar:

2 hours later…
05:39
@lazyPower @GeorgeEdison @RolandTaylor @MarcoCeppi @JorgeCastro @StefanoPalazzo good morning! @Alvar @Allan

2 hours later…
07:19
Good morning :)
07:43
Good Morning
Morning @Achu
@Takkat did you try installing mac os on virutalbox?
@Achu nope, but there are reports it works
bit tricky ;)
@Takkat I never use Mac os before and i don't know what it like
I wold like to know how it works
@Achu if you never used it you maybe won't need it :P
07:46
@Takkat haha...
i wold like to check how it works
you know as a student
in fact i think it will be rather slow in a VM as compared to Mac Hardware
I know only Ubuntu since i start using computer
5
:) that's a good starting point :)
I know i'm lucky
so
how can i test Mac?
hold on I i get it for you
07:51
ok
08:03
As from licence Virtual Box running OSX is only designed on Mac Hardware but there are ways to overcome this - see this topic on Virtual Box Forum. I never tried this Empire thing myself
@Takkat Thanks I will check that
@Achu depending on where you live your OSX licence may only allow this on Mac hardware.l
How can they charge 9.99 for uplink?
08:25
@Allan @Takkat hello :)
Hi @KaustubhP @Allan
You could also buy a 2nd hand mac
Hi @KaustubhP @Takkat @Alvar
Hi @All. ((iphone))
@Takkat So would you pay 9.99 for uplink Darwinia definatly but Uplink 0.o
08:37
Hu?
@Allan is that a game?
@Takkat there the two new payed for games in the Software centre
@Alvar I can't afford it, and i don't want to use mac I'm conformable using Ubuntu i just want to know how it is like. Thats all.
Aha.. That's a tricky one
hmmm, did Computer Janitor last night and it removed some stuff that was in use ...
08:43
@Achu Then take a look at an apple store - after this whole iPad 1.8 craze is over. lol
IPad 2 *
Good idea go to a real apple store and take a look at an imac
can someone remind me of the name of the dock that got deleted?
Window shopping...
@Greg I always use apt-get autoremove
begins with T, talkia or something
08:46
@Allan my limit to pay for a game was €19,99 only if it was any good ;)
ahhh, Talika
its functionality resembles the Win7 taskbar
Win is a bad joke gone too far
@Greg yep and shows window previews bit like dockbarx
@OctavianDamiean Morning
08:48
Morning :)
@Allan as I don't have it installed, are there any other docks I should try that you recommend?
@Greg brb breakfast
Brb have to get out of the bed..
@Greg of course, just take a default gnome panel and make it a pseudo-dock :)
@OctavianDamiean morning
08:54
have you guys seen the new Ubuntu mug? I have to get one
I would like to see task grouping, and the launcher icon act as the running icon at the same time
@OctavianDamiean I know, right? That and this tshirt - shop.canonical.com/product_info.php?products_id=286 - not sure mom would approve though lol
@JamesGifford lol hehe. Well I have the three new ones and a nice Ubuntu cap :)
@OctavianDamiean sweet. :)
my laptop is 64bit intel CPU, and for a download choice I have AMDx64 or i386 - which one should I choose?
09:01
@Greg go for 64-bit (Am64)
cool thanks
@Greg is back
@Greg if you want to mod your gnome panel to the max I usually replace the menu's with Cardapio menu in combination with talika it makes a very minimal interface
@Greg You could also replace talika with docky but in my opinion it's kind of pointless as you still have the gnome panel hang around hardly being used just taking up space.
@Greg finally you can bling out with a full on awn dock no gnome panel krib I replace the loss of alt+f2 with synapse. I wont talk about cairo dock as you have to be five years old to appreciate it ;)
09:24
hah thanks a lot
@Allan hey that Cardapio looks sweet
Oli
Oli
Just have one panel at the bottom with Cardapio. Does what I want without getting in the way.
Only criticism: It could theme a little better.
@Oli at least it follows the gnome theme but soon everything will be going to 3 or unity so I'm not sure what will happen to it.
Kind of interested about how people will hack unity and gnome 3
@StefanoPalazzo unity-askubuntu-daemon is being ornery again with this mornings updates - i.imgur.com/ZENkS.jpg - I'll grab what happens when I run from a terminal in a few.
10:12
@Allan talika and cardapio is a perfect setup on a single panel
really impressed :)
blerhg. chromify-OSD isn't working.... Methinks something changed in the Chrome Unstable branch. (Imagine that!)
10:28
@JamesGifford interested in chromify-osd
@Greg It's a neat plugin. I use it a lot.
@JamesGifford I'm a JavaScript developer on Linux ... does chromify take control of window.webkitNotifications.createNotification() ?
if so, I need to get this because a lot of my applications use webkit notifications
@Greg Honestly, I have no idea. I think that's what it does. (@MarcoCeppi wrote the thing, he knows more than I do)
he better wake up then :)
@MarcoCeppi when you're here drop me a message, your extension looks cool.
@Greg it's all webkit based. this chatroom uses it for @Mentions, and gmail uses it as well.
@Greg You can install it from the ChromeStore. - chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/…
10:31
aha if this chatroom works with chromify-osd then that's what it'll be doing :)
loves developing UI stuff :D
probably the most entertaining part of my job :P
"requires access to all files on your computer and all websites you visit"
hmmm, it always makes me weary when they say that :D
@Greg don't worry Marco doesn't need your files ;)
hmm, got a standard webkit notification for that ... let me restart chrome
@Greg Same here.
10:33
there we go, anyone care to mention me?
aha, works nice now :D
very impressed
Can someone mention me? Testing the new install.
@JamesGifford mentioned.
@Greg Wahoo! It wurks now. :D
its a really great extension ... I actually didn't know extensions could modify anything outside of the browser ...
so its possible to write an extension that uploads your files for backup (or for malicious use)?
@Greg In theory yes. But it'd have to get past the Google screening process. And to be blunt, Google's taking the screening with Chrome much more seriously than with Android. (Just putting it out there).
10:37
ah good, I didn't know they screened them. Very promising indeed.
@Greg well also depends on which files I guess
The last time I played with extensions, they were merely mini websites that could pop-up in the toolbar or run a JavaScript in the background, with a few exposed APIs
this is amazing ... I'm ridiculously happy without any real reason :D
Just discovered a ChromeApp I built a few weeks ago....
@JamesGifford App?
10:44
@Greg Google likes to call them apps. It's really just a fancy bookmark.
ah that's what I thought
can't understand it
It's a bookmark to a webapp.
and I don't understand either.
:)
I love ridiculously large bookmarks hehe
@OctavianDamiean ah I have that as a traditional (syncable) bookmark
@OctavianDamiean Nice work! I didn't know it was you who did that.
10:49
I'm planing to extend its functionality. Will have to talk to Joey bout that
@Greg apps are syncable too
@JamesGifford thanks :)
@OctavianDamiean oh ...
when I install a chrome "app" my new tab page gets cluttered
I like being able to see the 8 websites
apps add a little 'drawer' thing to choose between apps or most visited
I generally only let it show the apps
I don't need the rest
Perfectly good reason to not install apps. I rarely do. I prefer to have my top 8 sites. one of them is askubuntu, the other is OMGUbuntu. ;)
and I have SO and SE chats pinned
ew it should be possible to create a nice AskUbuntu app
10:53
Made a notacious chromebookmark.
yea well bookmarks are really easy I#m currently looking for some extra functionality like new questions, and so on
just not sure what is possible and what not, have to check that out
@OctavianDamiean You've also got to take the SE API into account.
it might not be ready
yea well I know two guys which should be able to help me a bit in terms of what is possible and what not, @StefanoPalazzo and @GeorgeEdison :)
hmm the currently available AskUbuntu bookmark app is violating the UI guidelines
11:01
The bookmark or the extension?
(I know you said bookmark, just clarifying)
ok. just curious
it is too big, no padding
I'm a pedant
:p
I'm not seeing where there are UI guidelines.... :p
oh there are
11:05
Link?
Oh yeah.... now I'm seeing it. I didn't think of that as a "UI guidelines" per se.
well if you are as pedantic as I am then they are like constants
:D
11:12
lts.cr/U-N - the dash isn't realizing that Chrome has a different icon... seems to be looking at the cache from about 3-4 reboots ago. Odd.
11:22
oh hello @Chipaca you've found the chat? :)
@Octavian say what?
@Chipaca oh you were in the chat before. Well then you are not new to the chat. I haven't seen you in here before thats all. I thought you've just found your way to the chat. :)
how do I find my current screen resolution?
@OctavianDamiean yes, been here before, quite a lot in fact, but it's one of the first things I drop if my life gets overloaded.
@Chipaca understandable ... I did the same with the StackOverflow chat a while back
11:30
@Greg are you in Unity, or in classic gnome?
@Chipaca gnome
@Greg the Monitors (under preferences, or was it system settings?) will tell you
thanks
I need help...

Q: How do I pin and setup domain emails with Gmail?

AlvarI have a domain name and I want to use it as an email address. I have a server and is currently hosting alvarberglind.se. I want to have an email called "[email protected]" and I want it to show up in my current gmail account. So I can choose if I want to send a mail from my new email adre...

11:51
@Alvar how is that ubuntu related?
12:01
@Greg If you read the plugin description it says why the warning tells you about access to all your files. :) It doesn't actually read any files on your computer - and the source for the entire plugin is on LP
@MarcoCeppi I'm using it now, very impressed!
Glad you like it! There will be another update this weekend which makes it a bit faster and more stable
@Chipaca it's not but the other forum is dead....
12:27
@Alvar a stackexchange site is not a forum!
@OctavianDamiean sorry I meant chat...
@OctavianDamiean my dad was disturbing me....
I can't edit/delete now...
I think you have only 120 seconds or something like that
that sucks really...
well it is ok the way it is now
right...
But still the webapps sites chat is dead.. the ubuntu is the only one with people in it #Fail
12:31
@Alvar well there are other chat rooms with active people too and you can't always have people chatting as some of them have to work too ;)
@OctavianDamiean work is overrated really! ;)
@Alvar We're lucky that Ubuntu already has a large pool of users from all over the world. Most of the other SE sites were started form scratch - like WebApps. So active chat user base is considerably smaller compared to this room
and your question will get attention just not momentarily
I hope so...
well have you ever done something like this?
@Alvar well it gets me food on the table so no it is not overrated :D
12:33
@OctavianDamiean tsss
@Alvar nope, hence me not answering it ;)
@Alvar Have you tried following the directions: google.com/a/cpanel/domain/new
done that!
have allready and email [email protected]
@Alvar Then what is the problem?
but I can only send mails not recive, I need help adding the url:s posted in the end of that tutorial..
crystone isn't in the google list
12:35
So you need to make MX and CNAME changes to your DNS registrar
yes
The best way to do that is email whoever has the DNS servers for your doamin
But I don't know how to?
crystone.com
When I worked for a webhosting company users couldn't change this without contact support first
aha
well I can
there is no mx post at the moment..
12:36
create one :)
Just say you are setting up Goole Apps - copy the DNS changes in an email, send it to them and wait :)
I will give you a pic...
@MarcoCeppi "sir yes sir"
hmm interesting, is this google apps thingy free?
yes
It's awesome! :D
I can have 50 emails! :D
then it costs
Oli
Oli
I wish that you could export PSDs straight to HTML+CSS using magic filters and SVG so the browser does all the rasterising so I wouldn't have to.
12:37
So for a small company it's free..
@Oli hehe I guess many have the same wish :D
If only Photoshop was open source whistles
meh Gimp for the win
@MarcoCeppi that lsit could be much longer
if only everything was open source! :D
@OctavianDamiean Basically you can have Google docs, calendar, emails, etc that you get with your gmail domain but for just your domain. So it's like your own little private Google Apps island
12:41
@MarcoCeppi nods just read it up. Good stuff.
I'm using Google Apps for my domains - it's neat stuff. Fairly easy to setup as well. (After you change the DNS records that is)
good for u...
this is how it looks when I try to add a new mx
haya @JamesGifford :)
@Alvar email your hosting provider - they'll be able to do it.
oh hey @StefanoPalazzo
I marked your bug as "incomplete", are you up for helping me figure out what's going on? (should only take 10 minutes)
12:50
@StefanoPalazzo Yup.
@JamesGifford great... just have to find out what to tell them...
@JamesGifford okay nice :-) So mh. I'm not on natty at the moment lol, i've no idea where the files are
try this: find /usr | grep unity-askubuntu-daemon
it's looking..
/usr/lib/unity-place-askubuntu/unity-askubuntu-daemon
right, now run this program with python /usr/lib/unity-place-askubuntu/unity-askubuntu-daemon
and put the entire output (presumably it quits quite soon) into paste.ubuntu.com
In case the error you see says something about another instance already running, try "killall unity-askubuntu-daemon" first
no error about another instance running.
12:56
that's what I expected, thank you
@JamesGifford you can put that into your bug report, either editing it or adding a comment
You're welcome. I'll append the pastebin to the bug.
just took the words out of my mouth. lol
@JamesGifford paste it directly
some people like to follow bug reports via email (: makes it easier for them
@StefanoPalazzo I'm one of those.
All done
excellent, thanks. Now, since it's not a bug in my program I'll just need to figure out what to do with this bug ;-)
not to worry though, I already know what's wrong
If only you could transfer bugs between projects on LP like you can questions on SE.
13:01
Smash the bug!
@JamesGifford You can - if I know what you're talking about
@TheX Hulk.... SMASH
@MarcoCeppi Ohh. I just discovered that little button there. launchpad is amazing.
yeah you can
Ugh, internet here can be so slow at the office
13:05
for some reason, my downloads in chrome are always finished "in NaN minutes"
@StefanoPalazzo yours too? stable, beta or unstable?
Maybe maths is all wrong. I better watch the new york journal of mathematics in the next few months
:P
@JamesGifford dev
So it's a platform issue then. (I'm in Stable ATM)
well, I can't be bothered fixing it. Just booted up 10.10 until my latest natty install is done
yay @StefanoPalazzo
i had a go with natty lastnight
WOW
13:09
ikr :-)
What were your impressions of natty, right after "WOW"?
Natty......
and what impresses me more, is that software center starts up in under a minute. huge improvement over whats in 10.10, unity is going to be sexy as all get out, <insert grocery list of praise>
hehehe. Compiz go haywire on you at all?
i spent about 2 hours with it.
yeah, but i also set it to not warn me on crashes after the third
13:10
I already bang my mouse against the left side of the screen all the time, even on 10.10 (:
2
other than hte odd unity refresh (compiz crash) it was rather speedy
@StefanoPalazzo yea me too :D
@StefanoPalazzo Hence why I run 10.10 netbook - I haz unity (Of sorts)
especially for being run from a USB stick
honestly though, i think i'm still going to be a hardcore do user vs unity.
I'm more of a <super><space> kinda guy than a mouser
doesn't unity do everything Do does by now?
13:12
it may
not everything. and unity's got a crapload of shortcuts.
i'm just unaware
Pretty sure one of the guys in charge of Unity is the former gnome Do maintainer (or some title like that)
@StefanoPalazzo Just put a docky there least it wont be so much of a shock when nothing happens
13:14
@StefanoPalazzo Didn't they head hunt all of the dock people before starting 11.04
@StefanoPalazzo AWN, docky (do), Cairo etc.
@StefanoPalazzo that's the guy. (I think). If not, we're hearing all the same rumors (Or whatever)
Not sure; it wouldn'tve been the worst idea
"wouldn'tve"? (you can say it, but can you write it?)
to english.se!
I'm holding out for Beta 1 - I said I was going to wait for April 28th but I don't think I can.
@Allan gnome do is alive and well by the way, so the hire should have been a good deal for everyone it seems
@StefanoPalazzo you scratch my back.......
Not literally 0.o
13:20
@MarcoCeppi As long as you don't mind compiz going berserk every now and again, it's actually pretty nice.
Looking forward to beta one. More users → more bug reports
speech to text using floss software on ubuntu
0
A: Speech to Text - Dragon Speaking software alternative

AlaukikYou can install Chromium dev version from the ppa ppa:chromium-daily/ppa (How to add an PPA) and add --enable-speech-input to the end of the launcher. Now visit this website and whoo! text to speech on ubuntu using html5.

but yeah, stability is pretty good this early in the cycle. Apart from compiz crashes, and the few rather experimental bits, it's pretty awesome
Well with any unstable software I expect there to be issues
Huh. A gold star to the person who rips speech-to-text out of chrome
13:23
@MarcoCeppi probably the most important part is to come if Unity crashes on every ones system there will be a lot of Ubuntu users who will be pissed off and go a bit green....
And there are - on A1 I got locked out. Couldn't login with GNOME, KDE or a recovery console. Wouldn't except the correct password.
and puts it into atk :D (omg that would rock much)
ono wait, speech-to-text probably happens on google's servers, I remember something like that
Oli
Oli
Cripes. Just seen the pricing on the new Nvidia GTX 590 cards.
Nigh on £600
And they advertise a Quad-SLI setup as a good thing.
@StefanoPalazzo Hangon. I'll test it offline real fast.
@Oli maybe we're going to get sha1 collisions soon (:
13:28
@Oli if you like frying eggs with a very expensive cooker thats really good at 3D graphics
Oli
Oli
@Alaukik I edited it where you had said "text to speech" instead of speech to text
@Oli Thanks!
@StefanoPalazzo got a quick python question for you
@StefanoPalazzo What is the max number of items you can have in a list
13:36
@Allan it's sys.maxint, that architecture dependant.
Can anyone tell me how to remove http, www and the subdomain from a URL?
@KaustubhP In what language?
@Allan sys.maxint is 2**a/2-1 where a is either 32 or 64
I should only end up with DOMAIN.TLD
@MarcoCeppi Java or scala. Preferably scala.
backs away from the conversation, slowly
13:38
@MarcoCeppi :p
@StefanoPalazzo I'm doing a list of strings around 250 to 300 doable on 32bit?
@Allan oh yeah, sure. Depending on what you want to do with it, it may make sense to look at other data structures, like a tree based structure.
@KaustubhP what Supercalafragalisticexpialadotious (no I will not check the spelling)
@Allan I am trying to learn a new language.
But I hate data collation.
Too much to compare. Too many if loops. Too much data stripping. continued
@Allan maybe, depending on your application, you want to take a look at blists, they have insertion and removal in O(log n), a list is O(n), but for 300 items it really shouldn't matter that much. I regularly use lists with tens of thousands of strings
~$ python -m timeit -s "list('hello world' for i in range(10000))"
10000000 loops, best of 3: 0.0209 usec per loop
~$ python -m timeit -s "list('hello world' for i in range(100000))"
100000000 loops, best of 3: 0.0211 usec per loop
most of that time is spend building the range() I'm sure
13:46
@StefanoPalazzo just need to find a way to parse a text file to a list
@Allan how does the text file look?
dictionary = list(i.strip() for i in open("/usr/share/dict/british-english").readlines() if i.strip())
this only takes a few milliseconds (for a bit less than 100k lines)
Just for work trying to get a bit of python learning in the back door
@StefanoPalazzo 0.o
