Increasingly we have problems accessing this because browsers require a https connection so I have therefor...

Are bash script declarations (#!/bin/bash) obligatory, if I run a script file from Bash (as with `bash myScript.sh)? Reducing them might cause problems at least in long run?

@cl-netbox happy birthday of tim mälzer to you!
@dessert Happy birthday ??? It is not my birthday today ... :) Good morning to you - I wish you a nice week ! :)
@cl-netbox maybe not for you, but for tim mälzer it is :)
@dessert ah okay ... then I misunderstood you (because you said : "to you". :) Are you a "fan" of Tim Mälzer ? :)
@cl-netbox I'm not so much into human-powered cooling. ;) No, I'm not really a fan, I just found out by chance that it is his birthday.
10:05
@dessert I guess some other people are having their birthdays today too ... ;P
@cl-netbox Who?
@dessert If you really want to know that, maybe DDG can be your friend ... ;P

Hey, i have a python script called setkl in ~/bin directory and i can run it with or without sudo. I added the line
`full path to setkl || exit 1`. After that line there is a line as follows:
`exit 0`. But it doesn't do its job. Any thoughts?
@AbdullahUYU What is its job? What are you expecting and what are you actually seeing?
It's actually so simple:

#! /usr/bin/env python
from subprocess import call
call(['setxkbmap', 'fr'])
@AbdullahUYU You say it "doesn't do its job". You need to explain what its job is, what you expect to see and what you actually see.
it sets the keyboard layout for french.
That said, why in the world would you use a python script for this? Especially if you're calling it from a shell script. Just use a shell script directly.
12:46
I dont know writing shell scripts, that's the reason.
@AbdullahUYU All you need is:
#!/bin/sh
setxkbmap fr
Well, i don't expect this to work, because the current one doesn't :) I don't see any difference.
@AbdullahUYU Both work fine for me, the python is just slower and needlessly complicated.
Does running setxkbmap fr in the terminal work?
Yep, I used to use it. and then I decided to automize it.
@AbdullahUYU If it works from the terminal, it will work as the shell script. It should also work in python, unless something's wrong with your python setup.
12:54
Well. it also work in python when I run it from terminal manually.
@AbdullahUYU Sigh. So you don't run it from the terminal? How were we supposed to know that?
Please post a question on the site and give all the relevant details.
No no. you've misunderstood me. I mean the script i wrote above is also working.

Hey all
Can I ask here question regards hardware ?
@V.7 Hi :) Why not ? What is your question ?
@AbdullahUYU Yes, but it doesn't work when you don't run it from the terminal. But you never explained you don't run it from the terminal. That's why it is better to post a question on the main site and explain exactly what you are doing.

Hi terdon :)

Mobo: X8DTN+-F, Cpu: E5620, RAM (serversupply.com/MEMORY/PC3-10600/2GB/SAMSUNG/… this is installed right now), BIOS shows i.imgur.com/328GJI2.jpg. So it works with ECC 1333MHz, but on 1060MHz, so all in all, would it work with 1600MHz on 1060MHz as with this 1333MHz which is ECC too. (1600: atea.lt/eshop/product/kingston-ddr3/?prodid=848344 this RAM is on view which should be installed ).
@terdon Allright. Thanks.
@V.7 Well, as far as I can see your MB supports (only) BUS SPEED: 1333MHZ ... so I think you can make use of RAM at 1333MHZ maximum. :)
Hi cl
V.7
V.7
@cl-netbox, So, it will work ? But only on 1060 ?
13:13
@V.7 I would select a 1333MHZ RAM device rather than a 1600MHZ one ... 1060MHZ should work though. :)
V.7
V.7
@cl-netbox, yup but we might have only 1600 right now
@V.7 Better choose a 1333MHZ RAM which is matching the capabilities of your mainboard. :)
V.7
V.7
@cl-netbox, you're right, but would 1600 work with 1333 mobo and 1066 CPU ?
@V.7 I'm not sure and hence can't guarantee that ... better ask the vendor - all I know is that all specs should match to be on the safe side. :)
V.7
V.7
Roger that, @cl-netbox, thank you very much

@V.7 You're welcome ! :)

I've already asked this question here: unix.stackexchange.com/questions/417337/…

@V.7 By the way, you can accept and/or upvote his answer ... :)
@V.7 You're welcome (x2) ! :)

What do you do with questions that OP posted claiming malware in the link? askubuntu.com/questions/998745/…
I made it code so at least the link isn't actually clickable. I don't really know what else, to be honest. Delete? Ignore?
@terdon Ah, good idea. =)
I don't know either, to tell you the truth of what to do with the link. No one in their right mind would want to click a link where someone claims it is malware.

@TheWanderer I remember this.. Except the default drivers for my soundcard weren't great so it always blared at 100% volume. Not pleasant if you weren't expecting it.
how the heck did I type ship and not this
idk that's your problem
I wanna install XP in a VM now
I used WinXP ten years long, doing a fresh install every year at least, and never heard that music until just now.
23:13
I know it was in the tour program
but apparently it also played during the installer
my computers just never had working sound drivers at that point
Yeah it played during the installer. @dessert maybe you didn't have sound drivers at that point?
neither did my apparently
@Seth must be it
@TheWanderer It's really not bad music.
especially for synth made in the late 90s
yeah
23:16
When I worked at CompUSA back in the day, customers used to ask me where they could get the soundtrack to the Windows XP install music. =)
@Terrance Did you sell it?
@Seth LOL I should have! Could have made sum bucks on that thing! =)
Was told too many times that it was Zen music..... Hmmmmmm, not quite when I was installing about 10 of these systems a week at the time in people's homes.
it's only 589MB!!!
eeee
XP doesn't support SATA natively lol
23:36
Well... I mean... 2001.
If XP was a child, it would be graduating from high school next year.
There's something to think about. My youngest son is the same age as XP. =)
@Terrance How nice! I have a Precise, a Utopic and a Zesty up and running! :)
well that's dumb
VMWare's official site has an outdated version of Player
You can get VMWare Player 14 at vmware.com/products/workstation-player/…
already got 14.1.1
23:48
Ah
I originally downloaded 14.0.0, which has a broken vmmon module
so I copied the entire vmmon source from the GH repo
and VMWare started
but then complained that the library version was too new
but now I'm up and running
honestly easier than expected
Hmmm, interesting. That was the only one that worked for vmmon for me. But then I killed my Xubuntu install because I had too many DEs on it and it was dying.
whee
I'd forgotten about this process
Windows 7's installer has spoiled me
hmmm sound isn't working
damn
Which sound card are you emulating?
it only shows my physical card
hehehehe
Windows XP has no online key checking
