maybe I can work out a deal with them, I'll just automatically install their "yahoo toolbar" with every copy of the program, lol :P
and Bonzi Buddy, while I'm at it (:
@StefanoPalazzo ANYTHING BUT THAT!!!!!!
That for Google?
Now I see what's happening here :)
no that's yahoo
If I were in marketing, I'd say "yahoo is 6¼ times cheaper than google"
So is Bing going to charge us?
00:05
Still no idea, they don't publish anything of the sort. They just tell you to "get started", worry about pricing later
Helpful.
One of these days, I'll write a search engine. Put it on EC2, and then I don't have to worry about all this (:
Ya, the 'Ubuntu' search engine - it'll be awesome.
Once it takes off, Canonical can manage it... and profit!
hehe
'how hard can it be?' :-)
Well, it's simple - just a full text search! :P
00:16
so what will you call it? something fresh & imaginative like altavista?
I'll probably call the same as 90% of my software, "test.py"
Just use wget -l 10000 http://ubuntu.com
...and wait.
Lol!
Spam is getting smarter... sorta:

hehe!
that's so sweet
That's the funniest thing I've read in a while.
StackApps.com - the new Matchmaking Site on the Web!

Good morning to all

What to do with tag ? I'd at least suggest synonym to but my answer score lets me not suggest it.
@Takkat Post a synonym request on Meta, or ask one of the mods here to do it
0
A: Tag synonym suggestions

Takkatfolder needs synonym directory . This needs inclusion of folders and directories.

morning @OctavianDamiean

HA! In your face you goddamn bug in your face! HAHA!
just killed my biggest enemy for the last seven days \o/
Pardon?
:D bet was only a tiny little typo ;)
@Takkat nope it was really a bug which I can't explain right now. I'll have to contact the Google guys working on Android to find out why that component behaves like that
@userunknown sorry was an outburst of emotions :D
@OctavianDamiean oh then it's really a giant leap. My congrats :)
@Takkat thanks :)
now I have to fix up all the stuff which I broke while trying to fix that bug :p
09:46
@OctavianDamiean ;)
Hi folks! :)
Hi @Alvar
I've noticed that I've got a new answer on my microphone qestion!
This chat is actiually quite good on my IPhone
I was just thinking
Can my akg k530 headphones ve damaged if i use it as an microphone?

Apologies, if I upsetted anyone. I'm so sorry!
@userunknown oh no, noone gets upset here
No, no - now I'm in the sandbox. :) I'm gone.
10:13
@userunknown but do come back :)
@Takkat: I have much more fun in Sandbox. I guess I'll stay there.
lol

I wish SO Inc would support the XMPP/IRC bridges for chat so Firefox and Chromium didn't take it upon themselves to eat all my RAM
@Oli: To view this chats in gaijm, xchat, ...? It's not possible?
@userunknown nope :(
Oli
Oli
10:25
@userunknown That's the idea. There are some projects that try to do this for both IRC and XMPP/Jabber but they're very hacky and basically involve you running your own server and a "bridge" to connect the web-only SE Chat to your local instance. Ideally SO Inc would just run a XMPP server that interfaces directly with Chat.
But do those programs support images? Ah, they would just show the url.
Oli
Oli
@userunknown The XMPP variant could probably do both but even if they didn't, for me, just getting a chat application out of a browser would be a good start

@JorgeCastro yeah it does. I'll just have to wait and make my edits a little more thorough next time. I wish I could find out which edits were rejected though. That would help me a LOT.
@JamesGifford I've no idea which ones they were, I told you about the only one I rejected - but I'm sure we have an editing guide somewhere, maybe it was a simple mistake
0
A: How do I build Unity from source?

RichardThanks for putting up the guide But what about the instructions given in the INSTALL file in the source. Should we follow those additional steps. It does mention that it is derived from this tutorial. What should I do? Also all the of instructions (in the INSTALL file) do not seem to work (on my...

@JamesGifford I should be able to tell which were rejected
^- should be a question

Q: Editing tips and tricks

Jorge CastroIn the beginning there weren't that many high rep users who could edit questions. As that number grows I thought I would add some tips/tricks that I use for those of you striving to earn a badge improve the quality of the site.

12:50
@MarcoCeppi Just saying it doesn't make any sense for the person making the edits to not know what edits where rejected. Wonder if the SE guys made that decision consciously or not.
@StefanoPalazzo Bookmarked. Thanks.
@JamesGifford The SE guys are ALWAYS pushing changes though. It may just be something not implemented yet. They kind of push a "half-assed" idea, get feedback, tune, feedback, tune, feedback, then before you know it there's this whole new section of the site!
@JamesGifford It's a good point, but it would require those guys to give a reason, making rejecting edits a pain, thus lowering the quality of the accepted edits (just a guess, thinking out loud)
@MarcoCeppi you make it sound like a google project - in beta for the next 8 bajillion years! But that makes sense. * is a newb to SE stuff *
Well editing review was only available to moderators for a while. Then we gave them feedback and it was available to 10k users, they gave feedback, then lower and lower down the reputation row
@StefanoPalazzo yeah, that makes some sense. Something else is, the load on the moderators would be higher.
@MarcoCeppi constantly tweaking. :)
12:54
They certainly are - better than waiting forever polishing a product and the community going "WHAT! NOOOOOO! BOOOOO!"
@JamesGifford Not sure, but I'd guess a whole bunch of them are approved or rejected by 2k+ users
@MarcoCeppi yea well that is developing by tracers, someone of the SE team certainly read The pragmatic programmer
hey, uhm. can I get you three to help me with something?
@StefanoPalazzo is you three towards me too?
@StefanoPalazzo Depends on if I know how to do that. Go ahead.
12:57
if so, sup?
yep
I have this algorithm which is kind of hard to test. So, I'll post a question here, and you tell me how important this question is to you, at the minute
like "I don't care about this question at all" to "I'm constantly refreshing that page"
3
Q: Change the hide button for gnome-panel?

JohnIs there a way to change the hide button on the gnome-panel? What I mean is the buttons placed at the end of each side of the panel? I'm wondering if its possible, and if it is, how to go about doing it. Panel hidden, button showing Panel not hidden, buttons on each side

11
Q: How do I make a program auto-start everytime I log in?

Marco CeppiI frequently need to start several programs that I use everytime I start my computer - How can I make it so that whenever I login the program is automatically launched?

What? I'm so confused right now
I second that
13:02
@MarcoCeppi is that last question one you're even remotely interested in?
Well I already know how to do it - I did it to curb the questions like "how do I get X to run on startup?"
I see, well it's good that I found that out. Back to the drawing board :D
you want me to answer that too?
@OctavianDamiean I'm having a bit of trouble seeing why my algorithm came up with this one for you
Highly voted question, that I asked
makes sense
13:06
@MarcoCeppi but you wouldn't want it to show on your Dash for the next three days, right?
@StefanoPalazzo I wouldn't want any questions showing in my dash :)
(oh yeah, that ↑ is the point of this exercise by the way)
@StefanoPalazzo what question is that one?
@OctavianDamiean "Q: Change the hide button for gnome-panel?"
@StefanoPalazzo oh right :)
13:08
Okay, it's not very scientific but I think that tells me that reputations isn't as good an indicator of 'interestingness' as I thought
@StefanoPalazzo Oh it is ;)
I think page views is probably the best indicator
yeah but it would have to be page views by you
13:22
Page views, plus activity?
@JamesGifford as if by sheer coincidence, there's a new blog post talking about tags and tag-wikis
@StefanoPalazzo Just caught that. Bookmarked as well.
@JamesGifford They're always working on the platform :)
at this rate, I'm going to have a bookmarks folder just for editing. and another for answers.
@MarcoCeppi Means it'll never (really) go stale. :)
@JamesGifford hopefully not
13:32
wow, and i thought one letter edits are discouraged :)
but atleast got some home-page time
14:00
@KaustubhP @StefanoPalazzo @MarcoCeppi @JorgeCastro @OctavianDamiean Morning fellas :)
@lazyPower morning
@lazyPower morning :)
Oli
Oli
Python has broken my ability to write JS array code
@Oli []?
Oli
Oli
@YiJiang It's the disparity between Python's fairly logical approach to "in" and removing elements
I'm okay with the basic syntax
14:04
@Oli indexOf + splice?
Oli
Oli
Most notably I'm trying to do "if key is not in array"
Logically speaking that should be if (! key in array) but it explodes with an undefined
Hang on, did you say key? You're looking at objects or arrays?
Oli
Oli
if (key in array) works fine, it's just reversing it
shouldn't it be "if !(key in array)"?
@Oli if you use an array-like Object in JavaScript, you can use key in array syntax
14:06
logically I mean
Eh, in shouldn't be used with Arrays, rather Objects.
Oli
Oli
@StefanoPalazzo Perhaps... I thought all conditions (including reversals) needed to be within the parenthesis. I'll try
@YiJiang Yeah it's an Object
Array.indexOf can be used to check if a certain value exists in an array
@Oli well otherwise you're saying "if the opposite of this key is in array"
presumably, you can't NOT a string
I'm hoping someone here can help, but I'm trying to set up an old(er) supermicro box with 4 hardware raided 500GB drives. When installing, it asks if I want to "Activate Serial ATA RAID devices".
Oli
Oli
14:08
@StefanoPalazzo I tried !(..) (syntax error) and (!(..)) (same undefined)
huh that is some weird syntax then o.o
Well, if you want to support only the latest browsers, obj.keys.indexOf(something) !== -1 will work with no parenthesis
The last two times I tried the install, I answered "Yes" and then got the "error: no such device: <GUID> grub rescue>" message at boot.
Any suggestions? Google is of little help as most people with this problem seem to be running multiple OSes.
Oli
Oli
@YiJiang Need IE6 support on this, I'm afraid
>>> var obj = {a: 'b', c: 'd'}; !('a' in obj);
false
I don't really see what's wrong here
14:10
what type does (key in array) evaluate to?
Oli
Oli
Oooh, the batty appears to be working with (!(..))
wehey, the big freaking button has a new icon! looks very nice
Oli
Oli
@StefanoPalazzo In will always return boolean
@Oli How to use in in JavaScript: jsfiddle.net/g105b/QpncM
that makes no sense at all, if it evaluates to a boolean, you should be able to !x it
Oli
Oli
14:12
@StefanoPalazzo Well it works now I wrapped the in clause in brackets... I think you were right initially and it was trying to not the key
I see, it's just a bit picky.
Oli
Oli
I know I said it didn't but that was just testing it in firebug... Which is pretty buggy at the moment in FF4.
not only the bfb
oh! gotta log out
woah, progress works now
which application are you testing?
14:16
a sec
Oli
Oli
Unity users: can you verify a suggested edit for me please? askubuntu.com/review/suggested-edits
Not being a Unity user is starting to impact my ability answer questions accurately :(
@Oli this is Natty?
Oli
Oli
@StefanoPalazzo I assumed so
@Oli can you link to the question pls?
Oli
Oli
But that doesn't mean it is, good point.
14:18
@Oli Might be better to link to the actual suggested edit instead of the suggested edit review page, which only 10k users can see
can't access that page ;)

A: How do I restart Unity

OliI don't use Unity but given what I know of its mechanics, this may work: unity --replace You'll want to stick that in a run box (alt+f2) rather than a terminal or it'll break when you exit the terminal.

The suggested edit is suggesting unity --replace instead of compiz --replace
@Oli It's correct, but "setsid unity" would be even better. It shows you error messages in the terminal, but doesn't quit unity when you close the terminal
best of both
@Oli both work
it's like "unity &; ^Z; bg; disown -a"
14:20
--replace -> Run unity /!\ This is for compatibility with other desktop
interfaces and acts the same as running unity without
--replace
Oli
Oli
@htorque interesting but I guess that sort of makes sense
@htorque check this out, it's beautiful! paste.ubuntu.com/584848
not the code of course, but what it does - though I also like the code :P
so running unity is the same as running unity --replace and compiz --replace
as i thought - sucks with a 32px launcher ;)
@Oli unity will do fine, the --replace is there just for convention
14:26
+1
Also, the launcher doesn't take the keyboard focus anymore, if you move the mouse to the left by mistake
slide out is the default now too
@StefanoPalazzo your dash get icon thing we needed is fixed
@JorgeCastro sorry?
to get http icons for your place
that we were talking about yesterday?
with a full launcher, navigating through the items with the keyboard feels a bit choppy
I apologise, still don't know what you're talking about @jorge :)
14:35
@StefanoPalazzo you aware that when you enter the exact word (including case) of a AU tag in the AU lens, it doesn't find that tag?
@JamesGifford that's using google at the moment. Can you give me a test-case that fails? (I know "unity" fails sometimes, if you don't capitalise it)
@StefanoPalazzo unity, bash (And that's the exact word, including case). I haven't found any others yet.
@StefanoPalazzo remember you were talking to neil about having unity do the hard work for fetching pics from the internet?
right
so you're saying I can now give it a URI for an icon? o.O
The size of the LauncherAPI progress bar exceeds the available space if your launcher is set to 32px. Screenshot: http://i.imgur.com/e1Vxf.png
unity
Undecided / New
@StefanoPalazzo forgot to test - how does it look at max launcher size? probably doesn't scale at all (likely the same goes for the numbers/counters)
14:46
yeah that would make sense
@htorque you're right it doesn't (allthough it looks very nice on a 64px launcher)
here's another one
This probably isn't a 'typical' use case, however, the Launcher icon property 'count' introduces a break for numbers > 9,999. Screenshot: http://i.imgur.com/7jcRu.png
unity
Undecided / New
@StefanoPalazzo Affects a new feature for stackapplet (Or something like that)?
@JamesGifford No, I was just using the stackapplet launcher as an example
firefox doesn't have a progressbar either, just a little code-magic :-)
@StefanoPalazzo ok. :)
Oli
Oli
14:57
@fluteflute Congratulations on 10k
@StefanoPalazzo Reputation should probably be abbreviated to 10k, etc
@MarcoCeppi yeah indeed. The launcher api expects an integer though
Making it accept a string would solve the problem, better yet, a "tiny numbers algorithm" could be built in
like, 100, 1k, 100k, 1M, 100M, 1B and so on, maximum 4 characters for any number
Oli
Oli
It'll get more static the more you climb. It would be nice if there's space for 6 characters to squeeze on a decimal
very good point, 13k would be pretty useless
Oli
Oli
It'll still hit that issue, just later on
15:02
@StefanoPalazzo 13.3k
I love working through rolling blackouts on our web-server
Oli
Oli
@lazyPower Blackouts?! Ouch.
@lazyPower Redundant power plz?
@MarcoCeppi I've discovered the icing on the cake for why I hate working with MS technologies. Our win 2k8 server is stuck in rolling reboot mode for updates. which means our web-presence, our email and SQL server are all going down... and the company in their efforts to save money put our staging server on the same as our production server so it halts my progress every 15 minutes when the SQL server poops out
our code is so database dependent, theres no "single line" i can comment out to stop pulling that data, everything, the site theme, the article data, the menu structure, all database driven.
sighs
Oli
Oli
@lazyPower The update method isn't great but it's not unique to Windows. The way to stop that is to wump in a few more nodes and cluster so you can update one node at a time
15:05
@Oli oh i know, but thats beyond their budget scope
Oli
Oli
Sure
i'm working for a techno-illiterate upstart.
Oli
Oli
Do it at night =)
haha, that would be ideal. They pay hosting.com for this "unique" service.... i made reference to getting a rack and just doing it all in house, or even a rackspace account where we could do load balancing over three nodes, a staging, production, and failover
that went down the crap chute as usual
Should have them use Amazon cloud
pay by the hour :)
15:07
true, but i doubt it will happen
Oli
Oli
I'm still not sold on EC2. I don't like not knowing how much I'd be spending each month (even if it might be cheaper than a preallocated Linode block)
@MarcoCeppi The existing IT guy, my project lead, consulted them into thinking this was all they would need...ever... and they arent budging off that position, despite the owner and my direct supervisor complaining about the lack of web presence right now, and their "company wide emails" not going through....
Oli
Oli
Plus the allocation wizard-chants I've seen on various Planets scare the hell out of me.
its just amusing :)
@oli I'm a fan of Linode, so i can see why you would say linode block over Amazon
@Oli Using it with Rightscale you can get pretty accurate projections
We use Amazon at work, only reason I recommend it.
15:09
@MarcoCeppi is your hosting bill less than 2 grand a month? :P
Oli
Oli
@MarcoCeppi If you know how your existing traffic fits into a "computing unit"
The companies - yes. We have 10 micro servers that do all our processing, two web app servers, one Amazon RDS Database instance, one load balancer, and one private network setup
All less than 1k a month
Oli
Oli
In fairness my hosting bills are much smaller than most companies... It's just a couple of dozen smallish Django sites bubbling along at practically 0% CPU
Removed because, you know, it might be sensitive company information
@MarcoCeppi thats not bad man
Oli
Oli
15:12
@MarcoCeppi You split memcache off onto separate servers?
@Oli no - one is for testing at the moment
@MarcoCeppi thats what I would expect us to pay for a cluster per month if we hosted it in house and paid for the bandwidth, plus ran our own UPS solution.
comparable to that cost, so thats not bad. and amazon takes care of the server space... pretty slick.
@StefanoPalazzo DUDE THAT IS SICK LOOKING (The progress bar in unity)
We use their S3 as well. It's a pretty good solution if you're only going to need about 20 servers
@MarcoCeppi we would be using less than 5
@MarcoCeppi DB, web, email/sql, failover, staging
sorry, 5
I'll have a talk with my project lead about this tomorrow, it appears that the rolling updates have finally stopped crosses fingers
@JorgeCastro Oh wow, that is absolutely awesome. I'll get to work implementing gravatars, see if it's quick enough. Hooray!
15:20
@lazyPower If somehow the people holding the money do go this route I recommend Rightscale for managing it
and i spoke too fast, it went down again
sigh gotta love this
I'm half tempted ot call it a day and go home, Mirror the SQL data server and plug it into my own VM at home so i can work whenever
I seem to have broken something else, but gravatars work \o/
LOL! Why do I show up with "oh no!" ?
Oli
Oli
Why is it called a lens?
Now I can get your face on my desktop when ever I want :P
@MarcoCeppi you've got something link that in your user description
15:27
Ah!
@StefanoPalazzo great work man!
thanks :)
I should be able to push this feature soon. It's a little on the slow side
the new default wallpaper is awesome
:D
@htorque I honestly never liked that wallpaper. But each to their own.
I'll be brave, I'll commit.. fingers crossed

The continuation of the series "Oli wishes": I wish I had gone for a bigger SSD. When you have 120GB of storage running at ~540MB/s you're going to want to put too much stuff on it.
@StefanoPalazzo So we can now check it out from launchpad and it'll have gravatar?
It should be in the PPA soon (as in Minutes)
`Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on`
`/dev/sda1 54G 12G 40G 23% /`
i'm glad ubuntu doesn't need much space - otherwise i wouldn't have bought a 60gb ssd
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
aufs                  2.9G  1.3G  1.5G  46% /
;-)
16:03
@StefanoPalazzo how the heck are you doing that....?
crap
:D
I mean living on that small a drive
It's just a live usb disk :-)
how do you post code in here?
i've got a 64g ssd for 10.10, but haven't enjoyed its speed in days, as I'm constantly running natty from the usb disk
16:04
oh ok.
@htorque There's a fixed font button which will pop up when you enter a multi-line message
@htorque when you paste something with line-feeds, a new button "fixed font" should show up next to "upload"
Oli
Oli
@htorque Oh yeah Ubuntu is fine. I just find myself moving and symlinking too much stuff (eg Call of Duty Black Ops - 15 gigs straight off, my TinyXP virtualbox image - 20gigs, etc)
ah, four trailing spaces do the trick
Oli
Oli
16:04
I could probably move some completed games back to the RAID5
@YiJiang @StefanoPalazzo not with opera - best browser ever!
@Oli yeah, i stopped creating VMs on that disk - fills up the space pretty quickly
allright, to everybody running the AskUbuntu Lens, the new version is now available through an "apt-get upgrade", please let me know if it works, or if I've broken everybody's computers (:
Oli
Oli
@htorque But it's so fast :(
don't forget to run "sudo apt-get update" first.
Oli
Oli
Makes the difference between going and putting the kettle on for loading complex photoshop files
16:06
and remember to log out :-)
@htorque the answer to my drag handle question is in CCSM
what are we talking about? SSDs?
I want one so badly ...
they should stop manufacturing those stupid rotational drives :P
Oli
Oli
@OctavianDamiean Because I keep filling mine up.
@htorque Jason doesn't have time to do a detailed answer, so if you want to add detail that would be awesome
16:08
ye olde burma is the latest epicenter
@Oli buy more of em
Oli
Oli
@OctavianDamiean I'll run out of PCI-E slots after a while
Oli
Oli
But I'll run out of cash way before then
do you already have that many?
Oli
Oli
16:11
@OctavianDamiean 2, SATA one in a laptop and a PCI-E in this desktop
@Oli hehe :D
way to go
@JorgeCastro sure, right after dinner ;)
Oli
Oli
I think I've got five spare (unblocked) PCI-E slots so yeah I could wump a few more in
and go RAID0+0+0+0
@JorgeCastro \o/ enabling PNG plugin -> unity crash, enabling mt grabhandles plugin -> unity crash :D
@JamesGifford does it work for you?
It doesn't run here, until I manually start the daemon and kill unity :-( I may have done it again
16:17
@StefanoPalazzo Wahoo! It worked.
okay that's good :)
Hopeful as I am, I'll extrapolate from that, that it works for everybody except me (:
Gentlemen, as posed in this question here:
http://serverfault.com/questions/251294/configure-ape-server-on-ubuntu10-10-webserver
where can I find my dns configuration file so I can add the following lines:
ape IN A x.x.x.x ; The IP address of your APE server
*.ape IN CNAME ape
rock'n'roll :-)
16:22
It could be snappier, but I'm pretty sure I've done everything correctly, and it's as fast as it can be
@sadmicrowave I guess /etc/bind or something like that
i'm not noticing that it's particularly slow, but my computer is slower to start with.
@htorque report em!
old bug
fetching gravatars usually takes a second or so, which really, really bugs me, but there's nothing I can do about it
16:24
@OctavianDamiean, I don't have an /etc/bind - I have an /etc/bindresvport.blacklist - is that what you are talking about?
@sadmicrowave nope
well you have to set that on your DNS server I guess, generally on Linux you will use bind as your DNS server
what if I'm within a corporate network and my company IT group manages the DNS?
well the answer you got there should be pretty much all we can do
grrr...
if the DNS server is not maintained by you then you have to contact the maintainer
16:31
I gotcha
16:43
@StefanoPalazzo oh so you're not running natty from a VM?
@StefanoPalazzo I thought you were doing daily builds with VM... interesting.
@lazyPower that's done by the launchpad build-service using a recipe
@StefanoPalazzo no i didnt mean you were building them, i thought you were utilizing their daily builds in a VM.
No, I just have a USB stick that I upgrade, from time to time I create a fresh one
its about time for me to drop the hat and join the natty crowd in here on a usb stick. I feel like i'm missing out
for some reason, I wasn't shown the first screen of the installer today, it just booted. A usb stick is a good way to go. If you're not installing software (which is sloooow), it's very snappy and works pretty well
certainly faster than a VM :)
16:48
@lazyPower OR you can be a complete idiot like me and install it on a partition. ;)
reason I did that is because I've only got a USB 1 port on here - no USB 2. :(
daily iso, I say go for it ;-)
@JamesGifford hah :) that does pose a slow solution though
@StefanoPalazzo if i have time tonight i'll most certainly load that up on one of my desktop extensions
does natty still have that interesting bug where when using synergy, you cant go across the superbar? it effectively LOCKS the cursor on that screen?
It helps if you have plenty of ram by the way, anything > 3GBs and things will be very very smooth
ah, ok, so its not going to be awesome on my netbook then, it has ~ 1gig of ram
heh
it'll still work okay though
