@JorgeCastro @StefanoPalazzo Installed updates. Sadly, Unity's not loading correctly, so I can't give the lens a whirl. :(
@JamesGifford I know, I just rebooted too :)
@StefanoPalazzo Alright. So, next move? I logged in using Unity 2D - it showed up in the launcher, but the lens didn't load (Don't know if that's the intended behavior or not) :)
@James that's not intended. We've changed a lot of things today, and my development environment is totally broken, can't even boot.
@james I think you might just have to wait until tomorrows update :\
@StefanoPalazzo Ouch. That's not good. Did you try to use an older kernel for booting purposes? (Normally works for me)
@StefanoPalazzo And I can wait. Not like I'm going to be doing much anyway today into tomorrow.
@James no the kernel isn't broken, it's unity's packages. I'll try again in an hour or so. now,
I've never tried it in unity 2d for some reason
00:10
@StefanoPalazzo ah OK. misunderstood you there.
@james If you want, you can check out the very latest version by typing "bzr branch lp:askubuntu-lens", start it manually by doing "./unity-askubuntu-daemon", after cding into the directory (should be called askubuntu-lens/). This way, you'll be able to see any error messages in case it crashes
It's very hard if I can't try it out :P You might need to run "sudo python setup.py install"
@StefanoPalazzo I'll give that a go after I get unity working again.
heh take your time ;-)
@StefanoPalazzo here's the icon in unity 2d - i.imgur.com/BSkWy.jpg
@StefanoPalazzo will do. ;)
@JamesGifford whoops that's wrong isn't it :D Thanks a lot for letting me know, I'll make a note of it
00:16
@StefanoPalazzo You're welcome :)
I'll go file a report on launchpad?
@James if you have the time, that'd be great!
@StefanoPalazzo at this point in the day, i've got nothing BUT time to burn. lol
do you know where to go to?
See you later people, have a nice time. Ciao
00:18
bye @GeppettvsDConstanzo!
Bye! @GeppettvsDConstanzo
@StefanoPalazzo i'm off here for the night - i'll pop back in in the morning. Thanks for making this lens!
@JamesGifford thanks for filing a bug :-) Bye
@StefanoPalazzo ok
New laptop
@StefanoPalazzo No problem - since I can't code, I report bugs! It's what I do. :) cya!
I think I found the problem
jorge@jillociraptor:~/src/unity-place-askubuntu-0.1$ /usr/lib/unity-place-askubuntu/unity-askubuntu-daemon
ERROR:root:Could not find any typelib for Dee

00:25
that's one I've never seen
@JorgeCastro so, my installation is utterly broken (can't install unity, broken packages), and it's 2:00AM, the packages should be fixed tomorrow I hope.
Not really sure what I can do in the meantime
I think the problem is dee being broken
again
did you do a partial upgrade?
unity and compiz should be held back for you right now
yeah, they always break something :)
@JorgeCastro to finish the upgrade, it needs to run "grub-update" which fails (I think it's to do with stat and the weird live-filesystem)
ah
yeah, kernel upgrade will always fail
I guess zsync a new iso tomorrow?
00:32
ah! I should have guessed that after the third time
@JorgeCastro doing that right now, the installation always takes a while, not sure if I'm still able to be productive once it's done, given the time :)
well
I meant zsync while you sleep
ken's going to help me with this libdee thing
maybe we'll sort it before you awaken!
that'd be brilliant, in any case I'll have the whole day tomorrow - I hope it's going to be more of a focus on features tomorrow ;-)
I'll be off then, thank you again @Jorge, and, if you get a chance, give my thanks to Ken too
ah dude
found the problem
it's packaging
it'll be fixed when you wake up!
oh
perfect :D that was quick!
01:02
@StefanoPalazzo I fixed my problem ^^
it was a problem with using mixed old and new profiles in ff4
don't put new wine in old wine skins - biblical quotation

1 hour later…
02:16
I like pie...
02:39
@StefanoPalazzo: What is AskUbuntu Tools?
Sorry, I kind of missed the discussion.

3 hours later…
05:53
hola

1 hour later…
06:58
@all Hello
Why the ubuntu start page with the ubuntu icon removed from Firefox-4.0?
07:17
Good morning all :)
08:02
@StefanoPalazzo hi
08:43
Does @Anyone know how to calculate entropy of a string, and use it to match two strings?
09:01
good morning!
@OctavianDamiean morning!
just for posterity:
0
Q: How to determine a match between 2 JSONs?

Kaustubh PHello, I have two data sources, and both of them return JSONs. I want to ensure that there is some percentage of match (overlap of data, if you will) in the two JSONs, so as to collate them and store in a single record. Is comparing the entropy of the two strings the best way? Are there any other...

fixed your question up :)
@KaustubhP that is quite an interesting question actually
@OctavianDamiean thanks!
not to dwell and discuss but I thought starting a ques with hello is a good thing ;)
09:17
well the general policy is to avoid that as it is not necessary. It does not help solving your problem :)
this answer pwns :D
29
A: What Android 3rd-party libraries are there?

Octavian DamieanI'm going to cumulate the answers here in a sorted list so no information gets lost. Utility Droid-fu android-screenshot-library android-alarm-database OpenIntents ACRA Network Ganymed SSH2 Barcode/QR-Code/Image Processing ZXing jjil (Image Processing) OpenASURF (Image Processing) Co...

@OctavianDamiean so, I tried calculating the entropy, of a sample string, using the code I found here.
page not found :(
oh yea
I just added a few strings to a list and calculated the entropy of it. But really, I could not draw any conclusion.
What is your take on calculating entropy?
@KaustubhP phew lemme check that out and read it up a bit as I haven't done anything like that before :)
@OctavianDamiean sure. I am thinking of this method, because the only other method was to loop through all the keys in the JSON, and keep matching.
09:25
well that might sound stupid and it might not work at all but I'd concatenate everything into one string and create and MD5 hash of it, that would however only tell if the entire response is altered and not the lever of alteration
@OctavianDamiean precisely. I also need to know the level of difference. The MD5 is always going to be different :p
god I really have to do more physics and statistical mathematic
what is a new dill Firefox-4.0 remove the ubuntu start page?
Firefox 3 was nice with the ubuntu icon with start page
@Achu how did you install it and on what Ubuntu version?
@OctavianDamiean I install it using this way askubuntu.com/questions/6339/how-do-i-install-firefox-4/… see my second answer
@OctavianDamiean i just added the stable ppa and install the normal way
09:40
oh well thats the reason
once FF4 will officially be supported through an update then you should get the default Ubuntu startpage
I guess you could manually add it, I don't know how tho, I'm not a FF user
@KaustubhP that blog you've posted is awesome
@OctavianDamiean ohhh may be that will be the reason Thank you for your replay
oh yea Ubuntu cloud days starts today!
@OctavianDamiean thank google :p
10:35
yay finally a command line question :)
loves command line questions :D
@Oli that hardinfo thingy is quite interesting, thanks :)
11:00
Yay! Unity started working again.
@OctavianDamiean Wahoo! Command line questions are awesome. :)
@JamesGifford yup. :D
@GeorgeEdison is feeling the love from Webupd8.org webupd8.org/2011/03/quickly-share-folder-over-http-with.html

Blahg. Any compiz/unity experts lurking?
@JamesGifford that would be @OctavianDamiean
@Allan haha thanks.
11:04
uh? Me? :D
well lets find out if that is true hehe
wow I think my pendrive is dead
here's the issue. I updated, and now Unity's workspaces feature isn't working.
i've already run compiz --replace
isn't working in what sense?
the workspaces are there (I can move windows to them, like here) ![](i.imgur.com/YzcGA.jpg0
but I can't switch to them, either using keyboard shortcuts, or the unity place/lens/whatever it's called now.
@JamesGifford if you are trying to switch using the workspace lens what happens?
does the expo work?
@OctavianDamiean lens doesn't load. (Expo doesn't work)
seems like the laws governing window management are broken.
11:12
@JamesGifford oh hmm ok, I'll take a look in about half an hour, I have to run now but I'll get back to you in a bit
@OctavianDamiean OK. Thanks. :)
11:27
alright I'm back
I'm going to install the latest daily and get back to you ;)

Q: Skype doesn't find my audio input

AlvarHi, Skype doesn't find my audio input. If I click on the "Microphone" no other suggestions appears, my web camera works. In windows everything works. This is my audio preferences. audio settings.

hehehehe :D
Well Good morning world! (12:32 CET)
Morning @Allan Thanks for the help yestarday! :D
@OctavianDamiean Thank you!
11:49
@GeorgeEdison Aye, it's a group for all of us who manage some software to do with AU. We can have a single point of contact, and a single PPA! All while we think about making our programs work together, good idea, right? :) (Jorge came up with it)
nice job on that webupd8 artice by the way!

Q: "Error probing SMB2" startup message

AlvarHi, When I startup my laptop this text is always shown and the stratup takes 10 seconds longer. It has always done that even since I first installed ubuntu nearly a year ago. My laptop is an Asus 1201n here is the picture I took on startup.

12:24
installing Unity-daily. :D
lol
well, i'm hoping it'll install. XD
lame!
hah! I'm mainly doing it because I'm trying to figure out this bug
`The following packages will be upgrade: bamfdaemon libbamf0 libnux-0.9-0 libnux-0.9-common libzeitgeist-gio
nux-tools'
Looks like there are a few editors rising in the ranks! I haven't seen these many edits in a while
12:41
@MarcoCeppi What? this is just a hunch but have you been working instead? ;)
@OctavianDamiean Good morning :D,
@JamesGifford heya I'm back and well like always there is only one thing I can say, the infamous on my machine it works :D
@dv3500ea thanks a lot for your bug report, I'm depending on some upgrades, but I hope to have it fixed today
13:15
hello @AlinAndrei :)
Hello :)
so you're a countryman ... kind of :D
13:27
@AlinAndrei are you going to attend the UDS?
@Alvar you make a good point
morning @lazyPower :)
@Octavian: actually yes... I can't wait
@AlinAndrei cool cool, then we are going to meet there :)
@lazyPower morning
I may stay just for ~3 days though
13:39
Morning @StefanoPalazzo @OctavianDamiean
13:54
is it possible to flag a user's page?
@JorgeCastro I believe so
I don't see where
@JorgeCastro flag a comment or Q/A of him and explain the situation in the flag message
he hasn't made any comments or q/a
someone msg'ed me this in irc
oh boy ... what an idiot
13:56
Yeah, give me a second
oh man, really...
He has posted something but it was deleted for being offensive
There we go. I think he's working really hard for a suspension
@StefanoPalazzo new dee got uploaded while I was asleep
dunno if it fixes anything though
@JorgeCastro sort of, yes, there was a weird error where one of the packages' files was missing, now the daemon start and runs okay, no more crashes. However, still doesn't show any of the model (i.e. no icons).
I gotta finish this Unity report, then I will grab my clean laptop and try
14:01
@JorgeCastro sure, I'm really happy it runs now, anyway :)
ono :O
I wrote them! told them that the PPA isn't ready
oh well :-) I can hardly complain (:
now I really need to get it working before today's package is build, when ever that is
well, the dee thing isn't your fault
@JorgeCastro that works after I've re-installed the package that provides dee.py, but didrocks and kamstrup agree that was weird, they didn't have to do that. So no idea what's going on there.

Now, I've set up everything for development, and everything works perfectly. I've no idea though if it does when you just install the package from the ppa. Let me know once you've tested it. If it works, it looks like we're alright!
@StefanoPalazzo ken's talking about it with him right now
I tested it, fails for me
14:23
Now I wish I made a mistake :P My hands are tied, looks like the error is only concerning gir1.2-dee-0.5
yeah it's a packaging error
14:50
Well they're on it; it's stopped working for me as well now. But I got just a tiny bit of work done in the meantime :) (we have a nice readme now)
15:10
hi
morning @TheX
@StefanoPalazzo hows it going
?
pretty good thanks :) yourself?
aright, a bit on the tired side, can't wait for spring break
15:43
this should fix it
Ken says he got it
sound great!
@JorgeCastro the build-service says it's going to be build in in an hour, is that accurate?
depends
and then the publisher runs on the hour
so I would say at the top of the next hour we should be good
but the deb will be on that page
which you can snag right away after it builds
@AlinAndrei you can just submit fixes to the Firefox answer so your link doesn't get buried in the comments.
great, will do. Fingers crossed, we should be okay now \o/
yeah!
@StefanoPalazzo see #ayatana wrt. that guy trying to fetch icons
looks broken
so I guess getting gravatars won't work
16:34
didn't we have launchpad onebox support on AU?
@JorgeCastro kamstrup just came up with a real boon. As soon as things are working again, that bug about searching "everything" being slow should be fixed in no time
nudges @MarcoCeppi
2 mins ago, by Octavian Damiean
didn't we have launchpad onebox support on AU?
@OctavianDamiean We do - for bugs
(PS, My scrollbar works :P )
hehe :D
well how is it implemented?
the LP onebox
If you run Chromium from a terminal (with the extension enabled) then I get numerous lines of "NPP_New()". Disabling the extension appears to make these go away. Don't know if this bug is actually in Chromify-OSD bug or in some library that it uses.
Chromify-OSD
Medium / In Progress
16:39
no I mean technically, is it per-SE-site or is it centralized?
It's all chats
Since we're all on the same server
oh ok
hmm I think that manpages.ubuntu.com would be a nice addition
Already here
no way

oh boy :D
that made my day
is there a list of supported Ubuntu related onebox sites?
or is it just the two of em?
I kept bothering @MarcG until he made us a few oneboxes
I think that's it
oh ok, cool stuff :)
Hello people.
@GeppettvsDConstanzo hello :)
Yesterday I saw an ad about a gadget or something, related to something that can be placed in a panel in order to receive notifications about the activity in the questions and answers site.

@Alvar hello
Yeah, that's it. Thank you very much @Octavian Damiean
Hello Alvar
I love your last post on the edit it's awesome! :d
"Dare to post your own answer, don't comment on mine. Thank you!"
gulp! errrrm....
:D
16:51
lol, sorry for that... you know... I have faced a couple of those interesting comments and reviews about what I say, and I know that I am not always right...
the chat bookmark is from @Octavian
which is really cool indeed
Hey everybody, is there a log file or something I can view if I get a [fail] on an init.d restart of a service?
hehe.. The solution to use my akg k530 as a audio input was cool... Well it's just physics but still very cool...
well there must be a way to make the audio input microphone in my computer to work rigth?
I envy your akg
@GeppettvsDConstanzo they are awesome! :D
sorry I am installing stackapplet and it seems to be demanding a lot on my computer, or I have a problem right here
16:53
@GeppettvsDConstanzo oh yea that is actually very easy. If you want to create a bookmark of the current chat then click on room and select create new bookmark
@GeppettvsDConstanzo I bought them hee... cdon.se/hemelektronik/akg_k_530_hi-fi-747417
if you want to make a bookmark of something which was written on another day, then you go to the transcript of it and create a bookmark there :)
@GeppettvsDConstanzo You only have 3 up votes... wow
sorry
my computer was hanging
brb in a moment
has a nice idea
I'm going to create a Chromium script-extension thingy like George Edison's Manual draft save thingy
17:01
Hey everybody, is there a log file or something I can view if I get a [fail] on an init.d restart of a service?
but for AskUbuntu
@sadmicrowave checkout the syslog looking for that services name
@OctavianDamiean, which syslog file?, located where?
you can either use the System Log Viewer (GUI application) or you can just grep the syslog file itself at /var/log/
grep /var/log and sudo grep /var/log is also getting hung up and not completing (forgive my ignorance)
no no you have to grep the file, /var/log/syslog
The grep utility shall search the input files, selecting lines matching one or more patterns; the types of patterns are controlled by the options specified. The patterns are specified by the -e option, -f option, or the pattern_list operand. The pattern_list’s value shall consist of one or more patterns separated by <newline>s; the pattern_file’s contents shall consist of one or more patterns terminated by <newline>. By default, an input line shall be selected if any pattern, treated as an entire basic regular expression (BRE) as described in the Base Definitions volume of IEEE Std 1003.1-2001, Section 9.3, Basic Regular Expressions, matches any part of the line excluding the terminating <newline>; a null BRE shall match every line. By default, each selected input line shall be written to the standard output. Regular expres

any AskUbuntu mods around?
kinda need one to answer something :P
@EvilPhoenix Everybody is a secret mod! :)
:P
question was specifically about why the bot-catchers are attacking me :/
ask it and they might popup! :D
@EvilPhoenix 'sup?
every answer / comment / edit i do requires me to verify myself as human
@StefanoPalazzo ^
17:13
just a sec
well, at least every answer and every edit (even to my own answers)
#Fail! :(
did I get a previously-botted IP or something during my router reboot yesterday?
@EvilPhoenix That's normal, the catcha appears at 'random'. Nobody know exactly what triggers it, but it will get less over time
@OctavianDamiean, Mar 23 06:25:07 USLONSWEB003 syslogd 1.5.0#5ubuntu4: restart. is the output
17:15
was about ready to burn the bot catcher system with a flamethrower
@EvilPhoenix I've written a big honking answer about captchas before:
4
Q: why captchas + login?

user unknownDo you get Spam from people, who do a regular login? Why do I have to solve a captcha, after going through a login? Why do I sometimes get an captcha and sometimes not? Can't the system see, that there has never been a spam from my account, but that the foolish robotdetection is constantly su...

It won't exactly solve your problem, but it explains a bit about what's going on (the bit that's public knowledge)
:P
the bit that's public knowledge doesnt answer my question in the slightest unfortunately :/
its a pita
considering that i'm NOT a bot, and this didnt EVER happen prior to my router reboot yesterday
Oli
Oli
I wish I had cable. ADSL can be so useless at times.
@EvilPhoenix there are all sorts of things that can cause this, just one example, a spammer might have used your IP address some time (presumably, your IP address changes every day). Things like that. Over time, the system learns to trust you, and you'll get less and less of them. For now I'm afraid there's nothing we can do about it
did you take a look at Jeff's tips in my answer?
nah, system lagged, didnt load the page completely
ah there it is
THAT actually answers the questions :P
i've done like 4 answers in the period of an hour, so :P
17:23
there's also a hypothesis that the page loads much slower once the system think you might be a spammer. I know wordpress does something like that. really annoying
But I've no evidence that SE does anything of the sort :)
considering i'm on a 22Mbps downspeed connection, it SHOULDNT be much slower
well if there's any truth to that, it'd just be a little sleep before the server responds to the request
that's my connection data :/
that's pretty rocking :)
so it might've been a slight hiccup in the interwebz
17:26
I've got about 6mbits down, less than one mbit up
considering i'm on a wifi connection too, it is INDEED pretty rocking
I can hit 100 down on a good day
@JorgeCastro i hate you right now
seriously hate you right now :P
@OctavianDamiean Odd that it's working for you and not me. #iShrug
@JorgeCastro Dang... that's FAST. :O
Oli
Oli
@JorgeCastro This is how you get so many more edits done than everybody else... You are the internet.
17:40
@Oli heh.
17:52
@JorgeCastro I'm not far behind you @ home, my dl hits 80mb/s quite often, my upload never seems to peg faster than 3.5 though
Damn! (@Jorge)
