Well, it did not work yet. I don't know what I'm missing.
If I run ls -l /sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo/switch I get no permission (translated)
jrg
jrg
tack sudo on the front of it and try again
ls: cannot access /sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo/switch: No such file or directory
?
That's what I'm wondering as well...
no permission when using ls ???
Using sudo does not help.
`matthias@SU:~$ ls -l /sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo/switch
ls: Zugriff auf /sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo/switch nicht möglich: Keine Berechtigung`
matthias@SU:~$ sudo !!
sudo ls -l /sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo/switch
ls: Zugriff auf /sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo/switch nicht möglich: Datei oder Verzeichnis nicht gefunden
@jrg it doesn't exist because it's not installed. i can confirm that it doesn't say no such file or directory on the end, but it's the case for me
jrg
jrg
except there is no vgaswitcheroo package
19:05
@jrg Why am I missing this?

Q: How to merge and pipe results from two different commands to single command?

David OneillI want merge (union) output from two different commands, and pipe them to a single command. A silly example: Commands I want to merge the output: cat wordlist.txt ls ~/folder/* into: wc -l In this example, if wordlist.txt contains 5 lines and 3 files, I want wc -l to return 8. $cat wordl...

anyone?
jrg
jrg
@gentmatt I don't know, i don't have it either
@DavidOneill mkfifo is what you want. i'll get around to an answer
nm. pablome's answer is great if it works
@aking1012 for my learning how does mkfifo work? the man page didn't have any examples...
19:20
stdin and stdout are just special files for a process. mkfifo makes a special file like this with an arbitrarily name. you can use it for commands that don't support reading from stdin.

it would be something like:
mkfifo apipe
crunch params > apipe && hydra -P apipe
if you want to wait until crunch is done, or
crunch params > apipe & hydra -P apipe
if you want to start processing right away. if you start processing right away, you need a way to make one consume as fast as the other outputs, or gracefully handling bad reads
@aking1012 man... people should like give us a warning when changing gravatars and/or names.
I was hoping for a 'Great Scott, he finally got an avatar!' but nobody did it yet
great scott, finally got an avatar!
now, back to future!
jrg
jrg
@rlemon Not bad. - i.imgur.com/8xKSC.png
text needs padding.
there is a lot more yet to be done.
i'm just like... sweet... i made a meme generator.
19:26
@DavidOneill did that give you a basic explanation or you were looking for more?
@aking1012 I think i understand - i'll play around with it when i've got some down time
thanks!
19:39
is there a way to track number of clones on github? it's the only thing I see on google code that I don't see on github. I could just be overlooking it
jrg
jrg
Oh, clones
yeah. like googlecode has "Downloads" github doesn't have "clones"
I want to set up pledgie campaigns for all the projects I have sort of working and prioritise bug-fixes based on a combination of userbase, donations, and donation to userbase ratio. I don't see a way I can do that at the moment.
@aking1012 , aw I kind-of liked that green spiral thing you had going on.
19:55
was just the default randomly selected thing. i flipped the stock png of great scott, so i'm more looking towards my own answers
@aking1012 /me loved that default green one
well i can't go back to it. i could change it again, but then what to change it to? i thought about a black background with white text that reads 'this is not a gravatar'
404 error not found
@aking1012 or that broken pic icon
I give up...
@Matthew a white square could also be funny.
@gentmatt when you get to that point, you're usually about 5 minutes from solving it. walk away and come back. something might click. i can't troubleshoot it b/c i don't have a hybrid graphics laptop
20:00
there would be just a blank spot when your in a chat @aking1012
my name would be there, but i take your point
maybe just an arrow, but i can't decide which direction is should point. up for posts, left for posts and pointing at my name, or right for chat and profile data(but it would make no sense on posts)
??
HAL 3000
or is it 9000
jrg
jrg
9000.
hey anyone has probs connectiong to ethernet?? :P
I would'nt do that if I were you Dave....
20:07
@Mahesh not recently. usually if that isn't working it's a poorly written firmware with MTU problems.
my laptop is happy with an avg 50kbps wifi, but refuses to connect to a 10 Mbps LAN
The device kept switching states, start, stop, srart, stop, so on..
i was watching the syslog.
ok, tailing it
and thats really frustrating. How can i diagnoseit?
sounds like the ethernet is broke, I had an IBM laptop that did that once.
jrg
jrg
wow, you've come so far since you first showed up here, now you're tailing log files and watching syslog
anyway, what does syslog show?
@jrg was that sarcasm?
jrg
jrg
@Mahesh no
20:11
wait, i need to find it. I've not connected to ethernet in days, coz it just doesn't work.
and ya, super+w opens ONLY the windows on current workspace..
I've tried meddling with ccsm. no use.
found a setting somewhere that asked if all windows should be opened.. and i set it properly, no use still..
and some parts of compiz dont work at times..
all in all i've got a broken system here, and i dont know why i'm still happy using it
@jrg ok. sorry.. was thinking of something else.
@Mahesh yeah, i was mistaken on that one b/c i confused workspaces with screen area. three screens had it looking like it worked just fine for me. anyway...
any ideas how i can traverse a huge syslogs?? gedit is surely not an option. nano and vim probably work, or may be even just using less.
jrg
jrg
gedit works
just be prepared for a slowdown until it loads
or you could use the logfile viewer
and btw, did i say i love less? I was reading pdfs on tty1 using less when my friends freaked out!! :P (I have a preprocessor that's probably default.)
^--this
jrg
jrg
20:18
^ this
@jrg you must be joking. gedit is tooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo slow to respond in like an year if i give it a file over few megs size.
I managed to bork gedit with a really long line once...and I do mean REALLY long
whats that this??? were u pointing to my comment on less?
jrg
jrg
@Mahesh Oh, works fine for me
but use the built in GUI logfile viewer
20:20
and what am i to understand from just a single this? the psychic communication channel is probably experiencing problems.. i couldn't comprehend.... :|
@jrg after reading TLCL and bash manual and such stuff, i began loving CLI to the extent i used 'console' as one of my kernel boot options. Until i had to view few jpegs. (My friend mailed me exam notes.)
jrg
jrg
You can do that from the command line
GUI log viewer's good, btw
@jrg O.o... how?? without starting xserver.
i mean, i can alwys issue startx; but i dont want to be using the same thing over and over, everytime i start, coz a lot of my preparation depended on that.
jrg
jrg
i think you can use feh
that afaik depends on having X running. it runs from cli, but it needs X to render the image. xinerama-lib is in its dependency list anyway
jrg
jrg
oh, yes
20:28
here's a part of my syslog.
btw at what frequency is syslog moved to syslog.1 and the gzipped archives?
any wild guesses on my ethernet prob?

jrg
jrg
none here
there was a question about bittorrent crashing a router here on AU that had to do with flooding the number of connections, but i am assuming if you're talking about a general ethernet link issue... already told you where i lay the attribution. it may not be the case in your case, but i have seen firmware not work with other than maximum MTU size. i have also seen different firmware not expect this requirement and fail in differing places
20:44
@aking1012 Sorry buddy, not a single word made it into my thickhead.. :|
jrg
jrg
oh, the whole fat packet thing?
that or some firmware that supports vpn, doesn't expect to need to be able to shrink packets below normal size. i had a hotbrick that kept crashing a cable-modem that way once.
yes....
@aking1012 btw i've checked connection preferences. some field labelled MTU is set to automatic. you suggest i experiment with it?
i would manually set it lower just in case. if it doesn't work, then it might not be the case in your case. i just don't rule it out
Will experiment tomorrow. I'm nearly a km away from my hostel, and LAN's down at nights..
20:58
shrink packets should have been shrink frames, but you got the point
yep, sort of.
(reading all chat i missed from the transcripts)
jrg
jrg
@aking1012 since you're the securityish guy, what does this popping up in your network say to you?
no idea what it is, it's not mine. Might be dads, but unlikely.
btw did i say something abt super+W??
it was previously mentioned here, by jokerdino, and it seems thats a bug, reported.
yes, you did
jrg
jrg
21:06
@Mahesh yeah, that bug is not fun.
I had to use all fancy workarounds.
@jrg 37 is supposed to be NTP, but your dad shouldn't be running an NTP server. Also according to RFC it shouldn't in any way resemble http. Do submit it to Fyodor. They might have an idea that I don't. What's running on that host on that port?
jrg
jrg
@aking1012 nevermind, it's one of dads. freebsd server.
btw i now have ring switcher, shift switcher and application switcher all enabled, bound to different keyboard shortcuts and screen corners. had to experiment with the internal values to make things more eye-candy though..
jrg
jrg
no wonder I didn't know what it was. I don't normally sniff freebsd boxes.
21:10
and all that coz i was determined to hunt down that bug's caue.
thought that was some bad config.
jrg
jrg
i feel stupid now.
wait why?
like 2 people i know target BSD if it's not an on port 80 webserver
jrg
jrg
because here I am walking around the house looking at all the ethernet cables, and then at the (apparently incomplete) house network spreadsheet i've assembled, and then I send dad a text saying "is this yours" and he says "yup".
could be a VM, which would explain why a hardware inventory didn't catch the MAC/IP
jrg
jrg
Yeah, it is a VM.
21:16
my mother is running in to something similar at a local community college. they won't let her have MAC mappings for VMs, but they want a network operating system course taught on deep-freeze computers with a barracuda content filtering system. barracuda flags on every non-provisioned MAC, so they have a kitten fit frequently
jrg
jrg
lol
that's sad.
time to rewrite my network inventory spreadsheet, since that had me really worried for a few minutes
you could have just tapped the uplink and dumped all connections to that host on that port...but i digress
(there's a reason the router and modem are no more than 2 feet from my computer)
jrg
jrg
a little hard to do that on a network of the size that our house is...
you must have cooler stuff than i do :)
jrg
jrg
we just have 5 people with multiple devices each. ;)
21:27
brief aside. i can't wait for @AmithKK to get back so he'll test my patches to adium2pidgin-theme-convert and see if they work for what he wants. i only tested emoticons, but i squashed the bug that kept icons from working
which room. i think there should be speaker names or descriptions in there somewhere. nm i saw the second line
i hear marco
i do too. why is it mastered as stereo without duping the channels?
he's not talking about ask ubuntu - how weird! :P
hm, one channel dead, yeah
this and that is a bit pointless without video coverage :D
i suppose. if he's got something coming where computer output should be on the right side...so i can logically separate it automagically...then it would make sense. anyway
21:55
bed time... did i mention that i dislike PDT? ;)
night all
sleep well
jrg
jrg
i'm trying to load it in VLC, but it isn't loading! :(
i had to try twice in totem, but the second time it worked
jrg
jrg
i hear static
ogg bug or icecast bug probably
too late...it's over now
jrg
jrg
21:59
totem is working. i think.
oh...
that'd be why
i get crickets now not static, but either way
22:53
I have 45 .deb files, how do I install them all at once one by one?
jrg
jrg
sudo dpkg -i $path-to-debs/*.deb
but that can be dangerous
if you have messed up dependencies
its early morning, and i need some sleep b4 i can attack tomorrows exam.
sorry. todays
jrg
jrg
@Mahesh night!
one of the reasons i dislike AU is coz its addictive.. tooooooooooo addictive
well, and thats pretty much the only reason i have.. :)
good night @jrg
@jrg - any thoughts on my pledgie ranking of projects thing?
jrg
jrg
23:08
I like the idea.
hi @RolandTaylor
@jrg seems like it should already exist...it doesn't seem to
jrg
jrg
Hm.
@RolandTaylor howdy
i'm about to leave, but check your email and take a look around
hi @aking1012 and @jrg
