How do I refresh software sources after adding a PPA http://askubuntu.com/q/182382?atw=1 #softwarecenter
The Launchpad builders are sooo slow today.
Methinks something went awry on the build farm because quite a few builders have slowed to a crawl.
hi....good morning!
00:16
Morning.
sorry...i'm gonna install Kernel 3.0.1 on ubuntu 10.10 ..it's not my computer and the user don't like new versions and says 10.10 is fast enough for him....he is requesting this because ubuntu 10.10 hasn't recognize his sound card very well...he needs to use 5.1 sound and there isn't any option to turn it on...will updating the kernel fix that? or should I use a newer Pulse audio version on this?
plz!
pretty plz

man do i despise avconv/ffmpeg bugs
Hey guys \o
o/
rebooting, something has my performance all jacked up (i think it's the same avconv bug that generated a bunch of empty files...)
@aking1012 OK
that's a nice touch, unity lenses delay-load now so the launcher is sort of responsive even while lenses are loading...someone has attention to detail
i suppose i should hook up the problematic huge command to valgrind and see what happens...
01:48
Just compiled gcalctool, the Gnome calculator.
Let's see how it runs.
@GeorgeEdison :)
Hmm... back to the drawing board?
@GeorgeEdison Yes mate, back to square 1
I guess I need some other files.
I think so:)
02:15
@GeorgeEdison linux packages that have that problem solve it by installing this package...here is the file list: packages.ubuntu.com/precise/all/gsettings-desktop-schemas/…
I think I found the problem... possibly.
as long as you found it...
Well one of the problems is with the NSIS generating code.
It's generating paths with '/' instead of '\'.
Nope - still broken.
you're here, too, @smartboyhw ?
assuming you're the same one from IRC :P
02:32
can we have special characters in our names? or does it have to be normal letters?
Hi everyone :)
Good Morning
Wow what a day
o/
02:43
nephew is in the house
Checking on some stuff before I leave for school
Hello @lazyPower @aking1012 @RolandTaylor @GeorgeEdison
03:07
@AmithKK hey
Ubuntu sound volume is 40% lower than in Windows http://askubuntu.com/q/182423?atw=1 #sound
03:30
Hi all...good morninggg..
04:16
morning :D
Python Makefile == really dumb.
Why is it trying to execute a file it has just built when I'm cross-compiling???
04:30
Upgrading to Twitter Bootstrap 2.1. WOW.
The fonts are huge.

1 hour later…
05:32
anyone know how to use ubuntu live cd to install wireless drivers in xubuntu?
sure.
download the deb and install it?
how so?
can you access internet?
nope
do you already have the drivers?
05:34
wireless works out of the box in Ubuntu so i figured i can them off the live cd
hm i dont think it works that way o.O
someone might help you with it though.
@Anwar ping.
lol thx
@jokerdino hi
good morning
hiya, good day.
05:36
good the chipset but i cant remember the model
do you know if it is possible to get the driver from live cd or something?
@alme1304 not tough to figure out.
i think it is lspci?
lspci|grep Network
So, the driver is in Ubuntu Live Cd but not in xubuntu?
correct
@jokerdino lsmod spat out some hardware info, but i cant find the model
Can you figure out the driver name with the command above?
05:38
Hi I'm back, who pinged me earlier?
@Anwar I thought you can figure out the chipset. I might be wrong.
I would do a lspci -v | less command to see all the devices and their driver name
I trust you more than me.
@smartboyhw hi
@smartboyhw not me
@jokerdino OK
Lunch now:)
05:44
controller BCM4321
@alme1304 Can you verify whether xubuntu have the package linux-image-extra with command dpkg -l linux-image-extra?
oh god. broadcom....... NOOOOOOOOOOO
@Anwar no package
@alme1304 which version?
if i am not wrong, it should work out of the box in 12.04 kernel v3.2
@alme1304 Install that package and see. I think it has some extra package. wait i am verifying it
05:46
it works fine in ubuntu
@Anwar he got no internet you see.
@alme1304 are you dualbooting or just switching desktop environment from login screen?
@alme1304 Oh, then use dpkg-repack in Live cd of Ubuntu to grab the .deb
broadcom.com/docs/linux_sta/README.txt tells me to run MAKE, but it is not found either
don't ever compile those things from source if you are on ubuntu. there are lots of better way to do it
ok
im currently triple booting (ubuntu is my main, and use Win7 to play DoD)
05:49
right. you are on xubuntu and ubuntu 12.04 right?
@Anwar how do i run it off the live cd?
@jokerdino correct
Good.
@alme1304 dpkg-repack linux-image-extra
Is it bad if I have a really low percentage of my answers that were accepted?
@njallam How much?
@Anwar dpkg-repack not found either
3/15 = 20%
Yes, but is it bad?
@njallam no one really cares
@alme1304 it should be in live cd.
05:52
@alme1304 first use lspci -v | less to see what driver is being used in live cd, then use dpkg -S drivername to find the package name providing the driver and then sudo apt-get install dpkg-repack and then dpkg-repack packagename
and when I reboot into xubuntu it will be there or what?
@alme1304 later copy the deb to xubuntu and install it from there when you boot into it
not to be picky, but is there a way to do that in this machine?
you can mount xubuntu partition right?
nope, different compurter
05:55
got a usb?
then use it to copy the deb from live cd and to xubuntu
I have a Broadcom BCM5906M, it is using tg3 driver and I saw it is provided by linux-image-extra-version-number from the command dpkg -S tg3. You should use the actual package name with correct version number. for me, it would be linux-image-extra-3.5.0-2-generic
ok, so apperently there is a package that installs the driver, which I downloaded through synaptic (on this comp), I just dont know where it downloads to
/var/cache/apt/archives
@alme1304 you will find the .deb file there
06:07
its not showing up..
i got the file on the drive, but xu.. wont show it
xu doesn't show the drive or the deb file?
Back from lunch!
o/ jokerdino
not in the file manager at least, ls shows it. how do you install .deb again?
sudo dpkg -i name.deb
...errors encountered
06:09
@smartboyhw hi
i guess root owns the deb?
@jokerdino Back. Anyway, what is happening here?:)
@smartboyhw Good morning!
@smartboyhw troubleshoot and doing support for alme
@njallam Good afternoon!
@smartboyhw :P
06:10
@jokerdino Good job. I got some Ubuntu Studio things to deal with
@smartboyhw bye
@jokerdino NO, I'm staying here:)
@smartboyhw ok
@jokerdino can we re-link with imgur without re-uploading? sorry, i'm new in imgur things
@Anwar you have to upload to imgur. do you see the button?
click on the second option "already in web" and just paste the url
06:11
:)
Yes, thanks. I saw it.
@Anwar that way, you don't need to download and upload again. Saves b/w for you :)
So, why not giving the solution in answer section?
dont know.
i sort of answered a couple of questions in comments today.
and added 3 other answers.
because i am not too sure
You can remove it later. Note that, the OPs sometimes aren't too sure also
06:14
yeah.. i am hoping to play safe :)
and you see, I have given one without being too sure also. the gsettings one
yeah i think i saw that.
i dont know very well so couldnt upvote your answer.
it's ok.
if i was sure, i would have answered it :)
but I would upvote your answer in lua question, because it is valid and good with at least the current state of question
06:17
I would but I dont know about chrubuntu
I think, it is only the name given by him
If you search for chrubuntu, you see it is a custom version or something
hmm..
yeah.. same confusion
I can say, you should not trust me more than you, at least on some things.
06:20
well fair enough. i trust you more on things that i don't know much about.
and i think you are pretty good on package management
yeah.. thanks.. This is good
Need to go for the Friday prayer. cya. bye
@jokerdino How's the bug status?
06:23
@njallam Which bug?
@jokerdino The one you reported
Which bug are we talking about???????
@njallam If you are talking about the one I did yesterday, turns out it wasn't a bug after all.
@jokerdino LOL
@jokerdino Oh
What was it?
06:24
I overlooked two upvotes on a question.
How do I view all available HDD's/Partitions http://askubuntu.com/q/182446?atw=1 #filesystem
Anyone would like to answer that question?
@Anwar I just find out that ubuntu uses a different driver, use that right?
06:27
@alme1304 sure. if you can grab the driver deb, just install it
assuming it is the same architecture and version
lspci lists the driver as 'wl' and dpkg -S lists 100+ packages, any way of narrowing it down?
broadcom-wl
python file
jockey/handlers/broadcom_wl.py
ah
jockey.. i hate that
06:31
not sure what it is but i think i hate it too
lol
that python file was in ubuntu right?
i suggest this
in ubuntu, download the driver and copy the deb
yeah
then reboot to xubuntu and install it
if it works in ubuntu, you can just use it
how do i get the file in the 1st place, im already booted into it
just copy it?
ah, my brain is failing me
was it 4321?
06:34
yeah

Q: Wireless doesn't work on a Broadcom BCM4312

BoderickAs stated, I've just upgraded to 12.04 and my Dell Inspiron 1545 isn't recognising its wireless card and I was wondering if anybody could help? Edit: Okay, so I found the wireless card by using lspci -vvv and it returned this: 0c:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4312 802.11b...

try that?
nm-tool lists the driver as wl
wl is too vague. it is just its way of saying wireless driver
maybe you check if xubuntu has bcmwl-kernel-source installed or something
i tried with the wrong version i guess
06:39
trying now
no supported card found
with that, i am lost.
if you can solve it yourself, or find someone who can help you, good luck.
or ask a question on the site and someone might pick you up
yeah its quoter to 3 im done for now
thanks a lot tho
@alme1304 good night and welcome.
jokerdino: So you like here more or #ubuntuforums?;P
Here.
i do hang out on IRC once in a while.
06:51
:)
07:45
any help how can i install php5.2 on ubuntu 12.04 server?
the repo has 5.4?
no 5.3
someone might have a ppa. dont know
Yeah but can't found ppa for that
07:56
Thanks @jokerdino let me check that
hmm
sudo apt-get install php5=5.2.10.dfsg.1-2ubuntu6 php5-dev=5.2.10.dfsg.1-2ubuntu6 php-pear=5.2.10.dfsg.1-2ubuntu6 php5-cgi=5.2.10.dfsg.1-2ubuntu6 php5-cli=5.2.10.dfsg.1-2ubuntu6 php5-common=5.2.10.dfsg.1-2ubuntu6 php5-curl=5.2.10.dfsg.1-2ubuntu6 php5-gd=5.2.10.dfsg.1-2ubuntu6 php5-mcrypt=5.2.10.dfsg.1-2ubuntu6 php5-mysql=5.2.10.dfsg.1-2ubuntu6 php5-pgsql=5.2.10.dfsg.1-2ubuntu6

08:35
@GeorgeEdison I like it!
09:04
What's the most stable Ubuntu version? http://askubuntu.com/q/182483?atw=1 #version
09:31
what is the format of a skype number from lets say USA ? how many digits and all
skype numbers are formatted the same as physical numbers
they'ld have to be for this to work: support.skype.com/en/faq/FA331/…
downvoting wtihout justifying should't be permitted
doesn't help in anything
if it is downovted, it is obvious something is wrong.
09:41
if an answer is downvoted and no one says why, how does that help the person who posted the answer
i think it can. say you think one answer is better than another and you're trying to fix the display order
or it can be just out of "spyte" revenge or some other thing
yeah, we are all looking out for some revenge here
i'm not talking about my personal answers but i saw that link askubuntu.com/questions/182483/…
happens to me on most answers on UL. i put in a functional answer, someone else adds 5 words and a link or an epistle that says the same thing 5 minutes later
09:43
if you check the answer from Tom Brossman, you'll understand what i'm saying
@LnxSlck let me edit it.
it could be a simple thing, if you click downvote, something would popup like: justify or select " i think there's a better answer"
@LnxSlck i don't know that it was spite. i kind of agree that 12.04 is not the most stable version of ubu, but one downvote would have fixed the display order
what aking said.
Saying precise is the most stable is incorrect IMO.
i'm not talking about the answer itself, but the fact that a user posted and answer, got 2 downvotes and he doesn't even know why
Two downvotes with no suggestions or comments why? That's not helpful, and this is a perfectly good answer. – Tom Brossman
09:46
@LnxSlck it has been suggested but the developers didn't implement it. figure.
i understand what he feels, for a person to get a downvote, and don't know why..
just saying
@LnxSlck then give the comment i left an uptick so he reads it
@aking1012, done :)
moving along...
right
woke up from an hour slumber and got two upvotes o.O
happens. i've been pulling bounties on some of my more complicated older answers that didn't get many upvotes
09:50
no, just a difference. i answered them before the slumber.
i more meant voting/rep is a funny thing
So, i have two answers that aren't deleted with 0 net score.
would get back and improve them one day
What?
nm, i re-read it and interpreted it differently
No, sometimes I delete 0 vote answers because there are better answers.
Or mine wasn't correct / cannot be improved further, etc
@LnxSlck they should keep a compulsory reason box or something so that the downvoted can know why...
09:55
@ShyamK, yes, that was my idea
@jokerdino yeah. either way. no worries. as long as you're net helping an old not so great answer can slip through. just my opinion. i've had some fellow on SU running through 2 year old answers editing commands that no longer work...
@LnxSlck if they did that, the database size would grow exponentially - if it wasn't pick one and just an int. i mean think about how much additional text would have to be stored
@LnxSlck gr8 minds think alike? :D
@aking1012 yeah but it depends on what i feel about my answer.
@ShyamK, true :)
@aking1012, a simple popup box would do that?
@aking1012 hmm.. true.. everyone who has joined the SE world multiplied by atleast 5.. wow.. tons of junk data..
09:59
@LnxSlck where do they store the reason? if it's multiple choice or custom like flags, i think most people would use custom,
