@GeorgeEdison Your here!
Can I haz chat bubbles in pidgin?

No idea, I'm afraid.
I don't use Pidgin.

Finally, finally... a glimmer of hope - I was able to cross-compile a "Hello World" GTK application and run it without crashing.
Now to figure out why my Gimp plugin isn't working (this really is a lot harder than it sounds).

Q: Give user permissions to all files and folders

Thomas ClaysonI want to have a user who has access to all the files and folders on the system. This is for the purpose of using RSYNC on a local machine to backup a remote machine. At the moment we are using the user backups and although we have added this user to the groups sudo and admin rsync still returns...

Hi Sleeping beauties!

11:35 AM
Hi
I have a weirdo problem with hyper-v and ubuntu; any ideas whether askubuntu is the right place or if there's a more specific forum?

Why not try Server Fault?
Not many server folks roam Ask Ubuntu. really

All right, thanks.

jrg
12:28 PM
@lazyPower not bad.

12:38 PM
@AmithKK post a shot of what you mean by 'ubuntu theme for empathy' icons worked in the pastebin i tagged you next to. what are you wanting to change?
I need to see what it is you want to change

you haven't seen empathy Ubuntu theme?

i just don't get what he's trying to change

he wants the same theme for pidgin I think
or this is an entirely new question

same

12:41 PM
yes that one
notifier bubbles from OSD already look the same if you use unity. i know icons work with the tweaked adium2empathy
what specific visual element is he trying to change

i think he wants the same skin but i'll let him clarify on that

example. is he trying to change this:
It's one of those things where someone says "I want this", but they're not adequately expressing what they want for me to help them

12:57 PM
okay, that i can look at

> 10:04:03 <lazyPower> we have a wicked game of idlerpg goin on in here
LOL. XD

1:22 PM
@jokerdino that's not how pidgin is built. you can set your own message background and let others do the same, but fancy bubbles just isn't going to happen afaict

1:34 PM
hi all!

hi

morning

anyone read computer stupidities?

nope

then i recommend you read it in free time.
caution: I'm not responsible if you die of laughter. :P

1:40 PM
it does seem funny giving it a quick once over

hmm... depends how you take it. some of them made me laugh really hard.
This ones not bad..
This little bit of Java was written as part of a group project at university. The friend who passed it to me has been bouncing off the walls about the quality of the guilty party's code (silly things like defining error and success codes with the same value so you don't know what the return code means and stuff like that), but this is the most obviously stupid bit.

public int convertItoi(Integer v)
{
    if (v.intValue()==1) return 1;
    if (v.intValue()==2) return 2;
    if (v.intValue()==3) return 3;
where can i get some detailed info on date-time applet?

@Mahesh what info?

rlemon.github.com/lememe anyone got any feedback for me on this?

Are abstract locations supported?

1:52 PM

as far as i can see, UTC is ok but not anything else.

@rlemon too small to read. make the text bolder and bigger?

@jokerdino next is a font selection menu, atm only bold arial. border and size are controlled by the slider.
border is 1/20th the size rounded up.

oops didn't see that slider. good stuff

jrg
Ok, I wonder how PO'ed dad would be with my having a machine inside the DMZ all the time. :S
Meh. I'll just play it safe.

@rlemon aw, so awesome!

jrg
mwahaha.
I'd just move everything into the DMZ, it's where I've got gigabit. :P

is there an IRC channel for the support of date-time indicator? I find a lot of features missing.
btw what package is it linked with, and that begs another question..
do we have a way of knowing which package is responsible for a display element or a window or a particular behaviour?
a dirty way would be to use apport, since i can 'try' filing a bug by clicking on a window, and a bug report is generated on the package that created it....

indicator-datetime

@jokerdino Thanks, and regarding my general question, any guesses?

2:10 PM
which specific question?

I have a window. and i want to know the specific package that created it

hmm do you have anything in mind that you want to know about?

btw thanks @aking1012 I've read a bit about MTU and your suggestion makes perfect sense. Yet to reconnect to my hostel and test, though.
@jokerdino No. I want a perfectly generic answer, if there is one.
good UGT morning @Prasad

i can't think of any solution that would work. sorry about that

haaaaai, gooood ugt morning

2:18 PM
@jokerdino np. btw if it interests you, I have a dirty solution.

@Mahesh np

to try reporting a bug against the 'unknown package' and apport magically finds the package for u.

ubuntu-bug -w that is
that is the only use case. so good to see we have that feature. :)

@aking1012 And when i earlier said i couldn't understand a word of what u said, i did not realise that i was not willing to learn. When i found it, things made perfect sense.. :) Thanks for teaching me this important lesson.
@jokerdino yup..
:)

is there anyone who uses KDE here?

2:31 PM
not me

nope

there is a question in the QA zone! he may be out of luck :-)

@Prasad might want to ask on the site, we have a small but vibrant group of KDE users

he doesn't seem to have a question actually

2:35 PM
@Mahesh I think I'm encountering that ethernet timeout thing

O.o... shall we file a bug?

darn, where is the USC banner hosted?

If only my proxy server allowed it, the teams would've had plenty of bug reports to handle with. I'm sure most, if not all, are bugs that went un-noticed.

jrg
not yet
i need to figure out if its related to my cable or not

@jokerdino USC banner??? Which one?

jrg
2:39 PM
since i'm splicing new ones right now. :P

the exhibit banner. If I can find the link, I can make my answer a little more awesome :P
how do i track to and fro traffic at least?

@jrg Do that, then try aking's suggestionof lowering MTU size and see if that helps, and if things fail, we should really consider filing a bug.
@jokerdino I didn't get u. Are you referring to the recommended apps banner in software center?
I doubt it, since you've said 'hosted' and 'traffic'

yeah the banner in USC.
the banner is hosted elsewhere. i am trying the find the link
i am probably not using the right terms here

bye guys, need to go, dinner is waiting, see ya

that thing yeah
it is not image but a banner

ok, ok. why dont you take a screenshot and use it?
you want the rolling thingy?

ok never mind that.
i am writing crap chat messages today arrgh

What network traffic are you interested in?
lol I've read that

Hello all

2:49 PM
i want to know what stuff is phoning home and stuff like that

hello @AmithKK

Heya @Mahesh

hmm... Never tried it, but heard wireshark is good.
@AmithKK How r u?

@Mahesh I'm fine
@jokerdino ?

2:51 PM
it's trying to download from somewhere. i need the link

@jokerdino Is that a script running? btw wireshark should do the job, if thats what u want.

@rlemon YU NO USE IMPACT?

Its probably a simple get request on a page or script

i never got wireshark working

u've to sudo it.
ok, gksudo
I've tried it, just now, and wireshark shows me all traffic

2:55 PM
that was a good question @coversnail

@jokerdino Now I'm ready to help you. Do you have wireshark installed?

not this bug one but the software-center banner thingie
something lighter?

hmm... no idea.. lemme google it and see if i can get something

never mind, i am installing it again

installing what?

jrg
2:58 PM
wireshark is amazing btw

@Mahesh wireshark

@jrg Agrees
Its awesome
I'm currently running it btw

how does it work?
it just froze.

@jokerdino Attaching to a socket
monitoring packets

@jokerdino It does, at times. run it with gksudo. easiest way to get it running. also lil dirty.
and select the interface. eth0 if lan, wlan0 if wifi
and then repeat the action that caused that unable to fetch/resolve/whatever
stop capture, save it to a file, and now start applying filters to dig out what you want.

3:06 PM
i am being dumb today. boo
and that person has accepted my answer anyway. not much to make my answer any more awesome

and if it freezes for lil long, restart it. If you've got the tim and patience and such stuff, add yourself to group 'wireshark'
@jokerdino May i have a look at it?

Q: Have applications which appear in the featured banner in the Software Centre paid to be advertised there?

@jokerdino +50 for you :P

@AmithKK what happened??

@jokerdino You got 5 upvotes

3:13 PM
nice. three new upvotes

@jokerdino Thanks, was wondering because I'd never seen any mention of potential advertising in the app developers part of the Ubuntu website. Seems like a potentially big revenue stream that's being missed out on, though I guess it might annoy people to see advertising too

yeah your question just made me wonder about that.
but historically, Ubuntu was never about profit making.

jrg
sweet, i finished my cables.

nice

Q: Ubuntu 12.04 Menu Bar overlap

myusuf3I have dual monitors for my development machine. I usually have my terminal open fullscreen in my secondary screen as my IDE(vim) and when I click on my primary screen I get this super ugly menu overlap on my terminal even though its in full screen. The terminal program I use have no menu bar...

ideas?

jrg
Thank you @aking1012
you're looking for transparency @myusuf3

@myusuf3 I use myunity to set my topbar to transparent. if you did that and ran it as set to size of screen, but not maximized it would work out fine. alternately, if you want to abuse a bug, then just maximize a window on another screen that has its corner on that monitor. the bug will cause that topbar to go transparent.

Great answer: How can I check if my CPU is AMD64 compatible? http://askubuntu.com/questions/133111/how-can-i-check-if-my-cpu-is-amd64-compatible/133123?atw=1#133123 #64bit

@myusuf3 Actually, try F11 in your terminal.
f11 and then turn on transparency. will look like this

hi all

jrg

hi @htorque
@jrg sweet, i'm not the only one that uses htop

jrg
(or something like that.
@aking1012 Oh, I've been hooked in htop. it's an amazing tool.

prefer it over top :P

jrg
amazing tool
should be default. :P

5:43 PM
i wish it was, but it would require ncurses. top doesn't iirc

jrg
true

@aking1012 I don't know why more don't use it ;)
its very useful

I've been flamed for recommending it...on AU in fact

yay

5:46 PM
o.O

lol

jrg
if we're honest, there is almost no reason not to use htop

did they say why they don't like it?

jrg
@aking1012 where?!

digging it up just a sec
askubuntu.com/questions/122984/… it's in the comments. i think it was just complaining about docs...not really looking for an answer

jrg
5:49 PM
htop seems pretty self-explanatory to me. shrug

i know right?
i put in the why in an edit to clean up the comments

htop is also one more character to type (at least by default)!!!

alias bte to htop and you fix that(bte representing best_tool_ever)

jrg
the only issue i have with htop is that its keyboard shortcuts interfere with my tmux config.

you can click on the areas if you want
F10 interfered with something for me, but i found that ncurses supports clickables

jrg
5:53 PM
wait, you can click it?

yessir...that's in that answer too :)

i now feel really dumb. yay me. ;)

@jrg make sure you tell your teacher that you appreciate him/her today...

jrg
@TheX Mom knows she's appreciated. Although i do have some emails to send to my ubuntu-using friends who taught me a lot.
Or i'll just go on an upvoting spree. Think that will work? ;)

@jrg only if you don't forget to upvote me ;)

jrg
6:10 PM
You only taught me that you don't like unity. Not worth thanking you for. ;)

oh.... :-(

>.>

surely I have taught you something??

@jrg - i'm working on setting up an app to do the pledgie campaign per year + each project gets its own campaign with possible target dollar amounts. we'll see if i finish it. i think it would explain a lot about why more devs don't do open source.

jrg
It might explain a lot.
but at the same time, I see a ton of devs doing open source
but i don't see any designers

6:13 PM
or i could start eating words...either way. just saying.
brief aside: 7 starred comment. i think that's a new record for me
BBL - mw3 is calling my name, and i have some slack in my stock apps project plan atm
if anyone has time, i'm puzzled as to why i haven't gotten any responses on this one unless it was just complaining: askubuntu.com/questions/124684/…

Q: How can I force unzip / zip not to create a subdirectory when I extract it?

cwdDepending on how a zip file is created, sometimes it will extract all of the files directly, and sometimes it will extract the files into a subdirectory. If the latter is true, how can I force the unzip command to "ignore" that first level directory? Example: cd /tmp wget http://omeka.org/file...

jrg
@Mahesh That was me.
so it was hardware related

must be.
but why does just one pair not work?
PS: Other combos I tested didn't include other linux pcs.

no idea. spill water on anything lately?

nope..

hi @ChanHoSuh! just noticed ur presence
and ok, jorge's back, anyway his watever prog ignore all unimportant pings, so i decided not to ping him unless important.
why trouble that poor chap?
:P

why not? :P

lol, its just that i dont want to be pinged for every silly thing, and i should let him live in peace just the way i do.
he has enough headaches.. :) yeah, lil leg pulling helps, perhaps, to add lil fun, but it may be frustrating at times, and i doubt if poor jorge has a anger/yelling program installed.
even if it is installed, he rarely runs it.
Whats this? I seem to have developed both love and sympathy towards that poor jorge
