whyz jorge castro's post sticky??? The starred one on the right?

jrg
because I made it sticky?
Ugh, I need some good music to go through and destroy those. This is a mess.

kk. when's 12.04.1 scheduled for?

@Mahesh When all the upgrade bugs are resolved ;)

and when's that gonna be? rough estimates welcome..
who hates windows here???

@Mahesh Not me!

2:08 PM

jrg
I don't hate windows, I just strongly dislike it for a number of reasons.

I mean, yesterday i had a discussion with my friend, and the topic was my passion for ubuntu.
He has a claim. That we are not united by the love towards foss, but because we hate windows...
And few people i met since then shared the same opinion.
and that really worries me. :(

@Mahesh No. That could be a unifying force for passion towards open source based systems in some cases, but it's the wrong reason to do the right thing. Also, check the screenshot.

@aking1012 yup, i checked it jus now. thanks.. :)

@Mahesh I think we all have that common interest but I like Ubuntu and what it provides as an other option when you don't care for Windows or MacOS

2:12 PM
I love it coz i have the freedom to understand how it works, and to try and make it work the way i want it to work

agreed

@Mahesh Don't ge upset, atleast we are here! isn't that enough?

Q: What are common canonical questions for our site?

Jacob Johan EdwardsSo according to the Gospel of Spolsky 13:4, a core mission of Stack Exchange communities is to stop re-answering the same questions, and instead build a library of canonical answers. When general duplicates (instances of a problem) arise, we close and refer them to one such answer. For example: ...

what worries me, is his opinion, something i found common... (and yes, i made the same mistake of looking at a very small, biased sample.. )
:)

@jrg Could you leave a stub CW answer on that question? I'd like to accept it and use it as a stickied compilation of valid answers
Like the Pro Forma thread

jrg
2:14 PM
Gotcha

@Mahesh can I say something?

yes.. go ahead..

@Mahesh have you ever used a pirated version of windows (as I did with windows 7 ultimate-OEM)

(jus to not let it remain permanent here, in the logs.)

:4501188 haha. OK then what about your friend? he is a pirate too ha!

2:19 PM
Why post a comment about a duplicate question? http://meta.askubuntu.com/questions/3039/why-post-a-comment-about-a-duplicate-question?atw=1

@Prasad He probably was, but our institute provides a licenced copy to all students. and he uses it.

@Mahesh If you're talking about licensed copies of Windows from MSDNAA, I have those too. To my mind, they are for specific use cases.

@Mahesh Ooooh! then no story from here...... you got the originals!

@aking1012 agreed. :)

jrg
I keep both my windows licences around, just in case.
it's one of those "I'm going to need it someday"
although I wish I had a XP, windows 7 isn't used by everyone. :S

2:29 PM
@jrg I got a win XP gift CD (if it is not here, I will be the pirate KING)

jrg
oh? That'd be cool.
But the main problem i have is that if I don't get a machine with XP installed, I have to get the IE testing VMs.
and those are not cool

@jrg Do you think it's cool, hounds of the microsoft are everywhere :-)

@jrg Do you need an XP MSDNAA license? They do exist.

@jrg Need a one ?

jrg
@aking1012 Not really, thanks though.
I'm talking to a guy who has an old desktop with XP, i think i'll buy that off him for $50 or so, and then i can have a legal, nicely infected XP to play with and then implode with a ubuntu server install
7:34 UDS time! Only a few more hours until the keynote.

2:34 PM
@jrg lol , it wasn't old..., but now it is, no windows 7 :-( , i like the infected part :-p

Heh. Yeah. I got a gianormous amount of software through the MSDNAA when I was doing the college thing. Just the software would have cancelled out tuition.

@jrg heh that hurts :-( it's not OLD, but kind of :-) my sis has a acer aspire one with original wn 7 but she didn't notice that her 1GB ram was removed and running with 512MB .....lol ...

jrg
Heh
Oh dear, it's doing the thunderstorm thing, and i keep hearing sirens. :(

and @jrg do you know how to fix the choppy sound of ubuntu when clicking buttons and playing music ? I have fixed it before , but do not remember now:-(

jrg
Yes.
pulseaudio --kill && pulseaudio --start in a terminal
thank you surge protectors!

2:43 PM
noop, not working,

morning

jrg
@Prasad restart and try again perhaps?
I solved this last week by restarting pulseaudio

@jrg 30 seconds please

jrg
Oh sweet, hangouts on air is now enabled for everyone!

OK, let me send you a kiss :-)
it is not mine, but you can have it, thanks worked like a charm!!!
@aking1012 you also can have it! you are my Unity hero!

2:54 PM
@Prasad Lipstick?

Hahha, that's a kiss sent by me to @jrg because he fixed my sound problem :-)

jrg
yay!

wow, what is this dock?
Cairo dock?

yes

Nice!!!! with conky? what icon themes do you guys use , I use awoken and faenza
user image

lol

3:10 PM
@Prasad lol, love the pic...

OK guys, I need to go now, 8.39PM here! goooood night bye (bye @aking1012, :-))

later @Prasad

Do we have a canonical question for "unmet dependencies" question? I can't seem to find it.

then create one.. :)

I am just bringing it up for the sake of it. :-p

3:10 PM
wait, only after confirming it.
i'ven't searched it.
Trying to track down UDS schedules, and to see what i can attend, remotely

I hope to be there next year

jrg
puppet removes all the fun of managing my computers.

btw, is there a way to use a custom format for displaying time in the indicator?

jrg
yeah

@jrg when you've got it set up the way you want it, it'll add magic though

jrg
3:17 PM
@aking1012 oh, it is amazing right now.
Watching as I make a change on my master server and then the changes ripple out about a minute later on my other VMs is amazing

absolutely

jrg
I mean, i had a rocky start with it last night, but when i woke up this morning and everything Just Worked (tm), i was sold.
@AmithKK btw, i'm shutting down endeavor long enough for me to expand the disk inside VirtualBox and resize it

@jrg Wait.. you can do that now?

jrg
@AmithKK yeah
it's complicated, but possible
@Mahesh there is a way, i'm digging up the answer

@Mahesh yeah

3:21 PM
I've got a suggestion. to try meddling with the language settings.

how do you want it to be?

date,month,day time(24hr)
i.e, dd Month day HH:MM:SS

Would May 7 21:00:00 do?
Ok let me find a way to rearrange it

no.
simply enabling all components gives me something like Mon May 7 20:55:57

So you want May 7 Mon HH:MM:SS instead or what?

3:26 PM
and I get confused when the date and hrs part are together.
@aking1012 yeah, something like that.

07 may wed HHMMSS

jrg
dconf editor

@jrg Do we have a format string in there?

i might have found it

3:29 PM
ok yeah found it

jrg
and then Com > canonical > indicator > datetime > custom-time-format > %d %b %T

@AmithKK now where was that hidden?

Thats in XFCE

@jokerdino and i presume you found an alternate answer

same as jrg.

3:30 PM
@AmithKK I use unity.. :| and btw XFCE didn't really please me. Can you share a screenshot of ur desktop? I guess I've done something wrong in setting XFCE up.

jrg
ask on the site, i want some rep for that. ;P
oh, no it's a duplicate

Q: Clock-Indicator format

WojciechRecently I upgraded to Ubuntu 11.04. The clock indicator on the panel is not following my regional settings format. I edited locales and in all applications I have the right format of date and time except clock indicator on the panel. Tried dconfig editor but keys for clock applet cannot be chang...

Good stuff, I have gotten some rep for the day. No nada then

@jrg good show

jrg

lolz
%a %b %d %T was what i wanted.

Q: Have Samba "proxy" for another server?

TheLQThis might be a weird question, but can you have Samba "proxy" for another server? IE if mount a share on \\server1\someshare the server transparently proxies it to \\otherserver\randomshare. Note that redirection will not work since \\otherserver is not directly accessible. The servers run Ubu...

@Mahesh does '\n' still add a newline?
hm, nope
%n does :D

woo awesome feature - 9to5mac.com/2012/05/07/…

ouch, that sucks

@UbuntuQuestionsonUL It's called SMBRelay, but it's used most often for other purposes

@jokerdino wait, it's fixed already, no?
;-)

3:52 PM
don't know for sure
doesn't sound like it is

@htorque ?? I didn't get u..

@Mahesh you can have two liners in indicator-datetime

@Mahesh you can add '%n' to '%a %b %d %T' to cause a line break

btw any way i can backup the entire settings i edit using dconf? must be a plaintext file hidden somewhere

which is pretty useless :P

3:55 PM
@Mahesh .conf/dconf i think

it's a binary file
~/.config/dconf/user

wow nice
i can distribute my configurations then

don't forget, that a lot of programs still use gconf
so make sure to back up ~/.gconf as well

i am about to sleep.

3:56 PM

hmm.. i'm not a genius here. can anyone explain a little?
whats gconf and dconf and the difference?

what?

they handle configuration settings, that i guessed..

http://askubuntu.com/questions/34490/what-are-the-differences-between-gconf-and-dconf
http://askubuntu.com/questions/91403/when-to-use-gconf-vs-dconf

@jokerdino u are my google.. :D thanks

3:58 PM
i have been on ask ubuntu long enough to roughly tell if a question is dupe or not
and well, good night for now

jrg
night @jokerdino, and you're a ninja

@AmithKK reposts the same screenshot again

@aking1012 Yeah
I'm lazy
He asked for my desktop

you said something about using xfce. have you played with using openbox as a compiz adapter for it? it seems to work for some people

Good night @jokerdino :) and thanks @AmithKK

4:02 PM
@aking1012 You dont need it
You can use vanilla compiz

@aking1012 Beat me to death if i understood a single word of it.

@AmithKK just works out of the box now...that's better. iirc it didn't used to

jrg
is the video feed being laggy for anyone else?

someone educate me abt openbox, and using compiz as adapter, what it means.. and stuff like that

i'm not getting any chop. smooth for me

jrg
4:10 PM
must be my connection.

@Mahesh wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Compiz#XFCE there used to be some issues with launching it directly iirc, but some people supposedly used openbox as an intermediate layer to work around the problem youtube.com/watch?v=n7qkupiL7RA

jrg
So i'm a super smart canary.
Mark can't stand still can he?

I thought that was a cute statement. I also liked 'rolling release crack madness'

jrg
I liked that as well.

Hello everybody, nice to see you here

jrg
4:24 PM
Small cloud in the garage, which serves as backup heating.

:D

yeah. GPU computing rig works for that too
@GeppettvsDConstanzo hi

what's the topic now?
hello aking1012

jrg
We're just chatting about the UDS keynote

oh good... well, I am not informed about
but I have been wondering what is happening to this new 12.04 release?
and came to see if people is having an opinion

jrg
12.04 was released about a week ago, i like it.

4:28 PM
Yeah, but I have seen lots of new people (with 1 point rep) coming with issues and their problems seems to be different this time
I mean, maybe these people were there before, but they are coming to ask now... the question is "why"?

I think almost all of it is requiring 3D - and the final bit of shifting to gnome3 since 10.04 is getting old

@AmithKK just a heads up but I have an answer for your post about empathy themes going to pidgin but please let me know if it doesn't make sense or if you need me to update it with better information.

@ruffEdgz yay

@AmithKK just posted

@AmithKK I figured it wouldn't work... it was just an option since its on Pidgin's plugin page
I read their Google code page and someone said it didn't work on 11.10
probably shouldn't offer that as an solution since it hasn't been worked on since 2010

jrg
what is the surprise?
192 core server
....
wow

@AmithKK you just can't run it without parameters. run it with --help and see what happens

@AmithKK removed that part about the conversion plugin for Pidgin since it just won't work on new versions of Ubuntu.

Good Night

hey whyz jorge missing a diamond??

He never had one

5:09 PM
That error traces back to a plist problem not an adium converter problem

@aking1012 Solution?
Anyways
I dont think I can get the chat buibbles

5:29 PM
Can somebody please help me with this problem?
I'm new to GIMP and have just installed GIMP 2.8.
The first time I opened GIMP, I closed some of the tools windows and now I want them back, but how?
Also, how can I enable this single-window mode which GIMP 2.8 is supposed to have?

@gentmatt Windows>Recently Closed Docks

@AmithKK Thanks! That's it.

@gentmatt Windows>Single-Window Mode

Cross-compiling Gimp plugins - ten times easier than it used to be.

5:39 PM
@GeorgeEdison awesome

Over yonder on the GTK site, they have an all-in-one package with all of the dev. files for everything but the Gimp itself.
...and you can get those by generating them with Mingw's dlltool.
Unfortunately it seems like I found a bug in my plugin that only manifests itself on Windows (actually, I haven't tried the plugin on 64-bit Ubuntu so it could be an architectural problem).

Bounty offered: SQLite stopped working after upgrade http://askubuntu.com/questions/130712/sqlite-stopped-working-after-upgrade?atw=1 #php

At UDS?

yeah

jrg
5:45 PM
@MarcoCeppi enjoying UDS? Apparently you and OMG! got a mention.

@jrg briefly yes :)

jrg
(i was elsewhere for the last half of the keynote. :)
congrats!

I'll actually be doing a plenary in a few hours: summit.ubuntu.com/uds-q/meeting/20535/juju-charm-store

@MarcoCeppi How many people are there? (roughly)

Oh, excellent.

5:47 PM
about 600-700+
haven't done a head count yet

@AmithKK - I just tested a small patch:
http://pastebin.com/dSZtdcKB
It works with this: http://www.adiumxtras.com/index.php?a=xtras&xtra_id=7764

hm, there was a command to update the user's groups (after adding him to a new one) - any help?
don't want to log out

i remember needing that, but i can't remember what it was. it was on an audio playback problem thread once

newgrp <group>
only for the current shell
in my case that's enough, though. :)
yay, back having usb support in vbox

Took me a while to log in here.
i was kicked out
looks around, with suspicion

6:02 PM
oO ? for...

and i badly want a reliable keylogger
@aking1012 kicked out in the sense i was auto-logged out and it just refuses to log me back in

and i badly want a samsung galaxy s2 flasher running under linux
baaa

jrg
@Mahesh yeah, I was going to say - I DIDNT DO ANYTHING! HONEST!

If I could get a dollar for every time I patched around a python library problem...

I keep losing all i write when these stupid things crash, btw crashes are more frequent now on my laptop. actually, never had them before

6:05 PM
aaaa, there's no such menu in ICS

jrg
Ugh. Why is setting up a puppet server and getting it to talk to another machine A. so poorly documented, and B. such a pain? It's 2012, we have stackoverflow, we have superuser, we have serverfault. This should not be such a issue!

@jrg I was thinking.. would jrg respond?? ;)

@htorque is that related to trying to ICS from a tethered device through vbox back out to linux?

no, i just want to root it using a windows tool. kies is a samsung tool for managing and doing firmware updates.
i've yet to meet a user that doesn't hate kies (even under windows on bare metal).
[ICS being the android version IceCream Sandwich, not internet connection sharing]

Okay, got it.

6:09 PM
it's actually completely offtopic in here. :P

Did you install the extension pack so you can get EHCI support from vbox? <--might have just wandered back on topic

yeah, all done. usb support works fine with other devices, it's just those phone tools.
and then there are those threads in forums with 500+ pages

err. I had an issue with an N wireless USB not passing through right if I didn't have both the extensions inside the VM and the extension pack on the ubuntu side

you'd think with android being linux-based, there would be linux tools to handle all the stuff.

vendors want to stand on the shoulders of linux, not really support it. just my opinion
8

6:12 PM
no baseless opinion ;)

jrg
hey, 3 other people in this room agree.
it must be true!
it was on the internet!

four people is the majority.

it should be against some law to flag something on a mailing list as important. it messes with gmail folder sorted browsing

@aking1012 gmails way of handling labels and the way it serves imap is truly beyond anyone's understanding

@htorque majority achieved :)
Hi all

6:21 PM
:D hi

Whenever I see an Andoid device it looks like a memeber of the family (Linux).
But then it behaves totally alien.
Like someone has stolen Linux and transformed it to sth. evil.

after the update i went all ??? - but that's mainly samsung screwing up :-(

We have an S - so there's no ICS :"( that is even worse.

is it?
i'm not sure ICS brough anything exciting to my phone.
maybe the data usage application

honestly - i don't know. It does what it's supposed to do. So there is no need for an upgrade, really.
Are user data preserved when upgrading?

6:27 PM
except for all those security holes in the old kernel that gingerbread uses :D
mine were, yes.

Good to know. Android is insecure by design.
They all want our money.

good distro missing
ubuntu phone...

sighs
That would be one opportunity for Canonical to make money. Selling uPhone for $ 29,- incl. VAT and shipping.

jrg
I want a Ubuntu Phone that doesn't require a data plan.

yay, ODIN seems to see the phone in vbox.

6:31 PM
I want an uPhone that looks exactly like my uDesktop and my uTablet!

now i just need to dig through 523 more pages to learn what i need to do

Better learn what not to do - saves more time.

:p

Like e.g. never use vbox for firmware or phone upgrades...

at least now i know it works in vbox (and samsung's tool is indeed crap).
HA!
no risk, no fun. i like adventures!

6:33 PM
I heard the other day here, that an iPhone changes the USB - ID or something in the middle of the upgrade process.

off for watching snooker, cya all!

jrg
yeah, thats right @Takkat

sounds like a great way to brick the phone

bye cya @htorque

well, it's just an iphone, so what? >:D

6:34 PM
^my thought as well ;P

I really need help with this problem. At the moment the battery life of my Macbook Pro with Ubuntu is unacceptable. :( I appreciate any help!

Q: How can I force Ubuntu to use integrated graphics only?

gentmattThe battery life when using Ubuntu on my Macbook Pro is very bad: 2-3 hours whereas OS X achieves 5-6 hours. This is due to discrete graphics being used all the time. The battery life is better when using the proprietary AMD driver, but still far worse than it could be when using integrated gra...

@gentmatt I can't think of anything other than a BIOS setting...

jrg
wait, bumblebee perhaps? or is that nvidia only?

This is on a Macbook Pro. How do I do this?
I have AMD graphics.

bumblebee or ironhide i thought.

6:41 PM
vgaswitcheroo
it worked for me

@Mahesh What Mac do you have?

not a mac.

Q: How to permanently switch off discrete graphic card?

user33831I got a integrated GD, which is Intel, and another discrete GD, AMD Radeon 6490 HD I am using ubuntu 11.10 1st, when I boot into Windows, my GD is indeed AMD Radeon 6490 HD, but when I boot into Ubuntu, it shows that I have AMD Radeon 6470 instead. 2nd, I try most methods only to install driver...

AMD graphics, and probs with battery life, and vgaswitcheroo did the job

jrg
that might do it

6:44 PM
I'll try vgaswitcheroo now. I've read before (earlier today) that bumblebee did not work on a Mac.

looks promising - and an accepted answer by Oli is worth more than anything.

@jrg Thanks!

@Takkat Oli said it, I believe it. Nuff said.

jrg
@gentmatt Don't thank me yet. Good luck!

vgaswicheroo did not help :(
Bumblebee will not help either, because I'm using AMD graphics...
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaargh!
What is this vgaswicheroo? I guess, I can't really use it.
I've been looking for help here: help.ubuntu.com/community/HybridGraphics
To check whether your kernel is compiled with the proper option you can examine the file config-2.6.nn-mm-generic in the /boot directory:
`grep -i switcheroo /boot/config-2.6.*`
If I run this command, I get:
(translated:) grep: /boot/config-2.6.*: File or directory not found.

jrg
6:58 PM
grep -i switcheroo /boot/config-3.2.*
that command is old, it isn't updated for the latest kernel

@jrg Doesn't work either.

jrg
sorry, i fat fingered that.
try the edited version please.

`/boot/config-3.2.0-23-generic:CONFIG_VGA_SWITCHEROO=y`
`/boot/config-3.2.0-24-generic:CONFIG_VGA_SWITCHEROO=y`

its supported then
