Q: Noise from Pc (ubuntu 12.04)

user61786Yesterday i installed Ubuntu 12.04 64-bit version on my notebook (Fujitsu a530,with Intel Pentium P6200,4 Gb ram). But today the pc emits a strange noise. I installed Jupiter but this not solved the problem. So i thought that the problem was the version (64 bit),and so if i install the 32 bit,the...

@Luisalvarado you need to encourage people to put the edits in their question, that is a mess in there!

Q: Ubuntu 12.04 Menu Bar overlap

myusuf3I have dual monitors for my development machine. I usually have my terminal open fullscreen in my secondary screen as my IDE(vim) and when I click on my primary screen I get this super ugly menu overlap on my terminal even though its in full screen. The terminal program I use have no menu bar...

I have dual screen on my main machine
I find this extremely annoying
and I can't use my secondary effectively.
02:27
@myusuf3 i told you how i would fix it earlier. conversely, gnome-fallback has no top panel on the secondary display
aking1012, can you be more explicit; I have myunity open, I can find the setting
I would love no topbar on secondary? how do I this explicity?
that's if you install gnome-panel and use gnome-fallback, not with unity.
in myunity if you want transparency you want that to 100% and the bottom option to not toggle
this will affect both screens though
I was pretty sure @jrg had it solved for you earlier in chat though
no he didn't
I wish he did
i think I might just try awesome window manager
if that's what you want to do. i prefer gnome-fallback myself, but i use unity because a)it's the standard for ubuntu and b) it lets me answer questions with a default config
cool
hopefully it works out
this is starting to get ridiculouys
02:38
:)
thanks though:D
03:18
hey all
o/ @aking1012
I think I finally have it. I've got a Code::Blocks project file with two targets - one for the 32-bi version of the Gimp and one for the 64-bit version. Each target has its own set of includes and libraries to link against - and each is compiled with the appropriate variant of Mingw.
All I have to do is change that dropdown to recompile for the selected target.
03:35
Nice
+1 George
The really neat part is that I compiled everything from Ubuntu.
(Even the Windows builds of the plugin.)
Impressive
I didn't know you could cross compile on a ubuntu host like that.
Yup - the Mingw-w32 and Mingw-w64 toolchain work perfectly for that.
In fact, a lot of open-source Windows software is compiled that way.
Interesting :?
I'm not sure if it is even possible to build the Windows version of the Gimp in Windows.
:)
03:39
I wonder how well my asp projects would compile under mono....
That would be sweet to have a ubuntu build farm
@lazyPower o/
Yup, the plugin seems to work perfectly when run on a native x64 system.
Now all I need to do is write an installer for them.
@lazyPower that would be neat
note to self...if your code gets 10/10 from pylint, you were only trying to satisfy pylint. you made your code uglier to comply. ctl-Z repeatedly and save the pretty version. 8.83 is fine
03:59
I feel that
I feel that way with jslint all the time
I could force it to 10, but it would uglify my code.
04:14
okay there we go. 10/10 with minimal uglification
My code is ugly to begin with
i can only imagine what it would do to it.

'Canonical - not publicly traded' makes me sad. I wanted to use it as the default ticker symbol
^--- Just finished uploading the installers.
That's because you're the man @GeorgeEdison
I don't know what I'd do without Mingw's dlltool command.
It will generate the *.a files for the linker given just the .dll and the .def file.
yay for static linking
It's not static linking.
The *.a files just contain the entrypoints for the functions in the .dll.

Q: How do I set up Gitorious server on ubuntu?

Amith KKI wanted to know how I can set up gitorious server on ubuntu and have it work locally. I'm running 12.04 and would like to get the latest version

Upvote Please?
lol
ark
@jokerdino I get it :)
not yours.
but everyone in general. including myself
I thought gitorious was deprecated
Yeah
But there are still alot of corporate servers using it
trust me
Not saying there aren't, but if it's deprecated...installing it should be considered poor form
Someone might find it useful...I was just saying
Although the comment that points you to other questions is spot on

hi @htorque
Heya @htorque
hi @all
we have another quetzal here @.@
I like quetzls.
have you heard of quetzaghostl?
wiki.ghost-trappers.com/index.php/Quetzaghostl - comes from one of the FB games I used to play ;)
09:29
You mean quetzalcoatl?
Quetzalcoatl () is a Mesoamerican deity whose name comes from the Nahuatl language and has the meaning of "feathered serpent". The worship of a feathered serpent deity is first documented in Teotihuacan in the first century BC or first century AD. That period lies within the Late Preclassic to Early Classic period (400 BC–600AD) of Mesoamerican chronology, and veneration of the figure appears to have spread throughout Mesoamerica by the Late Classic (600–900 AD). In the Postclassic period (900 – 1519 AD) the worship of the feathered serpent deity was based in the ...
I also enjoy the Nahuatl langauge. No one can pronounce the names right.
Popocatepl y Ixtachihuatl
So, on a separate note...yay me for finally making some python pylint is happy with
@jokerdino All these words come from Nahuatl originally. You can tell because they end with TLs
Quetzal gets a za in there
does it have something to do with 2012 and the mayans?
aztecs and mayans are far apart right?
@jokerdino 2012 is over according to the mayans
or so I have heard
09:33
mayans are over according to the calendar.
@AmithKK their calendar didn't account for leap year. if they were right, we would already be obliterated
Yes, but I belive their languages share a lot in the same way Spanish and Romanian are close
The phoneme range of their languages are similar-ish
Anyway, my SSH public key was getting pretty stale, so...

hi @AmirthamPurendraRamanB
Hello @AmirthamPurendraRamanB
Hai to all
I would like to learn ubuntu
from where i should i start and i have some basic knowledge in linux
2
A: Setting up a git server

realcnbsIt is very easy to achieve with gitolite. In less than an hour you will have easy configurable and secure multiuser git server. I have an howto article on my site http://realcnbs.com/2010/12/setup-git-server-gitolite-ubuntu/

Broken Link?
You decide
@AmirthamPurendraRamanB There is no "Place to start"
You can start from like anywhere
09:52
@AmithKK 404
@AmirthamPurendraRamanB I liked RHCE by Jang as a general linux admin introduction. It's not unique to RHEL. Just using it is the place to start though.
@aking1012 ok
@aking1012 ok asking10
09:55
I tell everyone that asks me where to start with linux to install it as their primary OS. It becomes magically easier when you don't have a choice...
@AmithKK DO you any links regarding learing linux online
@AmirthamPurendraRamanB Ask Ubuntu of course
i think i'm going for sushi today...completely off-topic
2
gnome-sushi ?
10:05
never tried them myself.
ditto
it's too expensive given that it's raw :D
you have a valid point
it's harder to ensure it's not going to make you sick when it's not brought to kill bacteria temperature...hence more expensive, but better for you since you don't cook out all the nutrients
10:09
@JacobJohanEdwards how did i miss that?
calling it spam...flagged
@jokerdino The human mind is a pattern-finding machine, and tends to gloss over things that look totally incoherent.
it probably got kicked out of the front page
i only look at the unanswered page
that's entirely too long now too

Q: Weather Gadget like Windows 7

dotdawtdaughtI am new to Ubuntu and would very much like to see a weather gadget (aka widgets). Can anyone recommed a simple add-that could give me a little weather, clock, twitter crawl, etc? Thanks

I call it conky
10:14
screenlets
they work with unity...if you can get over unity --replace & and setsid unity moving them around
i stopped using screenlets and conky long time ago
i was just likened to yoda.../me feelz special
hi @jrg
special you feel?
Welcome @jrg
10:18
@htorque special i do
jrg
jrg
@AmithKK Gitorious? Ew. Gitolite is da stuff.
i am sorry, i never knew who or what is yoda
jrg
jrg
Hello!
@jokerdino Yoda is a wise old Jedi in Star Wars.
Star wars and star trek. Not my area
10:20
Speak in yoda We will
jrg
jrg
Comon, and you use Ubuntu? :O
2
@jokerdino You speak as if they're the same thing
@jrg heh how is it even related?
@JacobJohanEdwards it's the same thing as people that don't use linux talking about differing unices/linuces as if they're the same
@jokerdino :marcoface:
10:21
@JacobJohanEdwards they are the same star thingie right? :D
@jokerdino Genre labels are constrictive. People will call "No country for old men" a western.
jrg
jrg
@jokerdino Nerdery. ;)
so, i can only tell we have star wars / star trek nerds here
Actually, no.
I lied
10:24
It's just a bit of a pet peeve of mine. "Science fiction" is considered one genre, despite the fact that nearly any type of fiction can be written in it. Romance, adventure, comedy, mystery...
I never watched Star Wars
jrg
jrg
Star Wars is a Space Opera and swashbuckling good story. Star Trek is about how humans get to be so advanced, we can go faster than light and use a transporter to to from point A to point B without moving a muscle.
@AmithKK that should be a crime in most countries
3
I guess its piration time then
jrg
jrg
@aking1012 I don't like him. He better be careful, or he'll be dead!
10:25

hmm i think i remember seeing the yoda in Harry potter. the same guy right?
nitro facepalm
@jokerdino WHAT?

it's my moment!
Hope that's not a Rebecca Black Reference @jokerdino
10:27
but who was that guy with the socks in HP?
@jokerdino That was Dobby
jrg
jrg
Dobby. A elf, not a Yoda.
@AmithKK It's not. Really
jrg
jrg
He was so annoying in the books.
jrg
jrg
10:28
@JacobJohanEdwards either I'm gravely mistaken, or that is Gandalf.
man, they all look the same.
@jokerdino Cthulhu doesn't wear socks
@jrg Notice anything else :D
@aking1012 I can only tell Cthulhu was in one of my python games
hides after his hp lovecraft reference
jrg
jrg
Other than the fact that he's saying something Yoda said but is attributing it to DDore? NOPE.
I can only tell Cthulhu is in that Narwhal Song
wow, that was a long tangent
@jrg We better change the name of this room to Star Wars misconception room
@aking1012 I blame @AmithKK
10:32
“He has a song,” the narwhal replied. “He is the prince that was promised, and his is the song of ice and fire.”
jrg
jrg
@AmithKK No, I'll just migrate these messages to SciFi and Fantasy, and then none of them will sleep for a week because we're so bad. ;p

@jrg LOL
Stupid Video title
jrg
jrg
That was random.
10:34
For the past 10 minutes, yes.
Yes

I wonder who started it and how.
@jokerdino I did

Sorry about that
I didn't know that yoda was not a good topic to bring here

@AmithKK no, not the black scrollbars
i'll get you a screenshot later, i've gotta go in a moment
@JacobJohanEdwards You make it sound like I started the whole O/T mess. Not fair

@JacobJohanEdwards No, I made things go off the rails.
That's my job. Unfortunately, it's also my job to bring them back under control. And that is painful.

@georgeedison So, I was thinking, and I think perhaps a github/lp repository with the proforma comments might be best.
just a thought, since it's what I'm using personally right now as it is.
To be fair, jokerdino, you did say you hadn't seen Star Wars.
yeah but I didn't start it. Just no
ok I probably did.

Q: Why is Unity 2D being discontinued?

flutefluteAs reported by Phoronix, the news from UDS appears to be that development on Unity 2D will stop, with the focus being on a single, unified implementation. Obviously maintaining two codebases to do the same thing is not ideal. However, Unity 2D was created for a reason ("Unity 2D's goal is to pro...
