2:00 PM
At least Windows does boot in case the hibernation failed

izx
@Takkat I know, but the recommendation given will mount rw after removing the hiberfile. @adempewolff if it's the same in 12.04, I would
@Takkat losing state with unsaved files is extremely disappointing for anyone

@Takkat I was looking through the manpage and trying to decide if there was a difference between passing the read only option as a switch or option (-r vs. -o ro) what do you think?

I remember faintly that Windows booted anyway in case hibernation failed as it always failed those days back when I was on XP

@Takkat yup, hiberfile.sys right in the root directory--or whatever it's called in windows
@Takkat oh it will still boot for sure. but the user could lose saved work

@adempewolff they sure could...
That's why I never do that.

2:02 PM
the point is that nautilus should not suggest as a first option something that could cause the user to lose information without at the very least explaining what it suggesting very clearly

Hibernation in days when booting is faster than waking up makes no sense
@adempewolff that's clearly a bug then.

izx
It's setting up your session in the absence of session-save that's a pain, no matter the OS

yeah. this is 12.04, so I'll go file it now

@Takkat that is, if session saving would work :P

:) Hi @htorque

2:04 PM
hi
> An X error occurred. The error was BadAtom.
nothing but trouble with those bad atoms!
i'll just invent a bad atom filter

An error filter would be a better invention.

try { run(); } catch (Exception e) {} → no more exceptions! :D

Ignore all evil - just carry on being happy.

I love ubuntu-bug -w I don't even have to remember how to spell package names

Meh

2:09 PM
hm, seems nouveau doesn't like my gpu yet
though the t520 isn't really new

@izx @Takkat I'm trying to think of a good summary for this bug, any ideas?

this is the first system that gives me all kinds of "doesn't work" linux experiences :D

Quantal it is?
@adempewolff "Nautilus recommendations for mounting a hibernated drive may lead to data loss" or sth like that?
But we should know if that is true that data get lose - I don't know.

izx
What @Takkat said -- only "windows partition" instead of drive?

yeah - Windows :)

2:15 PM
yeah something like that was what I was thinking. On another note, I can't find the documentation for the remove_hiberfile option in man mount or man ntfs-3g where on earth should I be looking?

izx
@Takkat Any unsaved data is lost if hiberfile removed -- good enough for me

and what exactly does it do?
Not if Windows tries to recover them when the wake option was set.

@izx its possible it just does something like "commenting" out the file, then reverts after the partition is unmounted

izx
@adempewolff It's in the man: paste.ubuntu.com/1021329

but in this case then it shouldn't say "remove"

izx
2:16 PM
"Please note,
this means that the saved Windows session will be completely
lost. Use this option under your own responsibility."

@izx eh?! am I blind?
ah, the answer is yes. just saw it my 3rd time looking....
okay, proceeding with bug report

I want to watch @izx play doomsday zone.

okay "Nautilus suggests option for mounting hibernated ntfs partitions that could lead to data loss"
sound good?

izx
@AmithKK Never been much of a platformer fan -- blame my folks who didn't get me a console as a kid :D

@izx I'd still like to watch you play it
GENS is also for ubuntu

izx
2:21 PM
@adempewolff "recommends option" I guess?

BBL

@adempewolff sounds good

does the "further information" field in the bug report accept any tags?

@adempewolff tags are in Extra options below

oh sorry, I meant HTML tags

2:28 PM
I never tried that - I don't think so.
Plain, unformatted ASCII

@Takkat okay. I thought so. thanks!

Can you answer this? How can I set an HTML page as the desktop background? http://askubuntu.com/questions/87598/how-can-i-set-an-html-page-as-the-desktop-background?atw=1 #background

@izx @Takkat paste.ubuntu.com/1021357 look good?

izx
@adempewolff perfect, but should be dialog not dialogue? also maybe include the command to mount ro - replace remove_hiberfile with ro

@izx right on both counts, making the changes now

izx
2:43 PM
@QuestionsFeed Gives me nightmares of Win 98 and "Active Desktop"

@izx oh lord. I had forgotten about that

izx
It may be properly be an ntfs-3g bug:
`./libntfs-3g/volume.c:"The NTFS partition is hibernated. Please resume and shutdown Windows\n"`

@izx I was thinking about that

izx
2:50 PM
sorry, just thought of looking up nautlius source to see if it was an easy patch

@MarcoCeppi oh heh, I can't seem to hear you.

@jokerdino Y U MUTE ME?!

I am listening to some Enthiran songs :P

@adempewolff nice work - well done

@MarcoCeppi so, anyway, what should we be doing with that query?

2:53 PM
@Takkat wouldn't have even thought of filing a bug if we all hadn't started talking about it--it takes a village!

@jokerdino nothing really, I was using it to find places that we could replace ia32-libs with the new package:i386 nomenclature

@adempewolff link to it from the AU question

but this could be used for a lot of things, like finding instances of compizconfig-manager, etc

ah, smart work. Let's get cracking on it... later.

yes...later

2:55 PM
@Takkat will do, I'm also going to add how to mount it in ro mode--if you haven't already done so in your answer

I made my answer very minimalistic on purpose.
So you need to know a bit to proceed. Nothing for newbies as said ;P
@adempewolff do add the mount bit to your answer - it will make it better :)

izx
@Takkat Absolutely. @adempewolff I removed my comment. After ro mode, suggest that there is an option to mount rw, but please refer to man ntfs-3g ;)

Deleted my answer to make @adempewolff put the mount bit in his answer ;)

@Takkat haha, editing.... editing...

In fact the remove_hiberfile option is better than the hack I linked to in my answer.

izx
3:02 PM
Reverse Peer Pressure Badge? :D

lol
Peer Pressure is still missing in my collection - they get deleted too early ;P

lol
@Takkat: on the site i post most at, i'm almost tempted to find people to downvote answers of mine so i can get that ;p

lol

lol no. I don't want that badge.
I already kick myself for getting Tumbleweed.

Peer Pressure should be a silver badge. We only have 70.

3:09 PM
Most of them don't delete theirs. because they don't know about it.

izx
Tumbleweed IMO means you're either too dumb or too smart ;) I pity the unsung heroes though...

@jokerdino or they don't care (more likely)

izx
I just went and earned Disciplined on a merged question...where I used gksudo gedit while @fossfreedom's previously accepted answer used sudo nano <pats self on back>

@Takkat yeah that probably is the main reason.

3:17 PM
Disciplined should not be too hard to get :D :D :D

Delete a good answer and undo it :P

That's cheating.

lol. not that I undid a delete. I am just suggesting :P

Delete any outdated answer instead of improving is not the best either.

I deleted a very similar answer.

izx
3:19 PM
I had to search long and hard for a good candidate that was simply...redundant, hence the pat.

3:32 PM
Oh my @jokerdino

panic mode

The Tamil Film Industry made a new one
They ported 3 idiots to tamil
Seriously?
I just saw the movie

They did it like months ago.

Yes
They kinda broke the movie a bit

I only liked the songs.
I first thought you are going to talk about what I just posted on my blog. hence the panic mode. >.>
but, the remake other lang. movies to Tamil has become a trend for quite some time.

3:37 PM
Turns Super Sonic and randomly dashes into @jokerdino

lol funny

That would hurt in real life
First of all, he has spikes
now he has a body that will break you if you touch him and he doesn't like you

@izx @Takkat edited feel free to make any additional edits you see fit.
I mentioned the remove_hiberfil option and quoted the manpage, but I didn't include instructions

hi all
@JorgeCastro Sorry I'll stop posting my stupid comments. Hope I didn't ruin your day their...

Q: Changing the Ubuntu bootup logo for a custom distribution

Roshan George I am making a custom distribution, and have a question about the Ubuntu Logo with 5 dots displayed when booting up. The Ubuntu-Logo-Script in the /lib/plymouth/themes/ubuntutext folder has the word Ubuntu and beneath that 5 progressing 'dots'. Is it possible to remove the progress bar dots, and ...

be a dupe of this one?

Q: Can I use the mac os 9 loading screen?

AlvarI want the very friendly looking old mac face. When I boot ubuntu I want this to come up instead of the purple screen as it is now. I've heard of people doing this but can it be done? I don't want this picture, I want a video of a normal mac os 9 loading screen. So I can see the loading bar g...

Don't think so.
The question is about editing the plymouth. Not changing it altogether.

3:50 PM
@adempewolff great edit. Too bad I can't upvote again ;)

@jokerdino he wants to change the image on the loading screen, as I want to?! or?

izx
@Alvar He wants an animation -- that's the difference.

@izx I asked for that first but didn't get an answer about it, so I changed it to just a picture. But I guess it's not a dupe then. :)
@izx cool will keep following his question.

izx
@Alvar That's why I put up the bounty so we can hopefully get a guide of sorts :)

@izx It's a really good question, I would have offered 100 bounty...

3:56 PM
well it's his rep..

@izx but can you actually do that?
@jokerdino I want to give more rep... it's a cool question..
but would it be easier with a video (no sound) than pictures to become a video?

izx
@Alvar: you can, once this bounty ends I believe -- "deserves extra credit" is one of the bounty options
@Alvar I've looked at the Plymouth setup and it's easier to do it with a series of 5-10 images than a "video" per se

anyway, good night all.

izx
night @jokerdino

@jokerdino hehe, night cool (it's 18:00 here :P)
@izx cool, are you making an answer or?

4:00 PM
@jokerdino night

waiting for you to leave for the night :P

izx
@Alvar No, feel free to answer the OP's question.

@izx can you have sound and an "animation" ?
@izx I don't know how to do it so I can't...
if I could have sound then I would have the Jaws theme, like the shark is coming closer and closer...

izx
@adempewolff Excellent work on the last edit, btw, I tried to see if I could set up the extra credit bounty but I guess the question is too new....
@Alvar I don't know either....

@Fossfreedom did you remove the 11.04 tag because the question wasn't 11.04 specific? (just interested to know..)
hmmm...

4:04 PM
@izx thanks, if you have time would you be able to use your Windows install to reproduce the bug and confirm it?

izx
@adempewolff Absolutely, no problem.

@izx put the link in again for added convenience :P Thanks!

izx
@adempewolff That's a mesa-utils bug?

ah, oops
wrong bug
should be this one

izx
@adempewolff Confirmed and subscribed, thanks.

4:17 PM
does Ubuntu One still only sync with folders in /home?

4:29 PM
@Alvar correct - nothing particular 11.04 about it. In-fact there are similar Qs around that we may need to merge together at some-point.
